Choosing What to Study
Choosing the right course is important to enjoying your time at university so make sure you really explore your options. Your degree course will run for three or more years and your workload will feel much lighter if you truly love your course.
A favourite subject
Having a clear favourite might make this decision seem easy but do still check out the structure and content of the course and consider how these might differ from other universities you are applying to. Subjects at degree level can be quite different from studying them at school.
Two or even three combined
Oxford offers a wide range of joint (联合的)courses which give students the chance to explore different subjects and examine the connections between them. There tend to be fewer places on our joint courses but this is not always the case. A few subjects are only available as part of a joint course, for example Philosophy or Economics.
Something new
Don't forget to check out our courses not normally available at school, for example Archaeology and Anthropology, Biochemistry, Human Sciences and Materials Science. They are the perfect opportunity to explore aspects of your favourite subjects in an exciting and new way.
A-level subjects
Some of our courses require applicants to achieve certain grades in specific subjects in order to meet the admission requirements. The subjects you choose at A-level can therefore have an impact on whether you can apply for a specific course. While we generally recommend that students take those school subjects which they enjoy the most, you should check our subject requirements to make sure you are qualified.
Course assessment (评价)
Most of our degrees are assessed primarily by written examination and essay. These exams are typically divided between First (known as 'Prelims' or ’Mods') and Final University exams (Finals). At Oxford your results in your Finals determine your class of degree.
21.What can we know about the joint courses
A.They have very special structures and contents.
B.They provide students with an exciting way of learning.
C.They enable students to explore connections between subjects.
D.They require students to achieve certain grades in some subjects.
22.Which of the following courses is not always available
A. Biochemistry. B. Science. C. Philosophy. D. Economics.
23.What should Henry do if he wants to get a first-class degree at Oxford
A. Be active in class. B. Write a perfect essay.
C. Do well in the Prelims. D. Get high scores in the Finals.

Washington is home to lots of trees—it is the Evergreen State, after all—and lots of fireplaces and wood-burning stoves too. But what if you lived there and couldn't chop (劈) wood or couldn't afford to pay someone to do it Luckily, Shane McDaniel and his twin sons are happy to lend an ax. The three men chop truckloads of wood—then donate it to those in need.
The idea started as a father-son bonding project. "I had to cut wood with my dad. He just loved doing it," said Shane. He wanted to pass along that feeling, so he and the twins spent the summer chopping wood. The result was a great wall of wood piled up around their house, which is worth about $10,000.
It was too much for the Mc-Daniels to use themselves, and when the weather turned cold that November, Shane started thinking of others. He posted on the Internet: "IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF FIREWOOD AND CANNOT AFFORD IT, PLEASE CONTACT ME! ... If you know someone who NEEDS WOOD, and they're looking at a cold house, please help us help them. Please help us make sure NO ONE GOES COLD IN OUR HOOD."
The response was immediate. One man offered to donate a wood-burning furnace. Others raced over to Norm's, the mini-mart Shane owns, with more wood for the pile.
Single mom Katelyn Ticer and her four-year-old daughter rely on a wood-burning stove as their only source of heat, so it was a relief to receive a truckload of firewood from the McDaniels before the holidays. “To get that much wood brought me to tears,” she said. “So much stress and anxiety is off my shoulders. I couldn't be more thankful.”
However, not every recipient is grateful, and some aren't even friendly. But Shane is OK with that. "Giving is the reward,” he says. “It has nothing to do with how well it's received; it's about how much it's needed.”
24.Why did Shane start chopping wood
A.He wanted to teach his sons a living skill.
B.He wanted to kill the boring summer time.
C.He was inspired by a childhood experience.
D.He planned to make more money through this.
25.Why is Katelyn Tice mentioned in paragraph 5
A.To prove the great value of Shane's donation.
B.To tell there are lots of people in need of wood.
C.To describe how cold winter makes people suffer.
D.To show the people helped by Shane are really poor.
26.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Shane doesn't want people to thank him.
B.Every person helped by Shane is thankful.
C.Shane feels unhappy when people are unfriendly.
D.Shane thinks it's rewarding to make the donation.
27.Which of the following words best describe Shane
A. Positive and energetic. B. Caring and generous.
C. Reliable and friendly. D. Warm-hearted and humorous.

