Passage A
At noon on a brilliant Tuesday in March, my 12-year-old son Kai and I are a mile and a half into a four-day,27-mile walk through the Grand Canyon - his first backpacking trip- when he asks:“Are we almost to camp ”
Um, no. Camp,at Hermit Creek, is seven miles and nearly 2,500 feet below, which will take us several more hours. We're going down a poorly maintained path off the canyon, across which we can see many of the canyon's layers. This is on display in cliffs hundreds of feet tall, a reminder of how far we have to go.
We are here largely because of a birthday note Kai wrote me two years ago in which he declared, “You used to be a wild 10-year-old like me and now you're a wild 53-year-old. We can do so many things together! I am excited for when Pm old enough for the Grand Canyon!”
There are, I suppose, dads who could resist that, just as there are fathers who would plan an experience-appropriate trip for their sons. I am neither, so here we are. Never mind that; aside from simply being 12, Kai has done almost nothing to physically prepare for this. Or that I haven't backpacked for 13 years.
We head on past twisty trees and brush. Soon the view broadens, and the layers grow deeper, down to the shadowy, 1. 8 billion-year-old Vishnu, a panorama(全景) that leaves Kai excited.“This place is amazing,” he says.
Nightfall in the canyon can be magical. Darkness surrounds us, pressed by cool air. We navigate a narrow path to the stream and, hearing the sound of a waterfall, lie down to take in the stars. Twice I suggest we turn in. “Not yet,” Kai says. “This is too unbelievable. ”

Passage B
When I was young, I lived in a small village in Melaka. The spirit of neighborliness was very
strong then. The village had a variety of trades to serve the needs of the villagers. There was a barber, tailor, coffee shop owner, grocer, and so on. All of us were quite poor but we got by. However, one family which could be considered as living a marginal existence was the Lim family living in the bicycle shop opposite our dwelling.
Mr. Lim, the bicycle mechanic, had a large brood of children-twelve to be exact. My mother
was a kind-hearted soul. Often, she would remark that his children were dressed in ragged clothes and looked malnourished (营养不良的). My family was relatively better off in the village. My parents would bring over whatever food we could spare to the Lim family.
I remember one particular year when times were very hard. Even my family had to make do with two meals a day. We stopped the practice of giving food to Mr. Lim. One day, I noticed my mother looking troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. She decided to sacrifice a portion of our meals to the family despite the protests (抗议) from my brothers that were too hungry. Fortunately, the lean spell ( 困难时期) did not last long, and the children in our family resumed our three meals a day again.
As time went on, the number of customers at Lim’s shop had increased rapidly. Business at his shop took off like a rocket as Japanese bikes were very useful and popular for transport. They were much better off than before.
It was at this time that my father' s health was worsening. We were confused by the mysterious illness he was suffering from. Because of lack of attention to his provision shop (食品店), the business became worse. My father then sold our family car to pay off the mounting bills. My brothers and I had to stop schooling because we could not afford the fees.

Passage C
On the way back from work every evening, there would be a homeless man standing at the exit of the freeway. He looked to be in his late 40's but was probably a lot younger. His eyes were what struck me the most about him, they were brown and they had a sparkle. People say they can tell a lot from a person’s eyes. It was certainly true in his case. He always waved at every car, he was always happy and smiling and sometimes almost dancing.
Every day after work I would remember to gather any spare change and quickly roll down my window and give him the coins. Occasionally the red light would be on for a minute and we would ask each other about our day. His answer would always be the same, “I’m blessed!”. I knew what his answer was going to be every time, yet I would still ask. It amazed me that even in his situation of being homeless he was so positive, and his answer would remind me of how blessed I was. A single mother of four amazing kids, with a place to call home and with a job to provide for my kids.
Then one day I was called into my boss’s office and was told that I was being laid off due to the economy. For the rest of that day, a feeling of worry engulfed(淹没)me. Needless to say that on my way home that day I was very sad and upset. I didn’t remember to look for my spare change and keep it ready like I usually did. But there he was as always, as I turned the ramp(斜坡). He set his eyes on me, while still smiling and waving at others.

