With paper flowers and music hanging around in the air, Lu Jun was hosting a small farewell ceremony at an industrial zone in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. It was a funeral for a pet dog. Lu came up with the idea of becoming a pet mortician(殡葬师)four years ago when he was preparing to start a business.
“At that time, there was only one business that provided funeral services for pets in Shenzhen, but hundreds of pets die every day in this city,” he said. According to Lu, many pet owners used to bury the remains of their beloved animals near their homes, which had a harmful impact on the environment and created the risk of spreading disease.
He saw a gap in the market for someone able to properly handle the death of pets. “A pet funeral service provides treatment of the bodies that is harm-free, and it is the greatest comfort to pet owners,” Lu said.
He takes good care of the remains of the pets and tidies up their appearance before the funeral. In addition, he prepares funeral addresses and selects suitable tombs for the pets. He also films funerals for owners who cannot attend the ceremonies, and provides paper and pens for those who want to write down their blessings and hang the notes on the wishing tree.
Over the past four years, Lu has bid farewell to more than 2,000 dogs, cats and other kinds of animals. He also does volunteer work in his spare time to promote responsible dog raising. “The pet funeral service industry is still in its babyhood, and I hope there will be a set of strict standards for people who take on this job and a better environment for the industry,” Lu said.

A. He delivers speeches to mourn the pets.
B. He gives best wishes to the pets’ owners.
C. He makes films of the pets for their birth.
D. He nurses and cares for the pets carefully.
26. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Lu volunteers to raise pets on his own.
B. The pet funeral service has got a big success.
C. More strict standards should be set for pets’ owners.
D. There remains a potential in the pet funeral industry.
27. From which is the text probably taken
A. A research report.
B. An advertisement.

Almost every day we come across situations in which we have to make decisions one way or another. Choice, we are given to believe, is a right. But for a good many people in the world, in rich and poor countries, choice is a luxury, something wonderful but hard to get, not a right. And for those who think they are exercising their right to make choices, the whole system is merely an illusion, a false idea created by companies and advertiser, hoping to sell their products.
The endless choice gives birth to anxiety in people’s lives. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of everyday goods leads to a sense of powerlessness in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away, or just buying an unsuitable item that is not really wanted. Recent studies in England have shown that many electrical goods bought in almost every family are not really needed. More difficult decision-making is then either avoided or trusted into the hands of the professionals, lifestyle instructors, or advisors.
It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed at which new types of products come on the market. Advances in design and production help quicken the process. Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The typical example is smart phones, which are almost out-of-date once they are bought. This indeed makes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just walk with ease into a shop and buy one thing; no choice, no anxiety.
28. What does the author try to argue in Paragraph 1
A. The exercise of rights is a luxury.
B. The practice of choice is difficult.
C. The right of choice is given but at a price.
D. Choice and right exist at the same time.
29. Why do more choices of goods give rise to anxiety
A. Professionals find it hard to decide on a suitable product.
B. People are likely to find themselves overcome by business persuasion.
C. Shoppers may find themselves lost in the broad range of items.
D. Companies and advertisers are often misleading about the rage of choice.
30. What does the author want to prove by using smart phones as an example
A. Advanced products meet the needs of people.
B. Products of the latest design flood the market.
C. Competitions are fierce in high-tech industry.
D. Everyday goods need to be replaced often.
31. What is this passage mainly about
A. The helplessness in purchasing decisions.
B. The variety of choices in modern society.
C. The opinions on people’s right in different countries.
D. The problems about the availability of everyday goods.
D
Tree planting used to be regarded as an effective means of controlling climate change. Perhaps it’s time for us to rethink this practice. Trees pull carbon dioxide or CO2 from the air. This effectively removes CO2 from the atmosphere, making trees an important part of the fight against climate change. But trees only hold onto carbon dioxide as long as they’re alive. Once they die, trees decay and release that CO2 back into the atmosphere.
Recent studies have found that trees around the world are growing faster than ever. Rising atmosphere CO2 is probably driving that rapid growth, said Roel Brienen. High levels of this gas are boosting temperatures, which in turn speeds tree growth in those areas, he added. The faster tees grow, the faster they store carbon. It seems like good news. However, it is known that fast-growing tree species, in general, live shorter lives than their slow-growing relatives.
In order to see whether this is a universal phenomenon, Brienen and his colleagues analyzed over 210,000 individual tree ring records of 110 tree species from more than 70,000 sites worldwide. “By measuring tree rings’ widths, one can tell how fast trees grew, while counting rings provides information on tree ages and allows making inferences about trees’ maximum lifespan(寿命).” Brienen explained.
The team also created a computer program that modeled a forest. Early on, it showed that “the forest could hold more carbon as the trees grew faster”, Brienen reported. But after 20 years, these trees stared dying and losing this extra carbon again. “We must understand that the only solution to bring down CO2 levels is to stop emitting(排放)it into the atmosphere,” said Brienen.
32. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. Where carbon dioxide or CO2 is.
B. Whether trees will be planted or not.
C. Why the atmosphere can remove carbon dioxide.
D. Why trees against climate change should be rethought.
33. Which word can replace the underlined one in paragraph 1
A. decline.
B. decompose.
C. decrease.
D. deconstruct.
33. Why are trees growing faster than ever according to recent studies
A. They give off and store lots of CO2.
B. They belong to fast-growing species.
C. Rising atmospheric CO2 may help them.
D. The surrounding trees may affect them.
35. What might be talked about in the following paragraph
A. How to make the old trees live a little longer.
B. Why the team founded the computer program.
C. Why the faster trees grow, the longer they live.
D. How to deal with dying trees emitting their extra carbon.

M: No. I really don’t. I just can’t imagine myself managing a staff and worrying about finances. I can’t handle pressure well.
W: You know, that’s not the impression I have of you at all. That’s how I’d describe myself.
(Text 10)
It’s okay if you don’t know what you want to do yet, but plan ahead for college—it just makes sense. Why is college a good idea Because education is the key to your future. It provides knowledge and skills that you can use for the rest of your life. Education can help you get and keep your dream job. Here are more reasons why education will be an important part of your future:
The more you know, the better you understand the world around you.
The more educated you are, the more choices you have about what to do with your life.
The more years of school you attend, the more money you are likely to make.
There are many opportunities for education beyond high school, including state and private colleges and universities, local community colleges, and technical schools. Think about what is available and what is right for you.
