My mother is a teacher, and I grew up with the challenges (挑战) a teacher faces. I often asked her, “Why do you teach What keeps you teaching ” The answer was always the same. “There is always that one child, that one moment that is worth it.”
Now, I am a teacher, too. But different from my mother, I teach students challenging activities outdoors. And when my mother asked me the similar questions, my answer was, “It’s that one child, that one special moment.”
One of those moments happened recently. I was working with a group of girls in a four-week programme. Everything went on well through the “Team” events and we were moving on to a “High” one called the wire(钢索)Walk.
In the Wire Walk, each girl had to climb up the pegs(木桩)in a tree to a wire, 8 meters high, and then walk across it. Of course, everything was safe for sure.
When I asked who would try, a few girls raised their hands, and they finished the Wire Walk with little difficulty.
But when it was Susie’s turn, it seemed that she didn’t really want to. I asked Susie if she was ready. She Answered softy, “I suppose.”
Now, Susie was at the foot of the tree. She started to make the long reach for the first peg. The other girls cheered for her. Then I found Susie was becoming nervous with every step. I realized she would not go much further.
Susie was halfway up. Then she stopped and held the tree tight(紧紧地), looking very afraid. Her eyes were closed. With her face against the tree, she cried, “I can’t.”
The other girls sat in silence. I talked quietly to Susie, trying to relax her. I talked for a long time till I ran out of words.
“I will still be your friend no matter what, Susie!” Mary broke the silence.
To my surprise, Susie lifted her head and looked up to the wire. Then she turned to look down at Mary and smiled. Mary smiled back.
Finally, Susie made it all the way across that wire. When she returned to the ground, the first hug she looked for was from Mary. We all cheered. Moments like this keep me doing what I do. The young hearts continue to fill me with courage.
24. Susie stopped halfway up to the wire because ________.
A. the teacher asked her to do it
B. something was wrong with it
C. she was too afraid to move on
D. it was too high for her to reach
25. Mary broke the silence in order to ________.

26. From the story of Susie and Mary, we can learn that ________.

B. a word of encouragement matters a lot
C. outdoor activities bring people closer than ever
D. a good method plays an important role in teaching
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. That One Moment B. The Wire Walk
C. Love and Courage D. The Young Hearts

Your teenage best friend could be good for your long-term mental health, according to a new study published in the journal Child Development. According to the findings, teenagers aged 15 to 16 who had a close friendship rather than a larger group of friends they were less close to had a greater sense of self-worth by the time they were 25 years old. Those people with a very close best friend were also less likely to experience depression and social anxiety, the study found. “Close friendship strength in mid-adolescence predicted relative increases in self-worth and decreases in anxiety and depressive symptoms by early adulthood,” the authors, led by Rachel K, Narr, a postdoctoral student focused on clinical psychology at the University of Virginia, wrote.
A past research has suggested that adolescent friendships are important. Friendships during the teenage years predict academic success and improved mental health. But the new research further explores the type of friendships teenagers have. “My hunch(预感)was that close friendships compared to broader friendship groups and popularity may not function the same way,” Narr told Quartz. “Being successful in one is not the same as being successful in the other.” Many study participants did not continue to have a close relationship with their high-school best friend, leading the researchers to wonder what exactly was responsible for the mental health benefits. They suspected that the skills and ability to build such a friendship may be more important than the friendship itself.
And as the researchers point out, those skills are not necessarily brought to bear in the world of social media. “As technology makes it increasingly easy to build a social network of shallow friends, focusing time and attention on developing close connections with a few individuals should be a priority,” study co-author Joseph Allen said in a statement.
What is the benefit of having a close teenage friendship
A. Excellent performance in high school.
B. A larger group of friends.
C. Mental health by early adulthood.
D. A large social network in the future.
29. What can we learn about the past research
A. It attached great significance to adolescent friendships.
B. It was totally different from the new research.
C. It helped improve teenagers' mental health.
D. It compared broader friendship groups with popularity.
30. What did the researchers think might lead to the mental health benefits
A. Not continuing to have a close relationship.
B. Having a best friend in high school.
C. Understanding the world of social media.
D. Knowing how to build a close friendship
31. What did the researcher Joseph suggest
A. Learning to use social media.
B. Broadening your social circle.
C. Improving the skills of making friends.
D. Concentrating on high-quality relationship.

