Hello London Foodies!
I’m kicking off this week’s blog by talking about a fantastic new Turkish restaurant in Soho called Moda. I can’t remember ever eating better dolma or hummus—it was so delicious! The chef insists that fruit and vegetables are brought over every day from Turkey—and from nowhere else. He may be a perfectionist, but it was so delicious that I can’t complain. Moda isn’t cheap, but it’s worth every penny.
And I’ve got great news for you. When I told him that I write a food blog, he said he’d give all my readers a 10% discount! Just mention this blog when you book.
A very different restaurant, where I had lunch last Monday, is Chez Fitz. Situated near Leicester Square, its main selling point is that its food is all locally sourced (within 30 kilometers of the restaurant). My friends and I were completely surprised—we had no idea that so much could be grown so close to central London. But it turns out that there are pockets of green all over the city—you just need to know where to look.
One final point: I couldn’t believe how pricey my weekly shop was this week. Normally its about £40, but this week it was more than £55 for more or less the same amount of food. Any ideas why
More in a couple of weeks as I’m going away on my holiday tomorrow.
COMMENTS
Ecovore
I am not sure if we should be supporting restaurants like Moda. They are very bad for the environment. What about all the extra carbon emissions from the “food miles” created by bringing over those ingredients from Turkey
LondonMum
I know what you’re saying, Ecovor, but don’t have a go at restaurants like Moda. If we grow foreign vegetables in the U.K., then we have to use heated greenhouses and that probably uses even more energy.
21. What is a main selling point of Moda
A. It offers a good discount.
B. It sits in central London.
C. The ingredients are imported.
D. The chef is a perfectionist.
22. What’s Ecovore’s attitude toward restaurants like Moda
A. He is not concerned with them.
B. He supports them.
C. He is not for them.
D. He has hopes for them.
23. What would LondonMum agree with?
A. Foreign restaurants are worth a try.
B. Eating out worsens the environment.
C. Moda should use vegetables in London.
D. It’s unwise to grow foreign food in the U.K.
B
If our kids don’t fall, they don’t learn to get up. I still remember the day in high school that my mom forgot to pick me up from school. I’m the oldest of four children, and no doubt she’d had a long day with the other kids and it’d slipped her mind. After waiting at school for an hour, I walked the three miles home, and when I got to my house, I shut our front door with anger, stormed into the kitchen and screamed in my mom’s face that she’d forgotten me.
Later that night, my dad told me I no longer had a ride to school the next day. I figured my mom would still take me, but when the morning came, she refused. It was midterm then, and as a straight-A student ready to start college applications, being late wasn’t an option. In my mind, missing these tests means the end of my academic career. I begged my mom. I told her she was ruining my future and everything I’d worked for. But she held her ground, and that day, I walked to school. And I missed my tests.
My mom didn’t rescue me from failure. She let me suffer from it. She let me figure it out. She let me learn. Now, as a mom myself, I’ve realized that I want my kids to experience failure because failure is how we grow, learn and think outside of ourselves. It’s how we self-educate to learn what’s right and respectable, and what’s not. It’s how we become responsible and enthusiastic.
Falling down makes us better, because we learn how to get up.
24. Why did the author shout at her mother
A. Because she missed some important tests.
B. Because her mother had ruined her future.
C. Because she was tired after walking home.

25. What does the underlined phrase “held her ground” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Gave in to me. B. Said yes to me.
C. Stayed in the place. D. Stuck to her decision.
26. How does the author feel about her experience now
A. Angry. B. Beneficial.
C. Disappointed. D. Embarrassed.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Stop Rescuing Your Kids From Failure
B. Try to Meet Your Kids’ Requirements
C. Offer Your Kids Help if Necessary
D. Be Responsible for Your Kids’ Failure