With Chengdu as its station of origin and Lodz its terminal, the Chengdu-Europe Express Railway helps to build business links between the two cities. It also connects a Polish man's heart to Chengdu.
The 29-year-old Maciej Czastka comes from Lodz, Poland. He has been in Chengdu for four years since he finished his degree in East Asia relations at the University of Lodz.
"I was always hoping to visit China after graduation because of my major. I knew at that time that a cross-continental cargo train would leave from Lodz so I wanted to visit its other end," said Maciej.
After graduation, he applied to Sichuan University for language study. He now works for Amber Global Consulting, a company that provides services to Polish manufacturers and merchants to help them enter the Chinese market.
During his four-year life in Chengdu, Maciej witnessed the opening of the Chengdu-Europe Express Railway, the friendly city relations established between Chengdu and Lodz and the booming business between the two cities.
"We used to have little contact with China, and Poland itself lacks experience with exports. Now Chengdu is a well-known city in Poland and a growing number of enterprises in both countries can have direct trade with each other thanks to the Chengdu-Europe Express Railway." said Maciej.
“The express is important to the communication and cooperation between Poland and Chengdu. Both cities are now in their golden age of developments,” he added.
“For quite a long time we Polish could not overcome the geographic inconvenience of being in the middle of Germany and Russia. The Belt and Road changed that, turning our disadvantage into an advantage.”
Now the Chengdu-Europe Express Railway has been operating for four years, supporting its two ends, Chengdu and Lodz, to extend their trade and business further. As the doorway to Europe, Poland is seizing opportunities brought by the Belt and Road and engaging in the globalization of economy and trade.
28.How old was Maciej Czastka when he graduated from Lodz University

Known for its skyscrapers and megamalls, Singapore is perhaps not so well-known for its abundance of trees. But according to a new study, it ranks top in the world for urban tree density (密度).
According to the study, almost 30% of the city-state is covered by trees, which is nearly 4% more than joint second-place cities Sydney, Australia and Vancouver, Canada. The study was completed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the World Economic Forum (WEF) and has measured the urban green canopy (天蓬似的树荫)of 17 key cities around the world using Google Street View data. Of the 17 cities, Paris has the fewest trees with only 8.8% of its urban area covered by greenery. “The green canopy is an important and integral part of urban life. Trees help mitigate extreme temperatures, provide a natural relief from traffic jam and noise, and improve the quality of life for those living in urban environments,”says Treepedia, the website which hosts the findings of the study. The project has the aim of encouraging city planners and residents to do more to promote greenery in their cities.
Nicknamed the City in a Garden, Singapore’s top place spot is no surprise. Parks such as the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, the Botanic Gardens and the newer Gardens by the Bay super park — home to around 400,000 plants—have no doubt contributed to its winning place. The city also has a considerable number of roof gardens and “skyrise” greenery on the front wall of buildings—in fact this type of greenery alone has increased from 61 hectares in 2013 to 72 hectares in 2015. Singapore’s National Parks Board also manages around two million individual trees along streets, and in parks.
32.Which of the following cites have the least urban green canopy
A.Sydney. B. Vancouver. C. Paris. D. Singapore.
33.What does the underlined word "mitigate" in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. decrease B. take C. record D. measure
34.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.Why Singapore is so green. B.The architecture in Singapore.
C.How Singaporeans plant trees. D.The amazing parks in Singapore.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.Green City, Green Life
B.How to Make a City Greener
C.A Study on Green Cities in the World
D.Singapore, the Greenest City in the World

However, many of these differences in character can 63 (explain)by differences between the brains of men and women. For example, a study 64 (lead)by a British psychologist in 2012 found men's brains are, on average, 10 percent bigger than women's brains. But Lise Eliot, a professor at 65 Medical School of Chicago University, doesn't think the brain differences can explain personal features. She found that the brain differences mean nothing.
So, if it's not in the brain, what is it that makes males and females behave 66 (different) The answer may lie in socialization. Text 10
W:Today, more and more people are choosing to learn a new language. My dear elassmates, you may want to learn Spanish. But how
First, learn a few basic Spanish sentences. If you know how to say hello and goodbye, as well as ask some simple questions, you'll be able to have a short conversation with anyone in Spanish. That's what my friend Bob can do now.
Second, listen to music in Spanish. Listening to Spanish songs is a good way to get used to (习惯) the way Spanish sounds, and the songs will help you learn words more quickly. Choose slower music so you can more easily understand the words. That's what my friend. Sara often does.
Third, watch Spanish movies and TV shows. Spanish movies and TV shows can be helpful in learning the language quickly. You can find Spanish programs online for free. That's what my brother Sam is doing.
Fourth, read Spanish books. Start with children's books, which are written using simpler language and are designed to (目的是) help children learn the language. If you read books you have already known pretty well, it will help you get used to the language faster. That's what I like doing.
