A high school senior in California called Ahmed Muhammad has started an organization that designs science kits (配套工具) for primary school students. He launched Kits Cubed to introduce kids to the wonders of science through fun, affordable, and accessible means, which owed to a babysitting experience.
He was babysitting his nephew when he decided that the activity for the day would be a science experiment. His nephew told him that he hated science because he was bad at it. “He literally loved everything and then when I brought up science, he doubted himself,” Muhammad told CNN. Muhammad was not going to let his nephew's self-doubt continue, so he decided to use simple science experiments to convince him that he was not bad at science.
“We went to the store together and I had him pick out potatoes, and then I went to the hardware store(五金店) to buy some copper nails, some galvanized (镀锌的) nails and some wire. And then, we made a battery out of them,” he said. That was how Muhammad successfully convinced his nephew that he was not bad at science. “He actually likes science now,” he said.
From this experience, Muhammad started thinking to help more kids like his nephew. With the help of his teachers, he started designing science kits that explored real science concepts with simple everyday materials. So far, Kits Cubed sells three kinds of kits, with three experiments in each kit. Each kit sells for $15.
According to Muhammad, Kits Cubed has reached more than 2,000 young people in Oakland so far. “My nephew told me he was bad at science. He didn't like it. I want to remove that thought, and replace it with ‘I'm good at science and I can be a scientist if I want to’ . That's what I really want them to get out of the kits,” said Muhammad.
24. What can we learn from Muhammad's babysitting experience

Chinese paleontologists ( 古生物学家) have determined that, about 47 million years ago, subtropical ( 亚 热 带 的 ) forests once existed on the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
The conclusion, which appears in a paper published on Tuesday, was drawn based on the large number of fossils found in the Baingoin Basin(班戈盆地) at an altitude of nearly 5,000 meters during the second comprehensive scientific expedition to the plateau.
A joint team from the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden conducted the research on the fossils. By combining the findings and models, the team recreated the climate and altitude that existed 47 million years ago, showing that the central plateau had an altitude of just 1,500 meters and an annual average temperature of 19℃, says Su Tao, a researcher from the tropical botanical garden and first author of the paper.
“It was covered by thick forest and was rich in water and grass. It is fair to call it the ‘ShangriLa’ of ancient times,” Su adds.
The researchers have also found over 70 plant fossils, the majority of which are
most closely related to plant life in today's subtropical or tropical regions.
“This is enough to show that the central part of the now high-altitude, freezing Qinghai-Tibet Plateau had flourishing subtropical plants 47 million years ago,” Su
says.
The findings provide new evidence for the study of the evolutionary history of biodiversity and the evolution of the plateau's landscape, according to Zhou Zhekun, the paper's corresponding author and a researcher at the tropical botanical garden.
China launched the second comprehensive scientific expedition to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in June 2017, 40 years after the first. Lasting up to 10 years, the expedition will conduct a series of studies focusing on the plateau's glaciers, its biodiversity and ecological changes, and will also monitor the changes in climate.
28. How did the paper come to the conclusion
A. Through the observation of the Baingoin basin.
B. Through the drawing of a large number of fossils.
C. Through the fossils found in scientific expedition.
D. Through the adventure on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.
29. What can be inferred according to Su Tao
A. The average altitude of the plateau was 1,500 meters.
B. “Shangrila”means a place with abundant water and grass.
C. The flourishing subtropical plants have covered the plateau.
D. The fossils found by researchers are tropical or subtropical plants now.
30. Where might the passage come from
A. The Times.
C. Chinese National Geography.
31. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To inform.
C. To persuade.
B. The Economist.
D. The Wall Street Journal.

A competition making up Versailles literature was launched on Sina Weibo recently. So what is Versailles literature
Actually, the term has nothing to do with the French palace nor with literature. It came from The Rose of Versailles, a Japanese manga(漫画) series about noble life at the palace ofVersailles in France in the late 18th century, and was coined by a Chinese influencer earlier this year. Known as humblebragging, it is a boast disguised as a complaint. “I have too many houses. How can I decide which one to decorate ” and “I thought I lost weight this morning. So disappointed when I realized it was because I took off the huge diamond ring my boyfriend gave me last night” are some examples of Versailles literature. The intention is to show off—usually things of materialistic values, yet one ought to pretend that’s not the point.
As the 19th century English author Jane Austen famously wrote, “Nothing is more deceitful(behaving in a dishonest way)than the appearance of humility (谦逊).” The psychology behind humblebragging is to be recognized for one’s successes and be liked by others at the same time, according to scholars. In her article titled Why do people hate humblebragging published in Psychology Today, psychologist Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne at the University of Massachusetts Amherst noted that humblebragging is a “strategy in pursuit of respect” because it draws attention to one’s accomplishments in a circuitous way.
However, studies on social media users show that humblebragging as a self-promotion strategy does not work. In the essay Humblebragging: A distinct and inefective self-presentation strategy, the University of North Carolina researcher Ovul Sezer and Harvard University scholars Francesca Gino and Michael Norton concluded from their research that humblebraggers are regarded more negatively than straight braggers ( 吹 牛 者 ) due to the former’s insincerity. “The critical factor differentiating the two groups of people is sincerity. People don’t like braggers, but they at least see them as more sincere than humblebraggers,” said Francesca Gino.
So, how can we annoy humblebraggers back “Just pretend you don’t get whatever it is they try to show off,” a netizen advised. “And respond with genuine sympathy for their complaints.”
32. Which of the following statements is typical of “Versailles literature”
A. Got five offers to date. I’m at a loss which to choose.
B. You know who my father is My father is the headmaster.
C. It’s a headache how to make my son tidy up his room regularly.
D. I’m fed up with living in the countryside with no shopping malls around.
33. What is the psychology behind humblebragging
A. To show his/her sincerity.
C.To earn others’ admiration.
B.To mask his/her complaint. D.To win others’ sympathy.
34. What does the underlined world “circuitous” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Ambiguous.
C. Double-edged.
B. Roundabout.
D. Straightforward.
35. What can’t be inferred from the passage
A. Braggers are relatively more sincere than humblebraggers.
B. Humblebragging is an artificial appearance of being humble.
C. To respond with real sympathy will discourage humblebraggers.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短

