I started the second term of Grade 10 on February 1,1978. On February 2, when I woke up to go to school, my mother didn’t. She had passed away in her sleep during the night. After we laid my mother to rest, I went back to school, but I didn’t care much to be there at all.
Since it was a new term, my teachers didn’t know me very well. My English teacher, Mr. Goldberg, would ask the class questions and call on people to answer. When he called on me, he’d pretty much be waking me up from wherever my mind would be. I’d say, “Excuse me What was that ” He’d ask me again, and I’d have the correct answer.
One day, he asked me to meet him after class. “I am confused about what’s going on,” he said. “You always seem lost. Your mind is always someplace else during class, but obviously, you know all the answers.”
I told him the reason why I came to school every day was that my mother made me. Now that she wasn’t here, I didn’t really feel the need to go anymore.
Then he said, “Well, just do me a favor. I want you to meet me in my office during sixth period.” So I met him, just to talk. Afterwards, he said, “Meet me tomorrow, same time.” This went on and on, every single day. He had me meet him during his preparation period. I would help him grade papers, and we would talk.
When open-school night came, I went with my sister, who had just graduated from the same school, because I had no one else to go with. My social studies teacher wouldn’t talk to her, because he thought it was some kind of trick. Mr. Goldberg happened to be outside the room, so he came in and said, “Wait a minute! Talk to her. I’ll explain later.”
In fact, Mr. Goldberg went around to all my classes and talked to all my teachers. He said, “If you have any issue with Maxie Jones, come to me.”
The next year, he did the same thing. I met with him every day, and he talked to all my teachers about whatever was going on with me. Again, he told them, “If you’ve got any problem with Maxie, come and talk to me.” By the time I graduated from high school, I had never been truant for a single day.
At my graduation, Mr. Goldberg told me, “This feels funny. I teach tenth graders, not seniors, so I never come to the graduation.”
“Well, why are you here ” I asked.
He replied, “Because I wouldn’t miss seeing you graduate for anything in the world.”
It took me years before I realized what he had done. I graduated from high school in the top 15 percent of my class. I had a scholarship and a full ride to college. The truth is, I was always academically capable of that. But at 15 - having lost my mother and not really seeing the value of education - I was in line to quit high school. I realized that the reason why I showed up to school every single day was that somebody there was expecting to see me. That somebody was Mr. Goldberg.
24. What difficulty did Maxie meet at the beginning of the new term
A. He had few friends at school.
B. He didn’t rest well at home.
C. He lost his mother.
D. He didn’t understand the class well.
25. Which words could best describe “me” at the start of the new term
A. Sad and emotional.
B. Curious and talkative.
C. Lazy but confident.
D. Smart but unmotivated.
26. What does the underlined word “truant” probably mean
A. Absent.
B. Excellent.
C. Careless.
D. Bored.
27. According to the passage, what most contributed to “my” academic success
A. Loss of my mother.
B. Company of my sister.
C Strict requirement of my school.
