Teenagers who start the school early are likely to weigh slightly more than those who start later. That’s the finding of a new study of nearly 30000 Canadians between the ages of 10 and 18.
Getting too little sleep can put kids at risk for a number of problems. Sleepy teens are more likely to be overweight, to have trouble concentrating and to struggle in school. Genevieve Gariepy, who works at Mcgill University in Montreal, Canada, wanted to know how earlier school start times might be connected with weight.
“Overweight in teenagers is a big problem in North American,” she says. The number of overweight kids has grown over the past 30 years. So Gariepy decided to home in on the impact (影响) of school start times.
Her team collected start times for 362 Canadian schools. Then they asked students at those schools to give their height and weight. In all, they collected data from nearly 30,000 10 to 18-year-olds. Among 6th-to 10th-graders, those who started school earlier were likely to be slightly heavier for their height. Every 10-minute delay in school start time was connected, on average, with a lightly lower weight among students who were the same sex, age and height. However, the difference is slight. Healthy eating and getting enough exercise will play a bigger role in keeping a healthy weight.
As the study compared kids who already started school at different times of day, it’s not clear that changing school start time would help heavier kids lose weight. To know for sure, researchers would want to compare the same kids before and after changing to a later school start time.
Still, the study is a good start, says Cora Bruener, a doctor at Seattle Children’s Hospital in Washington. The findings add to a growing pile of evidence that later school start time might be better for teen health, she says.
4. What is the finding of the new study
A. Teens who start school earlier are a little overweight.
B. Healthy diets and enough exercise help reduce weight.
C. More and more teens are growing overweight.
D. Teens who start school earlier do not perform well.
5. What does the underlined phrase “home in on” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Reduce. B. Judge. C. Move to. D. Focus on.
6. How did Gariepy’s team get their finding
A. By recording the teen’s weight. B. By comparing different sets of data.
C. By checking the teen’s physical health. D. By measuring the teen’s height.
7. What does Cora Bruener think of the study
A. It needs improving. B. It lacks further support.
C. It has inspiring value. D. It is well designed.
C
Earth's forests are emptying.
Half of their inhabitants(栖息动物) have disappeared in the last 40 years, according to a latest report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The report tracked populations of 268 species of forest-dwelling birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles worldwide between 1970 and 2014(the most recent year for which data is available). The results show that forest animal populations have declined by 53% worldwide, and humans are to blame.
More than 80%of all land animal, plant, and insect species call forests home. However, a combination of habitat destruction, hunting, the spread of invasive species, climate change, and diseases are killing off forest animals, the researchers said.
Without those animals, forests can't perform the functions we rely on, since animals pollinate(授粉) forest plants, spread seeds, and nourish the soil with their waste.
“Forests depend on a complete animal world to perform. functions essential to life,” Susanne Winter, a program director at the WWF, told Eco Watch.
One of the most critical roles forests play is in easing climate change. Trees suck enormous amounts of carbon dioxide out of the air and embed (吸纳) the carbon in their wood and the soil. A recent study found that planting new trees over an area the size of the US could suck away two-thirds of all the carbon dioxide emissions that humans have pumped into the atmosphere.
“Without animals, it is harder for forests to absorb carbon, as tree species important for protecting the climate could be lost without animals,” Winter said. Without them, those trees would have difficulty reproducing and forests would lose their best carbon-storing trees.
“Forests are our greatest natural ally in the fight against global warming,” Winter said. “If we want to reverse the worldwide decline in biodiversity and prevent the climate crisis, we need to protect the forests and the species living there.”
8. What do we know from the passage
A. Half of earth's forests have emptied.
B. 268 forest-living species have died out.
C. The number of forest animals has decreased.
D. 80% of forest animals have lost their homes.
9. How many reasons are mentioned for the extinction of forest animals
A. Five. B. Four. C. Three. D. Two.
10. What is the key function of forests mentioned in this passage
A. Nourishing the soil. B. Producing carbon dioxide.
C. Pollinating forest plants. D. Easing climate change.
11. Which of the opinions may Susanne Winter agree with
A. Forests will disappear eventually.
B. We can't reverse the decline in biodiversity.
C. Forests can suck away all the carbon dioxide emissions.
D. Animals are vital to forests when it comes to reproducing.
D
From good reading we can gain pleasure, companionship, experience and instruction. A good book may absorb our attention so completely that for the time being we forget our surroundings and even our identity.
Reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in life. It increases our contentment when we are cheerful and lessens our troubles when we are sad. Whatever may be our main purpose in reading, our contact with good books should never fail to give us enjoyment and satisfaction.
With a good book in our hands we need never be lonely. Whether the characters are taken from real life or are purely imaginary, they may become our companions. In books we can walk with the wise and the good of all lands and all times. The people we meet in books may delight us either because they resemble human friends whom we hold dear or because they present unfamiliar types whom we are glad to welcome as new acquaintances. Our human friends sometimes may bore us but the friends we make in books need never weary us with their company. By turning the page we can dismiss them without any fear of hurting their feelings. When human friends desert us, good books are always ready to give us sympathy and encouragement.
One of the most valuable gifts from books is experience. Few of us can travel far from home or have a wide range of experiences but all of us can lead varied lives through the pages of books. Whether we wish to escape from the dull realities of everyday life or whether we long to visit some far-off place, a book will help us when nothing else can. To travel by book we need no bank account to pay our way; no ship or train to transport us; no passport to enter the land of our heart’s desire. We can climb high mountains, brave the dangers of deep oceans or cross the hot sands of the desert without hardship. Indeed through books the whole world is ours for the asking. The possibilities of our literary experiences are almost unlimited. The beauties of nature, the treasures of art, the glory of humanity are all open to the enjoyment of those who read.
12. Why do we sometimes forget ourselves while reading
A. The book is so fascinating. B. All is quiet and calm around us.
C. No one is trying to disturb us. D. Our life is far from satisfactory.
13. Why do people like the friends in books even more
A. They are like our human friends. B. They are unfamiliar types we like.
C. They never abandon us. D. They never hurt our feelings.
14. “…the whole world is ours for the asking.” means that we can ________.
A. actually possess everything in this world
B. get anywhere in the world by asking
C. make a trip around the world free of charge
D. experience the whole world just by reading
15. What will the next paragraph probably cover
A. Companionship. B. Pleasure. C. Instruction. D. Experience.

Teenagers who start the school early are likely to weigh slightly more than those who start later. That’s the finding of a new study of nearly 30,000 Canadians between the ages of 10 and 18.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7.

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11.

D. Experience.
