读后续写范文:
Paragraph 1:
He took his empty pot to the classroom. Ashamed and anxious, James held his empty pot tightly, his eyes falling on others’ pots with various plants. He took a deep breath, gathered his courage and stepped up to the teacher with great caution, murmuring “sorry” as tears fell from his eyes. A failure holding a pot with nothing inside, James stood there as the other kids laughed at him. The class was eagerly expecting the announcement of the winner when the teacher cleared her throat and declared, “The Excellent Kid is James ”
Paragraph 2:
All the other kids looked at the teacher in surprise. Whispers spread throughout the classroom; the whole class was enveloped in confusion. At that moment, the teacher patted James on the head gently and explained, “Those seeds are all boiled, and they are a test of honesty.” Upon hearing this, most of the kids lowered their heads with shame. It was then that the gloomy mood faded away from James’ heart, and a sweet smile appeared on his face, for James enjoyed being honest.

(Text 10)
The English primarily drank coffee and wine as their main drinks, and tea was
unknown in England till as late as 1662. In 1662 Charles II married Catherine, and it was his new bride who brought a preference for tea with her. She served tea instead of other drinks. Tea soon acquired the position of the royal drink.
However, tea’s acceptance by the British masses was quite slow. It was in the late 1700s that tea began to be popular. One reason which contributed to the popularity of tea was that it was easier to make than coffee. As tea was a high-class drink and it was expensive, the British masses bought second-hand tea leaves. Tea was thus gradually finding a place in British people’s everyday life.
Soon tea began to be sold in London coffee houses. Tea was heavily advertised as a medicinal drink that helped maintain health and beauty. The coffee house owners charged heavily for a cup of tea, as much as 6-10 pounds per cup. The government soon put various taxes, regulations and restrictions on the sales of tea, hoping to earn a profit from the growing tea trend.

