Wales is home to some of the UK's most beautiful drives.Narrow lanes criss-cross the land. meaning travel can be slow-but there's no need to rush.
The Coastal Way
This route(路线)covers the entire length of Cardigan Bay, and spoils travelers with its remote beaches and charming seaside towns.
Comb the sand for fossils, shells at Aberdaron Beach, and then hit the road, heading cast toward Porthmadog. Here you can hop on a heritage steam train, a relic of the region's mining history,to give Snowdonia's skyline your undivided attention.
The Cambrian Way
The Cambrian Way, which cuts north to south through the heart of Wales, is a fantastic place, thanks to its patchwork fields, dense forests and rolling, sheep-dotted hills.
The route becomes increasingly wild and rough as it weaves north into Powys. Spend the night in Rhayader, and you'll need plenty of energy for hiking or mountain biking along the trails.
The North Wales Way
Spanning Wales' short but scenic north coast, this route offers road trippers a chance to encounter Welsh history, language and culture in a splendid setting.
Head west through the uncrowded Clwydian Hills until you reach Ruthin, a little town brimming with history, where you can see its restored castle, century-spanning museum and Victorian Ruthin Gaol. Border Country
Tracing the dotted line that separates England and Wales on a map, this border-hugging route will take you to some of Wales' most underrated sites slowly, if you stick to the narrow back roads.
Starting in the border town of Chepstow in Southeast Wales, make your way northward. You can top to admire the roofless ruins of Tintern Abbey and lesser known castes Skenfrith and Grosmont

In the final of the 1985 world open squash(壁球) championship, Pakistan's Jahangir Khan defeated New Zealand's Ross Norman and won the championship. That decisive victory made Khan the first man ever to win the world open squashcrown five times in a row.“Jahangir Khan,” says British sports commentator Richard Eaton, “is the world champion of world champions.”
Until recently,Khan's achievements would have stirred few people, for squash was largely an elitist(精英)male preserve. No longer. During the past decade, the game has boomed worldwide, and is now a sport played by more than 20 million men and women in more than 100 countries. It is widely played in Australia,New Zealand, Europe and Southeast Asia, and is one of the fastest-growing sports in Canada. In Australia, nearly 500,000 people play squash regularly.
Squash has caught on because it's suited to busy lifestyles. It's easier for a beginner to play than tennis, and provided a good workout in just half an hour. At its higher reaches, though, squash stretches mind and body to their limits. It calls for speed, strength, a talent for delicate shot-making and, above all, a single-minded determination to keep going.
Why is Jahangir Khan so superior in this flashing, high-speed game, perhaps the subtlest and most exhausting of all the racquet(球拍) sports For one thing, he's superbly built: 1.78 metres tall,67 kilos, with arms, chest and legs that are rock-hard and wrists like steel. His ancestry helps, too. Khan's ancestors were Pathans. Pathans have a reputation for being trigger-happy, but Khan's relatives were far deadlier with squash racquets than with guns. His father, Roshan, uncles Hashim and Azam and cousin Mohibullah dominated world squash in the 1950s and 1960s.
But Khan's most precious quality is an extraordinary desire to excel. “Squash has more naturally gifted players,” admits his coach, Rahmat Khan, “but no one who works as hard, no one else who, even when on top, never lets up.”
4. Why is Jahangir Khan referred to as “the world champion of world champions”?
A. He defeated New Zealand's Norman.
B. He showed great excellence in squash.
C. He was the first to win the championship.
D. He won the squash championship in 1985.
5. What does the underlined word "stirred" mean in the second paragraph
A. Excited.
B. Disturbed.
C. Absorbed.
D. Bothered.
6. Which of the following best describes the cause of Squash's growing popularity
A. It is a good substitute for tennis.
B. It is a relaxing sport for all ages.
C. It shows one's strength and talent.
D. It fits in with the needs of modern life.
7. What is the key factor leading to the success of Jahangir Khan
A. His strong build.
B. His strong will.
C. His family's support.
D. His talent in sports.
B 5. A 6. D 7. B

根据文中第一段第二句“That decisive victory made Khan the first man ever to win the world open squash crown five times in a row.(这一决定性的胜利使可汗成为有史以来第一个连续五次赢得世界壁球公开赛冠军的人。)”可知,由于他在壁球上卓越的表现,才被称为“the world champion of world champions(世界冠军中的冠军)”。故选B项。

