Task 5
Writing
Imagine that you are Steven from 1b. Write a letter to a friend about the table manners in China.
Table Manners in China
Talking about eating habits, unlike the West where everyone has their own plate of food, in China the dishes are placed on the table and everybody shares.
Chinese are very proud of their culture of cooking and will do their best to show their hospitality.
And sometimes the host will serve some dishes with his or her own chopsticks to guests to show his or her hospitality. This is a sign of politeness. The right thing to do would be to eat the whatever it is and say how yummy it is.
If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can just say "thank you" politely and leave the food there. There are some other rules about the eating custom in China.
1. In China, it's impolite to use your chopsticks to hit an empty bowl. empty
His room is empty. His wordy and empty speech was a frost.
They emptied the biscuits onto the plate.
He tilted the barrel so as to empty it.
①empty sth. into sth.
Empty the dirty water into bowl.
②empty (itself) into sth. 流入……
如:Many rivers in Asia empty itself into the Pacific.
Language points
2. ... point at anyone with your chopsticks.
He missed the whole point of my speech. The line AB cuts the line CD at the point E. Heat the water till it reaches boiling point.
The hands of the clock point to five o'clock.
point at 指着e.g. Don’t point at me with your finger.
辨析:point at, point to 与 point out
