I took a job as a receptionist for a veterinarian(兽医) almost five decades ago. As an enthusiastic animal lover, I accepted the position on condition that I wouldn't have to assist with any wounded animals. I couldn't bear to see any creature in pain. At the end of my first week, we were closing the office for the day when a young man ran up to us holding a severely injured Doberman puppy in his arms and begging us to save his life. The four-month-old pup had been hit by a car.
The doctor and I ran back into the operating room. The only place the skin was still attached to this poor little animal's body was around one shoulder. The vet worked tirelessly for what seemed like hours, stitching(缝合) him back together again. That was the easy part. The puppy had broken multiple bones, including his spine (脊柱). Even if he survived the next few days, we were quite sure he would never walk again.
That day forever changed my life. The veterinarian guided me, and I became his assistant in all things. One of my first jobs was to give that Doberman puppy daily physical care. I remembered moving his tiny legs to try to keep his muscles from withering (萎缩). Weeks went by until one day, I felt this little fighter push back ever so slightly. And he continued to push back till he could finally use his legs. He recovered.
A year later, I walked into the clinic's waiting room and saw a huge Doberman who had been standing quietly with his owner on the opposite side of the room. I called the name of the next client.

The lumps(肿块) after the allergy tests showed their terrible messages that I am allergic to cats, dogs and fur. I cried because I knew what this meant. Our pets would have to go.
Our family of five lived on the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. My mother found neighbors who were willing to take care of our sweet dog, Tramp. My sister gave her guinea pig(豚鼠) to one of her friends at school. But I begged my parents to let us keep my beloved cat, Grungy.
We had adopted Grungy six years earlier in Turkey, from the Cat Lady, a kind figure who rescued wild cats. Grungy was once lost and found, in Rome, when he somehow missed our return flight back to the States, and again when he finally arrived at the base in Rhode Island, and escaped from his cage. For days, he walked around the airfield and followed an airmen until my dad learned from the airman and brought him home.
After that adventure, Grungy faced a new challenge: Because of my allergies, he would have to be given away. My mother wrote an announcement on the local newspaper. "Wanted: Loving family for a unique cat. Serious inquiries only. " She added our phone number and placed the ad. But I prayed that no one would call, but several people did. And our parents decided to meet a young couple who lived two islands away on Boca Chica Key. The young man had no children, but the young man's wife worked at home, so Grungy wouldn't be lonely when he adjusted to his new life.
I stood silent the day that they arrived to see my cat. I didn't want to like the soft-spoken man or his pretty, dark-haired wife. To our surprise, Grungy allowed them both to pick him up and hold him. Both of them stroked his soft head and promised to take good care of him. We were all sad to see Grungy go especially me. When I couldn't control my tears, I ran to my room.

We have a pit bull (比特犬). We found him a few weeks ago, walking along the road in a rural area. He jumping on cars, we thought maybe his family was camping somewhere nearby, so we passed him by. A few hours later, on our return trip, he was still in the same place, again, trying to get folks to stop for him. When he saw us, he laid down in the middle of the road, so we were unable to get around him.
We stopped the car and looked around for a few minutes, trying to figure out if anyone was around from whom he was separated. It didn't appear so. Then, we took a good look at the dog. He had no collar and he was really thin. We decided he was abandoned.
My husband said, "If he doesn't bite me when I try to pick him up to put him in the car, then we have a new dog. The dog happily joined us with no fight at all. The only thing we were in danger of was getting licked to death. He kept sticking his head between the two front seats and thanking us for picking him up.
The dog was clearly on the road for some time. He was extremely underweight. He was covered in scars and new wounds. We have guessed that some of the scars were from when he was on the road. We thought of possible fights with coyotes, but he also looked as though he was used to fighting other dogs. We figured his incredibly sweet personality was the reason he was abandoned. He can't have been a good fighting dog.
Therefore, we fed him a lot over the course of the next two weeks and he gained over twenty pounds.