C
One of the biggest concerns in science is bias(偏见)-that scientists themselves, consciously or subconsciously may put their thumbs on the scales and influence the outcomes of experiments.Boffins have come up with all sorts of strategies to try to remove it, from having their colleagues repeat their work to the “double blinding” common in clinical trials, when even the experimenters do not know which patients are receiving an experimental drug and which are getting a sugar-pill placebo(安慰剂)。
But gathering the data and running an experiment is not the only part of the process that can go wrong. The methods chosen to analyze the data can also influence results. The point was demonstrated by two recent papers published in a journal called Surgery. Despite being based on the same data, they drew opposite conclusions about whether using a particular piece of kit(工具包)during surgery reduced or increased the chances of infection.
A new paper, from a large team of researchers headed by Martin Schweinsberg, a psychologist at a European School in Berlin, helps shed some light on why. Dr Schweinsberg asked analysts to explore two seemingly straightforward theories. The first was that a woman's tendency to participate would rise as the number of other women in a conversation increased. The second was that high-status participants would talk more than the low-status participants.
As it turned out, no two analysts employed exactly the same methods, and none got the same results. Some 29% of analysts reported that high-status participants were more likely to contribute. But 21% reported the opposite.Things were less finely balanced with the first theory, with 64% reporting that women do indeed participate more, if plenty of other women are present. But 21% concluded that the opposite was true.
The problem was not that any of the analyses were wrong 'in any objective sense. The differences arose because researchers chose different definitions of what they were studying, and applied different techniques. When it came to defining how much women spoke, for instance, some analysts chose the number of words in each woman's comment. Still others defined it by the number of conversations that a woman participated in,regardless of how much she actually said.
8. What does the underlined word"it'" refer to in the first paragraph
A. Experiment. B. Scale.
C. Thumb. D. Bias.
9. What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2
A. The process of gathering the data can go wrong.
B. Different methods of data analysis lead to different results.
C. The way of assessing the experiment influences the results.
D. Using special kits during surgery reduces the chances of infection.
10. What caused analysts to apply different methods in Dr Schweinsberg 's research
A. Choice of definitions.
B. Choice of subjects.
C. Understanding of conversations.
D. Understanding of theories.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Bias doesn't exist
B. Data don't lie
C. Experiments count
D. Scientists mislead
D 9. B 10. A 11. B
根据上文“One of the biggest concerns in science is bias(偏见)-that scientists themselves, consciously or subconsciously may put their thumbs on the scales and influence the outcomes of experiments.(科学界最大的担忧之一是偏见——科学家自己,有意识或潜意识地,可能会把他们的拇指放在天平上,影响实验的结果。 )”可知,作者在第一句点明了所阐述讨论的重点,也即一种科学界普遍关心的“偏见”问题。后文即都为对其的细节补充。所以根据逻辑连接,下文中人们尝试着尽可能消除这种“偏见”,由此it指代“偏见”,即Bias,故选D。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。第二段1,2句说“But gathering the data and running an experiment is not the only part of the process that can go wrong. The methods chosen to analyze the data can also influence results.(但是收集数据和进行实验并不是整个过程中唯一可能出错的部分。选择分析数据的方法也会影响结果。 )”,后文进行了详细的展开描述,从而论证这一观点,因此第二段主要讨论了不同的数据分析方法导致不同的结果,即Different methods of data analysis lead to different results,故选B。
根据最后一段1,2句“The problem was not that any of the analyses were wrong 'in any objective sense. The differences arose because researchers chose different definitions of what they were studying, and applied different techniques.(问题不在于任何客观意义上的分析都是错误的。之所以会出现这种差异,是因为研究人员对他们所研究的内容选择了不同的定义,并使用了不同的技术。)”我们可知,在上文所举例子中最重要的是这些数据本身并没有任何问题,因为研究者采取了不同的定义及采取的不同的实验技巧,才导致最终结论的不同。故选择A选项。同时呼应上文中的“the method to analyze the data can also influence the results.(分析数据的方法也会影响结果。)”,故选A。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段的“The problem was not that any of the analyses were wrong 'in any objective sense. The differences arose because researchers chose different definitions of what they were studying, and applied different techniques.(问题不在于任何客观意义上的分析都是错误的。
D
A search of Chinese social media produces almost no posts on the subject: shutdown-related concerns expressed by Chinese are primarily about the safety of themselves, family and friends; change of lifestyle; boredom and the resulting social conflict due to close and extended interaction time while simultaneously managing work, childcare and household tasks. A review of China's academic literature likewise produces no articles.
This may seem strange. Shouldn't the group-oriented Chinese have more social-distancing anxiety than Americans, not less To give a little background: Individuals in both Western and Eastern societies have social needs, which we meet in a variety of ways. However, our “go-to” strategies do tend to differ. In the more individualistic West, we love our families, of course, but tend to rely heavily on friendship as well-on elective ties reflecting “who we really are." Beneficial to personal growth, these friendships can develop into “chosen families”.
But these relationships depend on subtle in-person interaction, which, unfortunately, is made difficult by social distancing. Cornell researchers Duyen Nguyen and Susan Fussel have shown that compared with the Chinese, Americans rely more on nonverbal behavioral cues such as head turns, facial expressions and eye contact to support communication.
We can also be more skittish—more likely, for example, to owe a lack of affirmative body language to a lack of interest or involvement. As these sorts of subtle behavioral cues are poorly conveyed by electronic media, Americans now reliant on Zoom or Face Time can find it hard to maintain a sense of connection with others.
In contrast, people in more collective societies like China tend to meet their social needs with given or blood ties-with family or schoolmates, for example. Indeed, the lab run by one of us recently found that Asians can get a sense of closeness from almost any kind of social exchange, including talking about the weather. A sense of connection is thus easily maintained even during long periods of social distancing.
12. What subject did the author search for on the Chinese social media
A. Change of lifestyle. B. Social-distancing anxiety.
C. Social conflicts. D. Close interaction time.
13. Which of the following is true about Westerners
A. They rely heavily on body language in communication.
B. They stay connected with others easily through Zoom.
C. They value their family members more than friends.
D. They get a sense of closeness from any kind of social exchange.
14. What is the probable nationality of the author
A. Chinese. B. British. C. American. D. Japanese.
15. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. What we can do to solve the shut-down related concerns.
B. How social media influence westerners' communication.
C. What social distancing reveals about East-West differences.
D. How Chinese meet their social needs in times of social distancing.
B 13. A 14. C 15. C
根据第一段“A search of Chinese social media produces almost no posts on the subject: shutdown-related concerns expressed by Chinese are primarily about the safety of themselves, family and friends; change of lifestyle; boredom and the resulting social conflict due to close and extended interaction time while simultaneously managing work, childcare and household tasks. (在中国社交媒体上搜索一下,几乎找不到关于这个话题的帖子:中国人表达的与隔离有关的担忧主要是关于他们自己、家人和朋友的安全;生活方式的改变;无聊和由此产生的社会冲突,这是由于同时管理工作、育儿和家务的亲密和延长的互动时间)”以及第二段中“This may seem strange. Shouldn't the group-oriented Chinese have more social-distancing anxiety than Americans, not less (这可能看起来很奇怪。以群体为导向的中国人不应该比美国人更有社交距离焦虑吗?)”可推知,作者在中国社交媒体上搜索的主题是社会距离的焦虑。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Cornell researchers Duyen Nguyen and Susan Fussel have shown that compared with the Chinese, Americans rely more on nonverbal behavioral cues such as head turns, facial expressions and eye contact to support communication.(康奈尔大学的研究人员Duyen Nguyen和Susan Fussel发现,与中国人相比,美国人更多地依赖于非语言行为线索,如转头、面部表情和眼神交流来支持交流)”可知,关于西方人的说法中,A选项“他们在交流中严重依赖肢体语言”正确。故选A。
根据第二段中“In the more individualistic West, we love our families, of course, but tend to rely heavily on friendship as well-on elective ties reflecting “who we really are.”(在更加个人主义的西方,我们当然爱我们的家庭,但也倾向于严重依赖友谊和反映“我们真正是谁”的选择性关系)”可知,谈及“west”时作者用的人称为“we”,所以首先排除选项中的日本和中国两个亚洲国家,且又因为全文分析比较时只出现了美国这一个国家,也即站在作者本国,即美国的立场上与东方进行比较,故推知作者是美国人。
根据第二段中“This may seem strange. Shouldn't the group-oriented Chinese have more social-distancing anxiety than Americans, not less To give a little background: Individuals in both Western and Eastern societies have social needs, which we meet in a variety of ways.(这可能看起来很奇怪。