The midnight was approaching and it was extremely rare to see vehicles on the road. However, several trucks pulled over and workers silently unloaded camera equipment and cardboard boxes, and then carried them inside the Morgenson family home.
What took place over the next eight weeks was inspired by a Hollywood movie called The Honeses about a family of marketers who move into a local neighborhood to sell their products secretly to their neighbors. The idea was to test the power of word-of-mouth marketing. By filming a family in unscripted (无剧本的) situations, my team and I would document how the Morgensons’ circle of friend responded to brands and products the Morgensons bought into their lives.
With the help of 35 video cameras and 25 microphones hidden inside the furniture, the operation done secretly showed something shocking. The most powerful hidden persuader of all isn’t in your TV or on the shelves of your supermarket. It’s a far more important influence that’s around you almost every waking moment: your very own friends and neighbors. There is nothing quite so persuasive as observing someone we respect or admire using a brand or product.
Our analysis also found that the brands the Morgensons used went faster. About one third of the Morgensons’ friends began promoting these same brands to their friends. We also found that the brands their friends were most likely to buy at the Morgensons’ suggestion were the bigger and better-known ones. This proves my thoughts that traditional marketing and secret marketing work well together. The most persuasive advertising strategies are strengthened by word-of-mouth advertising.
Whenever I meet with company managers, I tell them that the people who hold the real marketing power are mouse-clicking consumers and their wide circles of real-life friends. In other words, the people who hold the real power are us.
28. The author and his team went to the Morgenson family home to _________________.
A. visit the Morgensons B. sell products to them
C. carry out a marketing research D. shoot a Hollywood movie
29. According to the text, people are more likely to buy a product when _________________.
A. noticing an advertisement for it on TV
B. seeing their friends using the same product
C. someone is promoting it in the supermarket
D. the product appears repeatedly in a movie
30. In which part of a newspaper can you most probably read the text
A. Travel. B. Business.
C. Lifestyle. D. Entertainment.
31. Which of the following is WRONG
A. Traditional marketing is ineffective.
B. The real marketing power depends on the customers.
C. The research is carried out without any special design.
D. The customers’ choice is influenced by more than one factor.
D
It was a discovery that could change science. “We hit the jackpot (头奖) here,” said a British scientist, Guillem, about the discovery of a planet “more or less” like Earth that is orbiting Proxima Centauri, the star nearest to our solar system.
What do we know about this exciting new Earth Well, Proxima b, or “Earth II” as you could call it, is a little bigger than our Earth. Also, since it is so much closer to its red dwarf star than we are to the sun, the sky on its world is orange without any blue at all, creating a forever sunset effect.
There are a lot of questions for life forms that could live on this new planet. As the Chicago Tribune wrote in an article: “First, as reporter Lois Lane asked Superman in the first movie, Do you eat Do you have poetry Do you have any interest in visiting other worlds If so, put Earth on your Must See list.”
The discovery of the planet made the Chicago Tribune newspaper wonder if anyone had seen or heard of the U.S.’ space postcards from its Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 space probes, sent up into space in 1972 and the next year.
Included with the probes were pictures of a man and a woman, along with diagrams of the solar system. Gold records were also sent up into space on Voyager probes in 1977. If aliens on Proxima b had played the record, they would have found sounds and images that showed the incredible diversity of Earth.
Aliens might also have heard the message from former U.S. President Jimmy Carter: “This is a present from a small distant world… our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are trying to survive our time so we may live into yours. We hope someday, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic (星系的) civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination, and our good will in an … awesome universe.”
It might not be time to plan a visit to Proxima b just yet—even if it has an atmosphere—because first, we would need to invent a way to get there in less than the 78,000 years it would take at 36,000 mph (about 57,900 km/h).
“Proxima b looks to us like a promising Plan B, just in case things go really south on this blue planet,” the Chicago Tribune wrote.
32. Which of the following is TRUE about Proxima b
A. Proxima b is bigger and closer to the sun than Earth.
B. It is a newly discovered star in the solar system.
C. Proxima b has an atmosphere like the Earth
D. The sky of Proxima b turns orange at sunset.
33. The postcards and records were sent up into space on probes to _________________.
A. show off the incredible diversity of Earth to aliens
B. describe Earth and express friendly feelings to aliens
C. test if there were aliens in space
D. invite aliens to visit Earth
34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. Earth will get worse and worse in the near future.
B. Proxima b seems to be an alternative living place.
C. We will be able to settle in Proxima b soon.
D. Proxima b is more suitable to live in than Earth.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To give advice on how to visit a new planet.
B. To illustrate the thrills of moving to a new home in space.
C. To prove that aliens really exist on other planets.
D. To report on the discovery of an interesting new planet.
第2节
第3节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Empty nest syndrome (空巢综合征) is a phenomenon in which parents experience feelings of sadness and loss when the last child leaves home. You might find it difficult to suddenly have no children at home who need your care. 36 If you have only one child, you might have a particularly difficult time adjusting to an empty nest.
37 In the past, research suggested that parents dealing with empty nest syndrome experienced a sense of loss that makes them easy to experience depression, alcoholism and identity crisis. 38 When the last child leaves home, parents have a new opportunity to improve the quality of their marriage and restart interests for which they previously might not have had time.
If you’re experiencing feelings of loss due to empty nest syndrome, take action. 39 This might be an opportune time to explore or return to hobbies, leisure activities, or career pursuits.
Many suggest preparing for an empty nest while your children are still living with you. 40 They may include family vacations, long talks, and taking time off from work to make special memories. Also, make specific plans for the extra money, time, and space that will become available when children are no longer living at home.
A. What’s the impact of empty nest syndrome
B. You might also worry about your children’s safety.
C. What can parents do to deal with empty nest syndrome
D. Make plans with the family while everyone is still under the same roof.
E. Social support can be incredibly helpful during times of stress and loneliness.
F. For example, time and energy that you directed toward your child can now be spent on different areas
of your life.
G. However, recent studies suggest that an empty nest might reduce work and family conflicts, and provide parents with many other benefits.

As the saying goes, chance favored the prepared mind. I learned this from one of my experience.
I was not chosen as the member of the volleyball team of our school. Because of this, I decided to give up playing volleyball. Lucky, my best friend stopped me and pointed out that it was my laziness and poor preparation which led to my failure. After that, I practiced playing volleyball on every day. When other tryout arrived, I was fully prepared and tried my best. As a result, I selected and became an important player on our school team.
From this, I am firmly convincing that we are able to seize a chance as long as I get well prepared.

Dear Peter,
I’m writing to share a piece of good news with you.
Our school will run a Peking Opera Camp for exchange students this summer vacation. It starts from July 11th and ends on July 20th, lasting ten days. Some famous artists will offer basic courses on this national treasure, including singing, dialogues, movements as well as facial make-up. What they want to communicate through the courses is that Peking Opera is not just an art, but a symbol of traditional Chinese culture which deserves to be passed down from generation to generation.
Since you’re always keen on Peking Opera, so I sincerely hope you’ll take this chance. Join the camp and have a good time there!
