Mild climate, breathtaking landscapes and beaches draw retirees to Costa Rica. The country readily welcomes immigrants and offers a simple residency process. With a monthly income of at least $ 1,000 per month from Social Security or a similar source, people enjoy a high standard of living at a much lower cost than the U. S.
Malaysia
Retirees who choose to make Malaysia home will appreciate its rich culture and attractive scenery. Moreover, the country offers modern facilities at modest prices. Immigrants enjoy convenience and comfort in their daily life. You will find low-cost rental units, delicious street food, and various shopping malls.
Mexico
Because it’s close to the U. S., Mexico draws more than a million American retirees to its borders. Increasing immigrant communities enjoy seaside living and conversations with friendly English speaking locals. Plus, legal residents over the age of 60 receive airline, grocery, and restaurant discounts.
Panama
Gentle ocean wind takes the heat out of hot year-round temperatures, which has been the chief attraction to foreign retirees. Beautiful beaches and a booming economy also attract retirees to Panama. “Life is about daring to carry out your ideas,” said Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner.
One of the best-known living mountaineers, now 74, Messner became the first person to climb Mount Qomolangma alone and without the help of bottled oxygen (氧气) in 1980.
He also became, in 1986, the first to reach the world’s 14 mountain tops of over 8,000 meters, again without bottled oxygen.
Along the way, he has practiced a special style of mountaineering known as alpinism, in which climbers try to reach the top with as little material (材料) and outside help as possible.
But it is an art that is increasingly getting lost — today’s climbers depend on Sherpas (local guides for climbers in the Himalayas) and ready-made routes to reach the top, Messner said.
“The true alpinist doesn’t want such help. He wants to go into the wild,” he said.
His achievements have made him a great hero, but Messner says he has gotten into plenty of dangerous situations along the way, too.
“Around half of the top alpinists have died climbing,” he said.
“Of course, if I turn back more often than the others, I can increase my chances of survival,” he added. “But if I hadn’t been lucky a few times, I wouldn’t be here.”
Messner later moved on to different challenges (挑战), crossing the Gobi Desert and Antarctica.
He is also a writer and was in Frankfurt to present his latest book, Wild, telling the true story of a 1916 Antarctic expedition (探险).
Today, Messner spends his time making films and talks excitedly about his present one, which is set in Kenya, Africa, and tells the story of two climbers who run into trouble and are faced with life-changing situations.
After a lifetime of following his next dream, he believes film-making will be his final project.
“I was always at my best when I was learning, when I was curious (求知的),” he said.
28. What is special about true alpinists
A. They can reach the top quickly. B. They try to depend on themselves.
C. They follow ready-made routes. D. They often work with local guides.
29. What helped Messner survive dangerous situations
A. Good luck. B. Belief. C. Good skills. D. Courage.
30. What does Messner tell us about the story of his new film
A. It is very interesting. B. It happens in Africa.
C. It is based on his latest book. D. It records his true experiences.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. A new film. B. A new book. C. A great alpinist. D. A great expedition.

Humans have favoured red apples for generations, but rising temperatures could mean the end of a rosy red apple.
The ancestors(祖先) of the modern apple were wild trees growing in what is now Kazakhstan. Today, wild apple trees still grow there, perfuming the air with fallen fruit and feeding the bears that move slowly through the forest, although the wild apples' numbers have become smaller by 90% in the last 50 years due to human development and their future is uncertain.
Apple colour arises from the expression level of certain genes in the skin, scientists have found. Interestingly, colour also depends on temperature. To get an apple that's fully red, temperatures must stay cool, David Change, an expert at Plant and Food Research in New Zealand, explains. As temperatures warm, he suggests, it could become more difficult for apples to turn red.
Colour probably didn't win other features of an apple when growers were evaluating a new tree, however. Instead, they focused on the taste and use for the apple: some are good for cider, some for pies, some for sauce, and some for eating. It didn't much matter exactly what the fruit looked like and whether it looked the same from tree to tree, because farmers were growing fruit for themselves and for their local market, and function mattered more than looks.
Bunker says that all changed about a hundred years ago. The redder apples might not be better than the yellower ones—in fact they might be worse---but, "red sells; that's the problem”.
"It happens to every single apple on the market," says Bedford. "That's just the nature of our desire to have apples the way we want them to look...ever since man has been making choices they've been making them redder and redder. "
32.What's the main idea of the passage
A.Humans have been preferring red apples.
B. Rising temperatures make apples no longer red.
C.The ancestors of modern apple still exist.
D.Growers pay less attention to change the colour of apples.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A. Scientists have found ways to change the colour of apples.
B. Apples will become red in winter because of the low temperature.
C. Apple colour is greatly influenced by temperature.
D. The higher the temperature is , the redder apples will be.
34.Which of the following statements will NOT win the favor of growers
A. The colour of the apple. B.The taste of the apple.
C.The use of the apple. D.The function of the apple.
35.What does Bedford's words mean
A. Every single apple on the market looks nice.
B. We humans desire to change the appearance of apples.
C. Humans have been choosing various apples.
D. Humans in fact prefer the apples which look redder.

