Most people can't live to 100. Those who do live so long can hardly walk, let alone take part in any activities. A few people, however, take part in dangerous activities even though they are more than 100 years old﹣ They keep going and going! There is a great grandmother who likes challenging herself although she is 101 years old this year.
Mary Hardison believes that people should always be cheerful and more importantly, take on all kinds of adventures while they physically still can. So, instead of celebrating her 101st birthday with a boring party, she decided to go paragliding(滑翔跳伞)﹣ an idea she got from her 75﹣year﹣old son who recently took it up as a hobby.
So on her birthday, cheered on by her big family, she tied herself up together with expert instructor Kevin Hintze, and jumped down fearlessly from the sky near her home in Ogden, Utah. And, it was not just a simple jump either. According to Kevin Hintze, the grandmother encouraged him to turn around, as they made their way down.
This is not the first time that Mary has done something "wild" and "crazy". For her 90th birthday she rode all the adult rides at Disneyland. And, she is not done yet﹣ For her 102nd birthday she hopes to go down the 3,000 feet Alpine Slide at Utah's Park City Mountain Resort!

Johnny Cash was born in 1932 in the southern state of Arkansas. His parents were poor cotton farmers. As a school boy, he began writing songs and he performed on radio programs. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force and served as a radio operator in Germany.

Mirroring body language is a way to bond and to build understanding. It is a powerful tool that we use without even knowing it.
The most obvious forms of mirroring are yawning and smiling. When you see someone yawn, you are likely to yawn immediately. Smiling is also pretty contagious-seeing a smiling person makes you want to smile too.
Mirroring body language is a nonverbal way to say “I am like you, I feel the same”. Research shows that people who experience the same feelings are likely to trust, understand and accept each other.
Women have the natural ability to pick up and understand body signals. Therefore, it is not surprising that a woman is more likely to mirror another woman than a man is to mirror another man. That's why women are regarded as better talkers, even if they might not really have more close friends.
It is interesting that when a man tries to mirror a woman's body language while she is talking, he may seem to her as caring, intelligent and attractive.
Mirroring body language is an excellent way to build trust and understanding quickly. If you want to set up a connection with a new person, mirror his or her gestures, sitting position, tone of voice and talking pace. This will make them feel that there is something about you that they like.
While mirroring body language gains you acceptance, you still need to take into consideration your relationship with the person you are mirroring. If you are in a lower social position and are mirroring the body language of your boss, he will view you as arrogant. However, if you want to defeat those who are trying to prove superior to you, mirroring their body language will help defeat them and change their position.

This is a story of a penguin that swims 5,000 miles to a beach in Brazil every year in order to visit the man who saved his life. It sounds like something out of a fairy tale (童话故事), but it’s true!
Joao Pereira de Souza is a 71-year-old retired worker and part-time fisherman. He lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He found the small penguin lying on rocks at his local beach in 2015.
The penguin was starving and covered in oil. Joao rescued the penguin, naming him Din Din, cleaned the oil off his feathers and fed him fish to rebuild his strength.
When Din Din recovered, Mr. de Souza set him free into the sea, never expecting to see his new friend again.
The little guy wasn’t gone long though, and just a few months later, he was back at the same beach. He found Joao fishing and followed him home, staying with him for the rest of the year.
Amazingly this cycle has continued over the past five years. Each year Din Din spends about eight months with Joao and is believed to spend the rest of the time breeding(繁殖) on the Patagonia coasts of Argentina and Chile.
“I love the penguin like he’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,”Joao told Globo TV. “No one else is allowed to touch him. He attacks them if they do. He lies on my lap, lets me give him showers, allows me to feed(喂养) him fish and to pick him up.”
Professor Krajewski, a biologist who interviewed the fisherman for Globo TV, said: “I have never seen anything like this before. I think the penguin believes Joao is part of his family and probably a penguin as well.”

Swimming and English Learning
Can you swim Do you like swimming Yes Well, how can you learn to swim I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I'm afraid you'll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It's the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.
Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn't matter. Just be relaxed and try to catch every word.
Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He's afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don't be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important. When there's nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It's interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you'll make.
Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First we must choose the books we're interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.
Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don't be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.
Easier said than done. Well, let's do more practice from now on. I'm sure you'll learn English well in this way.

