Harry and Linda hiked along a stream and accidentally found a cave.
"Let's check it out," Harry said. Linda frowned. "Come on, just have a look," he took out a flashlight from his backpack and entered the cave. She disagreed, but unwillingly followed him inside. It was cool and wet. Bats rushed around, and water dripped(滴落) from the ceiling. They walked down a long passage until it branched in three directions.
"Okay, we've seen it. Let's turn around," she said. He started down the left passage. "Just a little further." She had to follow, but the return route became increasingly complex. He walked faster. She struggled to keep pace.
Suddenly, he fell. The flashlight flew from his hand, rolled across the floor, and disappeared. The cave went black. No flashlight; no matches! They had to follow the walls back to the entrance. They inched forward for a long time, but it felt like they were going in circles. They fought the panic.
They had no idea where to go. They stood by the cold wet stone, listening to the drip, drip, drip of water from the ceiling. Their anxiety grew in the total darkness.
Hours passed. She could smell the sweat on him. Something about that made her angry.
"If we survive this, you need to do the dishes more," she said. The words sounded strange in the darkness. He could picture her face: that familiar frown and discontented blue eyes. "What "
"The dishes," she said. "I'm tired of cleaning up after you."
He was sick of her complaint. "What about my lawn care You've never respected the effort that's gone into it. And you always wash your feet ten times a day. It is abnormal."
"I've always hated your mother," she yelled. "She regards me as a good-for-nothing, but I can't say anything to her. You need to stand up to her for once."
"She never liked you either. She warned me not to marry you, but I've always defended you. Always. Maybe I was wrong." They went silent.
During the next two days, several more attempts through the cave proved fruitless.

Deep in the forest, my husband and I had fun hiking through it. It was May, yet we walked up a snow-covered hill. This was our vacation, and we were on an adventure. We experienced many surprises in the forest. After a long time of exploring the forest, we decided to turn back.
The path was marked as an easy one-kilometer hike, yet we were already walking a long distance. Our excitement stopped when we saw a parking lot without our car in it. Nothing looked familiar. My heart raced. I realized we were lost in a national park.
Usually, I am the calm one in the relationship, but my husband surprised me with his calmness. This role change did not comfort me; in fact, it increased my fear. As we walked, I asked my husband to call for help, but there was no cellphone signal in this area. And we didn't have a map. It was strangely quiet except for the sounds of our footsteps and our heavy breathing. My husband suggested we should save energy and walk slower. With each step on the pavement, my feet hurt while my mind raced with thoughts about people who got lost in the Canadian woods for days. I was so anxious.
I looked around carefully and noticed everything around me: the trees, rocks and snow. I thought we could eat the snow on the ground if we needed water. For the first time in my life, I was ready and willing to be a hitchhiker(搭便车的旅行者), but we did not see a single car on the road. We focused on each other and made decisions together. We stayed on the main road and walked on and on.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, I spotted a small house on a hill in the distance.

Twenty years ago, Chase Poust was only 7. On Sunday morning just before the Memorial Day, he, his dad Steven, and his 4-year-old sister Abigail, were out for a family boating trip on Florida's St. Johns River. Chase and Abigail were swimming at the back of the anchored boat while Steven was on deck (甲板) fishing.
It was a perfect outing— it was so peaceful and the colors of the deep blue sky, the light green river water and the mild late May sunshine mixed to create a magic scene. Off the shore lay quietly several cottages. Everything was sound until a strong current emerged and loosened Abigail's grasp and she let go of the boat. Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away, Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her. At the same time, Chase screamed at his father desperately.
Without thinking twice, Steven jumped into the water and swam towards the two kids with all his efforts. But after realizing he couldn't keep up with both kids, he was faced with a heartbroken decision. He told them he loved them very much because he wasn't sure what's going to happen. Steven tried his best to stick with both of his children. He wore himself out. But his little daughter was washed away from him. Directing Chase to swim to shore for help, Steven stayed behind, keeping as close as he could to Abigail as the life-vest that was keeping her above the waves floated further and further from his reach.
It was a tough go for the 7-year-old, but rather than attempting to swim all out, Chase wisely paced himself. Stopping to float or dog paddle when he was tired, he'd rest and then set off again. The current was going the opposite way of going to the boat and the shore, so it was very hard to swim that way for Chase.