Walking through an airport is never easy. Now imagine doing it if you were blind. That’s
the problem faced by Chieko Asakawa, a computer scientist and IBM researcher. Asakawa often
flies between the US and Japan, making the journey monthly. If traveling alone she has to be
helped at both ends of the flight, which sometimes includes endless waiting. Searching for a
better replacement led Asakawa to invent a high-tech suitcase that helps get her to the place she
wants to go safely.
“I never relax when I travel alone,” she says, “I always think about what technology will
help me travel more easily, quickly and comfortably.” It was this restlessness that led to the AI
suitcase.
The idea has been in development since 2017 through research between IBM, other
Japanese companies, and Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. Asakawa says there are
hopes to commercialize the suitcase and a pilot scheme (试验计划) is planned to use it in an
airport, a shopping mall and other public spaces. “Though the suitcase is too full of tech to hold
any clothes, that could change in the future,” she says.
A runner, Asakawa, held Olympic dreams as a child, but a swimming accident at the age of
11 caused her to gradually lose her sight until, aged 14, she became totally blind. As a grown-up
she has paid attention to developing accessibility technology. Among her creations is
“aDesigner”, whose aim is to make designers’ websites more user-friendly, and “IBM Home
Page Reader”, the first voice browser to allow Internet access for blind people. Asakawa has won
industry and government awards and been introduced into the US National Inventors Hall of
Fame.
“The blind people usually use a white cane (手杖) or a guide dog. It will open up many
doors for blind people, because we’d be able to go anywhere by ourselves. Without new
technology, we cannot make our society more inclusive (包容的),” Asakawa says. “A smart
suitcase is a great showcase for how AI and technology can change the lives of the blind.”
24. What drove Asakawa to invent the suitcase
A. The suggestion from an international airport.
B. The wish to finish her trip without any help.
C. The huge business advantages of the suitcase.
第 4 页(共 10 页)
D. The experience of keeping the blind company.
25. What do we learn about the suitcase
A. It can hold clothes. B. It has yet to be widely used.
C. It has proved unhelpful for the blind. D. It is ready to be commercially produced.
26. What does Asakawa think of the suitcase
A. It will encourage more scientists to help the blind.
B. It will make the public care for the blind more.
C. It will hugely free up the blind’s movements.
D. It will change people’s way of traveling.
27. What is the best title for this text
A. Technology Is Changing People’s Lives
B. A Robot Suitcase Makes Traveling Popular
C. Traveling Alone Requires Courage for the Blind
D. A Smart Suitcase Is to Replace Cane for the Blind
C
My dad doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would bake great bread, but he is and he
does. Every Saturday he produces homemade bread. When he’s done, the whole house smells
delicious.
The rest of the week, Dad fixes cars at work. The shop where Dad works is running so well
that he is always occupied. He is under a lot of stress. I think Dad began baking bread to help
him relax.
I’ve been feeling kind of stressed out myself since I found out I didn’t make the school swim
team. Now I’ll have to wait a whole year to try out again. Plus, I’m taking some difficult classes
this year.
I think Dad knew I was feeling bad. Last Saturday he asked me how things were going. I
said OK, even though I didn’t feel OK at all. He looked at me for a moment, and then he said it
was time for me to help. Then he headed to the kitchen.
I followed right behind him. Once we were there, Dad got out his big mixing bowl, handed
me a large wooden spoon, and told me to mix while he added the ingredients. Dad isn’t big on
measuring. He knows how much of each ingredient to use, and the bread always turns out great.
When I finished stirring, Dad showed me how to knead the dough (揉面团). Next came the
most difficult part — doing nothing. We put the dough back into the bowl and then we waited
for more than an hour for the dough to slowly rise and double in size. Next, we divided it into
two and waited for it to rise again. Afterward, we put the dough into pans and waited another
hour for the dough to rise and double.
Dad said the waiting is always the hardest part. “It’s hard to resist putting the dough directly
into the oven, but if you do, the bread will be hard. The most important lesson of all is learning
to be.” Dad taught me more than how to bake bread.
28. What can we learn about the author’s father
第 5 页(共 10 页)
A. He is living a relaxing life. B. He tries his best to make ends meet.
C. He has a special way to deal with stress. D. He is more like a baker than a mechanic.
29. Why is the author feeling stressed
A. School isn’t going well. B. She dislikes making bread.
C. She feels sorry for her father. D. Some classes aren’t worth it.
30. What does the underlined sentence “Dad isn’t big on measuring” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Dad is unskilled. B. Dad dislikes measuring.
C. Dad has a craze for measuring. D. Dad is careful about ingredients.
31. What lesson has the author learned from her dad
A. Never give up. B. Take life easily.
C. Believe in yourself. D. Enjoy time with family.
D
According to the US economist Robert Gordon, all the “impressive stuff” has been created;
we have run out of the big, life-changing ideas needed to encourage rapid economic growth and
engineers are now only just making slight changes. Inventions such as mobile phones, Gordon
says, have had less impact than, for example, the invention of indoor plumbing (管道系统).
But this is a misunderstanding of how engineers work. There is no “Wow!” moment. The
development of new technology happens little by little. You build upon the work of those before
you, thinking about what could be done better and what could be improved. It’s an unending task.
Michael Faraday invented the first electric motor. But Faraday’s breakthrough followed William
Sturgeon’s invention of the electromagnet (电磁铁), and Alessandro Volta’s invention of the
battery before that. Faraday would have expected future engineers to pick up the baton (接力棒)
later down the line.
Reduced energy supplies, increasing populations and mass urbanization keep clever young
engineers awake at night. Those, for example, who enter the yearly James Dyson Award invent
things that solve these problems and more. The 2012 winner Dan Watson designed a clever
system of escape rings for fishing boat nets that deals with the issue of overfishing — not an
exciting topic, but his invention is exceptional. Human inventiveness remains unreduced in the
face of new global challenges.
Our problem is patience. We expect new technology at a rate like never before. I can’t ell
you the world’s next big invention. Last week brought news that we’ve invented a new way to
deal with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Next week may bring a major development in another field.
The biggest thing holding invention back is our impatience. With enough time and support, bright
young engineers will develop exciting new technology to solve the world’s trickiest problems.
Many have already begun.
32. Why does the author mention what Robert Gordon says
A. To introduce the topic. B. To illustrate a new invention.
C. To provide background information. D. To express his opinion about the topic.
33. What can we infer from Michael Faraday’s example
第 6 页(共 10 页)
A. New technology has been developing step by step.
B. New inventions fail to deal with new global challenges.
C. Michael Faraday set a good model for William Sturgeon.
D. Technology helps future engineers achieve success smoothly.
34. What makes Dan Watson’s invention excellent
A. His young age. B. His patience with technology.
C. His effort to solve real world problems. D. His wish to win the James Dyson Award.
35. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to technological development nowadays
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Disapproving. D. Optimistic.

