Five ancient Chinese poems about spring
As the winter chill still lingers through early spring, longing for warm days has sprung up
everywhere Before the flowers are in full blossom, here is a collection of ancient Chinese poems
picturing the revival of life during spring The English translations used in this article are from
Chinese translator Xu Yuanchong
Spring Morning — by Meng Haoran (689—740) of the Tang Dynasty (618—907)
This spring morning in bed I’m lying,
Not to awake till birds are crying
After one night of wind and showers,
How many are the fallen flowers!
—高中二年级质量监测英语试卷 第 2 页 (共 8 页)—
Written in a Village South of the Capital — by Cui Hu (772—846) of the Tang Dynasty
In this house on this day last year, a pink face vied,
In beauty with the pink peach blossoms side by side
I do not know today where the pink face has gone,
In the vernal breeze still smile pink peach blossoms full - blown
Happy Rain on a Spring Night (Excerpts) — by Du Fu (712—770) of the Tang Dynasty
Good rain knows its time right,
It will fall when comes spring
With wind it steals in night,
Mute, it moistens each thing
Dreaming of the Southern Shore — by Bai Juyi (772—846) of the Tang Dynasty
Fair Southern shore,
With scenes I much adore
At sunrise riverside flowers redder than fire,
In spring green waves grow as blue as sapphire,
Which I can’t but admire
Love Seeds — by Wang Wei (701—761) of the Tang Dynasty
Red berries grow in the southern land,
How many load in spring the trees?
Gather them till full is your hand,
They would revive fond memories

The moment he saw an organ, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart knew what to do with it Aged six,
already skilled at the clavier (键盘乐器), he came across pedals (踏板) and stops for the first
time in an Austrian church Within moments he was playing an accompaniment and composing on the
spot freely In the following year, 1763, an official in Heidelberg was so astonished by his organ -
playing that he had a plate carved for his church to mark the boy’s visit Mozart composed his first
symphony at eight
Youthful promise often declines With Mozart the opposite was true Through him classical music
may have found its most ideal expression As Jan Swafford writes in his outstanding biography,
Mozart’s compositions displayed “a kind of effortless perfection so easily worn that they seem almost
to have written themselves” He drafted quickly, often without needing to revise He “could express
delight by the yard” A man of his time, Mozart was equally at home composing for the concert salon
or the opera stage
He is the subject of many biographies, but the leading one, by Hermann Aber, is 100 years old
and 1, 600 pages long Swafford, himself a composer and a programme - writer, offers an updated
and authoritative life, easy to understand, beautifully written, and full of critical judgments and
—高中二年级质量监测英语试卷 第 3 页 (共 8 页)—
sharp notes on the works
Mozart’ s way with melody and keen view of human nature — his letters reveal an almost
Dickensian ability to paint characters — combined to promote opera from desserts to a serious
medium, the author argues “His wisdom, his ability to observe people and their weaknesses, his
fascination with the craze for love — all this made him the perfect composer” of the form, Mr
Swafford thinks
He was admired in his time Most of his music stuck to conventional structures yet went over the
heads of the average listener Legend has it that his most important fan, Emperor Joseph II, reacted
to one performance with an impressive comment: “Too beautiful for our ears, my dear Mozart!”
24 What does Paragraph 1 mainly discuss?
A The true origin of the symphony B Mozart’s remarkable talent for music
C Musical instruments in Mozart’s time D A friendship between Mozart and an official
25 What does Swafford think of Mozart’s compositions?
A They sounded perfect B They were created hurriedly
C They expressed his criticism D They should be performed outdoors
26 How does Mozart’s biography by Swafford stand out?
A By comparing contemporary musicians’ works
B By including the remarks of Emperor Joseph II
C By giving professional and accessible comments
D By referring to other writers’ constructive advice
27 What did Mozart contribute to?
A Creating music for folk stories B Inspirations for Dickens’ works
C Reforms of conventional structures D Transforming opera to a serious art form

