Walter Peak High Country Farm, on the western shores of Lake Wakatipu is famous in history. Its sheltered bays were used as camping sites by Maori travelling to the Mararoa and Oreti Rivers on Moa hunting and gathering expeditions.
Things to do
Situated on picturesque Lake Wakatipu's wester shores, the farm is the perfect place to spend a few relaxing hours. The Farm Tour itself is a wonderful experience for the whole family, with something to keep everyone entertained and happy. Our rural host will meet you after you leave the steamboat and take you for a walking tour of the farmyard. The first stop is the holding to help feed the sheep and deer, and even get up close to the Scottish highland cattle. Then walk slowly through the lakeside gardens to the charming Colonel's Homestead for morning or afternoon tea. Afterwards the farmer will lead you over to the shearing shed (剪羊毛棚)where you can watch the farm dogs rounding up sheep on the hills, and see the farmer cut the wool off a sheep. You will then board the steamboat for your cruise back to Queenstown.

When it comes to the most famous 20th century painters of the United States, Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself: "I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me". No one could have had a more active old age.
She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12 she left home and was in domestic service until at 27 she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery(刺绣) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands became too stiff (僵硬的)to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modem Art,and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930's and her death, she produced some 2,000 pictures: careful and lively portrayals of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. "I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it" she said.
4. What can we learn about Moses? ______
A. She still led an active life when she was old.
B. She stopped painting in her late seventies.
C. Her marriage life was not happy.
D. She painted oils as a child.
5. What did Grandma Moses spend most of her life doing? ______
A. Embroidering. B. Nursing. C. Farming. D. Painting.

A. directions. B. stages. C. surveys. D. descriptions.
7. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? ______
A. Grandma Moses: The Best Woman Painter
B. Grandma Moses: A Famous Woman Painter of 20th Century
C. Grandma Moses and Her Exhibition
D. Grandma Moses and Her Farm Life

Scientists in England are using two self-directed water vehicles to explore the animal and plant life of the Celtic Sea.
The Celtic Sea is a body of water off the southern coast of Ireland. The area is known for its unusual sea life. Scientists want to know why sea creatures are so attracted to this part of the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the research vehicles is powered by batteries (电池).It collects information for the National Oceanography Center in Southampton, England, and the World Wildlife Fund. The vehicle's low energy requirements permit it to stay floating on water for up to 30 days. Reports of what it finds in the Celtic Sea are sent by satellite.
Stephen Woodward is an engineer who helped design the vehicle. He says the vehicle has equipment that can discover small organisms called zooplankton (浮游动物)and fish. He adds that other sensing equipment measures water currents and other features of sea life. The vehicle also creates a map of the sea.
Another vehicle is powered by the sun and the wind. It can stay floating on water for months. The robotic vehicle sends information about the so-called biodiversity hotspots. A biodiversity hotspot is an area of an ocean that has a lot of plant and animal life activities.
Lavinia Suberg is one of the scientists studying the Celtic Sea. She says productive ocean areas, like the Celtic Sea, attract zooplankton. The zooplankton then attracts fish. She adds that areas with a large increase of fish often attract sea mammals and birds.
Using these robotic ocean vehicles greatly reduces the cost of exploring the sea with manned laboratories. Scientists can spend more time analyzing the collected information. They say the research will give them a better understanding of the needs of the Celtic Sea for future management and protection.
8. Why do the British scientists explore the Celtic Sea? ______
A. To learn why the sea is rich in sea life.
B. B. To study the geography of the sea..
C. To test their self-directed water vehicles.
D. To learn about the sea creatures in the sea.
9. According to the text, the water vehicles ______ .
A. are controlled directly by humans
B. work depending on the map of the sea
C. can send the information back directly
D. can keep floating on water for a long time
10. According to Lavinia Suberg, the sea mammals and birds ______ .
A. are afraid of living alone
B. mainly feed on zooplankton
C. are especially interested in fish
D. like to live in warm ocean areas
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about? ______
A. The aim of sea exploration.
B. The importance of the water vehicles.
C. The cost of exploring the sea.
D. Ways to deal with the collected information.