A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small, desert-like island. The two survivors who have been good friends, not knowing what else to do, agreed that they had no other recourse but to pray to God.
However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.
The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the land, and he was able to eat its fruit. The other man’s parcel of land remained barren.
After a week, the first man was lonely and he decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked, and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the land. On the other side of the island, there was nothing.
Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes, more food. The next day, like magic, all of these were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing.
Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that he and his wife could leave the island, and in the morning he found a ship docked at his side of the island.
The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island, considering the other man unworthy to receive God’s blessings since none of his prayers had been answered.
As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from heaven booming, “Why are you leaving your companion on the island ”
“My blessings are mine alone since I was the one who prayed for them,” the first man answered. “His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve anything.”
“You are mistaken!” the voice rebuked him. “He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.”
“Tell me,” the first man asked the voice, “What did he pray for that I should owe him anything ”
“He prayed that all your prayers be answered .”
For all we know, our blessings are not the fruits of our prayers alone, but those of another praying for us. So what you do for others is more important than what you do for yourself.
32. The first man’s wife is_______.
A. a swimmer who got to the island by accident
B. an angel sent by God to keep him company
C. a survivor from another wrecked ship
D. a native person on the desert-like island
33. The underlined word “barren” in Paragraph 3 is closed in meaning to______.
A. isolated B. unproductive C. fertile D. dry
34. Which of the following is true about the second man
He didn't deserve any blessing from God.
B. None of his prayers was answered by God.
C. He is not brave enough to tell God his needs.
D. His prayer helped his companion get out of trouble.
35. What’s the moral of the story
A. Never judge a person by appearance.
B. Don't lose heart in trouble.
C. Helping others is helping ourselves.
D. Greed is the root of all evil.

Time to give thanks
When it comes to Thanksgiving, turkey may be the first thing that comes to mind. It’s the right picture, but it’s not complete.
Celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year, Thanksgiving Day is a time for communal thanksgiving and lavish feasts. 36
Americans celebrate Thanksgiving with much enthusiasm and maintain many traditional customs. Here we introduce a few of the rituals Americans typically follow on this day.
Thanksgiving Day has been associated with communal prayers in church and in homes for centuries. Attending church prayer services in the morning is the first step of many celebrators on Thanksgiving Day. 37
Before Thanksgiving meals, some families gather together and read prayers to thank God for his kindness and the gifts he has bestowed upon them in the form of friends and family. 38
Like China's Spring Festival, preparing a big meal and bringing the family together at home is a long-standing tradition of Thanksgiving. 39
40 Though there is no evidence to prove that turkey was eaten during the first Thanksgiving dinner, most people agree that the dinner would be incomplete without it. A survey conducted by the US’ National Turkey Federation in 2015 shows that 91 percent of Americans eat turkey and more than 306 million kilograms of turkey are consumed on Thanksgiving Day.
It is a time for everyone to celebrate it.
Undoubtedly, turkey is the main course of Thanksgiving dinner.
Americans crowd into physical stores just after Thanksgiving Day.
The churches provide worship services and organize special events for the occasion.
Some people also do voluntary community work on this day, as a way of paying back.
It's about expressing gratitude to the important people and all the good things in your life.
Distances don't really matter as relatives return home to be with their family, no matter how far away.

Knowing that you have a great interest in / take a great fancy to Chinese culture, especially China’s National Day. It’s my pleasure / honor to introduce it to you. National Day is one of the most significant festivals in China, which falls on October 1st every year. People celebrate this festival in celebration of the foundation of People’s Republic of China, the so-called New China, dating back to 1949. During the holiday, we will have a week-long legal holiday. People in China will also hold a variety of activities to honor this special day, such as holding grand military parade, watching the splendid gala on TV, having a travel and so on.
In my opinion, this festival is of great significance because it reminds the young to have a sincere respect for our mother land. I believe you will have an unforgettable experience if you come to China during this festival. Looking forward to your coming.
