Togo
The year is 1925 and a deadly epidemic has struck the Alaskan town of Nome. The only cure is 600 miles away and a massive storm is about to strike the region. Jennifer Rocha, who graduated from UC San Diego, said she wanted to thank her parents for support by taking graduation photos in the fields where she worked alongside them since high school.
“I wanted to take those pictures out there, specifically in the field, because that’s what made me go to college,” Rocha said. “That was my dad’s lesson of saying: If you don’t pursue a higher education, you’re going to be working here the rest of your life.” Rocha said her parents encouraged her and her siblings to pursue a higher education.
She started working in the fields with her parents when she was a junior in high school. Each day, she would go home and work planting strawberries overnight. “It was tough labor,” Rocha said as she remembered working late nights in the fields. “I was like, ‘You know what I don’t want to be doing this my whole life.’”
Completing the past four years of college was not always easy for Rocha. While being a full-time student, she also worked at the university’s police department to help pay for her tuition. She worked long hours to fund her education. At times, her work shifts wouldn’t end until 4 or 5 am, leaving only a few hours to spare before the next class. “I have class at like 8 am, and it’s not worth me driving and then coming back,” Rocha said. “So, I would just nap in my car and then go to class after that. It was tough times, but I mean, we got that diploma.”
Rocha hopes her photos and her story will be an inspiration to immigrant families. She said it was important to include her parents in her graduation photos. “I wanted to not just honor them but honor all the migrant skilled workers, because a lot of times they aren’t recognized and we forget about them. My parents being migrant workers were able to have three girls get their college education, and you can do it, too, and your kids can.” she said.

C. To show her preference for field work. D. To share her joy of finishing college.

A. Exciting. B. Boring. C. Laborious. D. Carefree.
27. What does Rocha intend to do through her story
A. To stress the importance of education. B. To remind others of labor’s value.
C. To win awards at college graduation. D. To inspire others to pursue education.

Kids, parents, teachers and health experts are calling for traditional school uniforms to be replaced with sports uniforms five days a week.
Matthew Mclaughlin and a team of researchers, found in a recent survey four in five parents and six in ten teachers support a change in uniform policy allowing students to wear sports uniforms every day. The research also showed 62 percent of primary school students and 72 percent of secondary school students would prefer to wear a sports uniform five days a week. “We think sports uniforms should be worn five days a week and that would be a saving of $167 for primary students and $363 for secondary students in Victoria,” Mr. Mclaughlin said. “Sports uniforms are cheaper than traditional uniforms. Most sports uniforms consist of a tracksuit, a polo shirt with school logo, sport shorts and trainers.”
He said older students strongly agreed they would be more active wearing sports uniforms due to traditional uniforms being “too uncomfortable”. “The sports uniforms make it easier for students to engage in more physical activity. An example of this is girls being able to play on monkey bars without having to worry about exposing their underwear while going upside down. Thev can already see from a young age that this sets them apart from the boys.”
Geoff Roberts said his school’s students had been wearing an “active wear uniform” since the start of the year. “It’s incredibly popular with students. It’s everyday comfort, easy to wash ane dry and gender diverse,” he said. It had increased the students’activity levels at lunch and recess.
Independent Schools Victoria chief executive Michelle Green said independent schools set their own uniform policies and had adopted a wide range of approaches. “Some don’t prescribe(规定)a uniform at all,” Ms Green said. “In recent years there has been a trend among many schools toward more flexible and in some cases more informal policies on uniforms. This has included gender neutral options and uniforms that don’t restrict physical activity, particularly for girls.”