On an ordinary Thursday afternoon, I turned up the next walkway. Children played in the yards along the block. I waved to them as I walked by, delivering mail at houses along the way.
Some mailmen preferred routes where they drove a truck and slipped the mail into a collection of mailboxes without seeing anyone face to face. Not me. I wanted to be outside talking to people. That's where the excitement was. The lady who lived there opened the door wide. “Hello,” she said. I knew what she was waiting for. I've got your book club selection,” I said, handing over her package.
There were only about 700 people on my route. Over the years I'd gotten to know most of them, if not in person then by their mail. There were the folks who got magazines, or book after book, those who loved their catalogues, and some who had steady pen pals. I knew I provided an important service in my job. College acceptances, birthday presents, postcards from all corners of the world — they could all make someone's day. I also brought doctor bills and insurance notices.
Mrs. Dorman at the end of my route got a package from the Home Shopping
Network almost every day. She was an older lady, who'd turned 78, and I liked being able to bring a little joy into her life with my delivery. She got her blood pressure pills and blood test kits for diabetes (糖尿病) in the Yesmail. Yes, convenient. But I was just the messenger, showing up every day like clockwork. It wasn't me who was making a difference in people's lives. Not me personally. A friendly hello, a chat with a lonely person. That was the most I could offer.
I dug in my bag for Mrs. Dorman's mail — and the inevitable Home Shopping Network package. She'd be glad to get this, whatever it was. Mrs. Dorman often
waited for me at the door and we always had a nice talk, but not today. 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

应用文写作【答案】One possible version:
Last Sunday, our school held a charity sale on the playground to raise money for the flood-stricken areas. All the students took part in it.
At 8 a.m. our headmaster made a statement announcing the opening of the charity sale. And then a variety of things made by ourselves were sold. Eventually, we earned 5000 yuan and donated the money to the charity.
Thanks to the enthusiasm and selflessness displayed by our classmates, this event turned out to be a great success. We went back home realizing that all of us can make a contribution to our society.
读后续写
Para 1: I heard the TV going inside so I knew she was home. I knocked at the door, but no one answered. A little worried, I pushed it open, stepped into the house and found Mrs. Dorman lying face down in the hallway. Her arm was caught in an armchair which fell on top of her. She seemed to be having trouble breathing — probably from the heavy chair. I called 91l immediately. Arriving fast, they lifted Mrs. Dorman onto a stretcher and carried her to the ambulance.
Para 2: Mrs. Dorman was back home within a few days, her broken shoulder in a sling. I was sure happy the day she greeted me at the door herself again. We greeted each other as usual. “I was watching TV on Thursday morning and lost my balance getting up,” she explained. “All that time I was praying. Praying for you. I knew you'd come just as you do every day. That's what gave me comfort.” I realized I could make some difference to their life. It was just an ordinary Thursday. And that was extraordinary.

读后续写
【答案】I heard the TV going inside so I knew she was home.
Mrs.

First, drinking tea protects hearts. Tea drinkers will jump at the good news. The research done in the Boston area shows that drinking at least two cups of black or green tea a day could reduce your chance of dying after a heart attack by 44 percent.
Second, exercise preserves good health. Exercise offers all of the obvious benefits: it helps to lose weight, grow bigger muscles and make a healthier heart. And it also calms our nerves. All forms of exercise help people to lighten up. Experts say just 30 minutes of brisk activity most or all days of the week can offer you a powerful benefit.
Third, we should try our best to fight the flu. Hand-washing prevents spreading viruses from one person to another. Fresh fruit and vegetables rich in vitamin C are necessary part of wintertime diet. Winter indoor heating dries out the air and makes us easily come down with the flu. You can simply place an open bowl of water over the heaters. Cold weather is no excuse for staying indoor.