When a person in the United States gets the COVID-19 vaccine (疫苗), the person receives a small piece of paper called a “COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card”.
It is a piece of paper with the logo of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, and the name and date of the vaccine. Because it is so simple, it could be easy to fake.
Many people in the US are now buying fake(假的) vaccination cards without getting a shot, as universities, workplaces and other places are requiring proof of vaccination.
The Associated Press reports that students and teachers at universities around the U.S. are worried about fake cards. Sellers are using social media apps like Instagram to advertise fake vaccination cards. The prices change from $25 to $200. The AP notes that many college students seem interested in buying the cards. On the website Reddit, one person wrote, “I need one, too, for college. I refuse to be a guinea pig.”
It is reported that more than 700 universities and colleges require proof of vaccination. Most schools simply ask their students to take a photo of their card and send it to a school website. Benjamin Mason Meier is a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC. He studies international health policy. He said, unlike some countries, the US is not using a digital system to record vaccine status. He said the US is depending on “a flimsy paper card”, and students have told him they knew of others who had used fake vaccination cards. Rebecca Williams also works at UNC. She is a researcher at the school’s Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. She said she was not surprised that people were worried about fake vaccination cards. “This is why I think the development of a reliable(可靠的) national digital vaccine passport app is very important,” she said.
There is a law that should stop people from making fake vaccination cards. If someone uses the CDC logo without permission, they can be lined and punished by up to five years in prison. The US Department of Justice recently charged a person in California with making fake vaccination cards.
College students who already have the vaccine are criticizing those who would rather spend money to buy a fake than get a free shot. Maliha Reza, an electrical engineering student at Pennsylvania State University, called those students “dumb”. “I’m angry about that,” she said. “Like, there is more anger than I could describe now.”
12. Why do some college students buy fake vaccination cards
A. They are easy to get.
B. Many Americans are still uncertain about getting the vaccine.
C. Students have an interest in the fake vaccination cards.
D. To get a vaccine shot is expensive.
13. Which of the following measures can NOT be used to stop the fake cards
A. Having a law that should prevent people from making false vaccination cards.
B. Developing a reliable national digital vaccine passport app.
C. Using a digital system to record vaccine status.
D. Having all the students take a photo of their vaccination card and send it to the school website.
14. What does the underlined word “flimsy” probably mean
A. Weak. B. Useful. C. Strict. D. Advanced.
15. What might be the writing purpose for the news report
A. To spread a digital system to record the vaccination shots.

The following are a few of my favorite TV shows, each of which have some educational value.
Blue Peter
As a child, this was one of the only programmes I was allowed to watch. It is the longest-running children's TV show in the world, but seemed to have fallen out of fashion recently. The crafts on the show were always good fun, and you would often learn about different countries around the world—for example, one presenter went to the Amazon rainforest in South America!
The Great British Bake Off
This show is all about making cakes, biscuits, and pies. The aim is to find British’s best amateur(业余的)baker. You can watch the show to get some ideas of new things to try baking and the recipes are often available online.
Frozen Planet
David Attenborough has produced many wildlife documentaries. I love this show not only because of the cute animals in it, but also because it teaches us about the effect we have on the planet and what need to do to save these regions. David narrates each episode(电视剧的一集); because he speaks clearly and slowly, his show might be of interest to English language learners.
Pointless
This show is a general knowledge quiz show. Each round will feature a different category(e.g. Sport, music, films) and a topic will be given, for example “Teams which have won the World Cup”. Before the show, 100 people will have been asked the same question. Then they have to think of an answer and the aim is to find an answer which none of the 100 people asked before the show thought of. I've learnt a lot from this show!
1. If you are a food lover, you may be interested in _______.
A. Blue Peter B. The Great British Bake Off C. Frozen Planet D. Pointless
2. Which of the TV shows may attract English language learners
A. Blue Peter B. The Great British Bake Off