The year I turned 30, my friend Erin and I decided to hike part of Newfoundland's East Coast Trail—215 kilometres between Cappahayden and St. John's where the wild scenery was very charming! The path there would bring us great fun.
Neither of us had gone on a hiking trip longer than five days and now we were in for 14, but we were excited. Nature! Strength! Character! Our hike would end up giving me all of those things in cruel abundance, but there was one take-home I didn't expected: proof of the astonishing kindness of strangers.
As a shy woman schooled in the risk of stranger danger, I'm not one to open up to people I don't know. In Toronto I don't even chat with my seatmate on the subway or in a grocery line, and I certainly don't ask for help unless I'm desperate. But on this hike I had to learn new ways to cope.
Over our first two days we covered less than 30 kilometres, most of it in the rain. What had been a gentle mist when we started evolved into a downpour by the second day. Nothing dried overnight, everything was wet. The roads were rugged, with muddy patches so deep that stepping in the wrong place meant mud to mid-calf—which is to say over and into your boots. We squelched(发出嘎吱声)with every step.
All that was very awful for me. On our second day, as we were still on a road looking like cats left in the rain, a woman and her parents making their way from car to house caught sight of us and took pity. "Would you like to come in for a cup of tea " Jenny asked.
"Thank you!"

"I never wanted to come on this stupid hiking trip anyway!" Jeff's voice echoed across the narrow canyon (峡谷). Nothing was as pretty as it had seemed when they first hiked this way to their campsite yesterday morning. Before, the rocks had been an interesting challenge. Now, they were obstacles that were threatening their lives. Steep cliffs had earlier been natural curiosities, but now they were nature's weapons, beating and rubbing Jeff and his father who pushed through as quickly as they could.
His father stopped for a third time, pale and out of breath, and turned to look at the 12-year-old boy. "This is hard on you, son, I know. But you've got to come through with courage and calmness." "But I'm scared! I don't even want to have courage!" he complained, turning his head the other way, and wiped his eyes across his arm. "If not courage, fine." his father replied strictly. "Then have enough love for your sister to think this through!" He gently placed his hand on the boy's shoulder and continued, more softly this time. "I'm just holding you back. You're young, but you're strong and fast. Do you remember the way back from here to the road, if you had to go alone "
Jeff flashed back to the painful scene of his sister at their campsite this morning. She'd been bitten by a snake, before long she could barely move, and the pain seemed to be getting worse. She needed medical attention right away, so leaving her at the campsite and seeking help was their only choice. "Jeff Jeff, could you do it Could you climb up the canyon and make it without me "
Jeff looked past his father's encouraging eyes to the end of the canyon, several miles away. He nodded slowly as the path and the plan began to take hold in his mind. "What was the name of that little town we stopped in, Dad " "Flint. We parked at the side of the main road a few miles out of town." Jeff thought about this and then nodded.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm, "he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don't be late for supper, "Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!" "OK!" my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

Two months ago, my parents told me their plans for the summer. "We've booked a canoe trip(独木舟旅行) through the Boundary Waters of Minnesota," Dad said excitedly with his eyes shining. "Two weeks in Minnesota. No guide. Just the three of us, two canoes, and miles of water. Or we could go swimming in the wilds of Minnesota." However, different from his idea of a vacation, mine amounted to books, video games, and air-conditioned rooms.
We ended up here, sweating heavily. Dozens of mosquito bites already covered my arms. I complained to Mum. She said meaningfully, "If you're determined to be unhappy, there's not much I can say to cheer you up."
In the evening, we set up our tents and I was just settling down to reading. But then Dad insisted on my fishing and admiring the sunset with him! I looked at Mum, begging for her help, only to see her smile and wave goodbye to me. And so unwillingly I helped Dad load up the fishing equipment and put our canoe into the lake.
Dad couldn't have looked prouder after getting the worm on the hook. "Seth, have a try," Dad called. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, pulled the pole back, and cast. I opened my eyes. Success! "You're a natural fisherman!" Dad screamed.
We floated on the water for some time. It was actually a nice evening, all things considered. The sun was just beginning to set in shades of pink and orange, and the lake reflected the light with colourful waves. Then suddenly I felt a pull on my line.
"Dad, I think I got something! Help me reel(绕线)," I said, excited. He jumped to his feet to help. The canoe rocked from side to side. And then a fish burst from the water. "You did it, Dad! I've got the net!" I said. I leaned out to extend the net toward the fish. The canoe tilted(倾斜) heavily to one side. Then Dad placed one foot on the side of the canoe.

