Ask people to name the world's tallest peak and anybody with sound general knowledge will name Mount Qomolangma. But quiz them on its exact height and many will hesitate. Recently, a team of over 30 Chinese surveyors left the base camp at Mount Qomolangma for a higher spot on its journey to the peak on Wednesday as part of the country's mission to remeasure the height of the world's highest mountain.
The remeasurement of the peak's height is a part of China's latest large-scale scientific survey of Qomolangma. Preparation of the project was started in early March, with 53 surveyors from the First Geodetic Surveying Brigade (大地测量旅) getting stationed near Qomolangma to carry out adaptive climbing and training in other technical skills, and they are going to the survey on the top of the mountain.
To ensure the accuracy of the measurement, and to work it in a more scientific way, experts from the Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping, the Shaanxi Bureau of Surveying, and the China Geological Survey were invited to assist in the technical design and planning of the project from the beginning.
The technical innovation and breakthrough applied in the latest survey include the application of the BeiDou-3 Navigation Satellite System and advanced domestic surveying and mapping instruments.
The Chinese government has conducted six large-scale surveys and measurements on Qomolangma in the past few decades; it had successfully measured and announced the height of the mountain in 1975 and 2005. Chinese mountaineers and researchers climbed Mount Qomolangma in 1975 to determine its height and concluded that the rock height of the peak was about 8,848.13 meters; in 2005, the summit measured 8,844.43 meters. Scientists at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) will analyze (分析) whether the increasing frequency of dust storms is the result of climate (气候) change.
Dust storms have killed 120 people and they have raised questions about the possible reasons behind the rise of storms and now IMD is looking into them.
The weather is changing and rising levels in temperature are thought to be the reason behind it. This March temperature levels have been higher than past years and Delhi-based Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC) recorded temperature levels of almost 7 degrees higher than usual.
“This year dust storms have become more serious and their frequency has increased compared to last year. Dust storms are forecast for most of the days this week and the one following it. Dust storms usually happen during March - May and that period remains the same,” said Dr K Sathi Devi, head of the National Weather Forecasting Centre (NWFC), which monitors (监测) the temperature rise.
According to the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), dust storms are expected to increase in the coming years with global (全球的) warming. “With the rise in global temperature the soil is going to become drier. So, more soil will be carried away by the wind. With both the intensity (强度) of the wind and dryness of the soil increasing, the intensity of dust storms is going to further increase in the future,” said Chandra Bhushan, deputy director of CSE.
Scientists at the NWFC are expected to carry out analyses of the influence of global warming on the seriousness of dust storms. “There have not been many studies done by Indian scientists that connect climate change with dust storms. It needs to be analyzed with data dating back 30 - 40 years in India,” said Devi.
28. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Climate change.
B. The rise of dust storms.
C. The weather in India.
D. The temperature in March.
29. Devi’s words in Paragraph 4 are centered on _____.
A. the frequency of dust storms
B. the causes of dust storms
C. the damage of dust storms
D. the cycle of dust storms
30. What does Chandra Bhushan want to say in Paragraph 5
A. World temperature will rise further.
B. Dust storms will affect people’s life.
C. Global warming will worsen dust storms.
D. More work should be done to protect soil.
31. What does Devi think of India’s studies mentioned in the last paragraph
A. They need to be furthered.
B. They make little difference.
C. They lead to the creation of a database.
D. They set a good example for other scientists.

In just over a decade, China National Space Administration (CNSA) has sent a host of spacecraft to the Moon as part of the Chang’e program. In late 2007, China launched its first Moon-exploring spacecraft, Chang’e-1. By 2009, the lunar orbiter had completed its primary goal of mapping the surface to look for landing sites for future landers. In 2010, another orbiter named Chang’e-2 followed, and accomplished a similar set of objectives.
In 2013, CNSA launched Chang’e-3, which was their first attempt to land a spacecraft on the lunar surface. By the end of the year, Chang’e-3 had done just that, making China the third country to make a soft landing on the Moon.
Chang’e-3 achieved another milestone when it deployed(部署)a rover named Yutu on the moon’s surface. The rover encountered operational difficulties toward the end of the second lunar day after surviving and recovering from the first 14-day lunar night. It was unable to move after the end of the second lunar night, though it continued to gather useful information for some months afterward. Thanks to its ability to visually analyze the lunar surface, Yutu helped researchers discover a new type of volcanic rock that is rich in a black mineral called ilmenite.
With a lander and rover designed much like Chang’e-3, the Chang’e-4 mission launched in December 2018 and arrived at the Moon just a few days into 2019. “According to the measurements of Chang’e-4, the temperature of the shallow layer of the lunar soil on the far side of the Moon is lower than the data obtained by the U.S. Apollo mission on the near side of the Moon,” said Zhang He, executive director of the Chang’e-4 mission. “That’s probably due to the difference in lunar soil composition between the two sides of the Moon,” she said.
The Chang’e-4 lander also came equipped with a mini-biosphere(微型生物圈)experiment. Within just a few days of landing, Chang’e-4 returned an image of a container that showed its cotton seeds had sprouted(发芽). They continued to grow for about a week, but eventually gave in to the freezing temperatures, dying as lunar day turned to night.
On December 17, 2020, Chang’e-5 returned to Earth loaded with a sample of the lunar surface for the first time in decades. Then China will move on to Chang’e-6, and 7, and…
32. What might be a mission of Chang’e-2
A. Placing Yutu on the Moon.

D. It had difficulty recovering from the first lunar night.
34. Which of the following is a discovery of Chang’e-4
A. Cotton could survive the lunar night.
B. Cotton could grow well on the far side of the Moon.
C. The moon’s soil temperature varies between its two sides.
D. The moon’s soil composition varies between its two sides.

On December 16, 2008, Randy Heiss was hiking in Patagonis, a town near the US-Mexico border when he noticed there was a red balloon. He walked towards it, and found the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami”, it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss turned the paper over. It was a numbered list, all in Spanish.
Heiss suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned his letters, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one. It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. Based on the blowing wind, he was pretty sure that’s where it came from.
Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They found that Dayami had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes and art supplies. Heiss then posted about his search on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family, but with no success. Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2008, he sent a private message to Radio XENY, a radio station in Nogales.
The next morning, Heiss got a message from Radio XENY: They had located Dayami, an eight-year-old girl whose parents were killed in a car accident. They would arrange a get-together with Dayami at the radio station. So they bought just about everything on Dayami’s list.
Paragraph 1:
Then the Heisses drove for 45 minutes, crossing the border into Nogales.

Dear Lily,
I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling sad now. I'd like to offer you some advice.
First of all, I recommend that you find a chance to have a face-to-face talk with your mother, which will help you two understand each other. Secondly, you’d better try your best to work hard and balance your lessons and physical health, and in that case your mother will have confidence in you. Thirdly, tell your mother that you have grown up and can deal with some things on your own and advise her not to be concerned about you. In addition, it’s a good idea to tell her that you are eager to be independent and eager for more freedom.
Hope my suggestions will be helpful to you.