On Sunday, April 23, almost 50,000 athletes took to the streets to compete in the 37th London Marathon. While few were able to get even close to Daniel Wanjiru’s 2:05:48 winning time, none were as slow as Tom Harrison, who crawled (爬) to the finish line, six days later, on April 30.
However, the Metropolitan Police Officer, who was dressed in a gorilla (大猩猩) suit, had a good reason for his slowness. He had completed the 26.2 miles on all fours to raise funds to help gorilla conservation efforts in Africa. The 41-year-old who spent 8—10 hours on his hands and knees, covered about 4.5 miles each day before crashing at a friend’s house for the night. To prevent his knees from blistering, he swapped between hands and knees into loping (大步走) along on hands and feet and took breaks every 100 to 200 meters. But the arduous crawl was well worth it.
Harrison, who crossed the finish line at 11:45 am, has raised over 37,000 ($47,800), far more than his original goal of 1,790 ($2,300), for the Gorilla Organization, whose efforts are mainly spent in Rwanda, Uganda, and Democratic Republic of the Congo. The much-needed funds will help train the communities near gorilla habitats to support themselves and make them rely less on selling wildlife meat for a living. The money will also help pay for ranger services to monitor excess hunting of the Great Apes. More importantly, Harrison hopes his six-day crawl will highlight the bad situation of the gorillas, whose numbers are decreasing at alarming rates, and encourage more people to help protect them.
While thrilled at the outcome, Harrison, Mr. Gorilla, is not done yet. He intends to continue his fundraising efforts at the annual Ride London cycling festival scheduled for the weekend of July 28-30, 2022.
4. Why did Tom Harrison crawl to the finish line
A. To improve his physical and mental health.
B. To collect money for the Gorilla Organization.

D. To advertise policies for Metropolitan Police.
5. What does the underlined word “arduous” mean in paragraph 2

A. To help protect habitats for endangered gorillas.
B. To protect gorillas in some African countries.
C. To monitor and punish illegal hunting for gorillas.
D. To make people aware of the bad situation of gorillas.
7. Which word can best describe Tom Harrison
A. Strong. B. Hard-working.

A new study has found that braving the cold maybe a good way to help burn off some fat.
The research was carried out by scientists at Canada’s Laurentian University and focused on high-intensity interval training(HIIT). This format has grown in popularity of late due to the fat-burning benefits it brings, and the team set out to explore how temperature might influence its effects.
The study involved 11 overweight adults who took part in two HIIT sessions a week apart. One of these was carried out in a “thermoneutral” environment with temperatures of around 70 °F(21℃),and the other at a cold 32 °F(0℃). The sessions consisted of 10 separate cycling race at 90 percent effort lasting one minute, followed by 90-second “recovery” periods of cycling at30 percent intensity.
After each session, the participants cooled down by gently cycling or walking, ate a nutrition bar before going to sleep and enjoyed a high-fat breakfast the morning after. During these sessions, the scientists monitored skin temperature, core body temperature, heart rate and the amount of oxygen. Blood samples were also drawn to help calculate fat burning rates following the breakfast the next day.
“The present study found that high-intensity exercise in the cold increased lipid oxidation (脂质氧化) by 358 percent in comparison to high-intensity exercise in a thermoneutral environment,”the team writes.
The authors also note that the idea that cold temperatures help us burn more fat during exercise will need further investigation (调查), though the first-of-a-kind study does indicate it’s a possibility worth pursuing.
8. What is good for burning off fat according to the study
A. Cold food. B. Low temperature.

