The Sports Day was fast coming to the school. All the children were very excited and were practicing for the big race. Jim, one of the fast runners of the school, was confident that he would win so he was not doing anything at all. "You have to work hard to come first in the race, Jim. You are not practicing at all." said Jim's mother.
"Mom, you know how fast I am! Then why should I waste my time running Only I will win; no one else will win!" shouted Jim. "Jim, you may be right but talent without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you greatly," his mother warned him. Jim just laughed and shrugged (耸肩) his shoulders. He was so confident that he would win the prize as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!
Tom, a classmate of Jim, was also participating in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he was very devoted and practiced till late night and had developed great endurance (耐力) and willpower (意志) to win the race.
There were a few days left for the Sports Day but Jim did not practice at all. On the other hand, Tom practiced day and night. The Sports Day was almost around the corner but Jim was confident that no one could beat him and had not practiced at all. But Tom with his devotion and hard work had become a very fast runner.
At last the Sports Day arrived. All the students crowded the ground to cheer their favorites. The signal was given to the participants to begin the race. The coach blew the whistle and everyone began to run towards the finishing line. It was so exciting. Jim and Tom left all the racers far behind. Both of them were neck to neck.

I grew up in a small town where elementary school was a ten-minute walk from my house and in an age, not so long ago, when we children could go home for lunch and find our mothers waiting. At the time, I didn't consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be. Actually, our lunch time together in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it.
Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practiced my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped on stage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrators part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine(藤) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. "I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds," she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots. "From now on, we'll have only roses in this garden." I immediately protested, "But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions."
Paragraph 1 :
"Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty " asked my mother thoughtfully.

"But you will be a beautiful narrator," Mum said.

What started as a lonely graduation day for a teen in Alabama has turned into a priceless opportunity to bond with his teacher. Now, that teacher is working to get that student a car that will get him started in his adult life.
On Thursday, Bessemer City High School held its annual graduation ceremony. Dom Moore was one of the teachers involved in coordinating the event. After the ceremony ended, Dora was cleaning up. Nearly everybody had left to celebrate with friends and family, but one young man was still sitting there by himself. "I knew his moods and I knew he wasn't himself," Dora said. Not knowing what to say at first, the teacher told him, "I expect big things from you and it's going to be OK."
Dora assumed that someone would show up eventually to give the graduate a ride home. But nobody did. When Dora offered to drive him, the two had no idea that this was to be more than just a ride home. The teacher decided to take him out to eat-at any restaurant of his choice. They ended up at the Cheesecake Factory, and enjoyed a hearty meal and dessert to celebrate the graduate's achievement.
At first, the two were fighting back tears. But before long, they were having a great time together. Dom never asked why the boy's family did not attend the ceremony. What was important to him was that the young man felt appreciated for what he had accomplished. Later that evening, Dom took to Facebook to share a photo and some thoughts on the event. He says that he doesn't normally post about these situations, as they are all too common in his profession, but that something inside urged him to share this experience.

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn't sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned "secret friends" for the coming week. She wrote each kid's name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder(胭脂粉). The girls sitting near me laughed at the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in. "How terrible," I heard myself saying, "What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift My grandmother wouldn't even want it." The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn't normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.
Paragraph 1 :
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth (厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face.

Along with my apologies, I explained the reason.

As I was coming into Middle School, Grade Six, I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was going to be in the same Middle School as me! At first things were great, she introduced me to her friend, Amy and we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change. Jennifer was very controlling: I couldn't make new friends, because if I hung out with different people, she would decide that I was "mad at her and Amy". So I didn't make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer's friend became a battle between Amy and me.
Jennifer wanted to be the "leader" of our little group. Amy and I were never partners in class projects or gym; it was always, "Who gets the privilege(荣耀)of being Jennifer's partner. "It was either Jennifer liked me and she left Amy out or Jennifer liked Amy and she left me out. Amy and I both wanted to be Jennifer's number one. Being Jennifer's friend became the most important thing in the world.
I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after classes, so we could walk together to our next class. Amy and Jennifer chatted by Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door. Sometimes when they left, they'd walk right past me. No "Thanks for waiting". No "Sorry we took so long". It was as if they couldn't even see me. Yet I still waited after every single class.
Most of the time we gossiped(传播流言蜚语)about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer. Jennifer had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy. And I'm sure she had a list of bad things about me, too. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody, depressed, lonely, and I didn't smile much. I spent lots of days trying not to cry. I felt so left out.

In 1974, after filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get—a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen—teaching English.
School started and I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the classroom.
In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did. I was confident that the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. But in fact, humans particularly teenagers rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my taskmaster known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
My boss sat in the back of the classroom. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn't happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the classroom, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes, he left silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes.
Paragraph 1:
After class I took a deep breath and walked into his office.

Fifteen years later I still drive that winding road to the same school.