多余选项。
For most people, life has become a burden on their shoulders, and its weight is growing
heavier and heavier, until one day they can’t carry it anymore. So how can we design a life that
is less complex and more meaningful With minimalism (极简主义). 36 The following
ways will assist you in your journey to living a simper yet fuller life.
37 Most people’s living space is filled with things that are never used and don’t
contribute to their well-being. Separate the ones you do need from the ones you don’t, and throw
the latter right into the dustin — or better, give them away to people who might actually benefit
from them.
Appreciate all the amazing things you already have. We constantly compare ourselves to
others who seem happier, more beautiful and more important than us. We try our best to imitate
those we envy. 38 We need to stop comparing and accept ourselves for who we are, with
all our imperfections. Take a moment to appreciate what you have.
Do one thing at a time. Minimalist living actually means making the most out of each and
every moment. We’re usually carrying out different tasks at the same time. So whatever we are
doing, our mind is partly wondering somewhere else. 39
Develop mindfulness. 40 Thus you need to develop mindfulness. Mindfulness
means fully attending to what’s happening in the present. There are many ways one can do so.

Many hospitals employ therapy (治疗) dogs to comfort patients, but at Calais Hospital in
Northern France, a different sort of therapy animal wanders in the halls. Peyo is a 15-year-old
horse who used to compete professionally 56 his trainer Hassen Bouchakour. Now, he’s
comforting patients and family members alike.
“Doctor Peyo”, as he is known to the hospital staff, seems to have a special gift for detecting
57 sick or injured. Bouchalour says that even at competitions, Peyo seemed to seek out
contact specifically with those 58 (struggle) physically or mentally. After a few years of
research, vets believe Peyo’s brain 59 (function) in a unique way.
In the hospital, Peyo goes from door to door in the care center. 60 is no doubt that
Peyo has been fairly effective in reducing the 61 (anxious) of patients as well as their
family members. According to doctors, they knew how 62 (benefit) Peyo’s presence
was when they noticed that patients 63 were regularly interacting with him required
fewer intense drugs. Peyo has stayed with many patients right until the end of their lives.
Animals have an amazing power 64 (comfort) us even during our 65 (hard)

At the beginning of the new term, a teacher at Ringrose Kindergarten decided to do
something different to choose “the Excellent Kid” of this term. One day the teacher brought a
bag of boiled seeds, and then called the kids together, and said, “I am going to give each one of
you a seed today, a very special seed. You are to plant the seed, water it and come back here at
the end of this term with what you have grown from the seed you bring to me, and the one I
choose will be “the Excellent Kid”.
Like the others, a boy named James received a seed. He went home and told his mother the
story excitedly. She helped him get a pot and soil, and he planted the seed. Evert day he would
water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other kids began
to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.
James kept checking his seed, but nothing grew. Four weeks, five weeks went by, still
nothing. By now, others were all talking about their plants, but James didn’t have a plant and he
felt like a failure.
Two months went by, there was still nothing in James’ pot. He just knew he had ruined his
seed. Everyone else had tall plants, but he had nothing. James didn’t say anything. However, he
just kept watering the fertilizing (给……施肥) the soil, expecting the seed to grow.
A term finally went by. All the kids brought their plants to the teacher for inspection. James
told his mother he wasn’t going to take an empty pot. But she encouraged him to go, and to be
honest about what happened. James felt restless because it would be the most embarrassing
moment of his life, but he knew his mother was right.

He took his empty pot to the classroom. _________________________________________
