Chinese-language teacher Xie Fang is excited that one of her former students from Indonesia has been admitted to Beijing Language and Culture University. The 19-year-old student, Alvin Rizqi Adrian, achieved his dream of studying in China with a scholarship provided by the Chinese government.
Xie met the boy five years ago when she was selected to teach Chinese at Budi Utama Three Languages National School in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The school, founded in 2006 by local Chinese, teaches in three languages - Indonesian, English and Chinese. The school has more than 970 primary, middle and high students, half of whom have Chinese ancestry.
Xie taught students to speak and comprehend Chinese during her year at the school. “Most Indonesian children start to learn Chinese after they enter primary school,” Xie said. “But the textbooks from Singapore seemed relatively difficult for them at that stage. Xie modified the content of the textbooks to make it easier and more interesting for the Indonesian children to learn Chinese.
One student in particular, Alvin Rizqi Adrian, impressed Xie a great deal. “At that time, he was a middle school student. He was so interested in Chinese that he worked very hard to learn and practice,” she said. Since 2004, Guangdong has sent 1,000 Chinese teachers to more than 30 Chinese schools in 10 countries and regions.
Indonesia has the largest number of Chinese teachers sent from Guangdong, who mainly work in kindergartens, schools and universities founded by overseas Chinese. They usually spend one to two years on the foreign assignment. “Those days in Indonesia made me feel much appreciated. The local people have respect for Chinese teachers,” Xie said. She keeps in touch with her Indonesian students through the Internet. “If I had the opportunity to go to Indonesia to teach again, I would be very happy to see the children improve their Chinese,” Xie said.
24. What made the Chinese-language teacher Xie Fang happy

My friend and I went traveling in Tasmania, Australia last December. We settled in our Airbnb accommodation, a cozy apartment, not long after we arrived in Hobart, the capital city.
After briefing us on the kitchen's facilities and the whereabouts of the bedroom and bathroom, our hostess Geraldine resumed her ironing work, which seemed to have been interrupted by our arrival.
She was ironing what looked like security guard uniforms, and we soon found out that she worked in a local prison. And when she detected the curiosity in our tones, she offered a tour at the prison in her SUV. My friend and I exchanged a “this is incredible” look and said “yes” immediately.
As we drove, she told us about the buildings that we were passing, the local market and how to get to MONA, Tasmania's well-known contemporary art gallery.
And of course we got to hear some background information about the prison. According to our hostess, it currently holds Martin Bryant, a notorious criminal who cheated 35 people out of their property. We could see the high level of security from the layers upon layers of wires surrounding the gray structure inside.
Getting to know a city in such a local way is something I would never be able to do by talking to a hotel receptionist, and this is what I like best about the apartment-sharing experience, not to mention the fact that it's usually cheaper than hotel rooms.
But I'm fully aware of the risks of Airbnb, which is why I did my homework before booking online—I checked the reviews of the accommodation to avoid possible safety problems.
That said, it is the mutual trust between a host and a guest that fascinates me—the interesting feeling of building a bond with a total stranger.
28. Why did the hostess drive us to the prison
A. She planned to send the uniform to the prison.
B. She found our curiosity about the prison.
C. She wanted to show off her SUV.
D. She needed to offer a tour for us.
29. Which of the following can best explain the word “notorious” in Paragraph 5
A. Unfamiliar to everyone. B. Particularly disappointing.
C. Well known for being bad. D. Extremely generous to others.
pared with hotels, what is the writer's favorite of the Airbnb accommodation
A. It is cheaper in most cases.
B. It supplies a better living condition.
C. It offers a much safer accommodation.
D. It provides a chance to know local culture.
31. What does the author think of finding accommodation on Airbnb
A. Disapproving. B. Supportive. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful.
D
Could your cellphone give you cancer Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, power lines and wi-fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors.
Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany, in New York, thinks there’s a greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia (白血病). Also there’s a greater than 90 percent chance that cellphones can cause brain tumors. “It’s apparent now that there’s a real risk,” said Carpenter.
But others believe these concerns are unjustified. Dr Martha Linet, the head of radiation epidemiology(流行病学) at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don’t support warning labels for cellphones, ” said Linet. “We don’t have the evidence that there’s much danger.”
Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs (电磁场) and illness — so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigation of cellphones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the US, has been underway for several years. It’s funded in part by the European Union, in part by a cellphone industry group. The final report should come out later this year, but data so far don’t suggest a strong link between cellphone use and cancer risk.
32. From the passage we can learn that some people are worried because ________.
A. they have evidence that the use of cellphones can lead to cancer
B. they make a fuss over cellphone use
C. some experts have given a warning
D. cellphones are responsible for brain tumors
33. By saying “I don’t support warning labels for cellphones,” Dr Martha Linet has the idea that ________.
A. the worrying is unnecessary
B. cancer-warning labels should be on cellphones
C. there is a link between cellphones and cancer
D. cellphones have nothing to do with cancer
34. Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards the debate
A. Optimistic. B. Objective. C. Opposite. D. Casual.
35. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Cellphones: is there a cancer link
B. There is a link between cellphone and cancer
C. A research on the cellphone
D. The cellphone and radiation epidemiology