Passage D
One day in 2001, when I was eight years old, my family and I were coming back from a baseball game, which was our usual weekend adventure. But unlike other weekends, a surprise was waiting for us. Two adult wild geese and a small wild goose were wandering around our yard. The adults were frightened by us and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly and couldn't follow.
It was freezing cold when night fell. Concerned about the wild goose's safety, we begged dad to protect the little guy. Dad took the tiny little thing to the back porch (门廊) to keep warm and protect him from wild animals. The small wild goose seemed in a panic, unaware of what could happen. The next morning, we try to drive the wild goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, and they wouldn't come close to take him. We kept this up for six days, but no luck. By then, the young wild goose had clearly decided we were his new family. My sister Anna called the little guy Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop. Every time we called his name, he would respond. We also decided that Peeper was a boy, I don’t know why; it just felt right.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months until almost a year passed. Peeper liked to sleep on our back porch each night, and every day my dad would clean up all the goose droppings (鸟兽的粪便) carefully. Dad would throw Peeper up into the air so he could fly a circle around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.

Passage E
Sally had trouble speaking in social situations. I’m a registered nurse and I love kids and dogs. I wanted to use Bella to bring her joy, comfort and confidence the way only a dog can.
That morning in January, her teacher led us to a room by the school office. “Sally hasn’t spoken outside her home in two years,” she told me. “Her parents have taken her to doctors, but nothing has worked.” A little girl stood shyly just inside the doorway. Her eyes brightened when noticing my dog.
“This is Isabella Rose. I call her Bella,” I said. “Would you like to pet her She doesn’t know anyone here and she’d like to meet you. She does tricks. Would you like to see ”
Sally nodded. I motioned with my hand. Bella lay down and then rolled over. Sally’s eyes cheered up. “She’ll do it for you too,” I said. “I can teach you.”
I showed Sally the hand signals for various commands. She was a natural with Bella. Soon Sally was able to take Bella at her pace all on her own. I could see her standing taller, more sure of herself each time we met.
One morning, when she was working with Bella, I heard a tiny voice, barely a whisper: “Good dog.” Sally didn’t take her eyes off Bella, but I wanted to jump for joy. Sally spoke a little more each week, only to Bella at first, but then to me. Later, she started giving voice commands with her hand signals and her confidence rose. Still, she hadn’t spoken in her classroom.
“Could you bring Bella to my class and show the other kids her tricks ” Sally asked me one day. An idea struck me. “Why don’t you do it ” I said. “I know you can. You’re as good with Bella as I am.” Now, Sally stood nervously in front of her kindergarten class, with Bella sitting calmly by her side. Her classmates focused on Sally, waiting for her to speak.

Passage F
By morning, Afiq knew what he had to do. He had not slept a wink but had sat in the balcony all night thinking. He stretched his body and went back to his room. His brother Affin was still asleep.
It was Saturday and there was no school. Afiq's mother asked him to buy some groceries for her. On his way out, he glanced at his motorcycle with the broken front lamp and scratches on the side. Afiq straightened his shoulders and went to complete his purchase.
It was late morning when Afiq was free to carry out his plan. He marched down the road to Osman's house. When he arrived, Aniya appeared at the doorway and greeted him warmly. She invited him in and served him tea and some cakes. Afiq nervously asked to speak to Osman. She told him that her father was out but would be home very soon. Sure enough, the elderly man returned in ten minutes.
Afiq cleared his throat a few times and said that he had come to confess (坦白). “I'm so sorry. I was careless yesterday and knocked into your parked car,” Afiq said. Osman looked at the 17-year-old youth, surprised, “So, you are saying that you are the culprit (肇事者) who crashed into my car and then ran away ” Afiq went red. He nodded, “I'm sorry for not telling you earlier. I was too frightened.”
The elderly man smiled and said, “But you're not too frightened to confess now ”
Afiq said uncertainly, “I could not sleep last night thinking about it. I knew I had to do the right thing.”
Osman was silent for a minute before saying in a kind voice, “Do you think it a right thing to cover up for your brother ”

