There is more to tourism in Britain than you might think. When you think of tourist sites in Britain, what do you think of Big Ben and the Tower of London Lock Ness Shakespeare's birthplace at Strafford-upon-Avon There are many famous tourist attractions in the UK and they attract millions of visitors each year. But along with the famous names there are thousands of other interesting places that are only open to the public for a few days each year. Heritage Open Days takes place each September and lets the public visit places that would normally be out of bounds. Among the thousands of historic sites there are castles and factories, town halls and churches. Here we look at some of the places that most tourists might not know about.
Roman Baths—Chester
These Roman baths are almost two thousand years old and a fascinating insight into the history of the city but they aren't often open to visitors because they are under a clothes shop and a shop that sells baked potatoes! In Open Days week, visitors can go downstairs to the basement of the shops and find a little piece of history.
Tennis Club—Birmingham
Edgbaston Tennis Club opened in 1860 and is the oldest tennis club in the world. Visitors can see the club's collection of tennis clothes and equipment and learn about the game's rich history.
Ardman Animation—Bristol
The studios that produced the famous Wallace and Gromit animated films open its doors to the public to let people find out more about how the films are made.
Paddock Wood—Kent
A family house where some of the rooms are unchanged since the 1920s. The home's owner, Sarah Hamilton, is happy to open her doors to the public, saying “I'm passionate about history and I love talking to people.”

More and more travellers in China nowadays prefer homestays rather than traditional hotels, as they seek private living experiences. The house-sharing model was first introduced by the website in 2003. It is still the largest website for travellers to find accommodation (食宿) without much money to spend.
Encouraged by her great experience of homestays in France, Maggita, 30, considered short-term hire as her first choice in her future trips. She later went back to her hometown Shanghai and ran a “shared accommodation” business.
The short-term hire idea has been a win-win business model. For travellers, they can rent a special room at a reasonable price and also enjoy a firsthand experience of the local culture, compared with traditional hotels. For owners, they can gain much with daily rental. Now Maggita has quit her last job in an IT company and become a host of some 20 homestays, which enables her to earn a monthly income of around 40,000-50,000 yuan.
In recent years, China has seen many homestay booking websites such as Xiaozhu and Tujia. Chen Chi, the founder and CEO of Xiaozhu, said the model is to share rooms or apartments that are not in use with people who need them. Instead of the traditional view that Chinese people feel uncomfortable living with strangers, Chen found that a large number of travellers got along well with house owners.
However, experts have pointed out a series of problems brought about by the fashion. Lacking supervision (监管) to those accommodation sharing websites, the service quality and accommodation safety cannot be guaranteed. Experts suggest that the online websites should closely work together with communities and local police stations to improve the services.
4.What can we learn about homestays from the first paragraph
A.They started in China.
B.They offer the best service.
C.They can be money-saving.
D.They are popular with the youth.
5.What does the underlined word “quit” in the third paragraph mean
A.Taken up. B.Given up.
C.Looked for. D.Gone for.
6.What does Chen Chi think of the sharing model
A.Useless. B.Relaxing.
C.Well-accepted. D.Uncomfortable.
7.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Homestays need to be improved.
B.Some experts don't support homestays.
C.Lacking supervision is the biggest problem of homestays.
D.The police should manage the homestay services.

Traveling to a foreign country can make you frightened if you don't know the local language. Mr Thibault has a number of tips to help travelers manage in a destination when they don't speak the native tongue, based on his own experience. Here are a few of them.
●Download a Language Translation App
Mr Thibault tends to rely on Google Translate and suggests that travelers find an app that works for them. Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you're not familiar with, or have difficulty pronouncing.
●Speak with Your Hands and Head
Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head, Mr Thibault said, are easy ways to communicate with locals in the country you're in. “Gestures are all universally understood,” he said.
●Learn a Few Key Words
Knowing basic words and phrases like “hello”, “thank you” and “I'm sorry, I don't speak your language. Do you speak English?” is a must, Mr Thibault said. Showing that you care enough to learn some of the language before you go, and at least enough to acknowledge that you don't know more, is a form of respect and will go a long way to be liked by locals.
●Work with a Local Travel Agent
If you feel particularly uncomfortable in the country you're headed to, and you have to go anyway, relying on a local travel agent who knows both your and your destination's languages can be incredibly useful.
●Hire a Local Tour Guide
A tour guide can help you get a better grasp of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with. Whenever Mr Thibault visits a new country, he books a sightseeing tour with a guide on the first day of his trip. “I use this day to learn about my destination and get familiar with the language,” he said.
8.In what situation should a language translation app be applied while traveling abroad
A.When you have trouble pronouncing the words.
B.When you want to acknowledge your ignorance.
C.When you want to practice the local language.
D.When you feel uncomfortable in the country.
9.What is the easiest way to communicate with foreigners according to the text
A.Downloading a language translation app.
B.Learning a few key words.
C.Using body language.
D.Working with a guide.
10.How can you better understand the local language
A.By speaking with your hands and head.
B.By learning a few key words.
C.By downloading a language translation app.
D.By hiring a local tour guide.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Most people all over the world travel by the road. In a city in Italy, however, waterways make up the primary commuting routes. The city of Venice is best known for its canals. Unfortunately, this beautiful city of flat-bottomed boats (Gondolas), and churches is sinking and sinking fast.
Known as the “Queen of the Adriatic”, Venice is situated on 120 islands formed by canals between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. And even the bits of firm ground have rather boggy (泥泞的) foundations and all this is slowly getting eroded (腐蚀).
The existing ground water table and the global climate changes that have raised sea levels by several inches, are proving its disaster for the city. As sea-ice melts and water levels rise, floods in Venice are getting from bad to worse. And buildings are already feeling the impact of this phenomenon, with their foundations literally being shaken. Take one of the most famous landmarks of Venice for example, the 900-year-old St. Mark's Basilica, now leans slightly to the left.
Experts warn that the city may sink an additional eight inches in the next 50 years. Many scared residents have already started to move to drier regions in Italy's mainland. To deal with the flood threat, a group of Venetians, called the New Venice Consortium, has come up with “Project Moses”—a dam project named after the biblical figure, Moses. The idea is to place underwater gates at different points where the Adriatic Sea water enters the lagoon (环礁湖). When the water is low, the gates will remain open and as the water rises, the gates will close, preventing the seawater from flooding Venice. However, some people disagree with this idea. Environmentalists point out that the gates would have to remain closed most of the time and seawater will not be able to move in and out of Venice. As a result, the lagoon water will become stagnant (停滞的), harming the fish and plants that live there. Until a viable solution is found out, Venice, it seems, would continue to be threatened by floods. Truly, a case of being caught between the devil and the deep sea!

Dear John,
I've looked at several possible places where I can go on holiday together with my mom. We prefer to go to the South Island in New Zealand because both of us have never been there before. We can explore the forests and walk along the beach, enjoying the natural beauty. We also plan to taste the traditional food.
We plan to take the trip during the first week of October. The 7-day trip costs about 7,000 yuan per person. But my mom only wants to spend 3,000 yuan for each. Anyhow, I think this trip sounds really exciting and my mom likes it very much! Should we book it Any advice Please let me know.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