We took him to the vet,

Cody and his sister April decide they want to have a pet dog. They head down to the local pet store and have a look around. It is a very small pet store that does not have many animals.
The owner of the shop is a nice old man named Mr. Smith. He walks over and greets Cody and April.
"How Can I help you " he asks.
"We would like to buy a dog," April responds.
"Ah, well, we are not a big pet shop," Mr. Smith tells her. "So we only have two dogs to choose from."
They ask Mr. Smith to show them the dogs.
Mr. Smith leads them to the back of the store where the two dogs are. One of them is a very big bulldog(斗牛狗) named Buster. It looks strong and fierce. The other is a very tiny chihuahua(奇瓦瓦狗) named Teacup. It looks cute and lovely.
April wants Teacup, the chihuahua, while Cody wants Buster, the bulldog. To make a decision, they walk outside to discuss.
Even after they have a discussion, they cannot agree on a dog. April suggests they race home for it. The winner of the race will choose the dog.
Cody agrees. Before the race starts, Cody tells April that her shoelace is untied. When April looks down, he runs off and gets a head start.
Cody runs as hard as he can. He really wants that bulldog as a pet. He looks back. April is so far behind that he cannot even see her.
Cody finally gets home. He is tired but he is happy. He knows he is the winner.

Many years ago, I thought I was adopting a mini pig, but it turned out that I was wrong when it reached 650 pounds. One night, about five years ago, I was surfing the Internet in the living room. Then I received a message from a former classmate. We hadn't communicated for a long time, so I felt a little surprised.
"Hey Steve," she said. "I know you love animals very much. I have a mini pig that is not getting along with my dogs. I can't keep it. Do you want it "
It's true that I've always loved animals. My first best friend was my childhood dog. So I was quite excited. A mini pig sounded lovely. The whole situation seemed a little strange, but I've always been a trusting person.
I replied casually, "Let me do some research and I will give you an answer later."
But I knew I wanted the pig. I just had to figure out how to make it happen, because I had many pets and a roommate.
A few hours later I got another message from her:
"Someone else is interested If you don't want her, this other person will take her."
You're probably smart enough to recognize this as a manipulative tactic (巧妙的策略), and normally I'm smart enough too. But I wouldn't let that pig go. So I told her that I'd take the animal. I gave her my address, and we agreed to meet near my house the next day.
I knew nothing about mini pigs.

The Jungle Adventures of Eduardo and Me
For the first time, I came in contact with one of the cutest animals I had seen in all my years of adventuring through the jungle, an orangutan.
To be honest, I thought wild animals would be more frightened of humans than this little creature was.
The following morning I woke up in surprise because I felt something getting dropped on my face. As I opened my eyes and looked around, I saw the orangutan in the same position as it was last night. The only difference was that it was eating some type of fruit. After I had watched its behaviors for a short time, I realized that when it had done eating, it would drop the peel of the fruit on me. Never did I imagine that the animal would still be here.
I began to pack up my gear so I could head out of the jungle while it was still light out. I also figured that if the orangutan was going to stick with me while I found my way out, I might as well give it a name. I took one hard look at it and the name Eduardo popped in my head.
"You look like an Eduardo, so that's what I am going to call you," I said to it. After named him, Eduardo looked up at me and smiled a full-toothed smile that I had never seen any animal ever made before.
My bag was packed, and, as I was about to set on, Eduardo latched onto my legs once again, thinking that I was going to leave him behind. "Come on, little guy. I guess you are coming with me," I told him as we started to walk. Eduardo unlatched himself from me, climbed up the trees, and started to swing from the vines in front of me. "Huh," I thought. "It's like he's leading the way for me." I put my trust in this little creature and followed the directions it was giving me for a good hour.
A little while later, I came to a complete stop when I realized that Eduardo had stopped. Being right in front of us was a not-so-nice looking tiger. Eduardo had stopped in the middle of hanging from a branch when he realized that the vicious animal was lying in my path.

