The first tip for a good day of ice fishing is to wear the right clothes. You should dress in layers. Wear 2 or 3 shirts, so you can take off a layer when you are warm. Wear a face mask, a warm hat with earflaps over your ears, and warm gloves and boots or shoes.
The second tip is to stay warm. Some people put up cloth tents when they go ice fishing. Some people own small ice houses where they can stay warm. You can use a small heater inside the tent or outside on the ice. Be sure to take a hot drink like hot chocolate. You should move around to stay warm. Some people take ice skates.
The third tip is to check the ice. Look at it carefully. The ice must be 4 or more inches thick. This is the ice rule: “Thick and blue, tried and true. Thin and crispy, way too risky.” Thick ice is safe for ice fishing. Thin ice is dangerous.
The fourth tip is to take the right tools. You need to make a hole in the ice with an ice drill (钻). Then make the hole bigger with a cutting tool, like an ax or a knife. You need to carry your bait in a bait bottle, use worms or small fish for bait. You need a chair to sit on. Take a folding chair so you can carry it easily. Be sure to take your fish hooks (钩) and fishing rod (杆)! Pull all your tools on a small case. Take your cell phone. You might need to call for help.
The fifth tip is to have a great time!

When I was in senior high school, I was greatly fond of playing volleyball and thus signed up for the school team whose coach was Mr. Forest. At that time, being skinny was a fashion for all teenage girls. I also had such a dream. Besides training as hard as possible, I reduced my eating amount to an awful degree. Soon I began losing weight, which thrilled me, and I even grew to love the tiredness and light-headedness that came with my poor diet, for those feelings meant that I was winning.
As the season progressed, things became bad between Coach Forest and me. He felt that something was wrong with my health. He talked with me about my eating and was angry that I wouldn’t listen to him when he tried to make me eat. He tried to persuade me in a determined way and so we fought constantly. Then my hunger started to affect my performance. I was so tired that practice and games were becoming a struggle. One afternoon, with deep hurt in his eyes, Coach Forest asked me what I had eaten and I told him nothing at all. He looked at me, disappointment in his eyes, and walked away.
A couple of weeks later I attended a formal dinner for our volleyball team. I stood there as my coach managed to say something nice about me. Then I realized that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful, and I had probably ruined his mood as well. So that evening I wrote him a letter, making a sincere apology and thanking him.
Then one Saturday, as I was in the library, someone gently patted my arm and said softly, “Linda Walter, how are you doing ” I looked up and saw the familiar face. “Thanks for the letter,” he said. “It meant a lot.” When I think of a coach, I think of someone above me, someone who gives instruction, but not a friend. But Coach Forest is different, and, like any other good friend, he dealt with my problem in a determined way even when I hated him for it at that time. I didn’t deserve his kindness, but he selflessly gave it regardless of my terrible attitude. I will forever be grateful for his help, and for his unexpected friendship.
5. When the author ate a poor diet and had a sense of tiredness, how did she feel
A. Anxious. B. Nervous. C. Ashamed. D. Very excited.

A. She felt sorry for eating too little food.
B. She decided to improve her performance.
C. She felt sorry for her being disrespectful and was grateful for Forest’s care.
D. She wanted to build a closer relationship with Forest.
8. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. My Apology to My Coach B. Unexpected Friendship
C. A Strict Volleyball Coach D. A Fight Between My Coach and Me

We have to admit that reading is not a pleasant thing at school. Reading is not based on a child's interests, but to cope with tests. When children are little we make them read aloud, before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they "know" all the words they are reading. This means that when they don't know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously.
One day, I said to them, "Now, I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for fun. I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not to ask you what words mean. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, that's enough for me."
The children sat shocked and silent. Was this a teacher talking One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously, "Mr. Holt, do you really mean that " I said just as seriously, "I mean every word of it."
Later, she really astonished me. One day, she was reading at her desk. From a glimpse of the illustrations I thought she was reading Moby Dick(白鲸).I said, "Don't you find parts of it rather heavy going " She answered, "Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part.”
This is exactly what reading should be. Let the students make their own decisions, find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it and go on to something else.
9. What did the teacher tell his students to read for
A. For pleasure. B. For knowledge.
C. For a larger vocabulary. D. For higher scores in exams.
10. On hearing the teacher's talk, how did the children probably feel
A. Stupid. B. Unreasonable.
C. Understandable. D. Too good to be true.
11. What can we learn from the girl
A. She skipped over those easy parts while reading.
B. She turned out to be a top student through reading.
C. She had a hard time finishing the required reading tasks.
D. She learned to appreciate some parts of the difficult books.
12. What is the teacher's point of view in the passage
A. Reading requires teachers' guidance.
B. Reading helps students do well in school.
C. Children should be left to decide what to read.
D. Children can not tell good parts from bad ones.

When you’re off to the market, what food do you put in your cart they just had to put the turtles at top priority when they were at a local market in Papua New Guinea. They’re not planning to cook a sea turtle soup. The two stepped up to rescue the poor animals from any locals with a taste for their meat.
Through the years, biologists have seen a drop in the sea turtle population in Papua New Guinea. Until today, the sea turtles are under threat from locals who eat their eggs and meat. Ocean pollution also plays a huge factor in the survival rate. In the face of climate change and human activities, scientists were able to see and understand how these two factors affect the numbers of endangered turtles. Despite all that, turtling is still legal in some countries such as Papua New Guinea, Mexico and Australia.
When Culling and his colleague realized the fate of the two turtles in the food market, they did not hesitate and bought the sea turtles for $50. They also did not waste another second and drove for more than 3 miles and freed the turtles into the ocean.
The most amazing thing about this story is that it wasn’t Culling’s first time to be a hero for the turtles. He and his team have done this several times. They were able to rescue ten turtles from the food market so far, giving them another chance for life. Culling did the right thing in rescuing the two sea turtles from the food market. Imagine how many offsprings (后代) those two would have, now that they’re back at home.
13. What does the underlined phrase “at top priority” probably mean in the first paragraph
A. Within the reach. B. Into practice.
C. Into first consideration. D. Out of control.
14. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The drop rate of turtle population.
B. Factors in the drop of turtle population.
C. The numbers of endangered turtles.
D. The turtling condition in some countries.
15. What did Arron Culling and Mark do with the two sea turtles
A. Raised them legally at home. B. Bought them at a high price
C. Cooked them for soup. D. Sent them back to the sea.
16. Which of the following can best describe Arron Culling and Mark
A. Wise and outgoing. B. Curious and professional.
C. Responsible and inspiring. D. Graceful and impressive.