参考答案及解析
Passage A
The last day’s plan is to travel the three miles to the Colorado River, which is the most challenging. With high wind howling around,we ascend the steep rock and wade the winding stream. It’s almost impossible for a 12-year-old boy to overcome such a harsh condition. To my utter astonishment,he eventually manages to challenge himself to reach the destination and his spirits never sink despite his sore legs and minor bruises. Bathed in the warm sunshine,Kai skips with extreme excitement and shares everything novel with me along the Colorado River.
After the backpacking trip,I also write a note to my son. The note says“It’s not only a physically demanding adventure but also a spiritually rewarding experience. I’m delighted that we are both wild enough and enjoy this lifetime trip.”Although Kai is only an immature boy that may just focus on the gorgeous scenery,I still believe that when he gradually grows up,he will genuinely realize that the adventure imparts the courage and consistent beliefs to him to face the stormy passage.
Passage B
They say that one good deed deserves another. Mr. Lim, our neighbor, came to learn of our plight and stepped in to help. He stated simply that it was his turn to repay the kindness that my parents had shown to him in the past. Through his connections, Mr. Lim arranged for my father to
consult a famous doctor. Not only was this doctor' s diagnosis of my father' s medical condition accurate, but he was also able to cure my father. Besides, he arranged for a loan for my father's business. He also told my brothers and I that we should not give up our education. He then arranged to finance our education as long as we needed it.
With the help of Mr. Lim, the situation in my family took a turn for the better. My father recovered from his illness gradually and his business recovered the next year. My father is now the proud owner of the village mini- market. Mr. Lim has expanded his business too. My brothers and I are among the top students in the school. Whenever my parents met up with Mr. Lim, they would thank him for his past help. He would just shrug off their thanks and say simply that he was merely repaying a kindness. The children in both families have brotherly friendship now. The story between the Lim family and my family has proved a saying that kindness begets kindness.
Passage C
I’d hoped to catch the green light, but I missed it. While I was waiting for the red light to turn, all I could think of was “How can I provide for my kids How can I pay rent What am I going to do ” Just then he strolled over to my car. He had a big smile and looked me straight in the eyes and said “today I will give you a dollar”. He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a dollar bill. I was blown away, bursting into tears.
What he gave me was more than a dollar bill. He taught me a valuable lesson. No matter what material things are taken from you, no one can take away your choice to be joyful. My ride home was smooth sailing. I had lost my job and had no savings, but I knew I was blessed! Every time I’m faced with challenges, I always think of the homeless man’s valuable lesson and remember that I am blessed. Then, I can get up courage to overcome the difficulties and misfortunes.
Passage D
Everyone was very, very sad. We looked for him for days, calling his name, but he didn't come back. We hoped he found a flock and went off on his natural way. Again, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, then years. I missed my little buddy, and I would call for him every time I saw a flock of Canadian geese fly by in V-formation. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory for my family.
At first, I assumed it was just another wild goose. After two weeks, it became clear to me that this wasn't a random wild goose. He did all of the same things Peeper used to, like trying to come in through the front door. In addition to mimicking Peeper's old ways, this wild goose also responded to the name Peeper. Much to my amazement, my old best friend had returned, 20 years later.
Passage E
But not a word came out. Sally had been so excited about putting on a dog show for her class. She had been quite familiar with the hand signals and had practiced for weeks. Now her eyes found mine. I nodded encouragingly. She took a deep breath and opened her mouth. Her mouth---then her whole body—seemed to close in on itself in defeat. Sally stood off to the side, head down. I felt awful. Sally returned to her seat, not looking at anyone, not even Bella.
Paragraph 2:
The next week, she told me she wanted to try again, looking up at me with determination. “Are you sure ” I asked. “You don’t want to wait till next year ” “No,” she said. “Today, I can do it.” Then we headed to Sally’s classroom. The kids were sitting in a circle on the floor listening to the teacher. We walked to the front of the room. I shook Sally’s hands and stepped back. For a few seconds, she stood silently, staring at her classmates. Finally she whispered, “This is Isabella Rose.” Then, a little louder with more confidence, “Isabella Rose.”
