When I was a kid, I was the girl who kept the training wheels on my bike as long as possible. Even my younger sister had got rid of them much earlier than me. But as I began to grow older, this changed.
All this happened on the Bike Safety Day. It is supposed to be a fun day at school when all of us kids bring our bikes to school and the school provides us with the opportunity to ride outside and learn proper bike safety. Sounds like fun, right No. In fact, it caused me to panic. What was I going to say when my friends asked me about my training wheels
With the pressure of everyone seeing my training wheels, I determined to let them go. This was the first big change I’d ever made on my own.
I went to my parents and told them all about my dilemma. They were more than happy to help. We went outside and got my bike. Instead of running away and hiding behind, I stood in front of my bike and took great pride in my decision as my dad removed the training wheels.
I got on and steadied myself. My heart raced but my feet and hands were calm. My dad started to push before my feet even moved and suddenly I was off. The fear faded away and a relaxed mind came into its place. It was crazy to think how quickly I learned something that took so long for me to even try!
My confidence soared. This was going to be the start of a brand new world for me. My accomplishment would carry me forth to new goals and wins. I realized that if I set my mind to something, I could achieve it.
24. What does the school expect the students to do on Bike Safety Day
A. Have their bikes checked. B. Ride outside for fun.
C. Remove the training wheels. D. Acquire bike safety skills.
25. What does the underlined word "them'’(in Paragraph 3)refer to
A. The author's friends. B. The author's parents.
C. The training wheels. D. The safety problems.
26. What happened when the author finally rode without the training wheels
A. Everything turned out to be easy. B. She felt extremely embarrassed.
C. She ended up flat on the ground. D. Her sisters followed her example.
27. What does the author think is necessary for her to achieve a goal
A. Patience. B. Determination. C. Pressure. D. Concentration.

Every year, wildfires destroy millions of hectares of forest land, leaving many homes damaged and a lot of people homeless. Luckily, smoke jumpers help to stop this. They are brave guardians for us.
Smoke jumpers are a special type of firefighters. Unlike regular firefighters, they work in a different way. They jump from planes or are lowered by helicopters into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot, such as the middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
At a fire site, smoke jumpers first examine the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main goal is to stop a fire from spreading or to slow its progress until full, ground-based firefighters arrive. Using basic equipment such as shovels (铁锹) and axes, smoke jumpers clear land of burnable materials, like dry grass and dead trees. They carry water with them, too, but only a limited amount.
Although the majority of smoke jumpers are men, more women are joining now. The most important factors are your height and weight. Smoke jumpers employed in the United States for example, must be between 120 and 200 pounds (between 54 and 91 kilograms) so they don’t get blown away by the strong winds or get hurt when they land. Smoke jumpers must also be capable(有能力的) of surviving in the wilderness. In Russia, many smoke jumpers know how to find food in the forest and can even make simple furniture from trees so that they can survive in the wild(野外).
The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for these firefighters smoke jumping isn’t just an occupation(职业). They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires, and live in the forest. As 28-year-old Russian smoke jumper Alexi Tishin says, “This is the best job for tough guys.”
28. When a smoke jumper reaches a fire site, what is the first thing he or she does
A. Studying the land. B. Clearing the land.
C. Looking for water. D. Recording the accident.
29. What can be inferred about a smoke jumper according to the text
A. Smoke jumpers are paid more than regular firefighters.
B. Smoke jumpers must learn to survive in the wilderness(荒野).
C. Smoke jumpers appear as an occupation only in recent years.
D. Smoke jumpers play a more important role than regular firefighters.
30. What does the underlined word "tough" mean in the last paragraph
A. Healthy and talented. B. Caring and hardworking.
C. Strong and brave. D. Energetic and generous.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. The life of a Russian smoke jumper.
B. Why people become smoke jumpers.
C. Interesting facts about a new occupation.
D. Who smoke jumpers are and what they do.

Smart phones are greatly changing the way we walk down the street. Office workers and young people are walking like the old as they check emails and messages.
Scientists have found mobile phones make us walk more slowly, with modest steps, to avoid falling over. The leader of the study said the walk is just like someone in their eighties. Researchers found people writing a text message walk more than twice as slowly as those without a phone, finding it harder to stay in a straight line.
The scientists examined 252 people walking while reading a text message, writing one, speaking on their phones or without their phones at all. Writing a text is the hardest activity, causing people to look down at their phone 46 percent more, and 45 percent longer, than when reading a message. This led people to walk 118 per cent more slowly than when they were without their phones. People walked almost a third more slowly while reading a text and 19 per cent while talking on the phone.
Smart phones were found to stop people from walking in a straight line, putting them at greater risk of running into other people, cars or street lamps. This increased the need to slow down and take more careful steps.
John Timmis said the idea for this study came from following someone walking down the street in the afternoon, who was walking as if he had had several drinks. I thought it was a bit early for that, then walked up alongside him and saw that he was on his phone. Simply being on the phone changes the way people walk.
32. What does the underlined word “modest” mean in the second paragraph
A. Young. B. Straight. C. Low. D. Small.
33. Based on the text, who walk the most slowly
A. Those not carrying phones. B. Those writing a text message.
C. Those reading a text message. D. Those speaking on their phones.
34. What made people with phones take more careful steps
A. The need to walk straight.
B. The desire to use their phones.
C. The chance of possible accidents.
D. The traffic jams during rush hours.
35. What made John Timmis decide to do the research
A. Seeing office workers walking like the elderly.
B. Seeing people walking in the street hurriedly.
C. Watching young people who were walking normally.
D. watching a person who was walking in the street in a strange way .

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding-dong! Ding-dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without any thinking, my brother said, “No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books, which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents’ permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention(意图) to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into (硬闯) our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up (绑上)his hands but I tied in a special way so my brother could untie (解开) himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.
Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead. The doors were all locked from the outside and what’s worse, I did not have the keys.

I would appreciate it if you could offer me the chance to be a volunteer.
Yours faithfully,

One possible version:
Luckily, the man forgot to lock the kitchen window. Both my brother and I managed to get out of the house through the window with joy and we ran to the nearby police station, nervously but happily, where we asked them for help. The police bravely arrived at our house as soon as possible. And as a result, the man was caught, which made us very happy.
Just at the same time our parents came back home. The police asked my family to go to the police station. It was at there the police told us that the man was a wanted robber pretending to sell comic books and they had been looking for him for a long time. The police praised my brother and me for our braveness.Back home, I told my parents the whole story about the robbery with a mixture of excitement and happiness. They were thankful that we were not hurt but they scolded me for not stopping my brother from opening the door to strangers.I learned a lesson on safety and responsibility.