It was the hottest time of the year in southern California. Steve, a star basketball player at the University of California, with his cousin Zach, had planned a camping trip in the Great National Forest for their summer vacation.
The boys packed clothes and supplies into a bag, and began their great adventure with the dog Brady early in the morning. Upon arrival, Steve pulled over to the side of the road along the bank of the river. "A wonderful place for fishing," Steve exclaimed in delight. Zach nodded in agreement.
At high noon, the sun was scorching hot. With a good harvest of fish, the boys marched into the forest with Brady following them. After a long walk, they found a clearing that was ideal for a campsite (野营地). The camp was set up immediately as Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. An afternoon nap was absolutely a special treat in mid-summer. However, the boys were waken up by the fierce barks of Brady. Outside, heavy smoke filled the air and wind-blown flame was skipping from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer turned the forest into a tinderbox. In a little while, Steve and Zach were inside their tent packing their belongings.
"Let's go! We can make it back to the river!" They headed down against the fire-wind in the direction of the river. But Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that. Steve was uneasy for it was hard to find a safe way to escape in the heavy smoke.
Brady lifted his head and sniffed(嗅)the smoke-laden wind. Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared down a sharp slope(斜坡). The boys shouted for him, but he didn't come back. Steve couldn't blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didn't have a clue which way.

答案以及解析
1. 答案:
During the next two days, several more attempts through the cave proved fruitless. Food and water running out, throats going thirsty, they couldn't find the source of the dripping water. They barely spoke, falling into despair. Linda wondered if she'd wasted her life with him. Harry wondered if he'd married too young. They both wondered how their relationship would change if they survived. It would either flourish or die, but it couldn't stay the same. They grew weaker and more depressed with each hour.
"Let's give it one last attempt," she said. They gathered their strength and went down the passage. They stopped. "Listen! Flowing water!" Linda said. "We must be near the entrance. Let's keep going," Harry said with wild excitement. They followed the walls until a faint light broke the darkness. Standing in daylight, they gazed at each other in disbelief, and then they hugged each other for a long time with tears in their eyes. They walked towards their car hand in hand. Since then, Harry has done the dishes more often, while Linda has washed her feet only once daily.

Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, I spotted a small house on a hill in the distance. As we approached, we found it was a store. I was filled with hope and excitement. After opening the unlocked door, we walked into a dark hallway and wondered if it was open for business. Then a friendly woman appeared, saying, "Hello!" I tried to hold back my excitement and said, "We're lost!" The woman showed us a map of the park. After studying the map, we figured out that our car was parked over three kilometers away.
Paragraph 2:
The woman went into a back room and came back holding keys. She offered us a ride back to our car, which we accepted gladly. When we finally entered the correct parking lot, I looked up and said, "Thank you." My anxious heart calmed down when I saw our car again. Although we had just met the woman, I felt a connection to her as if we were old friends. I even had my husband take a picture of this woman and me together. Tired as our bodies were, we felt very happy.
3. 答案:
An hour later, Chase swam to the shore, anyhow. Once on solid ground, he ran to the nearest cottage and called for help. Hearing Steven's desperate cries, people in the cottage rushed out immediately. Realizing what had happened, they sprang into action. They rushed to the bank of the river following Chase and paddled their boat instantly with rescue equipment towards the dad and daughter. Meanwhile, someone called the Rescue Department. Soon after, rescuers arrived. All of them did everything they could to carry out a thorough search.
Luckily, Steven and Abigail were found and rescued. After ensuring their safety, people breathed a sigh of relief. Steven was deeply moved and expressed his gratitude to all the rescuers with tears swirling in his eyes. Then he hugged Chase and Abigail tightly and couldn't help weeping with joy. He couldn't be prouder of his son. It was the bravery, calmness and determination of the pint-sized superhero that changed everything. It was likely to be one Memorial Day the family would never forget.
4. 答案:
Para 1
We hurried to their lovely home. I was totally at a loss what to say when the woman supplied us new clothes since ours were all wet through the rain. Wearing the new clothes, warmth spread throughout my entire body. Throwing a warm smile at the woman, I thanked her from the bottom of my heart. "Would you like a cup of coffee " she questioned. Then, a cup of hot coffee was handed into my hand. I smiled, "Sure!" The next moment witnessed our happy time when we shared most of our travelling story. For the first time, the stranger's warmth found its way straight into my heart.
Para 2
We'd encounter more kindness on the trip. The next day, we continued our trip. Whenever we got into trouble, the travelers or the passersby would extend their helping hand to us. Tired and exhausted as we were, the kindness from the strangers really astonished me. From that trip on, I would always open up to people I don't know because I know most of them would be always ready to show their kindness.
5. 答案:
Paragragh 1:
He waved goodbye to his father and moved on. With great caution, he climbed over sharp rocks, crawled through dead branches and avoided the dangerous creatures, making his way up. At one point, he stopped just to catch his breath when suddenly, he stumbled over a rock and fell. A sharp pain went across his leg. "No, I can's stop," he thought, struggling to his feet. With blood dripping down his leg, he limped on. Rising stone by stone, he was closer and closer to the edge.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, he made it to the main road. Much to his disappointment, not a single person was in sight. He was just at a loss what to do when he heard the deafening noise of a vehicle. "A truck!" he exclaimed with excitement. Gathering all his energy, he yelled, waving both his arms. The truck pulled over. Anxiously, Jeff explained what happened. The driver instantly called the local rescue team for help. Eventually, Jeff, together with two medical workers, hurried back to the campsite just in time to save his sister.
6. 答案:One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. "What a lovely rabbit!" I shouted with excitement. It was quite different from those I saw in our city, thus immediately stimulating my interest. Dad was also stunned by this special rabbit, staring at it motionlessly. "Dad, let's catch it as our pet!" I suggested, unexpected receiving his prompt agreement. Entirely forgetting what Uncle Paul had told us, we ran after that pretty rabbit, frantic with rapture. Unfortunately, so clever and smart was it that it disappeared in the forest quickly. Not until then did we realize that the last ray of twilight was disappearing among the numerous trees and we couldn't find our track at all! We did get lost.
Paragraph 2:
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. The bone-chilling wind howled fiercely like a wolf, making the darkness even more suffocating. "Dad, what can we do " I threw my arms around him tightly, quivering and seized by dark horror. "All is going well!" Dad answered in a calm and gentle voice. We wandered in the scary forest and didn't know what horrible things would happen to us, hoping to find the way back. Suddenly, we heard the sound of water rolling down the river. We were over the moon and decided to follow the river. After a while, we heard the familiar sound of sheep and then caught sight of the farm house. The family were waiting for us in the distance. Seeing this, a radiant smile lit up both of our faces.
7. 答案:
"Dad! No!" I screamed. We slipped into the cold water before Dad knew it. Luckily, as a good swimmer, I made it to the surface quickly and easily. "Is this what you had in mind when you said 'swimming in the wilds of Minnesota' " I teased. To our relief, Dad and I managed to turn the canoe over with all our strength and we finally moved up on our hands and knees awkwardly. Though wet and cold, we cast a glance at each other and burst into laughter.
On the shore, Mum stared at us, with her mouth wide open. "What happened to you two " Mum asked suspiciously. "We had a fight with a fish," Dad said. Dad went into his tent to change out of his wet clothes, but I watched the last of the light fading away. I lay on the grass under the vast starry sky, enjoying the beautiful scenery and pleasant sounds from nature. I sighed with great relief and satisfaction. Perhaps the days ahead wouldn't be so bad after all and I could have a wonderful and unforgettable journey.
8. 答案:
Steve and Zach hadn't gone far when there was a familiar bark. Brady came bounding, stopped directly in front of Steve and hit him with his head, pushing him back toward the slope. But Steve didn't get it. Then Brady grabbed the boy's jeans and started pulling. The message was clear, but Steve hesitated. Of course he remembered Brady saving his uncle's life when the dog was much younger. Was he still sharp enough to get them through this
Brady pulled again, in spite of the boy's disbelief, urgently. "OK, big guy," seeing the fire was touching underbrush nearby, Steve made up his mind. Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees. Several times the big dog stopped. Often he changed directions to find the right way. The boys were so tired but the dog urged both boys to go on. Steve was almost numb when he heard it—the wonderful sound of rushing water! They made it back to the river.