C 17. B 18. D 19. A 20. G
根据前文“Have you ever agreed to do something only to find out later that you don't have time Are you constantly stressed from rushing from one assignment to another?(你是否曾经同意做一些事,但后来发现,你没有时间?你是否经常因为从一个任务匆忙到另一个任务而有压力?)”可推断,后面的句子应该是对前文这种现象“过度承诺”的解释,C项中的“overcommitment”语境一致,因此C项“如果是这样,你可能会有过度承诺的问题。”符合语境,故选C。
【17题详解】
下文“Your quality of life also suffers because overcommitment leaves you less time to take care of yourself.(你的生活质量也会受到影响,因为过度承诺会让你有更少的时间来照顾自己)”讲述过渡承诺带来的影响,因此推断B项“当这种情况发生时,你的工作质量就会受到影响。”
前文“The total amount of time you have each day equals 24 hours minus the time you need for basic wellness activities.(你每天的总时间等于24小时减去你进行基本健康活动所需的时间。)”
下文“Schedule times for everything you need to do including taking care of yourself. But don't feel forced to fill every blank space.(安排你需要做的一切事情,包括照顾好自己。但不要觉得自己是被迫填补每一个空白的)”可知,前文要强调安排时间的重要意义,A项中“合理分配时间”作为引导语,因此推断A项“合理安排时间是重要的”符合语境。故选A。
上文“That's because my first instinct is usually to say yes, even if I don' t really have time.(那是因为我的第一本能通常会说是的,即使我真的没有时间)”可知,这里应该选用“have time to think”表示呼应与对比,G项中的“Having time to think”符合,因此推断G项“如果我需要,有时间考虑一个潜在的任务给我空间说不。”