What Is Social Media?
Not many people ask the question “what is social media?” anymore Social media has been
around for years, and most of us would probably describe it as any Internet medium that can be used
to share information with others, including blogs, forums, applications, games, websites and other
stuff
But let me ask you this: what exactly is so “social” about sitting before a computer, setting up
a blog and blogging for days without anybody reading it, or scrolling through your Facebook full of
information from 500 friends you barely know? If you ask me, it can be a way more anti - social than
anything
Social media is not a“thing” It’s not just Facebook, WeChat and Weibo It’s more of a frame
of mind and a state of being It’ s about how you use it to improve your relationships with other
people in real life However, we tend to rely on technology and social media so much that it can
actually tear apart those relationships
Social media isn’ t about numbers When someone says “ social - media”, web giants like
Facebook, Twitter, WeChat and Weibo instantly pop into our minds, often because they have more
updates, more friends, more followers, more links, more photos, and more everything We tend to
get distracted by the number game, thinking “ volume, volume, volume” It has led to a lot of
meaningless noise and information overload As the old saying goes, quality over quantity is usually
the way to go So, social media is not just about lots of people aimlessly pushing around lots of
information
Social media needs to have an “IRL” factor — an Internet slang standing for “In Real Life” It
should affect how a person thinks or acts offline After all, social media shouldn’ t be an end in
itself It has been built to enhance your actual social life Take for example an event that a person
—高中二年级质量监测英语试卷 第 4 页 (共 8 页)—
attends because he is invited by the host on Facebook through a Facebook event page Something like
that definitely has the IRL factor Likewise, a WeChat photo that touches someone so much that he
feels the need to bring it up and describe it to someone else during a dinner date also has the IRL
factor
So, is it really considered to be social to spend an hour scrolling through photos on Weibo, with
no thoughtful or emotional effect and no interaction with others? In fact, there is no wall between
real life and Internet life where true social media exists Social media is not a specific place on the
Internet or just a thing you use to see what other people are doing It’s all about creating meaningful
experiences and relationships wherever you may be
28 What does the underlined phrase “tear apart” in Paragraph 3 mean in the text?
A Change B Destroy C Continue D Strengthen
29 The writer thinks that social media should be
A a number of websites where people communicate
B a set of social tools like Facebook, WeChat and Weibo
C a collection of online applications where ideas are exchanged
D a group name for online platforms used to strengthen meaningful relationships
30 According to the author, which of the following cases has an IRL factor?
A Following new friends on Facebook
B Updating Facebook on a regular basis
C Visiting a museum with friends after reading a story on Weibo
D Reading Twitter to see what other people are doing and thinking about
31 What is the author’s purpose of writing this article?
A To explain the importance of social media
B To inform the negative effects of social media
C To call on readers to use social media to promote real social life
D To encourage readers to interact with others in real life more often

One of Britain’s most outstanding scientists says the growth in the use of electronic tablets and
smart phones is causing people to spend so much time indoors that they need to take regular vitamin
D supplements to make up for the lack of sunlight they receive naturally
Geneticist Steve Jones said he himself was a follower to the cause and urged others to follow “I
never thought I would be a person who would take vitamin supplements; I always thought it was
absolute nonsense But now I take vitamin D every day Today, because I knew the sun wasn’t going
to shine, I took an extra one,” he said
Exposure to the sun is the major source of vitamin D However, people are spending less and
less time outdoors in many areas The problem is particularly serious in Scotland “The Scots are the
whitest people in the world because they are in great need of sunlight,” he said, adding that life
expectancy in Scotland is two years shorter than in England or Wales Multiple sclerosis (多发性硬
化症), a medical condition which is often seen in northern Europe, is also higher in Scotland than
in England
Vitamin D helps with the absorption of Ca, which helps keep bones strong And Jones said the
fact that rickets (佝偻病) was making a comeback in Britain after nearly 50 years was another sign
of how changing behavior patterns were bringing physical harm
Jones admitted that concerns over the damaging effects on skin of long - time exposure to the
sun were reasonable, but said sunlight was healthy and necessary for the human body, and could
help in lowering blood pressure “ If you lie on the beach for an hour, you will drop your blood
pressure by about 10 points, because it relaxes your blood vessels (血管) So, get out in the sun
while we still can,” he said
—高中二年级质量监测英语试卷 第 5 页 (共 8 页)—
32 How are people affected by the rise of technology according to the text?
A They are more sensitive to sunlight
B They get less vitamin D than before
C They don’t need vitamin D supplements
D They become addicted to electronic games
33 What is Jones’ attitude towards taking vitamin D supplements now?
A Worried B Cautious C Skeptical D Supportive
34 Why are the Scots the whitest people in the world?
A Because their blood pressure is very low
B Because they are in great need of sunlight
C Because they enjoy a short period of sunshine
D Because they are easy to get multiple sclerosis
35 Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A Get out and gain more Vitamin D
B Keep away from tablets and phones
C Pay attention to the importance of sunlight
D Take vitamin D supplements to keep healthy

