A Survivor’s Story: 7 Things I Learned from Teen Depression
Depression in children and teens is on the rise, a heartbreaking trend that cuts across all demographics(人口统计数据)—rich and poor, rural and urban. According to Mental Health America, a staggering one in five young people suffers from depression, which can lead to academic failure, substance abuse, and suicide. Depression is often mistaken for normal teen anxiety; caring and well-meaning caregivers often miss the warning signs, especially in kids who appear to be thriving.
Sam didn’t seem like the kind of kid who could be depressed. On the outside, everything about her life appeared wonderful, almost idyllic(完美无瑕的). She was raised in a wealthy suburb of Boston by a supportive family with a great circle of friends, and was known as a hardworking student and talented athlete. Athletics were more than extracurricular activities for Sam—they were a large part of her identity.
But in her sophomore(大学或高中的二年级学生)year, her life began to unravel(崩溃). Sam suffered a series of injuries that prevented her from participating in sports. The void(空虚) left by the activities that once gave her a sense of belonging set off a chain reaction that would change the course of her life. Sam was going through personal anxiety on the inside while trying to maintain the appearance that everything was okay. Normally social and outgoing, she began to isolate herself for weeks at a time. For her mom, the news of Sam’s self-harming behaviors and emotional struggle came out of nowhere. Looking back, her mom realized that Sam’s behaviors clearly demonstrated that her daughter had been suffering from depression.
Finding a path to wellness
After learning what was going on, her mother called Sam’s pediatrician(儿科医生), who encouraged her to take Sam to the emergency room. After that first visit to the ER, Sam experienced multiple hospitalizations for mental health treatment, but continued to struggle emotionally. Finally, she was referred to a mental health program for crisis stabilization, assessment, and treatment.
During her six-week hospitalization, Franciscan Children’s clinicians helped Sam learn how to understand and be mindful of her feelings. She was taught how to use simple coping mechanisms to help manage her thoughts. By taking the time to be self-reflective, Sam began to uncover the roots of her feelings and discover different ways to cope. By the time Sam was ready to transition home, she had a new confidence in herself that helped her identify herself as the strong person she is today.
Transitioning back to day-to-day life after her hospital stay wasn’t easy. Adapting to new routines was challenging for both Sam and her family as they worked together to integrate the coping skills she had learned. To ease her transition back into her community, the case managers at Franciscan Children’s worked in coordination with Sam’s family and school to place her in a day program where she continued to receive the treatment and support she needed to be successful while living at home. Her recovery wasn’t a linear process, but a series of cyclical improvements.
Today, Sam is a happy and healthy college student at a small New England college. Majoring in psychology, Sam plans to get her master’s degree in social work so that she can help other kids successfully navigate the challenges of mental illness the way she was helped at Franciscan Children’s.
Now that she’s on the other side of her journey, Sam has learned invaluable lessons about getting better. Her greatest pieces of advice for parents navigating a child’s mental health struggle are to let your child know that you are there for them no matter what and that they can ask you for whatever they need. Reassure them that you will get through this together. Start conversations, let them talk, and just listen.
Reflecting personally on what she wishes she knew during her own battle, here are seven things Sam would tell her younger self and, by extension, all of the other children and teens suffering from depression:
1. You are not alone. There are many more people than you can imagine who have been down the same road and are now living healthy and happy lives.
2. Being strong isn’t determined by being able to help yourself, but in being able to ask for help from people you feel you can trust.
3. The path to recovery is not always smooth or direct and will take time.
4. Your feelings are real; don’t let anyone tell you they aren’t. Even if you can’t see what’s hurting you, it doesn’t mean that something isn’t wrong.
5. This is your recovery and you only have to share what you feel comfortable sharing with those around you. Your friends are there to listen, but it isn’t their job to provide treatment.
6. Give your family time to process the news about what you’re going through. Your parents won’t have all the answers or even know what to say right away – give them time.
7. It’s important to realize that some days will be better than others.

5 Ways to Combat Bad Moods and Mild Depression
Some people define happiness as the absence of bad emotions. It’s that relaxing moment where you are worried about nothing and where you are not feeling bad because of any major problems that could act as a barrier to your happiness.
Luckily most bad moods and even mild depression attacks can be dealt with if people knew the right actions to take. Most people deal with bad moods incorrectly by either escaping from them or by acting as if they are not there while in fact bad moods are just signals sent by the brain to motivate people to improve their lives in certain ways.
In this post I will tell you how to respond to the signal and end these bad moods:
5 ways to combat bad moods and depression
1) Do something! : Taking serious actions is one of the most powerful ways for ending bad moods and depression. Most people lie in bed when they feel bad without being aware of the fact that this is the time where they need to take actions the most. When you take actions you actually tell your brain that are responding to the signal that it sent you and that’s why the bad mood eases.
2) Learn how to live consciously: if at any moment of your life you were worried about your future or sad because of your past then you will never be able to experience real happiness. Conscious living is the ability to enjoy your present moment without letting your mind wander in the past or the future. People who live in the present moment are less vulnerable to bad moods and depression attacks.
3) Write a plan: sometimes your mind needs nothing more than reassurance in order to remove the bad mood. In such a case writing a plan might be the perfect solution to bad mood. When you write a plan you are actually telling your subconscious mind indirectly that you are going to solve the problems that are bothering you and as a result it withdraws the bad mood.
4) Get more self understanding: sometimes people get bad moos because they don’t understand themselves well. When you get to understand yourself more you will realize what makes you happy and what makes you sad. Many people are unhappy just because they don’t quite understand what can make them happy and what’s important for them in life.
5) Understand that bad moods might not disappear overnight: many people mistakenly believe that bad moods should disappear overnight if they did the right thing but that’s completely wrong. Even if you started solving the main problem that caused your bad mood still your mood won’t change instantly but instead it will happen gradually as the time passes. Its extremely important to be patient while trying to end your bad moods else you will give up before a significant change happens and your mood will remain the same.

4) Get more self understanding: sometimes people get bad moos because they don’t understand themselves well.