Hearing that you are going to do a presentation on "gene editing" in your class next week, I would like to share with you some relevant information.
Genome editing allows geneticists to treat a wide range of health problems, such as restoring a blind person's vision. By correcting abnormal genes early on, it ultimately prevents diseases from ever developing. It may even help us enhance healthy bodies or select specific characteristics for unborn children.
But with the development of genome editing come some moral issues and consequences. Therefore, we have to put appropriate controls in place to keep the technology from running wild and make sure it works to our advantage.
I am hopeful that the above information is useful to you.

Chris sighed. No way am I going to talk about my favorite hobby, he thought. His older brother, Wes,laughed at him about it enough-and his dad didn't think much of it,either.
On the bus,Chris heard others talking about the “hobby thing".Brian said he was going to bring his bowling trophies(保龄球奖杯)。Chris turned back around in his seat so he wouldn't have to talk to him anymore.
"Don't believe him,"Nick whispered."He's the worst bowler I've ever seen.He borrows the trophies from his dad,I guess. He's really fake."
At home,Chris puled out his bores of baseball cards. He liked baseball, even played some. But his really hobby let him express things from his imagination, and that’s what he liked most.Sorting through his cards, Chris began choosing some of the best ones.Yet he did not feel right about what he had decided.
Tuesday passed. Chris gathered his baseball supplies and put them in a grocery bag marked “My Favorite Hobby".He was ready for Friday, but some:thing still felt wrong. He walked out of his room, ignoring the sketchpad(草图本)on his desk.
Wednesday. After school Chris sat at the kitchen table with a sandwich, but he wasn't hungry. He didn't want to be fake like Brian, but he wasn't sure he had the courage to tell everyone his real hobby.
What would the guys think of him
He chewed his sandwich slowly, thinking of Grandma. She was the reason he'd gotten interested in his hobby in the first place.“You have talent,” Grandma had told him proudly, admiring his work. And that felt really good.
Suddenly,Chris knew what he had to do.He dropped his sandwich on the plate and rushed to the phone.“Hi,Grandma, it's Chris.I need your help.”

C. He was the first to win the championship.
D. He won the squash championship in 1985.

B. It is a relaxing sport for all ages.

D. It fits in with the needs of modern life.
7. What is the key factor leading to the success of Jahangir Khan
A. His strong build.
B. His strong will.
C. His family's support.
D. His talent in sports.

A Change of lifestyle.

Chris looked at the clock again. Only five more minutes before school let out.
Just now,his Creative Learning teacher, Mrs. Griswell asked them to be prepared to share their favorite hobby with the class on Friday. And they were supposed to bring samples for show.
