I was the oldest of three children. Mom got my wardrobe (行头) from neighborhood mothers. Imagine the fun other kids had when they saw me wearing their used clothing.
Perhaps my biggest challenge came from Charlie. As far as I was concerned,Charlie’s main fun was to make fun of me. During those years, I slowly learned to hate. I hated Charlie, but I also hated myself for not being able to change my situation.
But situations do change. After high school, I joined the Navy and then received a college education. Hard work and a few lucky career (职业) choices finally lifted me into the middle class.
One beautiful summer afternoon, my friend and I celebrated Friday in Jackson’s Steak House. For the first time in almost twenty years, I saw Charlie. Not only did I see him, but he spoke to me. I could tell he didn’t recognize me, but I surely recognized my childhood tormentor (摧残者). He said, “Sir, what kind of dressing would you like with your salad ”
The tables had turned. Charlie was calling me “Sir.” While hundreds of improper ideas raced through my mind, I could only give a two-word reply: “Blue cheese.” As much as I wanted to taste the sweet taste of revenge (复仇), I refused to do it. I wouldn’t put another person through what I had gone through as a child. It was time to put childish things behind me and make use of the new opportunity that life had given me. I left him a good tip and I didn’t say one word about recognizing him.

A children-raising game called “Chinese Parents” has gained popularity among Chinese players recently with its real-life setting and realistic plots. Released on September 29, this online game has received over 13,000 comments on Tencent WeGame and Steam, two popular gaming platforms in China, in less than a month, according to data from the two platforms.
Players are responsible for raising their fictitious (虚构的)children online. During the lifetime of these children, they must make choices for them just like Chinese parents do in real life, such as choosing extra-curricular classes, deciding their majors in universities, and even finding marriage partners for them. A “child’s” physical condition, IQ level, and imagination can be improved by attending courses arranged by the player “parents” in each round of the game.
“From the game, I learned that ongoing efforts can bring about great changes to our lives,” Shoubin, a 28-year-old in the city of Zibo in east China’s Shandong Province said. “I can understand my parents more, and show my appreciation for the hardships they have overcome for raising and training me.”
Social issues about Chinese parents, families, and education of children tend to cause heated discussions. “I integrated(融入) these ideas into the game, creating a sense of ‘rebirth’ for players and driving them to experience a virtual child-rearing life through entertainment,” said Yang Geyilang, the game producer.
Some negative comments were also made by the game players.“This game is somewhat controversial,” a player named Producer Kahn commented, highlighting that although exams are important, we cannot regard the scores as the only standard to judge a child, which has become a routine for many Chinese families.
5.Why is the game so popular
A.Because the game can help players change life.
B.Because the setting and plots are real to life.
C.Because of the popular gaming platforms, Tencent WeGame and Steam.
D.Because the game received many comments in a short time.
由第一段第一句 “...has gained popularity among Chinese players recently with its real-life setting and realistic plots.”
6.How do players play the game
A.Organize classes for player “parents”.
B.Make vital choices like selecting their “children” majors.
C.Raising their own “children” in the virtual world.
D.Experience the joy of changing lives.
7.What’s the author’s attitude to this game
A.Objective. B.Subjective.
C.Favorable. D.Negative.
【解析】选A。
8.What does the passage mainly tell us
A.Players are given an opportunity to re-experience life.
B.Chinese games can also hit popular gaming platforms.
C.A game leads to new parent-teen relationship in China.
D.Chinese players test parental skills in the virtual world.

Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur(创业者),who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy.By the time she was 13,her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids’ teeth, instead of destroying them.
It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad.On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning,“Why can’t I make a healthy candy that’s good for my teeth so that my parents can’t say no to it ” With that in mind,Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.
With her dad’s permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly.She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning.Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.
Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground.Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore’s product—CanCandy.
As CanCandy’s success grows,so does Moore’s credibility as a young entrepreneur.Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she’s also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.
Meanwhile, with her parents’ help,Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life.Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn’t driven primarily by profit.Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilieCandy’s profits to Big Smiles. With her talent and determination,it appears that the sky could be the limit for Alice Moore.

I started to work as an editor for a travel magazine.I didn’t really mind the work, but I wanted something more challenging. My sister sent me some details for a position in a start-up.The job was a seemingly perfect mix of my skills and interests,so I jumped at it.
However, soon after I joined the company, its model changed to focus on K-12 education, and everything about my position changed.I was asked to take on the completely different roles of selling contents to teachers and training people.I had no experience in sales, training or education. On top of that,I’m an introvert (内向的人).I felt more a little outside my comfort zone.
I knew I wanted to grow as an individual and make a serious impact on the company.I told myself that everything feels overwhelming at first and I should at least try.In a way,I felt like I didn’t have a choice.I knew jumping out of the nest was the right thing for me,even though it felt pretty awful.
I was fortunate to be surrounded by very helpful people, both at work and at home.My boss never asked if I thought I could do it;she asked if I was interested in trying.
I spent hours researching my company’s products.I asked lots of questions and spoke to so many teachers that there were soon more good experiences than difficult ones.I looked for opportunities to put in extra effort. The more I did,the better I felt.
Over time,I discovered that the job was something I could do and liked doing. It was incredibly rewarding to see the company grow.I also learned it’s important to take risks and accept new opportunities, even when you’re not sure if you’ll do well.I don’t think there’s anything worse than failing to try.I’m so glad I tried, and it surely paid off.

I am a part of the Windward Robotics team known as the Omnicats, one of the many clubs offered at my school. My eight teammates and I started out by watching the robotics qualifiers and finals of Chinese teams. We used these robotics videos for inspiration and drew up mind maps of what our team wanted to do.
We meet everyday for two hours after school in order to build our robots.Typically, adults oversee what students are building, but my school lets teens take control. It leaves room for more errors, but we’re prouder of our final product.
Before our first real match,a practice one was offered at the actual site.My sub-team had been further along than other teams but quickly fell behind. When we arrived on that big day,I immediately felt my teammates’ tension. Our first match was in three minutes. All of us glanced around at each other since we were not prepared at all.Our robot was still sitting in a box.Two of our teammates rushed to take the robot for an official examination as the rest of us discussed our strategy.
Our team captain explained that we all should try driving the robot now, while it was early in the season. She gave me the remote.I had only driven for a limited amount of time in practice so I was extremely nervous. Our autonomous code(自动代码) began to run almost immediately after our short discussion.Despite all the drama,we ended up winning the match. Not too bad for the first match! I was so proud.I did not enjoy the pressure of driving but liked building the robot behind the scenes instead.
We have transferred to a different type of robotics at the end of the semester, which involves the whole team designing one giant robot with large tools.I am a part of the electrical team now,so I make sure the motherboard(母板) can supply the robot’s energy needs. We have all enjoyed the rest of the season and learned that robotics is never dull!
