Anyone who cares about what schools and colleges teach and how their students learn will be interested in the memoirs(回忆录) of Ralph W. Tyler, who is one of the most famous men in American education.
Born in Chicago in 1902, brought up and schooled in Nebraska, the 19-year-old college graduate Ralph Tyler became hooked on teaching while teaching as a science teacher in South Dakota and changed his major from medicine to education.
Graduate work at the University of Chicago established his connection with honorable educators Charles Judd and W. W. Charters, whose ideas of teaching and testing had an effect on his later work. In 1927, he became a teacher of the Ohio State University where he further developed a new method of testing.
Tyler became well known nationally in 1938, when he carried his work with the eight-year study from the Ohio State University to the University of Chicago at the invitation of Robert Hutchins.
Tyler was the first director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, a position he held for fourteen years. There, he firmly believed that researchers should be free to seek an independent spirit in their work.
Although Tyler officially retired in 1967, he never actually retired. He served on a long list of educational organizations in the United States and abroad. The idea of changing the world seems very crazy, but there are a number of small everyday things we can do to make the world munity centers, parks, libraries, homeless shelters, hospitals and schools are all places where students can make a difference through service.
Alisia Orosco, 10, wanted to show her love and care to the sick kids at Texas Children's Hospital, where her brother had been a patient. She earned money by doing part-time jobs and used it to buy different toys for the children in hospital. Now she visits three hospitals every year with bags of toys. “I hope to help as many kids as I can,” Alisia says. “It makes me happy to make them smile.”
High school students in a town of Washington made a difference to the lives of some needy children by building a playground at a worker's camp. They got a lot of help from a building supply store which provided free building materials for the project.
Teens in New Jersey decided to offer their help at a local soup kitchen where people with no homes can get free food. But there wasn't one. They created a one-day soup kitchen and were able to feed 60 needy people and allow them to take the rest. Their efforts got more people to understand the great need of the poor in their community. Because of their efforts and success, a permanent soup kitchen was created with the $10,000 National Award they received from Newman's Own.

Despite all the other fun activities around us today, there's no doubt that many people still love reading. Books can teach us plenty about the world, of course, as well as improving our vocabularies and writing skills. But can novels also make us better people
According to the Canadian psychologist Keith Oatley, people who read novels may improve their social skills. In his research, Oatley has found that each time we open a novel, we read about the characters and imagine ourselves into their position. When they are in danger, our hearts start to race. Characters hook us into stories. Without necessarily even noticing, we imagine what it's like to be them and compare their reactions with how we respond.
So people who read novels appear to be more skilled at working out what other people are thinking and feeling, which is an important social skill. But does that necessarily make them better people To test this, Oatley's team carried out an experiment, where researchers “accidentally” drop a number of pens on the floor and then see who offers to help pick them up. Before the pen-drop took place, participants were given a list of questions measuring empathy(共鸣). Then they read a short story and answered a series of questions to see if they had better performance on empathy. It worked: the people who expressed the most empathy for the characters were more likely to help pick up the pens.
So the research shows that reading novels does make people behave better. It sounds as though it's time to change people's fixed image of the shy bookworm whose nose is always in a book because they find it difficult to get on with real people. In fact, these bookworms might be better than everyone else at understanding human beings.
12.How do people improve social skills by reading novels according to Oatley
A.By choosing the right novels.
B.By understanding the characters.
C.By learning from the characters.
D.By measuring the value of novels.
13.Why do researchers drop pens in the experiment
A.To improve participants' social skills.
B.To help participants see their strengths.
C.To encourage participants to read more.
D.To check participants' willingness to help.
14.What is the writing purpose of the text
A.To present the result of a study.
B.To increase the interest in reading.
C.To stress the importance of social skills.
D.To introduce a way for scientific research.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.Make yourself a better reader.
B.Make novel-reading interesting.
C.Reading novels makes us better people.
D.Reading makes bookworms more popular.

Forgiveness
To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you,it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health.People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to recent research.
 16 Try the following steps:
Calm yourself. 17 You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure:a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.
Don't wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurts you does not intend to apologize. He may have wanted to hurt you or just doesn't see things the same way. 18 Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upsets you.
Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者).Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused your pain.Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
19 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender's point of view.
Don't forget to forgive yourself. 20 But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don't do it.
A.Why should you forgive
B.How should you start to forgive
C.Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.
D.Try to see things from your offender's angle.
E.For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.
F.To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.
G.If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.

Once upon a time, there was a man who was very helpful, kind-hearted, and generous. He was a man who would help someone without asking anything to pay him back. He would help someone because he wanted to and he loved to. One day while walking along a dusty road, this man saw a purse, and then he picked it up and found that the purse was empty. Suddenly, a woman with a policeman showed up and caught him.
The woman kept on asking where he hid her money but the man replied, “It was empty when I found it.”The woman shouted out angrily, “Please give it back. It's for my son's school fees.” The man realized that the woman really felt sad, so he handed her all his money. He could see that the woman was a single mother. The man said, “Take these.I am sorry for the trouble.” The woman left and the policeman held the man for further questioning.
The woman was very happy, but later on she found her money was doubled, which came as a shock. One day while the woman was going to pay her son's school fees towards the school, she noticed that some skinny man was walking behind her. She thought that he might rob her, so she approached a policeman standing nearby. He was the same policeman, who she took along to ask about her purse. C
根据第二段第一句中的“Alisia Orosco, 10, wanted to show her love and care to the sick kids...”以及最后一句中的“I hope to help as many kids as I can”及“It makes me happy to make them smile”可知,Alisia Orosco每年去医院给生病的孩子们送玩具,是为了给他们带来欢乐。故选D。

When they are in danger, our hearts start to race...we imagine what it's like to be them and compare their reactions with how we respond.”
根据第三段第三句“To test this, Oatley's team carried out an experiment, where researchers “accidentally” drop a number of pens on the floor and then see who offers to help pick them up.”
根据第一段第二、三句“Books can teach us plenty about the world...But can novels also make us better people ”及最后一段第一句“So the research shows that reading novels does make people behave better.”
根据第一段最后一句“But can novels also make us better people ”及最后一段第一句“So the research shows that reading novels does make people behave better.”
