Songkran, Thailand
This festival marks the Thai New Year, which is celebrated in the second week of April. This is the hottest time of the year in Thailand, so it makes sense that the biggest Songkran tradition is to throw water on people. Thais of all ages join in water fights, using buckets, hoses (软管)and water guns to celebrate the event.
Boryeong Mud Festival, South Korea
Don't expect to come home clean after experiencing the Boryeong Mud Festival in South Korea. Famous for its mineral-rich mudflats, visitors rush to Boryeong in July to make themselves in mud, swim in grey pools and enjoy the party. There are even mudslides and a mud skiing competition for those who are seeking the extreme mud adventure!
La Tomatina Spain
The festival dates back to a parade in which some naughty teenagers knocked one performer off his stilts (高跷)and caused a fight of throwing vegetables accidentally. It was once banned until 1957 when the locals held a protest with a funeral. They carried a coffin containing a huge tomato as bands played a funeral march. In the following decades, La Tomatina has become a popular event. If you join the event, be aware that you squash (压扁) the tomato before throwing it. Have a great time but avoid causing any injury.
Dia de los Muertos, Mexico
Beginning at the midnight of October 31 and lasting through November 2, it is a festival when families gather together to remember those loved ones who have died, aiming to help them on their spiritual journey. On these days, Mexican families prepare special tables in their homes. On top of them they'll put photos of the dead and their favorite food. They also visit the graves of their beloved ones to show their respect to the dead.
1. If you want to experience a special new year in a country, you can choose to visit ________.

I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library.
My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old .It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.
As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaning in my life. I had several children and books were our main source(来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.
I always read ,using different voices ,as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it !It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books .
Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on form generation to generation.
As a novelist, I’ve found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can’t afford to purchase a book. I see libraries as a safe haven(避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy(盗版行为) and 1 think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. Share library announcements on your social media. Frequent them and talk about them when you can.
4. Which word best describes the author’s relationship with books as a child

As aging population gets bigger and dementia (老年痴呆症) more common, more families are struggling with a complex question: How do you support a loved one with dementia, especially when you have a full-time job and several kids
Reg Urbanowski may have an answer to this pressing issue: ROBOTS.
He and his team managed to develop a new type of robots named TP robots. Looking like stand-up vacuum cleaners attached to an iPad, they can be activated remotely via a smartphone and guided remotely by a controller app similar to the way a mouse is used on a desktop computer. All possess audio and visual communication capabilities, allowing the operator to be “in the room” to interact with Mom or Dad.
He believes that caregivers and family members can use a TP robot to “look in” on people with mild dementia. He says, “TP robots provide an effective solution for minimizing caregiver burden, especially for those who have career or other out-of home activities.”
Urbanowski and his team have conducted a study that involves providing TP robots for 15 Manitoba families. These robots are programmed to provide reminders of necessary daily routine like turning off the gas, taking medicine and having dinner. They will also help ensure patients are getting the exercise they need to maintain their health and well-being.
Erin Crawford, Program Director with the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, says she has faith that TP robots will prove beneficial, particularly when it comes to reminding people with dementia to do certain things at certain times. “It means that family members that can’t be there, for whatever reason, know that those things are till happening,” she says.
8. What can we infer about TP robots from Paragraph 3
A. It’s easy to operate. B. It can clean the room.
C. It's convenient to carry. D. It can be used on a computer.
9. How will TP robots help those with dementia
A. By having dinner with them. B. By turning off the gas for them.
C. By doing activities with them. D. By reminding them to take pills.
10. What’s Erin Crawford’s attitude to the future of TP robots
A. Optimistic. B. Cautious. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
11. What is the main idea of the text
A. TP robots provide a new solution to dementia.
B. TP robots help to take care of dementia patients.
C. Caregivers of dementia will be replaced by TP robots.
D. Urbanowski and his team are developing a new robot.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. A 11. B

