The United States celebrates Valentine's Day each year on February 14.Many other countries celebrate Valentine's Day,too, each in their own way. Here is a look at the Valentine's Day traditions in three countries.
Wales:land of love spoons
In Wales,it is called St.Dwynwen's Day,which takes place on January 25.The traditional romantic gift on this day is a love spoon.
Beginning in the 17th century,Welsh men made beautiful wooden spoons as a show of their love for that special person in their lives. Each shape of the spoons has a different meaning. For example, horseshoes mean good luck;keys represent the key to a lover's heart;and wheels are a sign of support.
Argentina:a week of sweets
Argentina celebrates Valentine's Day in February, but also gives a whole other week to love in July. They call it Sweetness Week.If you kiss someone, they have to give you a sugary treat.
Sweetness Week started in 1989 with a candy company called Arcor. They made an advertisement called "Candy for a Kiss".The idea was to give the company's chocolates and other candies in exchange for a sweet kiss on the cheek. The campaign had a stronger effect than the company expected—it led to a new holiday!
Every July, couples who take part give each other candies and kisses all week long.
South Korea:three is a charm
For South Koreans,Valentine's Day happens in three parts:February 14,March 14 and April 14.
On February 14,women traditionally give men gifts of chocolate to show their love. One month later,on a holiday known as White Day,men show their thanks by giving women a sweet gift. The name "White Day" comes from the custom of giving white-colored gifts.
Let's not forget Black Day on April 14.Single people who did not get gifts on February 14 or March 14 often gather on Black Day to eat noodles with black bean soup.

About 12 years ago,Sandy Cambron noticed her mother,Pearl Walker, had become quiet after she moved into a nursing home for patients of Alzheimer's disease in Kentucky.
"We tried everything - photos, old stories - but nothing worked," she said. "It was really hard for everyone to see how she had changed." Then one day while Sandy was in a toy store, she had an idea:Why not give Pearl a baby doll so she could feel as if she were caring for something again? And why not give one to all the other care center seniors?
As soon as Sandy gave Pearl the doll, her mother's face lit up. "She started talking again and she never went anywhere without that baby," Sandy said. "She took 'baby' to the dining room with her and slept with her in her arms every night. When she passed away a year later,we even buried her with that well-loved baby doll."
In the following 10 years,Sandy and her husband,Wayne Cambron, continued to buy dolls and hand them out to the elderly of care centers near their home every New Year. Now Pearl's Memory Babies is a nonprofit (非营利)organization that has contributed more than 300 dolls to old people with Alzheimer's disease at nursing homes since February 2018.
Last year,Sandy posted New Year's photos on Facebook, all of which are about seniors reacting to dolls that she and Wayne sent to a local nursing home. The post was shared more than 210,000 times overnight.People gave almost ﹩15,000 online. That helped the group buy many dolls.
"The dolls offer treatment and comfort," said Elise Hinchman, who works at a care center in Kentucky, "Some seniors cry when they get a doll. And they always rock and talk to their dolls.People with Alzheimer might lose their memories, but they don't lose their ability to love."

"The Last Dance",the documentary(纪录片),told the story of Michael Jordan and his success with the Chicago Bulls .We learned a lot about Michael Jordan. We took behind - the - scenes glimpses(一瞥)at what it's like to compete in the NBA.We were given a glimpse into the 90s basketball era (时代) at a time when almost no sports are being played. But it also meant something for our culture, experts say.

Michael Jordan matters for sports culture, too.Jordan set the standard when it came to connecting sportsmen to brands(品牌)and brands to sportsmen.Sportsmen can take care of their brand during their careers(职业生涯) and even after they stop doing sports.Shaquille O 'Neal is an example,Shuart said. The Los Angeles Lakers star - though highly celebrated for his basketball career一has built post-basketball success through business chances.
There might not have been too much new content in "The Last Dance" for sports fans who grew up in the Jordan era.But storytelling still provides a way for us to find happiness,Shuart said.
"Above all, even though we know the beginning, middle, and end,the storytelling provides wonderful insight and results in a very interesting story," he said.

If you've ever watched an elephant eat and drink with its trunk(象鼻),you may think it's simple.A new study by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology shows that elephant trunks are pretty cool but also complicated(复杂的).In fact, this research is among the small amount of new scientific information on elephants found in more than 100 years. And the research shows that elephants use several skills to move things.
When elephants pick up foods, they use different movements,Schulz, the study's lead researcher, says. They can also clean up objects. They can use the ends of their trunks to gently pick small objects. And they can use suction(抽吸)to pick up foods of different sizes. "They can get a tortilla(玉米饼)without ever breaking it," says Schulz. When elephants drink, they enlarge the inside of their trunk to store water before they drink it.And elephants may have many more skills up their trunks Schulz just hasn't worked them all out yet and needs to do more study into it.
To study elephant trunks,Schulz spent a lot of time working with an elephant named Kelly at Zoo Atlanta in Georgia. He chose her over two other elephants there because "she is amazing," Schulz says. "She likes exploring with her trunk, and she really likes something called 'enrichment.' That means we could work out interesting ways for her to find and get her food."
Learning about the ways Kelly's trunk works is interesting and important work, especially because no other researchers have found out about such things,Schulz says.It could also help engineers understand how to build more useful robots to help doctors do surgery(外科手术).And with some elephant populations in Asia and Africa quickly falling,Schulz sees the work as a way to help save these animals. "We're using science to encourage people to learn more about elephants," Schulz says. "And the more animals are studied ,the more likely they are to be protected."
12. What has the present study found out about elephant trunks? ______
A. The reasons for their big size.
B. The ways in which they work.
C. The differences in their shape.
D. The changes in them over the years.
13. What do we know about Schulz's study on elephant trunks? ______
A. It is carried out by Zoo Atlanta in Georgia.
B. It is the first in the field to be finished.
C. It tries a new way to study them.
D. It needs to be worked on further.
14. Why was Kelly chosen for the study? ______
A. She liked trying new things.
B. She had a special sense of food.
C. She had been in a similar study before.
D. She looked cleverer than other elephants.
15. What does the last paragraph center on? ______
A. The necessity of protecting elephants.
