In war, young soldiers talk about things that give them hope-fast cars, hobbies, friends and family. Peter Matthew Guenette was no different. He and his friends had made plans to go to Hawaii together, but it wasn't meant to be.
As a soldier, Peter had a protective instinct(本能)that showed itself in all he did.
On May 18, 1968, instead of sunning themselves at the beautiful seaside, the soldiers of Company D were surrounding an enemy base camp. Heavy fire from enemy soldiers rained down on Peter's army.
Peter and three other soldiers took cover in a shell hole. Suddenly, an enemy grenade(手榴弹)rolled into the hole between the soldiers. All at once, Peter shouted a warning and covered the grenade with his body. He died immediately, but his selfless action saved the lives of three men.
After death, Peter Matthew Guenette received the Medal of Honor, which was presented to his wife, Susan, by President Richard Nixon in April 1970.
Peter served with my father in Vietnam. They were best friends. The story of his death was often shared at family gatherings, and it's one that has impressed(使印象深刻)our families. As we remember Peter's death, let us celebrate the lives of those he saved. Let us honor all those who have fallen in service to the country, not by words, but by making a personal commitment(承诺)to those closest to us that we may give up ourselves so that others may live, and live happily.

Scientists have found that shopping daily can help one live longer. The research was done on 1, 850elderly people who were living alone at home. They were asked how often they went shopping, with choices from never to every day.
Nearly half of them never or seldom shopped during the week, and around one in four shopped between two and four times a week.A further 17% shopped every day, and the rest shopped just once a week.Almost two thirds of them were under the age of 75.Just over half were men.
Those who went shopping more than once a week were men and between the ages of 65and 70.They were also smokers and drinkers, who had better health, took exercise very day and had a lot of friends. Those who shopped daily lived longer than those who shopped less often. Those who shopped daily were 27% less likely to die, with men daily shoppers 28% less likely to die and women shoppers 23% less likely to die.
The researchers said that shopping could be a good method for good health to begin with, but suggested that shopping itself may improve health, by having a good supply of food to keep healthy meals, for example.
Shopping among the elderly may not always be about buying things, but about looking for friends or taking exercise, which is easier to do than more formal exercise that usually requires interest and energy.
The findings dispel the idea that good health only depends on physical activity; taking part in social activities in later life may also be good for better health.
David Oliver, a professor at City University, London, said, "The findings made sense. What the researchers have shown is that continuing to shop is good for happiness and good health."
29.The study was made by________.
A.comparing likes and dislikes of the elderly
B.examining the shopping habits of old people
C.looking at how often elderly people went out
D.collecting information about shoppers.
30.Compared with women daily shoppers, men shoppers________.
A.seldom go shopping without their friends
B.usually go into the shop without buying things
C.are more likely to live longer
D.are easier to become happy.
31.Where does the text most probably appear?________
A.In a research report. B.In a fashion magazine.
C.In a storybook. D.In a shopping guide.

It is well said that strength and courage aren't always measured in medals and victories. They are also measured in the struggles we experience. The strongest people aren't always the people who win but the people who don't give up when they lose.
It's been said that Andrew Jackson's boyhood friends just couldn't understand how he became a famous general and then the President of the United States. They knew of others who had greater talent but who never succeeded. One of Jackson's friends said, "Jim Brown was not only smarter, but he could throw Andy three times out of four in a wrestling match. But look where Andy is now."
Another friend answered, "How did there happen to be a fourth time Don't they usually say three times and out "
"Sure, they were supposed to, but not Andy. He would never admit(承认)he was beaten—he would never stay 'thrown'. Jim Brown would get tired, and on the fourth try Andy would throw him and be the winner."
Andrew Jackson just wouldn't stay "thrown"!And that determination served him well for many years.
Life will knock us off our feet again and again. But some people just won't stay "thrown". They get up again, dust themselves off and go for it one more time. These are people of courage. They are also people of faith and hope. Maybe you have been knocked off your feet. Will you stay "thrown" or will you rise and give it your best one more time?
Which of the following is not used to measure strength and courage according to the first paragraph
A.Struggle. B.Medals. C.Victories. D.Power.
33. According to the passage, what made Jackson suceessful
A.Being independent. B.Being intelligent.
C.Being determined. D.Being confident.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.All good things will come to an end.
B.We should never lose hope for future.
C.We all experience different sufferings.
D.Be careful and keep away from trouble.
35. What is the best title of the passage
A.How You Become a Great Man B.Why You Behave Differently
C.Whether You Will Be Beaten D.When You've Been "Thrown"