D
You run into the grocery store to quickly pick up your item. You grab what you need and head to the front of the store. After quickly sizing up the check-out lines, you choose the one that looks fastest. You chose wrong. People getting in other lines long after you have already checked out and headed to the parking lot. Why does this seem to always happen to you
Well, as it turns out, it's just math that is working against you. A grocery store tries to have enough employees at the checkout lines to get all their customers through with minimum delay. But sometimes, like on a Sunday afternoon, they get super busy. Because most grocery stores don't have the physical space to add more checkout lines, their system becomes overburdened. Some small interruption — a price check, a particularly talkative customer — will have downstream effects, holding up the entire line behind them.
If there are three lines at the store, these delays will happen randomly at different registers (收银台). Think about the probability. The chances of your line being that fastest one are only one in three, which means you have a two-thirds chance of not being in the fastest line. So it's not just in your mind: Another line is probably moving faster than yours.
Now, mathematicians have come up with a good solution, which they call queuing theory, to this problem: Just make all customers stand in one long snaking line, called a serpentine line, and serve each person at the front with the next available register. With three registers, this method is about three times faster on average than the more traditional approach. This is what they do at most banks, Trader Joe's, and some fast-food places. With a serpentine line, a long delay at one register won't unfairly punish the people who lined up behind it. Instead, it will slow everyone down a little bit.
12. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph
A. Queuing in a line. B. A shopping experience.
C. A rush in the morning. D. Cutting in a line.
13. According to the article, what may cause delays in checking out
A. The lack of employees in the grocery store.
B. Some unexpected delays of certain customers.
C. The increasing items bought by customers.
D. A worsening shopping system of the store.
14. What is the solution given by mathematicians
A. Employing more workers for checking out.
B. Limiting the number of queuing people.
C. Making only one line available.
D. Always standing in the same line.
15. What's the principle behind the queuing theory
A. To pursue the maximum benefit.
B. To leave success or failure to luck.
C. To avoid the minimum loss.
D. To spread the risk equally among everyone.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D
【解析】
【分析】本文是说明文。文章说明了杂货店排队方式以及研究人员提出的蛇形队伍的新方式,并分析了各自的利弊。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“ou run into the grocery store to quickly pick up your item. You grab what you need and head to the front of the store. After quickly sizing up the check-out lines, you choose the one that looks fastest. You chose wrong. People getting in other lines long after you have already checked out and headed to the parking lot. Why does this seem to always happen to you (你跑到杂货店去买东西。拿上你需要的东西,到商店前面去。快速排队结账之后,你选择看起来最快的那条。你选错了。人们在你已经结完账并前往停车场之后,还在排队等候。为什么这种事总是发生在你身上?)”可知,第一段描述了在商店购物排队结账的现象。故选A。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“But sometimes, like on a Sunday afternoon, they get super busy. Because most grocery stores don't have the physical space to add more checkout lines, their system becomes overburdened. Some small interruption — a price check, a particularly talkative customer — will have downstream effects, holding up the entire line behind them. (但有时候,比如周日下午,他们会超级忙。因为大多数杂货店没有足够的空间来增加更多的结账队伍,他们的系统变得负担过重。一些小的干扰——价格检查,一个特别健谈的客户——会产生顺流效应,使整条队伍停滞不前)”可知,某些客户的意外延误可能会导致结账时队伍的停滞不前。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Now, mathematicians have come up with a good solution, which they call queuing theory, to this problem: Just make all customers stand in one long snaking line, called a serpentine line, and serve each person at the front with the next available register.(现在,数学家们想出了一个很好的解决方案,他们称之为排队论,来解决这个问题:让所有的顾客排成一条长长的蛇形队伍,叫做蛇形队伍”,为前面的每个人提供下一个可用的收银机)”可知,数学家们提出的解决方案是让人们排一条蛇形的队伍来进行结账。选项C与文意相符,故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“With a serpentine line, a long delay at one register won't unfairly punish the people who lined up behind it. Instead, it will slow everyone down a little bit. (如果排成蛇形队伍,在一个收银台耽搁很长时间,也不会对排在队伍后面的人造成不公平的惩罚。相反,这会让每个人都慢下来)”可推知,蛇形队伍的排队方式会让每个人都享受公平,即把风险平均分配给每个人。故选D。

A. Cooperative. B. Uneasy. C. Inseparable. D. Casual.
5. What does the underlined phrase “an added meaning” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Pleasure from working in the library.
B. Joy of reading passed on in the family.
C. Wonderment from acting out the stories.
D. A closer bond developed with the readers.
6. What does the author call on other writers to do
A. Sponsor book fairs. B. Write for social media.
C. Support libraries. D. Purchase her novels.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Reading: A Source of Knowledge

Looking like stand-up vacuum cleaners attached to an iPad they can be activated remotely via a smartphone and guided remotely by a controller app similar to the way a mouse is used on a desktop computer.
10 What’s Erin Crawford’s attitude to the future of TP robots
A. Optimistic. B. Cautious. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
11. What is the main idea of the text
A. TP robots provide a new solution to dementia.
B. TP robots help to take care of dementia patients.
C. Caregivers of dementia will be replaced by TP robots.
D. Urbanowski and his team are developing a new robot.

C To avoid the minimum loss.
D To spread the risk equally among everyone.