"The Man with the Golden Arm" may sound like the name of some superhero in a comic book. But this name belongs to 78-year-old James Harrison - an Australian man who has donated blood almost every week, saving more than 2 million babies in the process.
Harrison told CNN, an American channel, about why he chooses to donate, even though it's not the most pleasurable experience: "Never once have I watched the needle go in my arm. I can't stand the sight of blood, and I can't stand pain."
An amazingly unique antibody (抗体)in Harrison's blood makes it a true lifesaver for babies who could be affected by rhesus disease.
The condition occurs during some pregnancies, when a woman who has rhesus-negative blood produces antibodies that destroy her babies' cells. This can happen when the baby has the same rhesus-positive blood as the father. Rhesus disease can cause health issues in babies. It can even result in death.
Harrison, blood helped physicians develop an injection called Anti-D in the 1960s,which prevents women who have rhesus-negative blood from developing the harmful antibodies while pregnant. After Harrison completes one of his routine donations, his blood can be used to create more vaccines (疫苗).
"I started donating in 1955, two days after I turned 18," Harrison said when he completed his 1,075th donation.
As CNN reported, every Anti-D vaccine created in Australia has something to do with a donation from Harrison, who holds the record for most blood donations in Australia.
"A number of mothers have come up to me and said, 'Thank you very much for what you've done, because I now have one, two, three healthy children', " Harrison said.
Harrison's own daughter, Tracey Mellowship, had been one of the 17 percent of women who need Anti-D during their pregnancy. The injection helped guarantee her second son would be born healthy.
"Dad had always donated - we knew that," Mellowship said. "But it didn't hit home until I was pregnant and knew the consequences."
12. From the first two paragraphs, what can we infer about Harrison? ______
A. He is humorous and smart. B. He is friendly but nervous.
C. He is brave and unselfish. D. He is optimistic but weak.
13. What can we learn about the babies affected by rhesus disease? ______
A. They have the same blood type as their mothers.
B. They develop the disease after being born.
C. They can't form Wood themselves.
D. They grow problematic cells.
14. Harrison's blood can ______ .
A. help patients develop Anti-D
B. cure rhesus disease affected babies
C. help avoid the risk of rhesus disease
D. stop babies from producing antibodies
15. Before Mellowship was injected Anti-D, her family didn't ______ .
A. know Harrison held a record for donating blood
B. expect she would have another healthy son
C. realize the high rate of potential rhesus disease
D. understand the meaning of Harrison's act
The Benefits of Keeping a Journal If you want to grow, one important thing you should do is keeping a journal. It may seem simple, but it can make a big difference in your life. I have been keeping journals for years. Writing all the lessons I learn and all the ideas I get has become a habit for me. And to be honest, I can't imagine what my life would be like without it.
(1)
It prevents you from losing an idea. Have you ever gotten an idea only to lose it later because you didn't write it down? (2) But then I developed the habit of writing down every idea that came into my mind as soon as possible. If I'm away from my computer, I usually write it down on a piece of paper that I bring wherever I go. I will then transfer the idea to the journal in my computer.
It helps you review all the lessons you've learned. By reviewing your journal, you can quickly see the lessons you've learned and the ideas you've gotten. (3) You can use the ideas to propel (鞭策)yourself forward.
(4) After keeping a journal for years, you can look back at it and see how far you've gone. Things that were big problems in the past might seem small today. The raw ideas you had in the past might have been realized today.
It helps you expand your ideas. When you try to come up with a sentence to express an idea, you are thinking actively about it (5) In the end, you will expand your ideas.
A. Thinking actively helps you connect your idea to another idea.
B. It trains you to express your thoughts.
C. It allows you to see your progress over time.
D. Here are some benefits you will get by keeping a journal.
E. Just use whatever tool you feel comfortable with.
F. I often experienced that myself.
G. Then you can do whatever necessary to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
