When Emanuel received an email from Professor Richard English, Queen’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics, encouraging him to apply for a PhD in Politics in Belfast, it was a pinch-me moment Emanual never thought would be possible. After all, just a few short years ago, he was living on the streets couch-surfing at friends’ houses and weeding gardens to make ends meet. Now, one of the world’s leading political academics was preparing to welcome him to Queen’s University over 4,000 miles away.
Emanuel never knew who his father was and his mom was mentally ill when she gave birth to him, so the hospital took him off her and he was unofficially adopted for the first few years of his life. What followed was a childhood with uncertainty as Emanuel was passed between the adoption system and family members.
Through his high school and community college years, he moved from house to house, living with friends at times and living on the streets at others.
Determined to change all that despite his rocky start in life, Emanuel involved himself in school-doing everything he could to earn extra tuition (学费) money in his spare time. But getting accepted into university was scarcely possible because a person like him couldn’t get a regular student loan.
Fortunately, the government backed him, having created a policy allowing disadvantaged persons to access funding for higher education. He graduated from the University of the West Indies with a 1st Class Honors degree and went on to do his Masters.
Emanuel knows that his story could have been very different.
“I discovered Professor Richard English online and sent him an email honestly, not thinking he would reply and to my surprise, he did. I applied for the highly competitive Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme in order to fund my research at Queen’s. When I was told I was successful, my whole world changed.”
24. What does the underlined word “pinch-me” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Expected. B. Anxious C. Awkward. D. Unbelievable
25. What happened to Emanuel in his childhood
A. He was once adopted by his relatives.
B. He was abandoned by his mother.
C. His father was mentally ill.
D. He lived with his friends now and then.
26. How did Emanuel afford his university education
A. By receiving a regular student loan.
B. By getting support from the government.
C. By borrowing the money from friends.
D. By earning the tuition all by himself.
27. What can we learn from Emanuel’s story
A.You are the master of your life.
B. It’s never too old to learn.
C. Well begun is half done.
D. Lost time is never found again.

Known as “China’s most popular love comedy”, Romance of the Western Chamber is regarded as one of the best works of its time. The play was written over 700 years ago by Yuan Dynasty dramatist Wang Shifu (1260-1336).
Set in the Tang Dynasty, the play tells the secret love story between a young scholar Zhang Sheng, who is on his way to take the highest imperial exam in the capital city, and Cui Yingying, daughter of a chief minister of the Tang court.
After bandits(土匪) surround Cui at a temple, her mother promises her daughter’s hand in marriage to whoever can defeat them. Zhang manages to drive the bandits away, but Cui’s mother takes back her word because Zhang is poor. However, Zhang and Cui have already fallen in love. With the help of Cui’s maid Hong Niang, the two continue their romance and break many barriers.
The play incorporates much of the beauty of the poetry from the Tang and Song eras in Chinese history. Part of its appeal to readers is found in the style, grace and flow of the language. In fact, the play represents a high mark of achievement in romantic Chinese literature, and is quite popular. It has given rise to many sequels and rewritings, and also influenced countless plays, short stories and novels. The Peony Pavilion and Dream of the Red Chamber probably wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for Wang’s classic play.
The play also inspired generations of artists across various mediums such as woodblock prints, paintings and porcelain(瓷器). This fine art is still on display at places such as Freer Gallery of Art in the US and Kwun Tong’s Sun Museum in Hong Kong.
The ancient porcelain pieces depicting(描述) iconic(标志性的) scenes from the tale are indeed impressive. The characters are like “the superheroes from another time” Rachel Leung, associate curator(副馆长) of Sun Museum told China Daily. “It’s exactly like the Marvel franchise.”
“This story is basically about trying to break the societal strictures. It’s about courage and perseverance to pursue true love,” Leung said. “It’s surprising to know that centuries ago our ancestors imagined a story like that. They proved that they were not rigid or passive and they could be creative enough to make things for themselves.”
Indeed, Romance of the Western Chamber is known for opposing traditional norms associated with marriage and love during a more orthodox era. It has a positive take on marriage, emphasizing that true love should prevail(占上风).
28. What can we know about Romance of the Western Chamber
A. It represents the highest achievement in Chinese literature.
B. The characters in the story have supernatural powers.
C. It was composed earlier than The Peony Pavilion.
D. The appeal of the play is mainly found in its complex plot.
29. What can we infer from Rachel Leung’s statements
A. Courage and perseverance are of vital importance to social connections.
B. Everyone should take a positive and unconventional attitude toward marriage.
C. Romance of the Western Chamber enjoys popularity among the Marvel fans.
D. It was believed that our ancestors were conservative and lacked creativity.
30. What does the underlined word “orthodox” in the last paragraph mean
A. Open-minded. B. Conventional. C. Ambiguous. D. Dynamic.
31. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Rise of China’s Love Comedies
B. Love Comes First
C. Marriage and Traditional Norms
D. Wang Shifu and His Most Popular Works
D
Let’s face it. You’re likely reading this article in an effort to avoid some other tasks you’re procrastinating (拖延) to learn how to stop procrastination, but the clock is ticking. So why can’t you seem to get rid of that
Though the psychological causes are still debated, there’s a human tendency to over or underestimate the value of a reward based on its temporal proximity (时间接近). This is often referred to as temporal discounting. For example, if I offered you$100 today or 110 in a month, most would take the hundred and run. But what if instead I offered you 100 dollars in a year or 110 in a year and one month, you might say to yourself if I can wait a year I can wait the extra month.
But the time and value difference are the exact same in each example. It turns out that human motivation is highly influenced by how near the reward is meaning the further away the reward is the more you discount its value. So being online is more appealing than preparing for your test. The problem is surfing the Internet provides many small quick and continuous rewards unlike your test scores which are a future one.
So how do you overcome the urge to put off so many tasks
Unfortunately there is no definite answer, but try rewarding yourself with a timely snack or other enjoyable activities. The Pomodoro Technique makes use of a timer to work for 25 minutes straight and when you’ve done this give yourself the reward with a 5-minute break. Then start the working clock again, Gradually increasing the amount of work time you put in will improve your time management skills.
It’s been shown that creating a costly deadline is also an effective way to manage your working habits. And try to enjoy the process of achieving something instead of thinking only our minutes of suffering.
32. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. This article. B. The clock. C. An effort. D. Procrastination.
33. An example is given in Paragraph 2 to make the theory
A. understandable B. accurate C. interesting D. influential
34. Why is surfing online more attractive to students than studying
A. It supplies instant rewards to them.
B. It offers them more information.
C. It helps them kill time faster
D. It strengthens the bond between friends.
35. What’s a suggested solution to procrastination
A. Rewarding yourself with a future gift.
B. Paying dearly for your procrastination.
C. Ignoring the process of doing the task.
D. Increasing the amount of work time.

The Coming-of-Age Ceremony
Last Monday witnessed an exciting Coming-of-Age Ceremony.
All the Senior Three students gathered on the playground at 7:00 sharp in the morning. There were various activities to celebrate the coming 18-year-old birthday. One of them was walking across Longmen, which means a brilliant future waiting for us diligent students. What impressed me most was the moment when all of us made an oath about what should be done as civilized youths.
Thanks to the ceremony, I realize I have grown up and I should be self-disciplined and responsible for my behavior.
