I’ve been a volunteer in the Macmillan@Glasgow Libraries programme for just over a year. I got involved because I was looking for something to volunteer for after I retired from work. I thought being a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Volunteer might be a good way to do that by using some of the skills I learned at work.
At one time, I felt I made a real difference when a lady come to use the service. She was very upset, but she was not the person with cancer. It was her partner. She had lots of things on her mind. We, together with a counselor, had a chat about her to help deal with all the emotions she felt. We knew we could arrange something, so we discussed with her what could be done for her family. She was relieved that we could get something arranged for her and liked the fact that we managed to get the ball rolling during her visit.
The good thing about having the services in the library is that the environment is non-clinical and therefore more relaxing than the hospital or doctor’s surgery. The team in the library are not medically trained. That means we do not use big words or medical terms very often.
It’s great that the people who volunteer all work well together, helping each other to get a solution for people who come in. It’s good to have to team at the other end of the phone whenever we get something unusual. It is a pleasure to be able to help as a volunteer.
4. What can we infer about the author
A. He is a retired doctor.
B. He is volunteering in a hospital.
C. He is a counselor in cancer.

A. Because she was affected by cancer.
B. Because her husband suffered from cancer.
C. Because she didn’t know how to treat cancer.
D. Because she had a poor relation with her husband.
6. What do we know about the volunteers
A. They do well in teamwork. B. They receive medical training.
C. They all waited to be helped. D. They often meet unusual things.
7. Why does the author write this text
A. To call on readers to do voluntary work.
B. To show us how to help those in trouble.
C. To share his experiences as a volunteer.
D. To teach us how to take care of cancer patients.

It is becoming more and more important for researchers to closely observe our sea life, with climate change and overfishing damaging our oceans. However, this is almost impossible since human presence scares the animals.
Now, thanks to The Soft Robotic Fish, also called SoFi, researchers may not only be able to keep a close eye on the creatures, but also uncover undersea secrets that have been confusing us for centuries. Though not the first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) created to observe the oceans, SoFi solves many of the problems that have hindered (妨碍) the usefulness of previous robots.
AUVs traditionally have had to be tied to a boat because radio communications do not work well underwater. To solve the problem, CSAIL director Daniela Rus and her team used sound waves which can travel greater distances, allowing drivers using a waterproofed Super Nintendo controller to guide SoFi from up to 50 feet away. To ensure SoFi can freely move around, a controller fitted with a battery powers the robot through the ocean.
During test dives, SoFi moved alongside the sea life at depths of 50 feet for up to 40 minutes at a time, taking high-quality photos and videos. Even more importantly, it was able to do so without causing some noises. The researchers say sometimes the fish would swim alongside the strange-looking robot-fish out of curiosity, while at other times they appeared completely unaware of its existence.
While SoFi currently only records videos, future versions will include sensors. “For us, this fish is magical,” says Rus. “We imagine someday it might help us uncover more mysteries from the amazing underwater world that we know so little about.”
12. The first paragraph is used to ________.
A. attract readers’ attention B. provide background information
C. call on people to stop overfishing D. show human influence on sea animals
13. What drives SoFi to move underwater
A. A solar battery B. Sound waves
C. A special controller D. A robot
14. What words may be used to describe SoFi
A. Multi-functional and emotional. B. Scary-looking but sensitive.
C. Fast-moving and disturbing. D. Silent-running and magical.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Rus has a magical fish. B. SoFi should be improved.
C. Rus has designed sensors for SoFi. D. We know little about the SoFi.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. B

Six “sacrificial pits (祭祀坑)”, dating back 3,200 to 4,000 years, were newly discovered in Sanxingdui Ruins site in Guanghan, Southwest China’s Sichuan province. Over 500 artifacts, including gold masks, bronze wares, ivories, jades, and textiles, were unearthed from the site.
Sanxingdui site, first found in 1929, is generally considered as one of the most important archaeological(考古) sites along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. However, the work of excavation on the site only began in 1986, when two pits — widely believed for sacrificial ceremonies — were accidentally discovered.
Investigation in the area around No. 1 and 2 pits was relaunched in October 2019, and No. 3 pit was found in December 2019, according to Lei Yu, a researcher of Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute who heads the ongoing excavation. Thirty-four research universities and research institutes have cooperated in this project. He said the new discoveries will help to better understand many unexplained findings in 1986.
More excavation followed in March 2020, and five more pits were found last year. And detailed research began in October. Excavation capsules with hi-tech equipment were set up in the pits in order to prevent the site from further damage.
Sanxingdui site covers an area of 12 square kilometers, and its core zone of an ancient city covers nearly 4 square kilometers. According to the National Cultural Heritage Administration, studies of Sanxingdui site will become a crucial project in an ongoing program Archaeology China, which tries to explain the origins of Chinese civilization and how diverse cultures communicate and come together.

It is becoming more and more important for researchers to closely observe our sea life, with climate change and overfishing damaging our oceans. However, this is almost impossible since human presence scares the animals.
Now thanks to The Soft Robotic Fish, also called SoFi, researchers may not only be able to keep a close eye on the creatures, but also uncover undersea secrets that have been confusing us for centuries.
Sound waves

14. What words may be used to describe SoFi
A. Multi-functional and emotional. B. Scary-looking but sensitive.
C. Fast-moving and disturbing. D. Silent-running and magical.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Rus has a magical fish. B. SoFi should be improved.
C. Rus has designed sensors for SoFi. D. We know little about the SoFi.
