The first time I used the TV to distract (使分散注意力)my daughter, I felt like a bad parent; I convinced myself I was a “bad” mom.. However, these days I believe the opposite to be true. Screen time makes me a better mom.
Now I know what most of you might be thinking: That’s ridiculous. Only crappy(糟糕的)parents rely on the screen to care for their kids. Then again, experts suggest parents limit media use. And while I do not doubt experts, there are things they fail to consider.
Like most 6-year-olds, my daughter gets worked up and excited easily and watching a cartoon gives her a chance to shut off her mind. And there are other reasons— more selfish reasons. I am a work-from-work mom, and giving her screen time gives me “me”time. I’m able to write while she watches TV. And while this may sound bad, I believe I am helping my daughter realize she should rely on herself. When Mommy works, she gets her own snacks, drinks and toys.
There are other benefits, too. TV has also taught my daughter. Thanks to “super Why”,she knew her alphabet at age 2, and thanks to “Sesame Street”, she was able to count to 20 by age 3. Also I use the screen as a great incentive. My daughter earns “IPad time” when she completes tasks, e.g., making her bed earns 15minutes while doing her homework gets her 30.
Of course, I have a few rules. During meals, the TV is off; all programs must be supervised; on weekdays, she is limited to two hours maximum. So remember: It doesn’t matter what our kids watch; it matters what they do, what they say, what they feel and how they act, and only you know what is best for them.
24.What can be learned about the author’s opinion about screen time
A.It fails to take kids into consideration. B. It is welcome by most crappy parents.
C. It challenges a popular belief. D. It corresponds with experts.
25. How can screen time be good for kids of mothers working at home
A. It gives them topics to discuss with friends. B. It gives them some easy time.
C. It enables them to keep their spirits up. D. It helps them become independent.
26. What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. encouragement B. relaxation C. idea producer D.learning tool
27. Which of the following might the author agree with
A. Science and technology are primary strength. B. A man is good-for-nothing until he is educated.
C. Nothing can be acquired without rules. D. Each coin has two sides.
C
What would you like to be when you grow up A teacher A doctor An astronaut What do you need to do to achieve your dream job
Perhaps you think that studying well and then going on to work hard will get you the successful career you want. We are continuously taught that our hard work will eventually pay off.
But a government survey has shown that hard work is not the only thing that will help you to move up the ladder(梯子). Two thirds of people believe that who you know matters more than what you know when it comes to social activity. So are the connections that you have more important than your education
Seventy-six percent of the people in the survey believed that family background is important in influencing your chances of success. They believed that if you are privileged(有特权的) from birth, you are more likely to have a successful career, especially if your family is wealthy.
Even if you don't have a privileged background, the people you know can still make a difference to your working is a skill which is encouraged by many career advisers. Some companies run networking workshops to try and encourage staff to meet other people, to communicate and build relationships. It's a valuable skill.
But the survey also showed something quite interesting. Although most people believed that networks are more important than education, many people put their own career success down to talent, rather than background. 41% of the people said that their parents' income had influenced their life, but at the same time, another 41% believed that they had achieved their own success.
So which is more important, what you know or who you know It seems that by working hard and making lots of connections, the answer may be that both are very important.
28.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined part
A.Practice makes perfect. B.Nothing is impossible.
C.Hope for the best. D.No pains, no gains.
29.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage
A.76% of the people thought social relationship matters most.
B.41% of the people believed parents' income had impacted their life .
C.76% of the people rated family background first.
D.41% of the people believed they had gained their own success.
30.What is the purpose of the writer to write this article
A.to stress the importance of education B.to tell the means of success
C.to illustrate how to make lots of social connections D.to encourage people to work hard
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.The Way to Success B.Keep Your Dream in Mind
C.A Wealthy and Smooth Career D.A Survey on People's Dreams
D
We all feel better after a night’s sleep and insects are no different. But new studies have found a commonly used pesticide (农药) is disturbing the sleep of bees and flies. In one study, researchers gave bees nectar sugar (花蜜糖) mixed with neonicotinoids (烟碱类农药)—one of the most commonly used pesticides—and then tracked their movements.
The impact of the pesticide — similar to the amount a bee would encounter in the wild —was terrible. “It seems to disturb the body clock in bees — they are sleeping a lot more in the daytime. It’s causing the disorder of timing of their normal behaviors,” Kiah Tasman, lead author of the studies, said.
This, she explained, could have serious results. “It’s quite worrying because our studies show that their motivation of searching for food has decreased. Besides, many plants including the fruit and vegetables and so on rely on pollinators (传粉者), like bees, to reproduce (繁殖). Bees take on a big share of this workload. Pollinators, most often honey bees, are responsible for one in every three bites of food we take, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, and they increase crop values in the US by more than $15 billion each year,” Tasman added.
But bees are under threat because of widespread pesticide use, habitat loss and the climate crisis. “If the time they are managing to go out and search for food is at night-time when many flowers aren’t available, that’s going to hugely reduce how successful they are at collecting the food that the bees needs to grow and reproduce,” Tasman said. “It could also affect how well bees are able to care for their young. Meanwhile, the same pesticide has already been found to damage the brains of baby bees.”
In a second study, the researchers focused their attention on flies, again exposing them to neonicotinoids. The results showed that the pesticide was working directly on the cells in the brain that run the body clock, which decides when sleep and activity happen in a day, and confusing them.
32. What is the most probable focus of the new studies
A.The amount of pesticide bees may encounter in the wild.
B.The movements of different bees.
C.The impact of pesticides on insects’ behaviors.
D.The similarity between bees’ and flies’ life habits.
33.What did the researchers find about bees taking in neonicotinoids
A.They lost the right sense of time. B.They could not find food quickly.
C.They suffered from sleeplessness. D.They had become much healthier.
34.What section in the magazine is the passage probably taken from
A. Health B. Environment C.Animal D.Medicine
35.What is Tasman’s attitude towards bees’ searching for food at night-time
A.Optimistic. B.Uncertain. C.Indifferent. D.Negative.

Skim milk(脱脂奶) was $2.99, on sale from $3.49; white bread, 89 cents with a ten-cent discount(打折); table salt, 99 cents, 20 cents off the regular price. Leaving the cashier(收银员), he estimated that he had saved 80 cents today. He was pleased that he had got good value for his money again.
At the exit, the freezing wind reminded him of his gloves(手套). "Now where are they " Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. The worried man made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must had been dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old George had bought the black gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35 ten years ago. His quick decision to buy the expensive gloves turned out to be a good one, which even promoted his social status on the bus, as poorer passengers stared at him enviously for six months out of the year. Losing this favourite gloves was almost like losing a child to him.
Bad luck, he thought. He entered the store again and followed the same route he had walked before, then the rest of the store. But it did not take long to be confirm that the gloves were not in sight. His sharp eyes could not have missed them.
"Society has changed, and people have changed," he said to himself. "Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would return it. Not any more!"
On his way out, he went over to the cashier to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but she said no. Then he went to the manager's office to ask the same question. She asked him what colour they were, and when he said "black", there came another disappointing answer. For such a pair of expensive gloves, who would give them up

If he bought a new leather pair, they would cost fifty dollars now. He was very upset that people no longer returned things they found on the road.
Paragraph 2:
After the holiday, poor George made a hard decision. He was to buy a new leather pair. Before boarding the subway, he stepped into Value Mart again to see if by any chance his gloves had been returned to the" Lost and found" office. "What colour are they " the woman in the office asked again. "Black," he gave the same answer. She looked into her drawer and drew out a pair of men's leather gloves. "Are they " "Yes! Those are mine!" answered George, his eyes shining with joy
