Concrete is the world's most consumed material after water. Because it already surrounds us in the built environment, researchers have been exploring the idea of using concrete to store electricity—turning buildings into giant batteries. The idea has been gaining ground as we have come to increasingly rely on renewable energy from the wind and sun: rechargeable batteries are necessary when the breeze dies down or darkness falls.
Experimental concrete batteries have only managed to hold a small part of what a traditional battery does. But one team now reports in Buildings that it has developed a rechargeable original model that could represent a more than 900 percent increase in stored charge, compared with earlier attempts.
A live-in concrete battery might sound unlikely. Still, "you can make a battery out of a potato," notes Aimee Byrne. In a future where sustainability is key, she likes the idea of buildings that avoid waste by providing shelter and powering electronics.
Although the new design stores more than 10 times as much power as earlier attempts it still has a long way to go: 200 square meters of it "can provide about 8 percent of the daily electricity consumption" of a typical U.S. home, Zhang says.
This is not enough to compete with today's rechargeable devices. "We're getting milliamps (毫安) out of concrete batteries—we're not getting amps (安培), "Byrne says." We're getting hours as opposed to days of charge." But she adds that" concrete batteries are completely in their childhood, compared to other battery designs." The earliest batteries were simple and bulky. Researchers experimented with new materials and designs for more than a century to develop today's small devices. Byrne suggests concrete-based energy storage could undergo a similar evolution. "The whole idea is that we're looking far into the future," she says. "We're playing the long game with it."
4. What can we learn about the concrete batteries
A. They become increasingly renewable. B. They are the most consumed batteries.
C. They are being developed by researchers. D. They will replace energy from the wind and sun.
5. Why does Byrne mention a battery out of a potato
A. To show it is easy to build concrete batteries. B. To argue it is possible to develop concrete batteries.
C. To make her statement more interesting. D. To call on people to protect the environment.
6. What does the underlined word "bulky" in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Heavy B. Cheap C. Efficient D. Small
7. What does Byrne think of concrete batteries
A. They beat today's rechargeable devices. B. They are simple and bulky.
C. They have a doubtful future. D. They have a long way to go.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. D

【分析】本文是说明文。文章讲述了研究人员一直在探索使用混凝土储存电能的想法——将建筑变成巨大的电池了。
【详解】1. 细节理解题。根据第一段“researchers have been exploring the idea of using concrete to store electricity—turning buildings into giant batteries”(研究人员一直在探索使用混凝土储存电能的想法——将建筑变成巨大的电池)可知,研究人员正在探索利用混凝土来储存电能的可能性。故选C。
2. 推理判断题。根据第三段“A live-in concrete battery might sound unlikely. ”(混凝土电池可能听起来不太可能。)可知,根据常识人们认为我们所居住的建筑物成为蓄电池是不可能的,但科学家打了一个比方,土豆还能被做成电池呢。由此来论证混凝土建筑成为蓄电池不是没有可能的。故选B。
3. 词义猜测题。根据第五段“Researchers experimented with new materials and designs for more than a century to develop today's small devices. ”(研究者经过一个多世纪的研究新材料,才将电池做得那么小。)由此可知,原来的电池“简单且笨重”。“bulky”的意思是“重的”,与heavy同义。故选A。
4.细节理解题。根据第五段“Byrne suggests concrete-based energy storage could undergo a similar evolution. 'The whole idea is that we're looking far into the future,'... ”(伯恩认为,基于混凝土的能量存储也可能经历类似的演变。他说,我们的想法是着眼于遥远的未来,)可知,科学家Byrne认为混凝土蓄电池的未来值得期待,但仍需要很长的时间来研究。故选D。