My parents love the saying “If at first you don’ t succeed, try, try again” so much that they
even bought a pillow with those words on it But I was recently in a situation where I was SO ready to
give up
It started last week when my friend Ollie and I were helping his grandmother Mary to carry
boxes from her garage to her car for the homeless shelter rummage sale (义卖)
At the sight of a big old trunk (行李箱), we asked Mary what was inside But she told us that
as she had lost the key, she had to find a master locksmith to figure it out “Let me have a try!”
said Ollie “I bet I can open that lock in two minutes flat! Maybe there’ s a treasure inside, like
gold or diamonds or an ancient map!”
Mary smiled “I’ll tell you what If you two treasure hunters can open this trunk, you can have
it, along with whatever is inside ”
Ollie got a tool kit and we set out to open the lock But he definitely lost that bet Those two
minutes turned into two hours, with no luck at all We had tried every tool in the kit, but the lock
wouldn’t move slightly
“It’s no use ” Ollie sighed “I guess we have to give up ”
“But we can’t give up!” I said “What about If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again?”
Ollie shook his head “ Unless you know a magical key fairy, we ’ re never getting this
unlocked ”
Just then, my little brother Tex showed up He showed great interest in the trunk “It looks like
an upside - down boat! Can I turn it over and pretend I’m sailing in the ocean?”
“Sure,” Ollie replied “It’s no good for anything else ”
“Ahoy!” Tex said, climbing on top after Ollie and I turned it over “ I’m the captain!” He
giggled as he jumped up and down And right then, a screw (螺丝) from a hinge (铰链) came
loose and rolled to the floor
Paragraph 1:“That’s it! I know how to open it!” said Ollie
Paragraph 2:Oh! There were only lots of shoes in the trunk!

Possible version:
Dear fellow students,
I’m writing to raise our concern about the waste of used textbooks Here are my suggestions of
recycling textbooks
There are many reasons why we should do this Above all, a large number of textbooks have
been used, resulting in a serious waste of resources For another, recycling textbooks can release
the financial burden of society and individuals
However, what should we do to recycle textbooks? On the one hand, the careful usage of
textbooks is needed, which will guarantee they can be used again On the other hand, we should set
up an institution to organize the textbooks recycling
Finally, I propose that we all should take action to participate in the activity of recycling
textbooks and contribute our own strength to save resources (106 words)

could remove the screws so that the hinge can be taken off from the trunk!” he exclaimed with a
radiant smile Just now, we were so focused on the lock that we didn’t try to open the trunk another
way Then we asked Tex to jump off the trunk, and turned it upright Ollie immediately took out a
screwdriver from the tool kit In two minutes flat, he opened the trunk with my assistance (83

Paragraph 2: Oh! There were only lots of shoes in the trunk! Ollie and I were pretty

us on the shoulder, saying, “These shoes are in such great shape that we can raise money by selling
them at the rummage sale ” Our faces lit up and a sense of achievement crept over us We found
“treasure” after all! Our persistence finally paid off! If at first you don’ t succeed, try, try again

故事中反复出现的主题句“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!”或其他类似的表达(如,
成功在于坚持)亦可。

Good morning everybody and welcome to this class on English words I hope that all of you
can hear me If not, please let me know I am Professor John Morris I’ ll be your teacher for the
next 13 weeks As you can probably tell, this is one of the most popular and crowded classes
Indeed, every time this course is offered, this room is full Why is that? Well, in order to use the
English language, it’ s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are
formed Just to mention one figure and there are many; there are about one million words in
English If you are an English learner, you may wonder how you can possibly remember all of these
words Well, for one thing, you don’t have to No native speaker exists who knows all of the words
in the English language Besides, there are short cuts Short cuts? Yes, for example, if you know
how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French,
you’ll understand a good number of English words when you first come across them Let me put it
this way Knowing the rules will help you to master a large number of words This is probably
the No 1 reason why this class is so popular