D. Persistent help from my teacher.
C 25. D 26. A 27. D
根据第一段“I started the second term of Grade 10 on February 1,1978. On February 2, when I woke up to go to school, my mother didn’t. She had passed away in her sleep during the night.(1978年2月1日,我开始了10年级的第二个学期。2月2日,当我醒来要去上学时,我妈妈没有醒。她是在夜里睡觉时去世的。) ”可知,高中生活的第二天,Maxie失去了母亲。故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段““Excuse me What was that ” He’d ask me again, and I’d have the correct answer.(“对不起 那是什么 ”他会再问我一遍,然后我就知道正确答案了。)”和第三段“I am confused about what’s going on,” he said. “You always seem lost. Your mind is always someplace else during class, but obviously, you know all the answers.(“我对正在发生的事情感到困惑,”他说。“你似乎总是走神。上课的时候,你的思维总是在别的地方,但显然,你知道所有的答案。”)”说明作者聪明“wise”。根据第四段“I told him the reason why I came to school every day was that my mother made me. Now that she wasn’t here, I didn’t really feel the need to go anymore.(我告诉他我每天来学校的原因是我妈妈逼我来的。既然她不在这里,我真的觉得没有必要再去了。)”说明作者现在学习缺乏动力,即“unmotivated ”。故选D。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词的上句“I met with him every day, and he talked to all my teachers about whatever was going on with me.(我每天都和他见面,他和我所有的老师谈论我的事情。)”和“By the time I graduated from high school, I had never been truant for a single day.(到我高中毕业的时候,我从来没有逃学过一天。)”
根据最后一段“The truth is, I was always academically capable of that. But at 15 - having lost my mother and not really seeing the value of education - I was in line to quit high school. I realized that the reason why I showed up to school every single day was that somebody there was expecting to see me. That somebody was Mr. Goldberg.(事实上,我在学术上一直都有这样的能力。但在15岁的时候,我失去了母亲,并没有真正看到教育的价值,我准备从高中退学。我意识到我每天去学校的原因是那里有人期待见到我。那个人就是金伯格先生。)”可知,正是老师持续的帮助,才有作者的成功,故选D。
C
Last weekend I made a journey from New York to London, with my daughter to see my mother. To my relief, the travel was far easier than I expected: the airports were empty, the plane was half-full and the airline staff kindly provided food and wine, which I drank greedily with a straw while wearing the required face mask. What I did not expect was to be hit with a culture shock on arrival in London.
In New York, face masks are now an inseparable part of life. Street signs declare “OUTSIDE WITH NO MASK FORGET ABOUT IT!” Buildings carry more polite notices warning that anyone without a mask is banned. And even without them, almost everyone I see on the streets in my corner of Manhattan has their face covered. Strangers sometimes shout angrily at people who do not.
Indeed, there is such a strong sense of social pressure that in recent months I have worn a mask even when cycling alone, along Manhattan’s East river. And my daughter has taken to shopping online for “fashion masks”.
But not so in London. A new report issued by the Royal Society and the British Academy shows that, at the end of April, just 25 percent of Brits wore face masks in public places compared with 66 percent of Americans. We saw this for ourselves: in London, we appeared to be almost the only people wearing masks on the streets or in shops; even on public transport some seem to reject them.
Simon Roberts explains powerfully in a timely new book the Power of not Thinking. Habits matter deeply, but we rarely notice them — unless we travel. After a few days in London, I have started to “forget” my mask when I go outside. When I return to New York, I will have to relearn my habits all over again.
28. What does the underlined phrase “culture shock” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to
A. The loss of culture. B. Confusion and unfamiliarity.
C. The face mask. D. A huge welcome.
29. Which word best describes New Yorkers’ attitude towards mask wearing
A. Serious. B. Disapproving.
C. Annoyed. D. Ambitious
30. In terms of mask wearing, which is the difference between Londoners and New Yorkers
A. Londoners think mask wearing is only necessary on public transport.
B. None of the Londoners likes the idea of mask wearing.
C. New Yorkers should wear masks even if alone.
D. New Yorkers would react strongly to people without masks.
31 Why does the author mention the book the Power of not Thinking
A. To stress the importance of realizing one’s habits with environmental changes.
B. To help people understand that each country has its own unique culture.
C. To encourage people to travel and explore the world.
D. To explain why there’s a culture shock.
B 29. A 30. D 31. A

How to Find Your Inner Self
Figuring out who you are and your place in the world is a life-long task. ___36___ Once you realize that finding yourself is an ongoing process, not some sort of goal you must achieve, you’ll realize that you know much more about your inner self than you’ve ever imagined. Here are a few tips that can help you find your inner self.
Think about the moments you are most proud of in your life.
Finding meaning in your life is not easy, nor should it be, but you can get wonderful clues from your own past. ___37___, as they often give you the most meaning and purpose while working, traveling, or learning.
___38___.
As you reflect on things that made you proud, think about what these experiences reveal about your values. Try asking yourself, what values are connected with the things that make me feel proud
Determine the things you want in life.