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Kevin had been eagerly waiting for the holidays to arrive. His mother had kept on hinting that there would be a big surprise for him during the vacation.
Kevin took out his scrapbook(剪贴簿). The exams had just finished, and the summer vacation had just started. Now he was free as a bird—free to draw, paint, play basketball, and watch television ... anything he wanted to do.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang, startling(使惊吓) him.
It was his pain of a cousin, Max. “Hi!” screamed Max as he jumped on Kevin’s bed. “I have come to stay here for the holidays.”
Kevin had never expected his mother’s surprise to be this bad. If this was the start of his vacation, then the next few weeks were going to be the worst experience of his life.
The next few days were horrible for Kevin.
After breakfast, Kevin decided to make a painting. Luckily, Max was not around. Kevin spread out all his art supplies and started painting some beautiful scenery. When he was doing the finishing touches, Max entered the room with a cola bottle. He slipped on some water, spilling cola all over the painting and totally ruining it.
The next day was even worse.
Everything was peaceful until the evening. It all started when Max put the dirty clothes in the washing machine. After some time, Kevin heard some strange sounds from the washing machine. He went to check and found that Max had put his best pair of shoes into the machine, along with the clothes.
One day, Kevin was looking through the newspaper when some interesting news caught his attention. He read it aloud: “The world-famous philatelist(集邮家) Dick Brown’s stamps were stolen last week from his house. Several other stamp robberies also have taken place, and police suspect that all the robberies are linked.”
This piece of news concluded by warning all stamp collectors to keep their stamps safe.
注意:
  (1) 续写词数应为150左右;
  (2) 请按如下格式作答。
Kevin had a nice stamp collection, and it was with his friend Alan. He decided to get his stamp album back

On the first blank page of the album, Kevin found there were two small words: Dick Brown.

答案:
Dear Mike,
This summer I am to attend an English summer camp for Sino-US cultural exchanges, which I have long been dreaming about.
This programme is aimed at promoting the understanding of the people and cultures between the two countries. During the two-week English summer camp, we will visit some famous American universities, experience American culture and customs, and tour places of interest in the US. Furthermore, we will also be offered a platform to practise our spoken English in an authentic language environment.
I am sure that this programme will help me better understand the cultural difference. Meanwhile, I can introduce my country to American students through this programme, which will definitely be a great success.
  Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
答案:
Kevin had a nice stamp collection, and it was with his friend Alan. He decided to get his stamp album back in order to keep the stamps safe. But Kevin was not available, so Kevin asked Max to get his album instead. He gave Max Alan’s address and told him several times to be careful. Max left and soon came back with the album without ruining it at all, which really surprised Kevin. However, when Kevin checked it, he found that it was not his album.
On the first blank page of the album, Kevin found there were two small words: Dick Brown. This was a big surprise for both of them. Actually, Max had gone to another house by mistake. The door of the house was unlocked and nobody was there. Max went into the room and found an album that was not Kevin’s. Kevin called the police and told them about it. Kevin and Max got a reward for helping to solve the stamp robberies. Kevin soon forgot the horrible things Max had done.