“Want to go to the pool tomorrow ” Rosa asked Stephanie during recess(休息). The pool at the YMCA was one of their favorite places, where they learnt and practiced swimming.
Rosa and Stephanie did everything together. They rode the school bus together. They sat together during lunch. They took dance lessons together and they even went to the same summer camp. Their classmates called them “twins”. They were best friends. Most of the time.
Sometimes, though, when Stephanie was with other friends, she ignored Rosa or treated her like a little kid, even though they were the same age. Rosa and Stephanie had played together since they were babies, but sometimes Stephanie didn't act like a friend.
Today was one of those times.
“Sorry. I’m already going to the pool,” Stephanie said. “Toni and Vanessa and I are going.” She gave a broad smile, but in Rosa’s eyes, it wasn’t her nice smile. Saying nothing more, she walked straight away to join Toni and Vanessa, and Rosa was left standing alone, with her face burned and an angry tension coming into her limbs.
After school, at dance class, Stephanie talked and giggled with the other dancers as they stretched in front of the mirror. When Rosa came in, Stephanie didn’t say hello to her, but just another smile. Rosa hesitated for a while about whether she should join them, but she still felt too upset.
Then she noticed Kiara, the new girl. Rosa joined her and began stretching, too. Kiara smiled and Rosa smiled back. The two girls began to talk. Rosa discovered that Kiara was not the quiet girl she had thought she was. Kiara talked a lot — about her little brother, about the tree house her uncle had built and even about swimming. “I love swimming,” Kiara said. “I will hold a pool party at the YMCA. Would you like to come ” “Yes. It’s awesome.” Rosa responded. She tried not to check the mirror to see if Stephanie had noticed. She hoped Stephanie felt left out.
注意:1. 续写词数应为120左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After the dance class, when Rosa got on the bus, Stephanie was waiting in their usual seat.

应用文:
Dear Jenny,
How nice to hear from you! In your letter you asked me how to keep healthy. I would like to give you some advice.
As you know, we teenagers grow very fast, so we need to keep a balanced diet and have nutritious foods, such as fish, meat, and beans, especially fresh vegetables and fruits. You had better not eat too much sweet. Also, you should take physical exercise regularly instead of studying in the classroom all the time. For example, you can play basketball or swim after school. What’s more, having enough sleep is very important. So I advise you to have at least eight hours of sleep every day and not to stay up too late.
Only in this way can you keep fit.
Yours
Li Hua
续写:
After the dance lesson, when Rosa boarded the bus, Stephanie was waiting in their usual seat. Seeing Rosa, Stephanie quickly moved her backpack off the seat to make room for her. But Rosa walked past and slid into the empty seat next to Kiara. They were talking about the pool party when Stephanie went over. “Do you still want to go swimming tonight ” Stephanie asked. “I’m already going,” she said without looking up. “Kiara and I are going together.” Rosa smiled. Stephanie nodded and looked at her feet.
When Rosa saw Stephanie in low spirits, her heart sank. Getting even didn’t feel the way she had expected. She could walk away with her new friend and not look back. But when she saw Stephanie's watery eyes, her heart beat painfully. "Maybe we could all go together.” Rosa said. Stephanie’s face lit up. “I’m sorry for ignoring you. Thank you for your tolerance.” Stephanie said. Rosa gave her a hug and said, “I was too sensitive. Thank you for your tolerance, too.” The two girls smiled at each other, which was their nice smile.