Finding your inner self is as much about looking forward as looking back. Whether it is a job, a house in your favorite town, a loving partner, or lazy Sundays with a book, your desires reveal a lot about you. Simply write down the things you want in life.
Look beyond the labels(标签) given to you by others.
___39___ These labels are important to help define your roles and responsibilities in the world, but they are not you. They are just labels, and you are far more complex than a few words.
Remember that finding your inner self is a life-long process because you are always changing. Looking back on your life, note how often you were wrong about yourself. ___40___ Even if you’re sure about yourself now, this change will always happen as you move through life.
A. Recognize your values.
B. Make you proud.
C. But it doesn’t have to be frightening.
D. Think about what you want to achieve in your life,
E. Think about the things that brought your great pride in yourself,
F. How often did your likes, desires and goals change as you grew older
G. At any one time, you may be considered a daughter, a girlfriend, an employee, and a tennis player.
C 37. E 38. A 39. G 40. F
根据前一句“Figuring out who you are and your place in the world is a life-long task.(弄清楚你是谁以及你在世界上的位置是一个终身的任务。)”以及后面的句子“Once you realize that finding yourself is an ongoing process, not some sort of goal you must achieve, you’ll realize that you know much more about your inner self than you’ve ever imagined.(一旦你意识到发现自己是一个不断进行的过程,而不是你必须实现的某种目标,你就会意识到,你对内在自我的了解比你想象的要多得多。)” But it doesn’t have to be frightening.(但这并不一定是可怕的。)
第二段的小标题是“Think about the moments you are most proud of in your life.(想想你生命中最让你骄傲的时刻。)” Think about the things that brought your great pride in yourself(想想是什么让你为自己感到骄傲)中的brought your great pride与小标题中的you are most proud of相一致,且Think about the things与小标题的Think about the moments相一致,因此E选项呼应本段主题,符合语境,故选E。
空格处是本段的小标题,由“As you reflect on things that made you proud, think about what these experiences reveal about your values. Try asking yourself, what values are connected with the things that make me feel proud (当你回想那些让你骄傲的事情时,想想这些经历揭示了你的价值观。试着问问自己,什么价值观与让我感到自豪的事情有关 )”可知,本段主要讲的是要认识自己的价值观,A选项Recognize your values.(认识到你的价值观。)概括了本段主题,符合语境,故选A。
【39题详解】
后面的句子“These labels are important to help define your roles and responsibilities in the world, but they are not you. They are just labels, and you are far more complex than a few words.(这些标签对定义你在世界上的角色和责任很重要,但它们不是你。它们只是标签,你比几个单词要复杂得多。)”表明人在生活中有很多身份和责任,这些身份的定义很重要,“These labels”和G选项At any one time, you may be considered a daughter, a girlfriend, an employee, and a tennis player.(在任何时候,你都可能被认为是一个女儿,一个女朋友,一个雇员,一个网球运动员。)中的a daughter, a girlfriend, an employee, and a tennis player相呼应,此答案举例说明人可能有很多标签,因此G选项符合语境,在空格处起到启下的作用,故选G。
空格前说“Looking back on your life, note how often you were wrong about yourself.(回顾你的一生,注意你有多少次对自己的看法是错误的。)”,F选项How often did your likes, desires and goals change as you grew older (随着年龄的增长,你的喜好、愿望和目标会发生多少变化 )中的How often和上文的how often相一致,且change和前面的changing及后面的this change相呼应,因此F选项承上启下,符合语境,故选F。

Goldberg.

A. Serious. B. Disapproving.

30. In terms of mask wearing, which is the difference between Londoners and New Yorkers
A. Londoners think mask wearing is only necessary on public transport.
B None of the Londoners likes the idea of mask wearing.
C. New Yorkers should wear masks even if alone.
D. New Yorkers would react strongly to people without masks.
31. Why does the author mention the book the Power of not Thinking
A. To stress the importance of realizing one’s habits with environmental changes.
B. To help people understand that each country has its own unique culture.
C. To encourage people to travel and explore the world.
D. To explain why there’s a culture shock.