A. Further study needs to be done.
B. Doing exercise burns more fat.
C. The efforts of scientists are in vain.
D. The study result is unreasonable.
11. What of the following could be the best title for the text
A. High-intensity Workouts Help Burn off Extra Calories
B. Cycling in the Cold Is a Great Way to Build upYour Body
C. Study Shows Fat-burning Potential of Exercising in the Cold

I was driving home the other day on a sunny afternoon. It was such a beautiful day that I felt very happy. My good mood (心情) ended, however, when I suddenly heard a piece of news on the radio about a rich famous man who had broken the law. I shook my head as I came to a red traffic light.
As I stopped I noticed four leather-jacketed motorbikers. They were standing in the middle of the road with two on either side of the light. They looked dangerous, but as I got closer I noticed each one was holding their helmet (头盔) in their hands. I rolled down my window as one approached my car. “We are the Brother of the Wheel,” he said. “We are collecting money for Christmas Toy Drive for needy children.” As I pulled a dollar out of my wallet I looked past his beard and into his eyes. They shined with kindness that came right from his heart. I dropped the money in his helmet and waved to the other three men as I drove off. My good mood had returned. And I remembered once again never to judge (判断) people by their appearance (外表).
Our society often judges books by their covers. Perhaps one day we will realize that actions (行为) are much more important than appearance.

Amsterdam is most famous for its artistic heritage. This tradition is proudly on display in the Rijksmuseum (translates as State Museum). Once you’ve taken in all that has to offer, artists, history fens, and families shouldn’t pass up the chance to visit the Van Gogh Museum —containing around 700 paintings and drawings by Vincent and other artists, including Gauguin, Monet, and Toulouse-Lautrec.
Amsterdam is also home to the Anne Frank Museum, where Anne hid with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. On a lighter note, taking a canal cruise through its extensive waterways is a rewarding way to see the Dutch capital.

Food and drink
Cheese lovers love Amsterdam. You can find an excuse to eat cheese at any time of the day here. Gouda is Holland’s favorite, developing a more intense flavor the longer it’s aged. Find a selection at the markets, try a cheeseboard at dinner time, or just order cubes with mustard for dipping to accompany a drink. When you’re hungry for non-cheese food groups, you’ll find Michel in-starred restaurants, vegetarian, and organic restaurants that accompany an array of global cuisine. For old-fashioned and modern Dutch food, try these Amsterdam restaurants: Moeders, Haesje Claes, Loctje, Greetje, and De Silveren Spiegel.
Don’t leave without tasting:

Smartphones, tablets and smart watches are banned (禁止) at school for all children under 15 in France. Under the ban students are not able to use their phones at all during school hours, including meal breaks.
“I think it’s a good thing. School is not about being on your phone,” Paris mum Marie-Caroline Madeleine told AFP. “It’s hard with kids. You can’t control what they see and that’s one of the things that worry me as a parent.”
There is no law like this in Australia, but some Australian schools have banned phones.
McKinnon Secondary School in Victoria introduced a total ban in February and Principal Pitsa Binnion said this has been a success.
McKinnon students still have a Chromebook to use in every class for day-to-day learning but they’re not allowed to use social media. Ms Binnion said at first “teachers cheered and students moaned (抱怨) ,” but now they’re seeing the advantages. “They come to school and they’re not allowed to use phones at all during the school day, including lunch breaks,” she said.
“It’s been wonderful in terms of students communicating with each other at lunchtime and not looking at their screen,” she said.
Ms Binnion also leads by example and doesn’t use her mobile phone in school. “I think anyone can do it if we’ve done it.”
Not everyone agrees with the bans. Western Sydney University technology researcher Dr Joanne Orlando wrote in online magazine The Conversation earlier this year that Australia should not ban phones in schools because it’s important to educate kids to live in the age they are raised in.
“A good education for students today is knowing how to use technology to learn, communicate and work with ideas,” she wrote. “Banning students from using smartphones is a 1950s response to a 2018 state-of-play.”
4. Why did Madeleine welcome the ban
A. School is for studying. B. Kids behave badly nowadays.
C. Teachers find it hard to control kids. D. Her kids depend too much on phones.
5. What can we learn about the ban in McKinnon Secondary School

