A terrible thing happened to me while I was watching TV recently: I realized that I had aged. Now of course I know that I am aging, it’s just that I hadn’t realized quite how old I was until I saw a participant who I recognized on a reality TV show. Well, I didn’t recognize her but I recognized her name, I’d slightly known her in my 20s when she’d been the celebrity who had stolen my roommates’ boyfriends.
However, here’s the thing that shocked me—I hadn’t recognized her because rather than the beauty I remembered, on my TV was a middle-aged mum cooking. And then it hit me: that’s what I look like too.
It’s a particularly cruel change of nature that we can’t see ourselves as others do. We see our own face so often that the wrinkles that start to cut through it just go unnoticed. Occasionally we might get a rude awakening when suddenly our bodies stop working as expected but, for the most part, we’re left to get on with growing old without too many reminders. But when you get a reminder...oof! Since that show aired, I have sat in front of the mirror analyzing my face and wondering how I came to look so like my mother without noticing. I’ve also realized that my waist no longer fits into baby fat but a middle-aged spread.
I also fear that I don’t know what middle age looks like for my generation. Did my mother still feel 24 when in reality she was 15 years older And why do I not feel like I’m where I should be as I approach 40 I definitely remember writing a list of things I will have achieved by the time I’m 40 at 19. Where is the house in the South of France or the Porsche 911 she so desperately wanted
Since then, I’ve started to redefine myself. I don’t want to put everything down to age but I can’t quite stop myself. Tired again Must be my age. Thank God then for social media. All around me I see amazing women at the other end of their 40s. They’ve accepted their age and seem to love it, so I’m hopeful that as I move into the next decade that will be me too. And maybe I’ll get the Porsche before I’m 50.
24.What is implied in Paragraph 1
A.The author has been friends with the TV celebrity.
B.The TV celebrity used to be popular among boys.
C.The TV celebrity now lives a life of extreme luxury.
D.The aging process doesn’t affect the TV celebrity.
25.In most cases, how do we perceive the aging process
A.We clearly know what happens. B.It is very likely to slip our mind.
C.We can accept it quite peacefully. D.It always brings about hopelessness.
26.The underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refers to ________.
A.a lady denying being old B.the ambitious self aged 19
C.a woman accepting her age D.the celebrity on the TV show
27.What is the theme of this article
A.It matters not how long we live but how.
B.Wrinkles are just evidence of great wisdom.
C.Age is a very high price to pay for maturity.
D.The best tunes are played on the oldest violins.
C
A competition making up Versailles literature was launched on Sina Weibo recently. So what is Versailles literature
Actually, the term has nothing to do with the French palace nor with literature. It came from The Rose of Versailles, a comic series which was about aristocratic life at the palace of Versailles in France in the late 18th century, and was coined by a Chinese influencer earlier this year. Known as humblebragging, it is a boast disguised as a complaint. "I have too many houses. How can I decide which one to decorate " and "I thought I lost weight this morning. So disappointed when I realized it was because I took off the huge diamond ring my boyfriend gave me last night" are some examples of Versailles literature. The intention is to show off-usually things of materialistic values, yet one ought to pretend that's not the point.
As the 19th century English author Jane Austen famously wrote, "Nothing is more deceitful than the appearance of humility." The psychology behind humblebragging is to be recognized for one's successes and be liked by others at the same time, according to scholars. In her article titled Why do people hate humblebragging published in Psychology Today, psychologist Dr Susan Krauss Whitbourne at the University of Massachusetts Amherst noted that humblebragging is a "strategy in pursuit of respect" because it draws attention to one's accomplishments in a circuitous way.
However, studies on social media users show that humblebragging as a self-promotion strategy does not work. In the essay Humblebragging: A distinct and ineffective self-presentation strategy, the University of North Carolina research Ovul Sezer and Harvard University scholars Francesca Gino and Michael Norton concluded from their research that humblebraggers are perceived more negatively than straight braggers due to the former's insincerity. "The critical factor differentiating the two groups of people is sincerity. People don't like braggers, but they at least see them as more sincere than humblebraggers," said Francesca Gino.
So, how can we annoy humblebraggers back "Just pretend you don't get whatever it is they try to show off," a netizen advised." And respond with genuine sympathy for their complaints."
28.Which of the following statements is typical of "Versailles literature"
A.I've got a new haircut, which I think is funny.
B.Got five offers to date. I'm at a loss which to choose.
C.It's a headache how to make my son tidy up his room regularly.
D.I'm fed up with living in the countryside with no shopping malls around.
29.What is the psychology behind humblebragging
A.To win others' sympathy. B.To mask his/her complaint.
C.To show his/her sincerity. D.To earn others' admiration.
30.What does the underlined world "circuitous" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Roundabout. B.Straightforward. C.Ambiguous. D.Double-edged.
31.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Humblebraggers are relatively more sincere than braggers.
B.Humblebragging is a genuine appearance of being humble.
C.To respond with real sympathy will discourage humblebraggers.
D.To be perceived positively, try using bragging rather than Versailles literature.
D
All it takes is three continuous nights of sleep loss to cause your mental and physical well-being to greatly worsen.
A new study looked at the consequences of sleeping fewer than six hours for eight nights on end — the minimum duration of sleep that is necessary to support best health in average adults.
Lead author Soomi Lee, assistant professor at the University of South Florida, found the biggest jump in symptoms appeared after just one night of sleep loss. The number of mental and physical problems steadily got worse, peaking on day three. At that point, research shows the human body got relatively used to repeated sleep loss. But that all changed on day six, when participants reported that the severity of physical symptoms was at its worst.
“Many of us think that we can pay our sleep debt on weekends and be more productive on weekdays.” Lee said. “However, results from this study show that having just one night of sleep loss can significantly weaken your daily functioning.”
Data provided by the Midlife in the United Study included nearly 2000 middle-aged adults who were relatively healthy and well-educated. Among them 42% had at least one night of sleep loss, sleeping 1.5 fewer hours than their typical routines.
They recorded their mental and physical behaviors in a diary for eight days in a row, allowing researchers to review how sleep loss causes wear and tear on the body. Participants reported a pile-up of angry, nervous, lonely, bad-tempered and frustrated feelings as a result of sleep loss. They also experienced more physical symptoms, such as upper respiratory issues, aches, gastrointestinal (肠胃的) problems and other health concerns.
These negative feelings and symptoms were continuously sharpened throughout continuous sleep loss days and didn't return to baseline levels unless they had a night sleep of more than six hours.
Lee says the best way to maintain a strong daily performance is to set aside more than six hours to sleep every night.
32.When did participants have the worst physical symptoms
A.On day 1. B.On day 3.
C.On day 6. D.On day 8.
33.What does the fourth paragraph suggest
A.We can make up for sleep loss on weekends.
B.We can improve our efficiency if we sleep enough on weekends.
C.Even one night of sleep loss can affect our daily performance.
D.It doesn't matter if we don't get enough sleep occasionally.
34.How can we solve the problems caused by sleep loss
A.By setting aside over 5 hours each night.
B.By reducing negative feelings and symptoms.
C.By doing exercise and listening to music.
D.By sparing over 6 hours to sleep each night.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.The concept of sleep loss. B.The consequences of sleep loss.
C.The methods of avoiding sleep loss. D.The causes of sleep loss.