Concerns about health, animals and the environment are leading more people to remove meat from their diet. Plant-based meat alternatives (替代品) increasingly appear in supermarkets and restaurants. But what some people call clean meat-meat grown from cells in a laboratory—is still an idea that is just beginning.
More than 24 companies are testing lab-grown fish, beef and chicken. These businesses hope to enter the alternative meat market, which could be worth $140 billion by 2029. One of the companies, Shiok Meats, grows its product by taking shrimp cells and keeping them at a fixed temperature. They are then given nutrients in a solution (溶液). The cells become meat in four to six weeks.
This lab-grown meat’s price is high. One kilogram of it now costs $5,000, said Shiok Meats’ chief executive Sandhya Sriram. At that cost, a single pork and shrimp dumpling could be as much as $300. Sriram, a vegetarian, hopes to cut the cost to $50 for one kilogram by the end of this year. “We are looking at next year, so we might be the first ever company to launch a cell-based meat product in the world,” Sriram said. “Shiok Meats still needs approval from the city’s food regulator, and that matters the most at present.”
Although people increasingly demand meat alternatives, cell-based meat companies still face resistance (抵制) to their products. In Singapore, some people said they would give lab grown meat a second thought. “I may not exactly dare to eat it, but I do find the idea appealing because the animals in the oceans are declining,” said 60-year-old Pet Loh, while she shopped for shrimps in a Singapore market.
Any alternative way of making animal protein without harming the environment is positive, said Paul Teng, a specialist in agriculture technology at Nanyang Technological University. But, he added, more studies are needed to understand any negative result of making cellular protein.
8. Why are more people eating less meat
A. Because lab-grown meat has more nutrition.
B. Because plant-based food is getting popular.
C. Because meat in the market is increasingly expensive.
D. Because health and the environment are their concerns.
9. What is the most important for Shiok Meats at present according to Sriram
A. Bringing down the price. B. Gaining consumers’ acceptance.
C. Obtaining official permission. D. Getting ahead of other companies.
10. Which word best describes Pet Loh’s attitude towards lab-grown meat
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring.
C. Negative. D. Positive.
11. What is the text mainly about
A A new way to make a fortune. B. Negative results of lab-grown meat.
C. New research findings on healthy diet. D. A meat alternative grown in labs.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. D

If Mars were the popular kid in school, Venus (金星)would be the unwelcome one sitting in the corner, largely ignored. Venus has nearly the same mass and size as Earth, but being closer to the sun, it gets nearly twice as much heat from the sun.
However, instead of having a climate that is just a warmer version of Earth’s, Venus's surface and atmosphere are unbearable: clouds of sulphuric acid blanket the planet, while at ground level, it is hot enough to melt lead. Despite this, there is now a sign that Venus may harbour life.
Jane Greaves at Cardiff University, UK, and her colleagues recently detected phosphine (磷化氢)in Venus's atmosphere, with one potential explanation that it is the by-product of biology. That is because the only way this gas is made on Earth is in laboratories or by microbes(微生物).Though this doesn't mean it was produced by life on Venus, attempts to find non — biological explanations for its presence have so far failed.
Our best way of confirming or rejecting the possibility of life on Venus is to go and have a proper look. While Mars has been the focus of interplanetary exploration efforts lately, the phosphine discovery lets people look at Venus in a new light. As NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted: "It's time to prioritize Venus.”
In the months and years to come, computer simulations will be used to further study the possible chemistries of the atmosphere on Venus. More laboratory experiments will be conducted to try to identify other ways the phosphine there could be produced. However, there is no guarantee that these efforts will reveal the true nature of this substance on Venus. A newly-proposed strategy is to directly sample the atmosphere and surface of Venus. By doing so, we would be able to take direct measurements of phosphine.
The discovery of phosphine in Venus's atmosphere is a great accomplishment. The scientific efforts may be just what we need to finally refocus on this neglected world. Possibly, the quiet kid in the corner may get the last laugh.
12. In theory, what's Venus expected to be like
A. It is almost as large as Earth.
B. It has nearly the same mass as Earth.
C. It has a warmer Earth-like climate.
D. It has the unbearable surface and atmosphere.
13. What can the discovery of phosphine on Venus indicate
A. There might exist signs of life.
B. This kind of gas is very common.
C. Many products can be made with it.
D. Experiments were once conducted there.
14. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The importance of observations.
B. The power of computer simulations.
C. The approaches to exploring phosphine.
D. The necessity to analyse phosphine.
15. Which can best describe the author's attitude to the exploration of Venus
A. Casual. B. Supportive. C. Cautious. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. B