British Writer John Donne once said:“No man is an island;every book is a world.”As an enthusiastic reader,I can’t agree with the latter part of the sentence more.Every summer.I endeavor to find some peaceful places where I can attack some classics without being disturbed.Thomas Hardy wants to live far from the madding crowd.I am no friend to chaos, either.
I read George Orwell’s 1984 in a New England beachside cottage with no locks on the doors,no telephones or televisions in the rooms.1984 is a good book that needs deep reflection.Attempting Sound and Fury lying on the bed of a poorly-occupied motel, however, was less fruitful:I made it through one and a quarter volumes, but then my eyelids were so heavy that I couldn’t keep them open.
But this summer I find myself at a loss.I’m not quite interested in J.D.Salinger,say,or Frankenstein. There’s always War and Peace.which I’ve covered some distance several times, only to get bogged down in the“War”part, set it aside for a while, and realize that I have to start over from the beginning again, having forgotten everyone’s name and social rank. How appealing to simply fall back on a favorite—once more into The Call of the Wild or Alice in the Wonderland, which feels almost like cheating, too exciting and too much fun to belong to serious literature.
And then there’s John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. This title do not amaze but confuse. We’re never short of sour grapes, but we’ve never heard of angry grapes.Anyway grapes are my favorite fruit of summer. These stone fruits can always make me feel cheerful and peaceful all at once.

"I feel unlikable, lonely and hopeless," said Lisa, a bright teenager from a loving home. "It seems that nobody wants to become my friend. What's wrong with me "
Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people, no matter what their age or character—even the most outgoing, wealthy and popular—experience loneliness at least sometimes. It's healthy and natural to want to be around people who care. After all, we've all heard "No man is an island." That's true. We all need others in our lives.
Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explains that if we want friends, we must be friendly and reach out to others. But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection(拒绝), many of us are unwilling to reach out to others. We take a safer way and wait for others to make friends with us. But if we want friends, we've got to get beyond this.
If making friends is your goal as well, you need to consider taking some measures(措施).
Be willing to take the initiative(主动权). If you see someone whom you would like to know, don't wait for her to make the first move. Get close to her and begin a conversation. Let her know in a non-aggressive(无攻击性的)way that you are interested in being friends with her.
Reach out to those who are lonely. When you see someone at school sitting alone, go over and talk to her. And don't let popularity decide whom you reach out to. You'll often be surprised at the beautiful qualities behind a shy appearance.
Ask questions. Start your first conversation by asking this possible friend what she likes to do or asking about her family. Be sure to ask questions that cannot be replied with "yes" or "no". For example, don't ask "Do you have a dog " Instead, say "So, tell me about your pets." Avoiding asking "yes" or "no" questions makes your possible friend not end your communication with a one-word answer.
12. Why does the author begin the text with Lisa's worry'
A. To set a sad tone.
B. To introduce the topic.
C. To share Lisa's pain.
D. To teach readers a lesson.
13. What can be a risk caused by reaching out to others according to the passage
A. Being refused by others.
B. Putting ourselves in danger.
C. Being treated in a rude way.
D. Losing interest in communicating.
14. What can we know from Paragraph 5
A. Popular people are often easy-going.
B. Just waiting for chances will help you make friends.
C. A proper manner is important in making friends.
D. Shy people are hard to talk to.
15. Why does the author suggest not asking "yes" or "no" questions
A. It is considered unfriendly.
B. It will leave a bad first impression.
C. It shows the poor quality of the speaker.
D. It isn't good for keeping a conversation going.

But which one is the cleverest ”He called his three sons to him. “Here is some money,” he told them, “you must each take one coin to buy something that will fill this room. Anyone who can do this shall have my fortune.”
“It is a big room,” said the eldest son.
“One coin will not buy very much,” said the second son.
But the youngest son said nothing. He stood and thought, and then he smiled, “Come, brothers,” he said, “let us go to the market.”
The eldest son bought straw with his coin. But one coin bought only a bit of straw. Even when he had spread it as much as he could, the straw covered only a corner of the room.
The second son bought sand with his coin. But one coin bought only a bit of sand. Even when he had spread it as much as he could, the sand covered only half of the floor.
“What did you buy ” the eldest son angrily asked the youngest son. “You don’t have any straw.”
“Yes, what did you buy ” the second son asked angrily. “You don’t have any sand.”
“I bought this,” said the youngest son.

