The first tip for a good day of ice fishing is to wear the right clothes. You should dress in layers. Wear 2 or 3 shirts, so you can take off a layer when you are warm. Wear a face mask, a warm hat with earflaps over your ears, and warm gloves and boots or shoes.
The second tip is to stay warm. Some people put up cloth tents when they go ice fishing. Some people own small ice houses where they can stay warm. You can use a small heater inside the tent or outside on the ice. Be sure to take a hot drink like hot chocolate. You should move around to stay warm. Some people take ice skates.
The third tip is to check the ice. Look at it carefully. The ice must be 4 or more inches thick. This is the ice rule: “Thick and blue, tried and true. Thin and crispy, way too risky.” Thick ice is safe for ice fishing. Thin ice is dangerous.
The fourth tip is to take the right tools. You need to make a hole in the ice with an ice drill (钻). Then make the hole bigger with a cutting tool, like an ax or a knife. You need to carry your bait in a bait bottle, use worms or small fish for bait. You need a chair to sit on. Take a folding chair so you can carry it easily. Be sure to take your fish hooks (钩) and fishing rod (杆)! Pull all your tools on a small case. Take your cell phone. You might need to call for help.
The fifth tip is to have a great time!

Everybody knows vegetables are necessary for us, but the difficulty in growing vegetables is more than you think. Many years ago I moved from the city to the country. One of the first things I did was to make a large vegetable garden. It was hard work to change the grassy area to a fine garden. Imagine how much work it must have been for the early pioneer families to break the native wilderness by hand. I planted a full garden that first year — everything from root vegetables like carrots and beets to green beans, com, tomatoes, zucchini, acorn squash, and melons. A root vegetable means that we eat the root of the plant that grows in the soil instead of the part that grows above the ground.
My best friends Fritz and Heidi, both German shepherd dogs, loved to play out in the country. They enjoyed discovering all the new places where rabbits and deer appeared. A garden was something new to the dogs. At gardening time Heidi preferred to go exploring but Fritz would stay close to me and help.
Once in a while I would find a cucumber (黄瓜) at the side of the garden with dog teeth marks in it. Who do you think tasted the cucumbers Since Heidi didn’t stay near the garden, it must have been Fritz!
One day Fritz went into the garden. He sniffed among the leaves of the melon vines (藤) growing close to the ground. He had discovered ripe (成熟的) melons by their smell, fantastic! Knowing when melons are just right to pick is very hard for humans. But Fritz knew the exact right time to pick each melon in the garden. From then on, Fritz was my best garden helper even if he did sometimes eat the cucumbers.
24. Which of the following vegetables are root crops
A. Tomatoes. B. Green beans.
C. Beets. D. Com.
25. Why did pioneer families have a hard time in gardening
A. Because they didn't know how to plant a garden.
B. Because they had to break up native wilderness.
C. Because here wasn't enough rain at that time.
D. Because their dogs didn't know how to help.
26. We know from the last paragraph that Fritz was ________.
A. clever B. humorous
C. easy-going D. well-rounded
27. Which is the best title for the passage
A. The Best Garden Helper B. How to Grow Vegetables
C. Dogs Are Our Best Neighbors D. How to Train a Good Gardener

A new study of 8, 000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily. it is a bad thing for young people. Puppy love (早恋)may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression (忧郁症). The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.
The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is "loss of self According to the study, even though boys would say "lose themselves in a romantic relationship", this "loss of self is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won't tell that to their parents.
Dr Marian Kaufnian, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.
Parents should watch for signs of depression - eating or mood changes - and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age. Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity (成熟)gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.

A. Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly.
B. Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents.
C. Teachers should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression.
D. The older a woman is. the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance.
31. What’s the author's attitude towards puppy love
A. Confused. B. Disapproving. C. Interested. D. Afraid

根据第二段提到的“The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you must be optimistic(乐观的).(你必须记住的第一件事是,为了成功,你必须乐观)”和第四段提到的“Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity(有创造力)(帮助人们成功的另一个品质是创造力)”可知,下文说到了成功需要乐观和有创造力,论述了成功所需要的品质,即如何成功,结合上文“Some people succeed, while others may not.( 有些人成功了,而另一些人可能不成功。)”可推断承接上文提到的success,此处引出下文的成功的要素,G项中的“this”指代上文的“some people succeed”,且G项中的“some…,others…”
下文“If you do not have an aim, then you will not be motivated to work hard and put your performance under the microscope to make sure that every detail is right.( 如果你没有目标,那么你就不会有动力去努力工作,不能把你的表现放在显微镜下,以确保每一个细节都是正确的)”说明你需要有一个目标,然后就会被激励去付诸努力。
下文“They might be successful with a little creativity, but the most successful people are the most creative ones.( 他们可能会有一点创造力,但最成功的人是最有创造力的人。)”
下文“It will help you learn about how other people have achieved success. If you want to learn how to set up a successful business, you should read books about people like Bill Gates and Jerry Yang.( 它将帮助你了解其他人是如何取得成功的。如果你想学习如何建立一个成功的企业,你应该读一些关于比尔盖茨和杰瑞杨这样的人的书。)”说明你应该读书,说明阅读也是成功的另一要素。故选C。
【40题详解】
上文“Practise every day at whatever career you are in, and by doing so, you will see yourself, your business and your self-confidence begin to grow.( 无论你从事什么职业,每天都要练习,这样你就会看到你自己、你的事业和你的自信开始增长。)” 故选A。