A. It is informal to wear sports clothes. B. Uniform policies are becoming flexible.

We’re all familiar with songs getting stuck in our head while we’re awake, but it turns out this can happen during sleep as well. A new study investigating the phenomenon indicates that earworms invading(侵入)our brains at night could cause problems in getting to sleep and staying asleep.
“Our brains continue to process music even when none is playing, including apparently while we are asleep,” says Michael Scullin.
He and his colleagues used surveys of 199 people, as well as a sleep lab test involving 50 volunteers, to measure how listening to music before bedtime affects sleep. In particular, the team focused on catchy earworms.
Earworms were reported throughout the night by participants, with those catching an earworm taking longer to fall asleep, spending more time in the light stages of sleep, and waking up more times during the night. Surprisingly, the instrumental versions of the songs caused about twice as many earworms and more subsequent sleep problems than the versions with vocal(声乐)
“We thought that people would have earworms at bedtime when they were trying to fall asleep, but we certainly didn’t know that people would report regularly waking up from sleep with an earworm,” says Scullin. “But we saw that in both the survey and experimental study”.
Past studies have linked late-night music listening with better sleep in those with insomnia(失眠), perhaps because it can relax the body.
Scullin suggests avoiding listening to music right before bed to limit the chance of a catchy tune taking hold in our minds. Engaging in some other cognitive activity before sleeping, like making a list of jobs for the next day, might also help clear the mind, Scullin says.
“Everyone knows that music listening feels good,” says Scullin. “Adolescents and young adults routinely listen to music near bedtime. But sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. The more you listen to music, the more likely you are to catch an earworm that won’t go away at bedtime. When that happens, chances are your sleep is going to suffer.”
32. What may happen to us if we have earworms at night
A. We may have a sound sleep. B. We may fall asleep in no time.
C. We may wake up fewer times. D. We may suffer a light sleep.
33. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. People have earworms at bedtime.
B. People wake up from sleep with an earworm.
C. People have more problems with vocal versions.
D. People suffer earworms after hearing instrumental songs.
34. What does Scullin advise us to do before bed
A. List the songs we have listened to. B. Avoid listening to music.
C. Listen to music to relax our body. D. Count worms to fall asleep soon.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Late night music gets you to sleep soon. B. Music can relax your body.
C. Earworms hurt you when you are asleep. D. Many people have sleep problems at night.

I never thought that I understood her. She always seemed so far away from me. I loved her, of course. We shared mutual(相互的)love from the day I was born. I came into this world with a head out of shape because of the hard labor my mother had gone through. Family members and friends wrinkled their noses at the disfigured baby I was. But no, not her. Nana thought I was beautiful. Her eyes twinkled with happiness at the ugly baby in her arms. Her first granddaughter. Beautiful, she said.
Before final exams in my junior year of high school, she died. Seven years ago, her doctors diagnosed Nana with Alzheimer’s disease. Seven years ago, our family became experts on this disease as, slowly, we lost her.
She always spoke in broken sentences. As the years passed, the words she spoke became fewer and fewer, until finally she said nothing at all. We were lucky to get one occasional word out of her—beautiful. It was then that our family knew she was near the end.
About a week or so before she died, she lost the abilities for her body to function at all, and the doctors decided to move her to a hospice, where those who entered would never come out.
I told my parents I wanted to see her. I had to see her. My uncontrollable curiosity had taken a step above my nervous and emotional fear.
My mother brought me to the hospice two days after my request. My grandfather and two of my aunts were there as well, but all hung back in the hallway as I entered Nana’s room. She was sitting in a big, soft chair next to her bed, eyes shut, mouth hanging open. The medicine was keeping her asleep. My eyes darted(看)around the room at the windows, the flowers, and the way Nana looked. I was struggling very hard to take it all in, knowing that this would be the last time I ever saw her alive.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I slowly sat down across from her. The word brought back a lot of happy memories.

Dear Johan,
Thank you for your interest in joining the Chinese Painting Club. Unfortunately, I regret to inform you that your application has been turned down because the club has already recruited enough members.
Considering that you are extremely fascinated by Chinese culture, I highly recommend the Peking Opera Club, which also enjoys great popularity and is now recruiting new members. Hopefully, not only will the club provide an opportunity to work out regularly, but it’ll also offer a glimpse of traditional Chinese culture. I’m sue you’ll have great fun.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
三、参考答案
I slowly sat down across from her. I took her left hand and held it in mine. I just sat and stared, motionless, in front of her, unable to feel anything. I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out. I could not get over how awful she looked sitting there, helpless. Then her little hand wrapped around mine tighter and tighter. Her voice sounded like a soft cry in pain. And then, she spoke, “Beautiful.”
The word brought back a lot of happy memories. I saw her bringing me roses and smiling with pride. I saw her tap dancing on our kitchen floor. I saw her sitting with me in my living room at Christmas time admiring our brightly decorated tree. I then looked at her as she was, tears full of my eyes. I slowly released her hand from mine and kissed her. And with one long last look, I turned and left the hospice.