Suddenly, Rawiri turned to the crowd and shouted, "Come on! We must help the whale. It's dying!"
Some people from the crowd answered, "It's too big! What can we do " Some adults smiled loudly. They thought Rawiri was just a idealistic kid.

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled(骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. "Man, that's a big dog!" he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it was not a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac's heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase.
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he'd be easily caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They did not think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realised that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

The car abruptly stopped in front of him.

His owner came to me and told me that he was the dog we had saved one year ago. More than excited to see him again in such good health, I hugged him tightly, determined to become a good vet technician at that moment.
I went on to be a vet technician for 14 years, and since retirement, I've volunteered at a no-kill animal shelter. Being a vet technician and a volunteer at the no-kill animal shelter. We even called the police, but we had to give up after some useless efforts. Grungy was just gone. As time passed, we accepted a new lifestyle with no dog barking at the doorbell and no guinea pig crying for lettuce every time the refrigerators door was opened. At least we knew the location of those former furry family members. However, where could Grungy be
Paragraph 2
Weeks later, when I opened the door in the morning, I saw Grungy sitting there. He was dirty and thin, but I didn't care. I picked him up and cried. Somehow, my charmed cat had traveled from Boca Chica Key to Key West on a journey that is about eight and a half miles of highway. How he managed such a miracle remains a mystery. Maybe that's because he loved us so much. To this day, we still remember the cat that walked miles to come home. And we should never underestimate the power of love.

Cody says sadly, and points at the only dog left. "We will take the chihuahua, please."
5. 答案:
I knew nothing about mini pigs. I didn't know what they ate; I had no idea how big they got. Once I started doing some Internet research, I found a few people saying that "there's no such thing as a mini pig," but I didn't pay attention. When we met the next day, I watched my former classmate handle the pig, and I could tell she didn't like it any more. The pig was tiny, maybe eight inches from nose to tail. The poor thing had pink nails. When I returned to my apartment, the only positive thing I could say to my roommate was, "She's a mini pig! She'll stay small!"
I felt joyful when I drove home with the newest member of our family. And luckily, my roommate also liked it. But there was one thing that we hadn't expected—the pig grew very fast. Now, I accept that there's nothing all that peaceful about being woken at 3 a.m. by a 650-pound pig. But we still love it.

The tiger still tried to jump into the tree but without success. After failing several times, the tiger left unhappily. Eduardo swung from the branch to the position where I hid myself.
Paragraph 2:

With those agreeing with him, Rawiri began to use whatever he got to pour water on the whale's body. More and more joined him. Eventually, the water began to rise and the tide was coming. The car abruptly stopped in front of him. "Come on, get in the car quickly!" Paul yelled. Without any hesitation, Mac jumped off his bicycle and dashed to the back door of the car. It was locked! Thinking of the wolf's bloody mouth, Mac was nearly dead with fright. He could even imagine the wolf's teeth tearing into his flesh. Just at that moment, the door was unlocked by Becky and the frightened man dived in, shutting the door just before the wolf pounced on him. So angry was the wolf that it kept roaring and smacking the window violently. Luckily, the car was hard to protect them. After quite a while, realising whatever it did was in vain and that it was impossible to catch Mac, the disappointed wolf left, disappearing into the woods eventually. Mac sat in the car, his heart still fluttering with fear.
Paragraph 2:
A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. They were surprised to find Mac's bicycle lying on the road, his tent bag torn and Mac just like a drowned mouse. "Mac, what on earth has happened " "I was almost killed by a wolf!" When told about Mac's thrilling experience, they couldn't help crying out, "What a narrow escape!" "Yes, without their timely help, I'd have ended up in the wolf's stomach!" Mac's friends were also grateful to Paul and Becky. Afraid that there might be more potential dangers ahead, Paul and Becky offered to drive them to Alaska. Whether they would enjoy the rest of the journey, only Mac could tell.
