How intelligent can a computer be May be you can get the answer after reading the following passage about a newly-developed US computer program called Smarter Child and the Internet.
If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid’s huge memory. It can recite many facts. For example, Smarter Child knows every baseball player in every team this season.
He knows every word in the dictionary and the weather in every major city areas across the US. However, if you ask Smarter Child other questions, you get strange answers. A question about Smarter Child’s age returns, “One year, 11 days, 16 hours, 7 minutes, and 47 seconds!” Asking where he lives, “In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.”

Another problem is that while Smarter Child can deal with information more exactly and faster than any human, he lacks(缺少) common sense—a basic grounding of knowledge that is obvious(明显的) to any young child.

This may sound like a joke about a lazy person's dream job. Earn big money by staying in bed and watching TV. But this is really happening, and it's a project of NASA and two European space agencies: the Institute of Aerospace Medicine at the Cologne-based German Aerospace Center and the European Space Agency. It's called Artificial Gravity Bed Rest Study, aimed at studying how the body adapts to weightlessness in space.
Scientists are seeking 12 women to spend two full months in bed in the fall at a German lab, plus an additional month there for preparation and recovery. The first 12 test subjects, all men, already have started the study
Participants spend two entire months in bed and remain lying down even to do everyday things like eating, drinking and exercising. They also answer nature's call and shower, but it's unclear from the NASA website how those tasks are accomplished in bed.
“Daily routine showering, getting dressed, eating, exercising takes much time when you cannot stand up to do them," says the website, adding that there is "continuous data collection", including blood pressure, heart rate, nutrient absorption and also the participants' feelings. Study subjects will spend the 60 days with their heads tilted down six degrees, which imitates conditions in space.
Participants are encouraged to pass the time by watching TV, taking online courses, reading and any other activities they can perform while lying down alone in bed to relieve what could, be boredom. Family and friends are allowed to visit.
The-high $18,500 payment for two months of lazing about is probably a major motivation for people willing to go through something this extreme. However, if you' re an American who really needs the money, you probably can't afford it. Candidates need to travel to Cologne four times at their own expense for the employment process between April and July. Plus, they need strong German-speaking skills. Also participants need to be nonsmokers between ages 24 and 55, in good health, with normal body weight.
4. What are participants expected to do during the study
A. Report their feelings regularly B. Complete their daily routines in bed.
C. Keep their bodies tilted down six degrees D. Record their physical responses every day.
5. What data about the participants will the researchers collect
A. Their physical and mental reactions B. Their behaviors to weightlessness.
C. The ways they do their daily things. D. The changes in their weight.
6. What will be a challenge for the participants
A. The language skills they need. B. The difficulty meeting family.
C. The possibility that they feel dull. D. The slow recovery of their health.
7. The requirements for potential participants are_________.
A. challenging for Americans B. tailored to thin persons
C. easy for the youth to satisfy D. suitable for most people

When I was 3 years old, I was found to be deaf in my left ear and have a small problem in my right. Being hard of hearing has been difficult, but I've never lived in a state of self-hating sorrow.
Imagine being able to shut out all sounds as you lay your head down to sleep by simply rolling over onto one side. That's my reality when I sleep on my "good ear", and it even makes me feel like a superhero sometimes
People call my deaf side my "bad ear", but when I wear my hearing aid, I have access to a range of features that some other deaf people don't
In cinemas, for example, with one click of a button I can enjoy a whole film as though it were whispered to me from the mouths of the actors.
Having a hearing aid hasn't always felt good, however.
On the first day I got my aid, when I was 8, I took it to school for show-and-tell. As I explained how it worked to my classmates, a boy yelled out, "Aren't those for old men "
At that moment, I felt different. It took a long time for me to get over that sense of being so unlike my peers.
But it's not just those kids who can make us deaf and hard-of-hearing people feel like burdens.
Every video on social media that lacks subtitles, for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it.
Completely deaf people are excluded from enjoying many movies too, as subtitles in cinemas are almost impossible to find.
And with hearing aids costing around $2,500 each, it can be hard for many people to afford to be able to listen to the things that others take for granted.
As for me, I can listen to music, enjoy films, and catch conversations—I'm lucky.
I'm deaf, but I can still hear everything. I've been blessed with wonderful life experiences.
8. Deaf people may have the following burdens EXCEPT___________.
A. being unable to afford hearing aids B. being unable to enjoy videos without subtitles
C. being embarrassed in front of their peers D. being blessed with wonderful experiences
9. What does the underline phrase "are excluded from" probably mean
A. are prevented from B. are limited to
C. are separated from D. are reduced to
10. What is the author's attitude toward his hearing difficulty
A. It was a tough reality and caused him a lot of trouble
B. It was a time of great sorrow and made him feel sad.
C. It gave him a chance to experience something special.
D. It helped him to live in his own world without sound.

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station where the forester worked.
Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel—no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Steve inside.

C
C It gave him a chance to experience something special.
D. It helped him to live in his own world without sound.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C
【解析】
【分析】本文为记叙文。作者天生有听力障碍,但是他从来没有生活在一种自我憎恨的悲伤中,反而感觉这给了他不一样的美好人生。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第七段“At that moment, I felt different. It took a long time for me to get over that sense of being so unlike my peers.(那一刻,我感觉不一样了。我花了很长时间才克服了和同龄人不一样的感觉)”;第九段“Every video on social media that lacks subtitles, for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it.(例如,社交媒体上每一段没有字幕的视频,就意味着所有的聋人都无法欣赏它)”以及倒数第三段“And with hearing aids costing around $2,500 each, it can be hard for many people to afford to be able to listen to the things that others take for granted.(而每台助听器的价格在2500元左右,对于很多人来说,很难负担得起能够听懂别人认为理所当然的东西)”可知,聋人的负担有:买不起助听器、无法欣赏没有字幕的视频以及在同伴面前感到尴尬,除了D选项“拥有美好的经历”文章没有提到是聋人的负担。故选D。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第五段中“Every video on social media that lacks subtitles, for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it.(例如,社交媒体上每一个没有字幕的视频,就意味着所有的聋人都无法欣赏它)”再结合划线词所在句Completely deaf people are excluded from enjoying many movies too, as subtitles in cinemas are almost impossible to find.可知,完全失聪的人也……欣赏很多电影,因为在电影院几乎找不到字幕。由此可推知,are excluded from意为“不能,被……排除在外”。A. are prevented from被阻止;B. are limited to被限制到;C. are separated from被分开;D. are reduced to被减少到。故选A。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“I’m deaf, but I can still hear everything. I’ve been blessed with wonderful life experiences.(我耳聋了,但我仍然能听到一切。我有幸拥有美好的人生经历)”可知,作者认为自己的听力障碍给了他体验特别的东西的机会。故选C。

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Without any thought of endangering myself, I rushed into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt. Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our cellphones. Even Steve was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sitting in the cold air and wondering how to get out of the forest.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A jeep appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents. Steve and I had many more camping adventures from then on, but it was on this trip that Steve began to treat me more like a friend and equal, rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day.
