The second Sunday in May is Mother's Day. American children of all ages give their mothers something special. Children, young and old, try to show their love to mothers on the day. However, do you know that Mother's Day celebration is not a recent thing
The UK was the first country to set a day for mothers. In the United States, Mother's Day became an official holiday in 1914. An American girl, Anna, asked their governor to set a festival for mothers that they loved. Therefore, they set the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day and a year later all the other states celebrated it.
In the morning of Mother's Day, some American children serve their mothers breakfast in bed. Other children will give their mothers presents which they make themselves or buy in stores. Adults give their mothers red carnations(康乃馨),the official Mother's Day flower. If their mothers left the world, they may bring white carnations to their grave sites (墓地). This is the busiest day of the year for American restaurants. On this special day, family members do not want their mother to cook dinner!

On the day of the Balloon Festival, I felt as light as a hot-air balloon. This year I wouldn't just be watching. I'd be riding in Mr. J's truck, following the balloon and meeting it when it came down.
It was a perfect day. Dad and I drove down the road around the lake and turned into the parking area. Dad pointed to the lake. “That's where you are to find the workers,” he said.
We came to a stop and I got out of the car.
And then I saw a white bird with a brown head and skinny legs. It cried and thrashed(剧烈扭动) in the dirt in front of the cars. Its wings looked broken. Suddenly it shrieked (尖叫)and flew off.
“Dad,” I called, but my father was watching the balloons.
“It's a killdeer(双胸斑沙鸟).” I turned to see a silver-haired old woman. “It has a nest here somewhere,” she said. “In the parking area ” I asked. She nodded firmly. “It was a nesting place before it became a parking area.”
“Jack!” Dad called. “It is time for us to meet Mr. J.”
“I have to go,” I said. But the woman pointed with her walking stick. There was a clutch of killdeer's eggs. They were almost in the road of cars, trucks, and motorbikes.
Suddenly, the parent bird was back. Its wings twisted again. “Jack!” Dad called again. “Jack, the balloons are ready to come down.”
“Dad! I am...” A truck roared over the hill. That was Mr. J. Dad jumped onto the truck. “What's the matter We must go now,” said Dad angrily from the truck.

根据第二段第三句“An American girl, Anna, asked their governor to set a festival for mothers that they loved.”
根据第二段第四句“Therefore, they set the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day and a year later all the other states celebrated it.” 故选A。
根据第三段第三句“Adults give their mothers red carnations, the official Mother's Day flower.”
1.D 根据空格后的“Mother's Day is a lot quieter than others—they usually all stay out of the public eyes.”
2.B 根据本段主题句“Stay out of the public eyes”可知,本段主要讲远离公众视线,结合空格前一句“There actually aren't a ton of things on this special day.”
3.F 根据空格前提到“王室坚持送花和小礼物这一传统”,结合空格后“flowers are still at the top of the list for all British families on this holiday”可知,鲜花通常是所有英国家庭在母亲节的首选礼物。
故选A。
5.G 根据本段主题句“Spend time with their mothers”可知,母亲节那天王室成员会和他们的母亲共度时光,结合空格后“Kate Middleton has been known to spend time with her royal side of the family and then head out to Berkshire to see her own mother,Carole Middleton.”

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
“Dad, I am not going,” I said. “I have to stay here so the cars won't roll over the nest.” Because of so many things to deal with, my dad went away with Mr. J. Then the woman reminded me that it was time to come up with a plan to protect the nest. Just then several cars pulled over. I ran over to turn to them for help. It was not long before they understood everything. More drivers joined in. They parked the cars in the way to protect the nest.
Paragraph 2:
Soon a ring of cars surrounded the nest. Nothing or nobody was allowed to get close to the eggs. All the morning, we failed to take part in the Balloon Festival activities. By the time of noon, the festival was over. People began to leave. When Dad came to pick me up, only the woman and I were there, and the killdeer was watching over its eggs in the nest, which were perfectly safe. Though I missed the Balloon Festival, the day was still meaningful to me.
