Lots of kids don’t have perfect teeth, so don’t worry if yours aren’t straight. You might just need to see an orthodontist who will tell you if you need braces (牙箍).
Types of braces
Metal (金属的) braces are still used, but you might get braces that are the same color as your teeth instead. There are even braces that go behind your teeth where no one can see them. The wires (金属线) used in braces today are also smaller, and they can straighten your teeth faster and more easily.
__________
Braces straighten teeth by putting pressure on your teeth over a period of time. The wires on your braces help to move your teeth, and the rubber bands (橡皮筋) help to correct the way your teeth line up.
People wear braces for different lengths of time, but for most people it’s usually about two years.
Life with braces
Braces act like magnets (磁体) for food, so you need to keep your teeth clean. You’ll have to stay away from some foods that are problems for braces, such as popcorn and candy. Sugary sodas (苏打水) and juice can cause a problem too, because the sugar stays on your teeth and may cause tooth decay (蛀牙). Be sure to brush your teeth after meals.

My friend Shakuntali Siberia once said: “Things do not give us true happiness.” I used to wonder, “Is this really so ” But after experiencing a worldwide quarantine (隔离), I think it’s true.
We live in a new, strange world. My new dress hangs in my closet (衣橱) – I have nowhere to wear it. My expensive car is parked – I can’t go anywhere. My gym membership (会员) card is on my desk – I haven’t used it in a long time. Siberia was right – things do not make me happy.
Then how can we find happiness I asked Siberia this question. She said it’s easy – you just have to smile and be nice to everyone, even strangers.
I decided to try it. I opened WhatsApp and entered a chat group where my neighbors and I discuss our problems. I wrote, “Dear neighbors, I hope you’re having a great day! Everything will be all right.” I added a smiley emoji (表情符号). Within minutes, my phone received lots of messages from my neighbors. People thanked me and wished me a good day. One neighbor shared a fun song, another sent a cute kitten sticker (猫咪贴图), and another sent me a funny meme (表情包).
I thought to myself, “I’ve made so many people happy with just a few words. If each of us said one nice thing, there could be so much happiness in the world!” This is why I’m launching (发起) the kindwords marathon (马拉松). Let’s each write something nice every day to a friend, neighbor, volunteer ... anyone! We can support each other during these difficult times.

Do you know why different animals or pests(昆虫) have their special colours Colours in them seem to help them protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts(蝗虫), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops(庄稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest (收获)time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the trees.
Have you ever found an even stranger act A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid (液体) when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over (散开), its enemies(敌人) cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.

Oct. 16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It reminds people not to waste food and fight hunger.
A number of people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat. The food shortage(短缺) is a serious problem all over the world. Now, there are more than 1000 million hungry people in the world according to the UN. Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of hunger each year.
There are several reasons for food shortage. First, there are more natural disasters. Also, a growing population(人口) makes feeding everyone more difficult.
Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. The average(平均的) person throws away 50kg of food every year. According to the UN, more than one third of all food goes to waste each year.
Over 1,300 billion kilograms of food is wasted each year. The food wasted in Europe can feed 200 million people, while in Latin America 300 million a year.
So think twice before you throw away food. You’d better order as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can’t eat all, take the rest home. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much. Don’t cook too much.
When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food itself. Resources(资源), such as energy, time and water, are also wasted while growing and cooking. So everyone should know that it is important to save food. Saving food is saving ourselves.
