Scientists note that algal blooms are dressing up parts of the South Pole in emerald hues(翡翠色) so vast that they can be seen from space.
They made the first map of algae blooms on the Antarctic Peninsula—a 1,500-mile piece of land considered the warmest in the continent. “We have created the first ever large-scale map of microscopic algae as they bloomed across the surface of snow along the Antarctic Peninsula,” Matt Davey said. “Results indicate this ‘Green snow’ is likely to spread as global temperatures increase.”
The blooms are hardly a modern phenomenon. Ernest Shackleton even noted them on his ill-fated 1914 expedition. "We are not saying that the blooms are there now due to climate change; we do not have the data for that, the blooms have been observed there for decades since the early expeditions," Davey said.
And now that researchers have an accurate map of their current scope(范围), they can determine its continued growth. “We now have a baseline of where the algal blooms are and we can see whether the blooms will start increasing as the models suggest in the future,” Davey said.
Antarctica may not ever be mistaken for the Emerald Isle, but it may get a lot greener in the coming years. A big reason for that is the increasingly temperate conditions. These microorganisms grow wildly in water. And water, thanks to ice-melting temperatures, is becoming increasingly available in the Antarctic.
Indeed, green snow appears most common where average temperatures are about 32 degrees Fahrenheit during the region’s summer months from November to February.
“As Antarctic warms, we predict the overall mass of snow algae will increase, as the spread to higher ground will significantly outweigh the loss of small island patches(块) of algae,”Andrew Gray said.
Marine life, researchers add, also plays a role in how the green snow algae is distributed. Through their waste, mammals and birds accidentally produce a powerful fertilizer to speed algae along in its growth. Most of the blooms, for instance, were found with a few miles of a penguin colony, as well as the nesting sites of other birds and seals.
24.What does the underlined word “that” refer to
A.Ernest Shackleton failed in his expedition.
B.Climate change results in algae blooms.
C.The blooms are a modern phenomenon.
D.Global temperatures have been increasing.

A.To act as guide for traveling.
B.To mark the ecosystem in the Antarctic.
C.To judge its growth in the future.
D.To show the make-up of green snow.
26.How does marine wildlife help algae grow
A.By sheltering algae in their nesting sites.
B.By melting ice to provide water for algae.
C.By bringing algae to higher ground by chance.
D.By providing algae with nutrition in their fertilizer.
27.What might be the best title for the text
A.Green snow in Antarctica. B.A more colorful Antarctica.
C.The warming trend in Antarctica. D.The appearance of algae in Antarctica.

Losing a parent is one of the most painful parts of life. No matter how old we are when they leave us, it can be a painful experience. Our memories are all that is left of them and happy reminders of their love turn into our most valuable treasures.
That's how Mara Soriano feels about a very special teddy bear she lost in her recent move to a new apartment.
The toy bear didn't cost a lot, but it contained a recording of her late mother's voice telling her that she loved her and was proud of her. The bear, called "Mama Bear," was in a backpack that contained electronics like an iPad and a Nintendo Switch. When the bag was missing last week during the move, the 28-year-old, was heartbroken — not for the electronics, but for Mama Bear.
So she posted online about the lost item and the story behind it. Luckily, Mara's search soon became a hit. Meanwhile, Mara was out searching. She put up posters, dug through dustbins, and communicated with others online, following up any lead she could find.
Actor Ryan Reynolds posted an appeal for its safe return. "I think we all need this bear to come home," he wrote. Along with the message, he also set a price of $5,000 for the return.
Then on Tuesday night, Mara's special bear came home. It's a bit of a modern-day wonder that would never have happened without social media. Mara said she got an email from someone who told her they had the bear.
Mara is getting married next summer and the bear is going to have a special seat at the ceremony — the one her mother would sit in. For now, she's keeping "Mama Bear" close and sending thanks to those who helped with the happy reunion.

C.It was a present for her 28th birthday.
D.It had happy reminders of her mom's love.
30.What did Ryan do to help Mara