“We work four-day weeks because it makes our staff more motivated,” says Joe Munns, CEO and founder of Bakedin, which makes home baking kits and cake mixes.
Joe has put his 40 workers on a four-day week since he started the firm in 2013, when he was working for the computer giant IBM. 36. When he was at IBM, he actually reduced his hours down to a four-day week and had Fridays free, when he could work on Bakedin, which became his second job and he was devoted to.
37. It means that he could do what he liked and took that opportunity to start the business with a four-day week. So they have the normal working week of Monday to Thursday—then everyone gets those three days off.
Because there is still some business to do on Fridays, such as dealing with customer enquiries, some of Bakedin's office workers volunteer to work on Fridays.38.
Bakedin staff put in nine-and-a-half-hours on the four days they are at work.39.“When we are together, we just find that we’re more productive. We get more done this way, because we don’t get that tired, Friday feeling.”
Many firms and countries. have started experimenting with four-day, rather than five-day weeks.40. Bakedin is in the food industry, which has a very high turn-over rate for staff. “Every year, some 30% of employees in the food industry leave their jobs,” says Joe. “But at Bakedin, our staff turnover rate is under 5%. So a four-day week is an excellent way of keeping staff loyal.”
A.He figured it was his business.
B.He ran the company as a weekend passion.
C.There are other benefits of putting staff on a four-day week.
D.It is a big selling point when they first advertise for workers.
E.They take their third day off at some other point in the week.
F.They get more done this way than if they were at work five days a week
G.It reduces the risk of staff “burning out” and improves their work-life balance.

M: This coming Friday, that is to say, the day after tomorrow.
(Text 3)
W: I heard a new public library is going to be put up near here.
M: Well, I think it’s too much to expect when our town is so poor.
(Text 4)
W: Why are you looking so upset, Tim

M: Oh, good. Thank you very much.
(Text 6)
W: When can I collect my computer You know, I brought my computer here two weeks ago.
M: I’m sorry. We’re still repairing it.

(Text 10)
M: Do you know when and how bicycles began Well, in the eighteenth century, cities became larger and larger. And people moved from the countryside and small towns to the cities because there was more work for them to do in the cities. On Sundays and holidays, they liked to leave the cities and have a good time in the countryside. But not every family had a horse. So people needed a simpler means of transportation, and inventors in many countries tried to solve this problem.
Therefore, the first bicycle, which was very simple, appeared in 1790 in France. People called it “the horse on wheels”, but it was difficult to ride and it also felt uncomfortable. Then in 1861, after many improvements being made, bicycles became a practical means of transportation. And people liked bicycles, because they were not as expensive as horses, and better still, they didn’t need to be fed. However, they could go anywhere and were easy to ride.

第二节
Dear Bob,
I am more than delighted to write to you. knowing you are an expert in English learning, I have some problems to trouble you now .
English is so difficult that I almost want to give it up. In class I can't follow my teacher because of the poor listening. Also, I can't remember the words clearly. Although I spend much time on it, I can't use words to convey my meanings. What's worse, when I read English, I am often trapped in the unknown words. It prevents me from understanding the main idea. I dare not take part in the group discussion for fear that I will make stupid mistakes. So my result is not good.
I would appreciate it if you give me some practical methods of learning English.
Yours
Li Hua
