Mr. Peter Johnson, aged twenty-three, battled for half an hour to escape from his trapped car yesterday when it landed upside down in three feet of water. Mr. Johnson took the only escape route—through the boot(行李箱).
Mr. Johnson’s car had finished up in a ditch(沟渠) at Romney Marsin, Kent after skidding on ice and hitting a bank. “Fortunately, the water began to come in only slowly,” Mr. Johnson said. “I couldn’t force the doors because they were jammed against the walls of the ditch and dared not open the windows because I knew water would come flooding in.”
Mr. Johnson, a sweet salesman of Sitting Home, Kent, first tried to attract the attention of other motorists by sounding the horn and hammering on the roof and boot. Then he began his struggle to escape.
Later he said, “It was really a half penny that saved my life. It was the only coin I had in my pocket and I used it to unscrew the back seat to get into the boot. I hammered desperately with a hammer trying to make someone hear, but no help came.”
It took ten minutes to unscrew the seat, and a further five minutes to clear the sweet samples from the boot. Then Mr. Johnson found a wrench(扳子) and began to work on the boot lock. Fifteen minutes passed by. “It was the only chance I had. Finally it gave, but as soon as I moved the boot lid, the water and mud poured in. I forced the lid down into the mud and scrambled clear as the car filled up.”
His hands and arms cut and bruised(擦伤), Mr. Johnson got to Beckett Farm nearby, where he was looked after by the farmer’s wife, Mrs. Lucy Bates. Huddled in a blanket, he said, “That thirty minutes seemed like hours.” Only the tips of the car wheels were visible, police said last night. The vehicle had sunk into two feet of mud at the bottom of the ditch.

C
No one knows for sure when advertising first started. It is possible that it grew out of the discovery that some people did certain kinds of work better than others did them. That led to the concept of specialization, which means that people would specialize, or focus, on doing one specific job.
Let's take a man we'll call Mr. Fielder, for example. He did everything connected with farming. He planted seeds, tended the fields, and harvested and sold his crops. At the same time, he did many other jobs on the farm. However, he didn't make the bricks for his house, cut his trees into boards, make the plows, or any of the other hundreds of things a farm needs. Instead, he got them from people who specialized in doing each of those things.
Suppose there was another man we shall call Mr. Plowright. Using what he knew about farming and working with iron, Mr. Plowright invented a plow that made farming easier. Mr. Plowright did not really like farming himself and wanted to specialize in making really good plows. Perhaps, he thought, other farmers will trade what they grow for one of my plows.
How did Mr. Plowright let people know what he was doing Why he advertised, of course. First he opened a shop and then he put up a sign outside the shop to attract customers. That sign may have been no more than a plow carved into a piece of wood and a simple arrow pointing to the shop door. It was probably all the information people needed to find Mr. Plowright and his really good plows.
Many historians believe that the first outdoor signs were used about five thousand years ago. Even before most people could read, they understood such signs. Shopkeepers would carve into stone, clay, or wood symbols for the products they had for sale.
A medium, in advertising talk, is the way you communicate your message. You might say that the first medium used in advertising was signs with symbols. The second medium was audio, or sound, although that term is not used exactly in the way we use it today. Originally, just the human voice and maybe some kind of simple instrument, such as a bell, were used to get people's attention.
A crier, in the historical sense, is not someone who weeps easily. It is someone, probably a man, with a voice loud enough to be heard over the other noises of a city. In ancient Egypt, shopkeepers might hire such a person to spread the news about their products. Often this earliest form of advertising involved a newly arrived ship loaded with goods. Perhaps the crier described the goods, explained where they came from, and praised their quality. His job was, in other words, not too different from a TV or radio commercial in today's world.
9. What probably led to the start of advertising
A. The discovery of iron. B. The specialization of labor.
C. The appearance of new jobs. D. The development of farming techniques.
10. The writer makes up the two stories of Mr. Fielder and Mr. Plowright in order to________.
A. explain the origin of advertising B. predict the future of advertising
C. expose problems in advertising D. provide suggestions for advertising
11. In ancient Egypt, a crier was probably someone who ________.
A. owned a ship B. had the loudest voice
C. ran a shop selling goods to farmers D. functioned like today's TV or radio commercial
B 10. A 11. D