A Long March-5 rocket carrying the Chang’e-5 spacecraft took off from the Wenchang Space Launch Center on the southern Chinese island of Hainan at 4:30 am on Tuesday, 24 November. The journey to the moon will take around eight days.
The Chang’e-5 mission, named after the ancient Chinese goddess of the moon, will seek to collect lunar material to help scientists understand more about the moon’s origins and formation. The mission will test China’s ability to remotely acquire samples from space, ahead of more complex missions.
Spokesman for the Chang’e-5 mission, Pei Zhaoyu, said,“We think that there are two main purposes for the completion of this lunar sampling mission. One is the scientific purpose. We can conduct sampling through circumlunar(环月的) and moon landing explorations, but it is more intuitive(直觉的) and more direct to obtain samples for scientific research. Plus, there will be more instruments and more methods to study it on the ground. I think this is the scientific purpose. There is also an engineering purpose. Through the task of sampling and returning, we could have a more complete grasp of relevant technologies of lunar exploration.”
If the mission goes as planned, it will make China only the third country to have retrieved lunar samples, joining the US and the Soviet Union.
After entering the moon’s orbit, the spacecraft is intended to arrange a pair of vehicles to land the lunar surface: a lander and an ascender. The plan is for the lander to drill into the lunar surface, with a robotic arm scooping out soil and rocks. This kind of material will be transferred to the ascender vehicle, which is due to carry it from the surface and then dock with(对接) an orbiting module. The samples then will be transferred to a return capsule for the trip to Earth, with a landing in China’s Inner Mongolia region.
The probe is due to be on the lunar surface for about two days, while the entire mission is scheduled to take around 23 days.
32.What is the task of the Chang’e-5 mission
A.To help scientists learn more about Earth.
B.To know the ancient Chinese goddess of the moon.
C.To land a robotic spacecraft on the moon.
D.To get back samples from the moon’s surface.
33.What did Pei stress in his words
A.The significance of the mission. B.The course of collecting samples.
C.The achievements of the exploration. D.The scientific way of space exploration.
34.What is responsible for digging out rocks
A.The ascender. B.The lander.
C.The orbiting module. D.The return capsule.
35.What does the underlined word “retrieved” mean
A.Started out. B.Dealt with.
C.Got back. D.Put away.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Criticism is harmful to healthy relationships. It’s okay to express frustration if someone is behaving in a way that hurts you. 36 The following are some ways to catch criticism before it begins.
37 Before you criticize, pause and consider whether you really need to say anything at all. If someone did something to get on your nerves, do you really need to point it out Sometimes, it’s best to let small rudeness go. Take a few deep breaths and leave the room instead of criticizing.
Be realistic. Critical people often have very high expectations of those around them. Your tendency to criticize may come from expecting too much from those around you. Sometimes you may find yourself consistently annoyed or disappointed with others. 38
Separate the individuals from their actions. Critical people often focus on the negative aspects of a situation or a person, failing to see good qualities alongside negative ones. If you find yourself making assumptions about a person’s character, stop yourself. 39
We all behave poorly sometimes, but a single action is not a reflection of the character.
Focus on positives. Oftentimes, being critical results from how you’re choosing to see a situation. 40 Try to focus on a person’s positive qualities over their negative ones.
A.Never criticize others.
B.Think before you speak.
C.Everyone has drawbacks and imperfections.
D.It may be a good idea to adjust your expectations.
E.We should focus on other people’s disappointing actions.
F.Try to separate a disappointing action from the person doing the actions.
G.Being overly critical, however, can cause tension in a relationship over time.

Carl lost his job. He tried to find another one but it wasn’t easy. As a result, the poor fellow couldn’t pay his bills and he couldn’t even find anybody to lend him any money.
Carl spent most of his days at home. Sometimes he looked out of the window and watched his neighbor’s house. An old professor lived there alone. Strangely, he hardly talked to his neighbors. Carl could see into the professor’s house because he never drew the curtain. The rooms were full of antique, furniture and vases. Carl thought, “If I got an antique vase, I could sell it for a lot of money.”
Every day Carl saw the professor. He left at 10 o’clock in the morning and came back home at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. He had a dog. Carl often went to the fence and played with it or gave it a piece of meat.
One day Carl thought, “I will go into the professor’s house and steal a vase. I will break the window and climb in. The dog is not a problem.”
There was an old gun in the basement. It had been his great grandfather’s favorite thing a long time before. Carl didn’t want to use the gun but he thought, “Anything could happen.”
He wanted to hide the gun under his coat but it was too long so he had to cut the end off with a saw (锯).
The next morning he watched the professor leaving home at 10 o’clock. Carl climbed over the fence. The dog ran to him and Carl gave it a big bone. He threw a piece of stone through the window, which broke. It wasn’t high. He could climb into the house easily.
He looked around inside. There were paintings on the walls, small figures and vases on the shelves and the floor. Carl didn’t know much about arts. He couldn’t choose. He reached his hands towards a big vase when he heard a noise. The front door opened and someone entered the house.

读后续写:
Paragraph 1:
It was the professor. He had forgotten to take an important document with him. With the sound of the steps closer and closer, his mind went blank. His heart beating wildly, Carl made an attempt to hide himself behind the curtain but it was too late. At the sound of the door being clicked open in came the professor and the two almost ran into each other. Soaked with sweat, his body trembled with such great fear that he could not even say a single word. Suddenly he found himself taking out the gun from under his coat and pointed it at the professor.
Paragraph 2:
The professor was scared. “What are you doing ” said the professor in astonishment. Just at that moment, the dog entered. He wagged his tail and licked Carl’s shoes kindly. The tension in the room began to melt. A sense of guilt flooded Carl and he dropped the gun slowly, bursting out crying. Sighing with relief, the professor patted Carl on the shoulder and led him to the table beside the window. With his head buried in his palms, Carl apologized to the professor from the bottom of his heart and poured out his awful situation. Hearing this, the professor offered to lend him a helping hand with a job. Since then the two have become good friends!
