I have a special place in my heart for libraries.I have for as long as I can remember.I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child.Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library.
My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old.It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.
As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaning in my life.I had several children and books were our main source(来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.
I always read, using different voices, as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it! It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books.
Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on from generation to generation.
As a novelist, I’ve found a new relationship with libraries.I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can’t afford to purchase a book.I see libraries as a safe haven(避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book.Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy(盗版行为) and I think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can.Encourage readers to use the library.Share library announcements on your social media.Frequent them and talk about them when you can.

A.Pleasure from working in the library.
B.Joy of reading passed on in the family.
C.Wonderment from acting out the stories.

“You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids’ lacrosse (长曲棍球) club.
I guess that there’s probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings.I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren’t even on...At this point the unwilling parent speaks up, “Alright.Yes, I’ll do it.”
I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts.Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season.Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.
Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社区) as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services provides a real joy.Volunteering just feels so good.
In that sense, I’m pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I’d freely like to admit. However, if others benefit in the process, and I get some reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies
1.What can we infer about the parent from her reply in Paragraph 1
A.She knows little about the club.
B.She isn’t good at sports.
C.She just doesn’t want to volunteer.
D.She’s unable to meet her schedule.
2.What does the underlined phrase“tug at the heartstrings”in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Encourage teamwork. B.Appeal to feelings.
C.Promote good deeds. D.Provide advice.
She may just need a little persuading.
3.What can we learn about the parent from Paragraph 3
A.She gets interested in lacrosse.
B.She is proud of her kids.
C.She’ll work for another season.
D.She becomes a good helper.
4.Why does the author like doing volunteer work
A.It gives her a sense of duty.
B.It makes her very happy.
C.It enables her to work hard.
D.It brings her material rewards.
That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community as you freely give your time, money, skills,or services provides a real joy.
冒号后的句子用来解释a deep understanding,其中动名词短语Connecting to the community是句子的主语,as引导状语从句。

In China, people travel by train to visit new places, go on business trips or go back to their hometowns during holidays. But in the US, travelling by train is a very old tradition. It wasn’t always that way, though.
The US railway system started to grow in 1826.Later, many railway companies started up and competed with each other to build new railway routes (路线).Trains became a symbol of progress, with New York City’s Grand Central Station becoming a major cultural landmark (地标).Musicians even created music works about trains. For example, Johnny Cash wrote a song called Folsom Prison Blues. But little by little, railways were replaced by highways as “car culture” took over the US.
China would go on to use trains even more widely than the US.China’s railway network connects the entire country. It allows people to travel fast with ease. For that reason, Chinese people like travelling by train. This is especially obvious during Chunyun, when China’s train stations are crowded with thousands of people who are trying to get home.
I had never travelled by train until I moved to China. My first trip by train was from Beijing to Tianjin by high-speed train. It was amazing how quickly I could get there just in half an hour.Since then, I’ve taken the train to lots of other cities—Shanghai, Chongqing and Shenzhen. It’s always a good time.People on the train tend to be friendly and happy to chat. And for some reason, even instant noodles taste better on the train than they do anywhere else.

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office ”
Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travellers, “ Go straight down to the corner.Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat.In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles.Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “ Go north two miles.Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure distance in time, not miles.“ How far away is the post office ” you ask.“ Oh,” they answer, “ it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “ Yes, but how many miles is it ” They don’t know.
It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation A New Yorker might say, “ Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “ I don’t know”.People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one.A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

We were on the way from Hutchinson to Chicago for a short spring break. For many years I had wanted to take my family on the train. We all had been to Chicago four years ago, and the kids loved it.Chicago is one of my favorite cities, too, so the thought struck me again last fall to ride the train to Chicago.Of course, flying would have been faster. But I don’t think flying is easier, especially these days, with all the security and waiting in lines at airports.
Though we were tired in the middle of the night, the kids got on the train with the exhilaration of this adventure.“We’re moving”, my son William shouted happily with big eyes as the train began to pull away from the Hutchinson station.
I removed my shoes and lay down to try to finish my night’s sleep. The sleeper car would have better enabled that, but the ordinary train seats were not too bad.An airline flight is a more miserable experience for me: not enough room, two hours of pain with my knees almost touching my chin, the hard seat back in front cracking my kneecaps (膝盖) with every move of the body planted in front of me.On the train I could almost outstretch all of my 6-foot-2-plus body in the generous legroom.
The journey didn’t feel at all as long as it was.We all found the train ride a joy.The car ride would have felt every minute of 13 hours. But on the train you are free to walk around, sit in the observation carriage for a while and enjoy the scenery out the windows, have a nice meal in the dining car, read a book, or play a board game.
In short, the train is all about enjoying the trip, which isn’t something I do so much when traveling by airline or by car, when the trip seems more of a mission (任务) to get there than an experience to enjoy along the way.
Chicago offers much to do for a family. This time, getting there was half the fun.

5.What does the underlined word “exhilaration” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Tiredness. B.Relaxation.
C.Excitement. D.Worry.
6.In the third paragraph, an airline flight experience is mentioned to show .
A.a train ride is more comfortable
B.a train ride is too long
C.an airline flight is miserable
D.an airline flight is easier
【解析】选A。
7.Which of the following words best describes the whole family’s feeling about the train journey

If you are planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
First of all, always check and double check departure (启程) time.It is amazing how few people really do this carefully.Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten, my secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50.When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have some local cash with you when you arrive in a country.Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead.“Listen! I only take real money!” the driver said angrily.Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was embarrassing.
The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave.I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.

Open a few windows and turn off the air conditioner (空调).You should also help your children keep their good, green habits from home to place while travelling.Sometimes vacation can mean more than one shower each day—once in the morning and again after getting out of the pool.Pay attention to the number of showers and the length of showers. 5.