"Today's test score will decide who has topped the class, so be ready," announced Miss Natasha in the classroom.
Miss Natasha got everyone's test papers, cleared her throat to announce the results and handed out the test papers among the students. Everyone was nervous about their scores that would be announced soon.
Ali and Bob have been competitors since class one and each year either one of the two came first in the class. This year, there was tough competition between both of them, and they eagerly awaited the results.
"Peter, 18," announced Miss Natasha as she handed him his paper, "Eric, 16, Ali, 20, Bob, 19 ... and lastly Alia, 15."
When Miss Natasha had distributed the test papers in class, everyone found out that Ali beat Bob by one mark and topped the class. Everyone congratulated him and Ali was happy as he accepted everyone's congratulations.
As Ali was about to put his paper in his bag, he noticed that by mistake Miss Natasha had given him two marks for an incorrect answer. He was shocked. He rechecked his answers and realized that all his answers were correct except for that one. Now if he informed Miss Natasha about it, he would not only lose two marks but also his first position.
Considering the situation, he remained quiet and went home. But all day he kept thinking about it. Should he or shouldn't he tell Miss Natasha about it He thought that it had been already done, and no one would notice if he didn't tell anyone, but then another thought crossed his mind. If he didn't tell the teacher about it and stayed the position-holder in class, he wouldn't rightfully take the position as it clearly belonged to Bob.
This situation put Ali in a hard position. His parents always taught him to do the right thing, but doing the right thing here meant he would lose his first position. He remembered how everyone cheered for him and congratulated him in class.

My name is Adam and I'm a freshman at senior high school. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing.
Firstly, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take. I turned to the school adviser for advice. He is very kind and patient. He helped me choose the suitable ones: math, English, chemistry, world history, and Chinese. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to have a very good command of it and be fluent in it when I graduate. My adviser also recommended that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I'm good at it.
Secondly, I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too. I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I didn't play well enough. Obviously, I was unhappy and in low spirits, but I won't quit. I'm determined to practice more and make improvements on my own so that I can make the team next year. I joined a volunteer club instead. Every Wednesday, we work at a soup kitchen and hand out food to homeless people in the community.
Besides, in my first math class, I found the teacher speak too fast.

2. 答案:
"Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty " asked my mother thoughtfully. I nodded without hesitation, as if a second wasted could deprive the dandelions of their life. "The same to you," she added, her voice soft. ① "Not everyone can be a rose, and it is also an honour to be a dandelion." Knowing that my mother had realized my pain, I took off the musk that I had worn for the whole lunch time and poured out my unease heartily.(动名词表伴随状态;定语从句) She listened to me patiently and patted me on the back tenderly. Suddenly she stopped, as if to say something.
"But you will be a beautiful narrator." Mum said. She reminded me of how fluently I could deliver my part at home. ② It was at that time that I understood that maybe I was more suitable for a backstage role like a narrator. From then on, I practiced my lines heart and soul with my mother at lunch time for weeks. And the performance approached ultimately. Standing backstage, nervousness came flooding in me. What encouraged me to overcome it was the inspiration from the beautiful yellow dandelions.(名词性从句作主语) The performance that night was eventually a big success. Hearing the thunderous applause, I took pride in my role and firmly believed that even a dandelion had its own beauty.
3. 答案:
Actually, Dom wanted to help the young man. Dom shared his wish to raise money for the young man in the post. He hoped someone may be a blessing to this young man. Luckily, before long, generous people, many of whom were strangers, sent more than$5,000 as donations. Dom took him to open a bank account with the money. Dom wanted to help him buy a car, which can make his travel more convenient. He also taught the man to save up to attend college one day.
Dom thinks what these people did set an example to us. Dom felt amazed that so many people would help the teen. He has undoubtedly raised much money beyond his imagination. Dom thinks the story will remind us of what is truly important and give hope to those who are struggling. We usually take life for granted, but the story shows us that there is always beauty in our heart. Even though we have difficulties, at this moment it shows that mankind is good.
4. 答案:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth, tears streaming down her face. She shouted at me with anger, "If you don't want my gift, you can just leave it instead of laughing at it. There she was, sitting in a tree shadow wiping her eyes.

"Son, if it is the right thing to do, then I am sure you will be rewarded for it. A wrong thing may seem attractive at first, but if it is wrong, it will hurt us someday," his mum said.
"My son, you are a brave and honest boy so just do what you think is right," his mum continued. The next day in class, Miss Natasha announced, "Today Ali has done what only a few of us would have the courage to do. He came to me and told me that I had mistakenly given him two marks and he was right about it, so the first position goes to Bob, not Ali." Everyone, even Bob, was surprised by this development. Besides, in my first math class, I found the teacher speak too fast. I couldn't catch up with what he said in class. In order to change the situation, I asked my math teacher for help in private. He gave me so much advice on how to learn math well when we talked about the problem. With his help, I made up my mind to improve my math so that I could be better next term.
I know I'll have to study harder as a senior high school student and try to get used to the new school life. I am a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced course, and it will be quite difficult to get used to all the homework. Still, I am happy to be here. Studying hard isn't always fun, but I will be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future.
