三、阅读理解
My mother has a dining table which sits right in the middle of her dining room.It was once buried beneath piles of papers—magazines, articles, copies of schedules for vacations she took back in the 1990s,and baby pictures of grandchildren who are now paying off their college loans.
My brother Ross and I recently flew to New York to visit my mother.“Mom,why don't we go through all that stuff?” Ross said.“No.Don't touch it!” My mother said. The next afternoon, when she couldn't find a bill she needed,Ross suggested it might be put somewhere in the dining room and that we find it together.“Besides,” he said,“all those papers are clearly stressing you out.” However,my mother just said,“Are you boys hungry?” And then she seemed to have lost herself in deep thought.
On our last night there,my mother walked up to us with a small pile of unopened mails, which she had collected at the western edge of the dining table, and said,“Help me go through these.” “Sure,” I said. When we had succeeded in separating wheat from chaff (谷壳),I asked,“Would you want to deal with another little pile of papers?”
My mother led the way, walking into the dining room the way an animal manager might be while entering a cage with tigers in it.Ross and I came in behind her and suddenly he reached for a pile of the papers on one side of the table.“No!” my mother said sharply.“Let's start at the other end. That's where the older stuff is.” Finally,we threw 95 percent of the stuff into paper shopping bags. Then I asked what she wanted us to do with them, she surprised us all by saying,“Put them in the incinerator (垃圾焚化炉).”
When I returned home, inspired by the visit to my mother,I sorted out my own accumulated(累积的) piles of papers, sold or gave away half of my possessions, and moved into a smaller house. It seems that my life has been cheaper and easier since then. And it proves that a small change does make a big difference.

On the Christmas of 1949 we didn't have a tree. My dad had as much pride as anybody, I suppose, so he wouldn't just say that we couldn't afford one. When I mentioned it, my mother said that we weren't going to have one this year, that we couldn't afford one, and even if we could, it was stupid to decorate your house with a dead tree. I wanted a tree badly and I thought that if we had one, everybody would feel better.
About three days before Christmas, I was out collecting for my paper route. It was fairly late—long after dark and it was snowing and very cold. I went to an apartment building to try to catch a customer who hadn't paid me for my newspapers for nearly two months—she owed me seven dollars. Much to my surprise, she was at home. She invited me in, and not only did she pay me, but also gave me a dollar tip! It was a windfall for me—I now had eight whole dollars. What happened next was totally unplanned. On the way home, I walked past a Christmas tree shop and an idea hit me.
There was a real nice tree. It had been a very expensive tree and no one had bought it. Now it was so close to Christmas that the man was afraid no one would buy it. He wanted ten dollars for it, but when I — in my childish innocence — told him I only had eight, he said he might sell it for that. I really didn't want to spend the whole eight dollars on the tree, but it was so pretty that I finally agreed.
I dragged it all the way home, about a mile. Along the way I tried hard not to damage it or break off any branches. It was still in pretty good shape when I got home. I propped(支撑) it up against the railing(栅栏) on our front porch(走廊) and went in.

四、读后续写
Paragraph 1:
My heart was bursting as I announced that I had a surprise. I'd been picturing my dad's furious face a million times on my way home, as he valued his self esteem too much to accept that his son purchased something he couldn't afford. But I still didn't dare to look at him in the eye. After I told them I spent the eight whole dollars on it, the house sank into silence, with only the sound of the drifting rustling Christmas snow. Obviously, they were shocked. I was almost sure I made a stupid deal until I heard Mum shout, “WOW! That's the best surprise I've ever received from my son!”
Paragraph 2:
Dad and I brought the tree in and we made a stand for it. It was undeniably the most beautiful Christmas tree, gigantic as a hill, upright as a soldier. While decorating it, I stole a glimpse at my dad, and to my surprise, he had tears in his eyes. And I could tell those were tears of joy. That was the first time I had felt like I did something great.