There are several ways from which to choose for you to keep your kids safe in your neighborhood. But the first step to keep your child safe in your neighborhood is to know your neighbors.
Knowing your neighbors can save you a lot of worry. It lets you know that the car that has just driven down the street belongs to “the yellow house on the corner”, or the truck that has just driven by the playground looks unfamiliar, but the guy in the passenger seat lives two doors down. It’s these simple things that keep you from going out of your mind whenever you see someone driving by where children are playing.
But you shouldn’t just know what they look like. The next step is to know them well. What do they do How do they act You might be OK with them driving by the playground since they live in the neighborhood, but are you OK with them being on the playground Knowing your neighbors helps with several things. First you find out what kind of people they are. This helps you know if you should let your child go out in an area that they gather. Let’s face it: you don’t want your child to play around people or people’s children that curse (咒骂) or hit each other. Sometimes you have to protect your child against your own neighbors.
Knowing them also makes them know you. Being neighbors is an interesting thing. You might not like them or have the same views as them, but we all usually protect those that we consider our own. If you know your neighbors, they know you. They will more probably look after the child of the nice lady down the street in the brick house, than the people in the house on the corner that no one ever sees.
4. This text is mainly to tell how to ________.
A. keep your child safe in the neighborhood

C. you are the one nobody knows D. they think you are a beautiful lady

My dad is the kind of parent that expects my best. He would never be angry if I failed at something as long as I tried. He never changes his mind after he makes it, which sometimes makes him seem too stubborn. My dad’s strictness comes from the way he was raised. He grew up working long hours on his family farm. His dad was bad-tempered, and he would get angry enough to throw wooden boards at my dad when he did something wrong. In high school, my dad woke up at four in the morning to get his chores(家务杂事) done and walk to school so that he would make it to basketball practice by five.
Through all of the duties my dad had at home, he played three sports and went to school on top of it. School would have been easy, but my dad had dyslexia(读写困难)which made it nearly impossible for him to read. Since dyslexia wasn’t recognized back then, every teacher my dad had passed along thinking that he was just unable to learn. My dad struggled in school until one teacher took the time to sit down and teach him how to read and write.
The best part about my dad is his attitude toward daily life. Even though he likes things once right, he also knows how go to with the flow and have a good time. My dad doesn’t worry about things he can’t control. When he comes home from a terrible day at work, he always puts on a smile on his face because he knows family is a lot more important than any other things.
I know that I get my best qualities from my parents and the way they raised me. My dad has shown me that with discipline and hard work I can achieve anything, and have fun while doing it.

It’s quite normal for children to experience fears while growing up, according to child psychiatrists (精神病专家). Luckily, most of them will gradually overcome these childhood fears over time, if they receive the support that’s needed from their parents. So, how do you help your child deal with his / her fears Here is some advice:
▲Realize that childhood fears only become a problem if they prevent children from going to school, playing outside or in general, carrying on with their lives. Otherwise, experiencing fears is a normal part of growing up and should not raise concerns.
▲Work together with your child to find practical ways that can reduce his / her fears. For example, if he / her is afraid of the dark, installing (安装) a night light or providing him / her with a teddy bear might help.
▲Tell your child that he / her is not the only one who has fears. Even adults have fears. Share your own fears with him / her. Tell him / her it’s nothing wrong to be afraid. Teach him / her that the secret to managing fears is to come up with a plan for dealing with them.
▲Do not push your child to overcome his / her fears. Encourage him / her, and let him / her work through his / her fears little by little at his / her own pace. It’s important to let him / her continue at his / her own comfort level at all times.
▲Before you can help him / her, find out the real cause of his / her fears. For example, if your child says that he / she is afraid of going to school, what he / she may really be afraid of is dealing with the bully (欺凌者) on the school bus.
▲Do not belittle your child for his / her fears, even though they may seem ridiculous (荒唐的) to you. His / her fears are very real to him / her. Instead, accept his / her fears for what they are.
If your child’s fears seem to be getting worse, instead of better, do not hesitate to get professional (专业的) help. Help from a child psychiatrist or psychologist may finally solve his / her problems.
