大象是泰国的吉祥动物、国宝，在古代不仅是日常生活中必不可少的重要交通工具，也是战争中国王的坐骑。然而，现今泰国全国野生大象仅存约3000头，人工饲养的大象也只有4000头左右，滥捕大象的问题仍然存在。泰国政府从1998年起，将每年的3月13日定为"大象节"，希望通过"大象节"唤起民众对大象的爱护及对大象文化的传承。