Was it for a famous pop star, a beloved politician, or a I hero from the world of sport No, it was for Jean-Paul Sartre, the French existential philosopher and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. In the United States, this of mass public display of sadness and affection is usually reserved for pop stars.____16____
A culture can admire both the physical and intellectual (智力).The achievements of athletes inspire us to push the boundaries of what our bodies are capable of.____17____Both should make us try to be greater, stronger and smarter.
The problem is that when the average person sees an athlete perform an amazing feat(功绩), there is also the belief that they could do the same thing with enough training and practice. It seems to be within their grasp. Some people see intellectual feats, however, as beyond their understanding and therefore beyond their reach. Rather than struggle, they feel resentment (憎恨).____18____In the same way, intellectuals do not help their cause when they are dismissive (对……不屑一顾的) of pop culture and sports by dismissing popular achievements in those areas.____19____People are just more exposed to one or the other in their lives. Any attempt to use either as a means to imply superiority indicates lack of understanding of the purpose of culture. It is something that brings us close together by showing that we are all equal in our needs to love, be loved, and strive to be better tomorrow than we are today. We accomplish this by understanding that the elegant idea to a thinker is as inspiring as the slam dunk (灌篮) is to a sports fan. ____20____
A. Maybe it is time to rethink that priority.
B. Such anti-intellectualism leads to sickness, death and slows down society's progress.
C. Equally, we can be inspired by the insights of our poets, philosophers and the scientists.
D. We should have a healthy attitude toward experts because they are not always right.
E. That makes us all realize that we have unexploited physical potential.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150 左右。
It was a hot July day in Philadelphia. The five boys I was with had been sick of playing marbles and burning holes in dry leaves. So when little Ned suggested climbing the cliff, the rest of kids all agreed excitedly, except me. I hesitated. I longed to be brave and active, like them, but I’d been a sickly child most of my eight years and I actually wasn’t as strong as the other boys.
“Come on!”Called Jerry, my best friend. “Just being sick is no reason to be a coward(胆小鬼).” “I’m coming!” I yelled, and ran along after them. Through the park and into the woods we went, finally we stood beneath the near vertical(垂直的)wall of the cliff, about 60 feet high. To me it looked like the very symbol of the Forbidden and Impossible.
One by one, the other boys climbed upward, finding handholds and toeholds on rocks. I hung back until the others were partway up; then trembling and sweating, I began to climb. A hand here, a foot there, my heart pounding in my skinny chest, I made my way up and up. At some point, I looked back and was horrified. The ground at the base of the cliff seemed very far below; one slip and I would fall. But the boys were talking loudly and happily above me. In a few minutes they started up to the top while I still struggled and crawled, far behind.
“Hey, wait,” I begged. Sadly, they ignored my request and continued their way to the top, from where they would walk home by an easier route. Before they left, they glanced down at me. “You can stay if you want to”, teased Ned. Jerry looked concerned, but he went with the others.
I looked down and was overcome by dizziness; a nameless force seemed to be dragging me to fall off. I grasped the rock as the world spun around. I could never climb back down. It was much too far to go, too dangerous.
Paragraph 1:
However the way up to the top was even worse—higher, steeper, more challenging.

Paragraph 2:
I didn’t know how long it had passed until a familiar voice came below.

【答案】One possible version
However the way up to the top was even worse—higher, steeper, more challenging. I would never make it. I heard someone sobbing and moaning; I wondered who it was and realized that it was I. The other boys must have been home. Time dragged. And with each passing minute, my legs and arms grew sore/numb. Something rolled down my cheeks. It was tears or sweat, or both. The shadows gradually lengthened, the sun disappeared from the treetops beyond the clearing below, and dusk began to gather. The ground below the cliff became dim. Can you imagine how desperate I was at that time
I didn’t know how long it had passed until a familiar voice came below. I glanced down! It was my dad with a flashlight. But what could he do It was impossible for him to climb up here and carry me down. “Come on down, my brave boy. Dinner is ready.” His comforting tone seemed to have a magic power. Somehow, following his light, I struggled to inch over one step. And then another. That’s how it went. Finally I took the last step down onto the bottom and into my father’s strong arms, sobbing a little, and then, surprisingly, feeling a sense of immense accomplishment and something like pride.

Although the new design stores more than 10 times as much power as earlier attempts, it still has a long way to go: 200 square meters of it "can provide about 8 percent of the daily electricity consumption" of a typical U.S. home, Zhang says.
A To show it is easy to build concrete batteries.

Although people increasingly demand meat alternatives cell-based meat companies still face resistance (抵制) to their products.
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring.
C. Negative. D. Positive.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. A new way to make a fortune. B. Negative results of lab-grown meat.
C. New research findings on healthy diet. D. A meat alternative grown in labs.
