Ma Huateng, chairman and CEO of Tencent

Syria’s 12-year-old table tennis athlete Hend Zaza will come to China for professional training, China Central Television (CCTV) said in a report on Tuesday. The young athlete just finished her first trip to the Olympic Games after losing a match in Tokyo. On hearing that Syria’s 12-year-old table tennis athlete Hend Zaza wishes to come to China for training, the Chinese Olympic Committee immediately invited her, helping to fulfill her wishes, she will arrive in September.
“I’m looking forward to training abroad. I want to make progress and take the championship one day,” Zaza told CCTV. “I want to reach the same level as the Chinese team does, and I’m looking forward to having the same training as the Chinese team.”
On July 24, the young Zaza lost her match to Chinese-Austrian athlete Liu Jia 4-0. The night before her match, she was a lag bearer of Syria at the opening ceremony. A late night, plus the lingering six-hour jet lag, meant that she barely slept — not great preparation against Liu, who is making her sixth Olympic appearance.
“I was hoping for a winning match and for better play, but it’s a tough opponent so it’s a good lesson for me, especially with the first Olympics,” Zaza said. “I will work on it to get a better result next time, hopefully.”
Still, with her long hair bouncing as she did around the table, Zaza showed ability that impressed her seasoned opponent. “I had to remind myself not to underestimate her,” Liu said. She called Zaza “a great talent” with good rhythm and instincts who simply needed more experience.
In 2011, complaints about high unemployment and corruption led to severe violence inside Syria. As the violence rapidly escalated (升级), the country descended into a civil war that still rages today. Zaza said as long as she can remember she found it difficult to go to school or play outside, let alone train for her chosen sport. At 12 years and 204 days, Zaza became the youngest table tennis player ever to compete in the Olympics.
Zaza has previously told media that Chinese world champion table tennis athlete Ding Ning is her idol and she hoped that she could play with Ding Ning one day. Ding once posted on Weibo in 2020 that she was looking forward to meeting Zaza in China soon.
With a desire for world peace, Zaza said that participating in the Olympics is not her final goal. She hopes that the small white ball in her hands can deliver a message of peace. She also hopes that Syria will stop the war as soon as possible, and every child will be able to chase their dreams freely.
4. Why did the Chinese Olympic Committee invite Zaza to China
A. To help Zaza accomplish her dream.
B To improve Chinese team’s pingpong techniques.
C. To show that China is a greater country than hers.
D. To spark her love for pingpong.
5. What led to Zaza’s not that satisfying performance
a. Lack of confidence b. Jet lag c. Not enough sleep d. Competitive rival (对手)
A. abc B. acd C. bcd D. abcd
6. What kind of person is Zaza
A. Ambitious but lazy. B. Dishonest but grateful.
C. Honorable and humorous. D. Competent and respectable.
7. What might be the best title for the passage
A. Syrian Table Tennis Player Invited to China
B. Zaza’s Wish for Peace
C. Table Tennis Diplomacy (外交)
D A Harmonious World Connected by Table Tennis

China’s population decline may be much faster than expected, with the number of people in the country halving within the next 45 years, a new study has warned. The prediction was based on the official birth rate of 1.3 children per woman last year- well below the figure of 2 needed to keep the number stable-and forecast a much more dramatic decline than previous estimates. China’s current population is over 1.4 billion and in 2019 the United Nations estimated that China would still have around 1.3 billion people by 2065.
Another estimate published in The Lancet by researchers with the University of Washington last year suggested the Chinese population would halve by 2100. But the new research, from Professor, Jiang Quanbao and colleagues with the institute for population and development studies at Xian Jiaotong University, warned that the country’s population decline may have been severely underestimated. The UNs projection, for instance, was based on the assumption that China's fertility rate would remain at above 1.7 children per woman. China had 12 million newborns last year, 25 percent lower than the UN’s estimate.
The Chinese authorities “need to pay close attention to the potential negative inertia of population growth and make a plan in advance,” wrote Jiang in the study published in the Journal of Xian University of Finance and Economics. The new birth rate, though unexpectedly low, was based on data from the latest census, which is believed to be the most accurate yet because it was collected entirely with the aid of digital devices for the first time and cross-checked with other government data sets. Though the census findings have only partially been disclosed to the public, the limited information already shed a new light on changes and future development trends in the Chinese population, according to the researchers.
The pandemic may have had an impact on childbirth last year- but Jiang and his colleagues said the chances that the birth rate would rebound were low. They said it was more likely that the total population would soon start a rapid decline due to the drop in the number of women of child-bearing age. “If the fertility rate drops to 1, in 29 years the population in our country will fall by half,” they said. According to the new census data, children make up about 17 per cent of the population, while the proportion of over-60s rose to over 18 per cent. The researchers said it was the first time that China had more seniors than young people.
12. Which word can replace “decline”
A. Increase B. Decrease C. Improve D. Focus
13. Which of the following statements is true about the latest census
A. The findings are inaccurate.
B. The census is independent of other government data sets.
C Everybody can have easy access to the full contents.
D. Digital devices played an important role in conducting the latest census.
14. What is Jiang’s attitude towards the future of China’s population
A. Positive B. Indifferent C. Concerned D. Optimistic
15. What is the main idea of the passage
A. China faces serious population problems.
B. China’s population problems are being overestimated.
C. Women in China report low fertility desire.
D. Polices are being carried out to encourage fertility desire.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze. I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked U ncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

The latest artificial intelligence technologies and their applications aimed at making people’s lives smarter and better are displayed at this year’s event. Chinese tech giants, including Huawei, Tencent and Baidu, are showing how AI can help with urban digitalization (数字化) transformation. Let’s take a look at what they say at the exhibition.
Ma Huateng, chairman and CEO of Tencent
A plan to explore the stars will be jointly released by Tencent and the National Astronomical Observatories, said Ma. AI technology is expected to be used in exploration of the universe, after having been applied in medical treatment, urban governance and contactless service in the past year and facilitating people’s lives, according to Ma.
Li Yanhong, chairman and CEO of Baidu Inc
Artificial intelligence will influence the development of human society in the next 40 years, said Li Yanhong, chairman and CEO of Baidu Inc.
B. To improve Chinese team’s pingpong techniques.
C. To show that China is a greater country than hers.
D. To spark her love for pingpong.
5. What led to Zaza’s not that satisfying performance
a. Lack of confidence b. Jet lag c. Not enough sleep d. Competitive rival (对手)
A. abc B. acd C. bcd D. abcd
6. What kind of person is Zaza
A. Ambitious but lazy. B. Dishonest but grateful.
C. Honorable and humorous. D. Competent and respectable.
7. What might be the best title for the passage
A. Syrian Table Tennis Player Invited to China
B. Zaza’s Wish for Peace
C. Table Tennis Diplomacy (外交)
D. A Harmonious World Connected by Table Tennis
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. A

C. Everybody can have easy access to the full contents.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整故事。

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Dad and I found it was so cute that we decided to chase it. After a while, we were completely lost in the forest. There was nothing left in our sight but the trees. “We may not be able to make it back to the farm house in time for supper.” I thought to myself. After a series of fruitless attempts to find a way out, we felt hungry and tired.
Paragraph 2:
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. We got stuck in the forest. And an unexpected shower added to the difficulty of us in finding a way home, for all the tracks we had made disappeared because of the rain. I was almost on the edge of breaking down when my father said, “Don’t worry, my son. I remember there is a river near the farm house. Find the river and we will be back home.” Finally, we found the river and got back to the house along it. Needless to say, we ate a late dinner.