W: Don’t throw the bottle away. It’s not good for the environment.
M: Well, I can’t use it again. I don’t need it for anything.

M: That’s a beautiful painting you did. I loved painting when I was in high school. Did you learn to paint in college

M: I’m going to cook dinner for us all tonight.
W: What are you making
M: Sausages and creamy potatoes. It’s a British classic.
W: Anna doesn’t eat meat. She stopped when we were spending our holiday in July last year. (7) Remember she couldn’t eat anything we cooked at Christmas
M: It was because she saw all the spring lambs. Don’t worry. I got her some fish instead. She still eats fish, yeah
W: Yes, but don’t add milks to the potatoes. Glen can’t eat dairy products.

W: Mom and Dad will have been together for 30 years nest month. We should throw them a party. (8)
M: We just had one a week ago for your birthday. And besides, everyone will be together for our graduation the month after that!
W: This party is for them, not us! I think it is an important date to celebrate. We should just go out and have a nice dinner at a restaurant.
M: OK, I understand. Let’s just make food for everyone and have a nice evening at home.
W: It will be more work to make food, though. There will be a lot of people. I will ask everyone to bring something, like at a barbecue. Or we can take them out to a personal dinner ourselves.
M: Instead of that, let’s just pay for them to go out together. (9)
Text 8
M: Rambo bit another dog today. That’s the second time this month. (10) I think we need to stop taking him to the dog park during his walks. He pulled the rope right out of my hands to chase after one of the neighbor’s dogs. We get a fine every time he does it, and we can’t afford to pay a third time!
W: Why don’t we pay for lessons I saw an advertisement for a dog-training place in the local paper. (11) (12)That seems like the best answer.
M: Do those classes even work I always see them in magazines and on television, but I never hear if they actually work. Rambo is a part of our family now, but this has to change. I don’t want to be worried every time we take him out of the house.
W: I’ll call the one I saw, because I know it is a local business. (12) Hopefully, we can talk to other customers and see if they are having positive results with their dogs.
Text 9
W: Dad is asking you and me to help him pick fruit in the garden. There is so much fruit that he can’t get it all himself. (13)
M: But I’ve been at school all week. I’ve just done a load of homework, and I was looking forward to relaxing in front of the TV. (14)
W: Consider your father. He has also been working all week.
M: But I don’t feel like I have any energy.
W: Fresh air will make you feel better. Dad says there are mountains of fruit this year, and you know how much you enjoy eating it.
M: Which does he want me to pick
W: Well, I’m going to pick the strawberries. Apples and pears also need picking. (15)
M: Which is Dad doing at the moment (15)
W: He is up a ladder picking apples, so I guess he’ll want you to do the others. (15)
M: What’s the hurry, anyway The fruit will still be there tomorrow and the day after, won’t it (16) It won’t go bad so quickly.
W: Haven’t you seen the weather forecast A huge storm is on the way. It will all be lost if we don’t get it today.(16)
M: OK, I’ll go out now. I’m hungry anyway, so I might eat a few while I’m picking them.
W: Make sure you wash them before you eat.
Text 10
Did you know that more than three billion people live on less than $2.50 a day and an estimated 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty making $1.25 or less daily Extreme poverty is a global issue, but different poverty levels make it difficult to compare them. (17) For example, someone living in America earning $5 an hour may be a lot poorer than someone earning $1 an hour in Africa. The World Bank has been monitoring the poverty line since it was created. (18) It estimates that in 1990, 36% of the world’s population was below the poverty line. However, two decades later, this number had been reduced to 18%. (19) By 2030, it wants this mumber to be at 3%. Although this may seem like an impossible task, they are going to focus on fast income growth for the bottom 40%. They also want to see a rise in shared prosperity. One idea that is gaining popularity is the idea of a basic income, with organizations such as the Omidyar Network supporting it. (20) This would mean everyone got paid, regardless of whether they have a job or not. Finland ran a trial for two years with great success, (20) and after the coronavirus, many countries including Spain and Scotland are seriously considering introducing one. Senior officials within the United Nations have also voiced their support, and urged other countries to look at it as a solution to many world issues.