根据第一段“No one knows for sure when advertising first started. It is possible that it grew out of the discovery that some people did certain kinds of work better than others did them. That led to the concept of specialization, which means that people would specialize, or focus, on doing one specific job.(没有人确切地知道广告是何时开始的。它可能源于发现某些人做某些工作比其他人做得更好。这导致了专业化的概念,这意味着人们会专业化,或专注于做一项特定的工作)”可知,劳动的专业化可能促进了广告的产生,故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。在倒数第三段“Many historians believe that the first outdoor signs were used about five thousand years ago. Even before most people could read, they understood such signs. Shopkeepers would carve into stone, clay, or wood symbols for the products they had for sale.(许多历史学家认为,最早的户外标志大约是在5000年前使用的。甚至在大多数人识字之前,他们就能理解这些符号。店主会在石头、粘土或木头上雕刻他们出售的产品的符号)”可推知,作者讲这两个故事是为了说明广告的起源,故选A。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“In ancient Egypt, shopkeepers might hire such a person to spread the news about their products. Often this earliest form of advertising involved a newly arrived ship loaded with goods. Perhaps the crier described the goods, explained where they came from, and praised their quality. His job was, in other words, not too different from a TV or radio commercial in today's world.(在古埃及,店主可能会雇佣这样的人来传播他们产品的消息。通常,这种最早的广告形式涉及到一艘满载货物的新到达的船。也许叫卖者描述了货物,说明了它们的来源,并赞扬了它们的质量。换句话说,他的工作与当今世界的电视或广播广告并无太大不同)”可知,在古埃及,一个叫卖的小贩的功能类似于今天的电视或广播中的商业广告,故选D。
D
If you are a fruit grower — or would like to become one — take advantage of Apple Day to see what’s around. It’s called Apple Day but in practice it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.
Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try, as is the knobbly(多疙瘩的) Cat’s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else.
There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.
At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.
Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园). If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.
12. What can people do at the apple events
A. Attend experts’ lectures.
B. Visit fruit-loving families.
C. Plant fruit trees in an orchard.
D. Taste many kinds of apples.
13. What can we learn about Decio
A. It is a new variety.
B. It has a strange look.
C. It is rarely seen now.
D. It has a special taste.
14. What does the underlined phrase “a pipe dream” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. A practical idea.
B. A vain hope.
C. A brilliant plan.
D. A selfish desire.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To show how to grow apples.
B. To introduce an apple festival.
C. To help people select apples.
D. To promote apple research.
D 13. C 14. B 15. B

One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it可知,Orleans Reinette是最好吃的苹果品种之一,但它的种植条件非常苛刻,所以喜爱它的人想经常吃到它是徒劳的愿望,故选B。

考查定语从句,分析句子结构可知,“ that was born in 1880 and died in 1968”为定语从句,修饰先行词Helen Keller。 故将that改为who。
one of… “……

故将as改成like。
故将his改成her。
set a good example to sb. “为某人树立好的榜样”,故在sets后面加a。
10.考查副词。句意:她为我们树立了良好的榜样,她的故事鼓励许多人勇敢地面对困难。分析句子结构可知,“勇敢地”是用来修饰动词face,所以要用副词形式。故将brave改成bravely。

I'm very happy to have received your last letter. As the world is becoming a global village, English is getting more and more important, so mastering English means we can see the world through a new window.
During the month in high school, we have many activities where we can practice our English, such as learning textbooks, reading English newspapers, English Speech contest and so on. My English is just OK but the two main problems in my study are that I feel it difficult to learn words by heart, and that I often feel nervous when speaking English.
I really hope that my English teacher can give me good advice on how to memorize new words. Another advice is to give us more chances to practice speaking. I believe we can make much progress in English with the teacher’s help.
Yours,
Li Hua

Mr. Peter Johnson aged twenty-three, battled for half an hour to escape from his trapped car yesterday when it landed upside down in three feet of water.

How did Mr. Plowright let people know what he was doing Why, he advertised, of course.
