Julia Morgan was born in 1872 and grew up in Qakland, California. At a time when it was uncommon for women to seek higher education and full- time careers, she became one of the most successful and well-known architects in the United States.
As a child and teenager, Morgan spent most of her time in California, but she also made several trips to New York to visit her extended family. She became close with an older cousin and her cousin’s husband, Pierre LeBrun, who was an architect in New York City. Sensing Morgan’s fascination with engineering and design, LeBrun and his wife encouraged Morgan to continue her education. With her parents’ agreement, Morgan enrolled at the University of California in Berkeley to study civil engineering.
Morgan was the only woman in her engineering program, and she did better than others in her classes. She dreamed of a career in architecture and decided to apply to the Paris School of Fi Arts to continue her studies. Though it took her several years to gain acceptance to this competitive school. she never stopped tying. She was finally admitted and quickly became successful at the institution. In fact, she graduated with her architecture degree in three years instead of the usual five.
Morgan then returned home to California and began her career as an architect in a large design firm, Among her many well-known clients (客户) was newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst. He hired Morgan to design several buildings, including his largest estate, Hearst Castle. During these years, Morgan developed her signature architectural style.
Working for Hearst helped Morgan make name for herself, and she soon had enough clients to open her own architectural practice. Her services were in high demand following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Thanks to her training as an engineer, Morgan understood how to construct buildings that could resist forceful movement in the event of another earthquake.
But the projects dearest to Morgan’s heart were those that encouraged the education of women. She designed a series of buildings for the YWCA, an organization that provided classes and gathering spaces for young women. She also kept an eye on the master plan of Mills College, a women’s college outside of her hometown of Oakland, and contributed six buildings to its campus.
21. What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A. Morgan was the best student at the University of California.
B. Morgan got her architecture degree in five years instead of three.

You are what you eat. This saying has proved scientists with clues about the diet of hominids ---- our early relatives of 3 million years ago.
Studying carbon atoms (碳原子) locked up in tooth - enamel (珐琅质), two researchers argued against the widely held belief that hominids ate little more than fruits and leaves. Sponheimer and Julia Lee - Thorp of the University of Cape Town, South Africa, report their findings in Friday’s Science.
There aren’t many clues for us to know the life of early hominids. The shape of hominids’ teeth offered the first clues. Large and flat - edged with thick enamel, they looked perfect for eating nuts and fruits, different from the sharp teeth one would want to tear into meat with. The first stone tools. which help in eating meat, didn’t appear until about half a million years later.
Scientists have also found marks on hominids ' teeth with patterns very similar to those in the teeth of modern-day fruit-eaters. Sponheimer and Lee-Thorp tried a new method. They studied the enamel for the carbon -13. Animals that eat grasses have higher carbon -13 levels than those eating fruits and other plants.
What they found was that the teeth of the hominids had an in - between amount of carbon-13, which meant not only they were eating fruits, they were eating a lot of grasses, or animals eating grasses. The lower carbon-13 levels could also come from eating certain types of insects,
But there are people who understand differently. Prof. Ungar of the University of Arkansas agrees the study offers new suggestions of hominid - diet, but disagrees about the suggestion that meal could explain the lower carbon -13 levels.
One suggestion might be true, though take good care of your teeth. In 3 million years, scientist might be using them to figure out what you ate for dinner.
24. The underlined word “hominids” means ____.
A. prehistoric animals living only on fruits and leaves
B. creatures that lived in the past, which humans developed from
C. ancient human - like animal never eating fruits and leaves ____.
D. a certain type of insects with an in - between level of carbon -13
25. The two scientist’s finding were mainly based on the study about____.
A. the shape of hominids’ teeth
B. the teeth marks of early fruit eaters
C. the grasses of 3 million years ago
D. the make - up of the teeth enamel
26. What is it that Prof. Ungar finds doubtful
A. Hominids possibly ate grass - eating animals.
B. Hominids probably took good care of their teeth.
C. Hominids were basically fruit and grass - eaters.
D. Meat may explain the lower level of carbon -13.
27. The writer put forward the last suggestion to ____.
A. lead in more eco - topics
B. arouse people’s awareness of dental health
C. to bring some fun to the readers
D. emphasize the importance of what you eat
C
You’ve likely met the humblebrag before ----- boasting (吹噓) in a way of a complaint, such as “I’m having such a worrying day. I got two job offers and I don’t know what to do.”
This is a typical example of humblebragging, a term coined by comedic writer Harris Wittels referring to “a specific type of boast that allows the offender to broadcast their achievements without the necessary shame and guilt that should normally accompany such claims.” In simpler terms, it’s a way to disguise a boast with some humility (谦让). Humblebragging comes in two different forms. The first is humility - based, an example being,"can’t believe I got the highest grade in my class ”. The second type comes mixed with a bit of complaint, for example,"I can’t believe that shopkeeper asked me for ID. I’m 25!”
People don’t like when others humblebrag because they find they are lacking in sincerity. Sincerity is a critical dimension of social evaluation, which is viewed as fundamental to people’s identity. In fact, people prize sincerity even above competence and warmth in others, according to Dr. Sezer.
If humblebragging doesn’t work, and no one likes it, why do we still do it We all want to highlight our positive qualities without seeming proud. By speaking in a complaint or an expression of humility, we hope we’ll somehow land on the “sweet spot" of self - presentation: promoting ourselves while also conveying likability. In addition, research suggests that people may experience positive feelings while humblebragging.
Considering that we’re all likely to feel the urge to humblebrag, at least to some extent, the proper response when we hear a friend doing it may be to simply let it go - because ultimately we’re going to do it ourselves, and who really wants to be called out on it
28.Which of the following remarks is an example of humblebragging
A. How I hate hearing my voice on TV!
B. I’m thrilled to be awarded the first prize.
C. I’m the only person to get promoted in the firm.
D. How I dislike doing the same thing every day!
29. Which can best describe people’s impression of, humblebraggers
A. Honest B. Humble. C. Insincere. D. Incapable.
30. What are people advised to do when hearing humblebragging from a friend
A. Follow it up B. Leave it alone. C. Turn against it D. Get to the root of it.
