People say that George Washington, the first president of the United States, never told a lie. But it seems that the president was not without faults.
A New York library recently found that Washington borrowed two books from the library in 1789. He didn’t return them.
If he were still alive, he would have to pay the library $300,000 for being 220 years late.
On October 5, 1789, when the first president borrowed the books form the New York Society Library, he didn’t sign his name in the borrower’s book. He just wrote “president” to show who had taken them out.
The two books should have been brought back a month later but were never returned. Workers at the library realized the books were missing.
The New York Society Library doesn’t expect anyone to pay the fine. But it hopes that someone will return the books.

“Everything happens for the best.” Whenever I faced disappointment, my mother would say this to me.
After I graduated form college in 1932, I decided to find a job in radio as a sports announcer(广播员). I went to Chicago and knocked at the door of every station. But unluckily, I was refused every time.
At one station, a kind lady told me that big stations wouldn’t hire(雇佣) a person without any experience and suggested that I try my luck at smaller stations. As I left his office, I felt so frustrated. “How can I become a sports announcer if I can’t get a job in a radio station?” I asked aloud.
While I was waiting for the elevator, I heard someone calling. It was MacArthur. “What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he asked me to have a try. He was pleased with my performance, and he offered me a chance to work there.
On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words: “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn’t have happened if without the failure before.”

Sleep is like food for the brain. Enough sleep helps the body and brain grow and develop. According to the National Sleep Foundation in the US, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep every night. For students aged 10 to 17, a healthy amount is about eight to nine hours per night.
But many students don’t get enough sleep because of early school start times and heavy homework. It’s great fun to have friends. But sometimes you can be puzzled (困惑的) what gift to give to them. My advice is that it mainly depends on what they like and how much you can pay. All your friends are different in some ways, so you should know each of them very well.
If you think your friend loves something expensive and always wants to be a center of attraction(吸引), then try to give him or her an expensive gift like a cool T-shirt or a beautiful handbag. Or you can also plan a surprise party for them with more friends in a good place. Of course, it doesn’t mean that they will get angry if you give them a simple gift. They prefer to receive gifts which are thoughtful. On the other hand, some friends never expect to get an expensive gift. They will love anything that makes them feel special.
So, a rose, a card or a message may be the best gift for them. It’s just that they would be happier to get the gifts above.
Even you can take them to the beach, talk to them for hours about how lucky you are to have him or her as your friend.
Be sure we give gifts or best wishes to each other to make our friendship stronger. And then we will have every happy moment with each other.

More Electric Machines for Farmers
When Spring Festival is getting closer, more and more people in rural (农村) areas also want to buy things for the new year, such as TV sets, fridges, or washing machines. Our government also set a new policy(政策) to encourage farmers to buy these household goods (家用品). If you are a farmer, you will get some money back from the government when you buy these things in the shop. This is because the government gives a 13 percent subsidy (补贴) to the rural consumption (消费) , that is , you can buy things at a 13% lower price if you buy TV sets, mobile phones, washing machines and fridges.
Mr Wang bought a mobile phone from the shop. And it cost him about 850 yuan. He could enjoy 110.5 yuan subsidy from the government . That means he only spent 739.5 yuan on the mobile phone. Another farmer, Zhou Lin, bought a fridge from the shop. Its price is 1960 yuan. In no more than fifteen days, he got 255 yuan back from the government. He was very happy, too. He said, “ The government helps me buy these machines. I will buy a new washing machine soon.”
Last year, there were three provinces, Shandong, Henan and Sichuan, carried out this policy. It has made great progress. So this year, our government decided to carry out the program all over the country. But at present, you had better choose the ones which are within the program.

Everybody knows that safety comes first. But a survey shows that every year, about 18,500 children under age 14 die in traffic accidents in China. The death rate (率)in China is 2.5 times higher than that in European(欧洲的) countries. And a report said that few cars with child safety seats are sold in China. Safety problem worries the Chinese people.
Luckily, Chinese government(政府) has decided to change. The 12th Five-Year Plan on Road Traffic Safety (2011-2015) says that the country will improve its school bus safety management system(管理系统)over the next four years. All school buses must be equipped (装备)with GPS systems by 2015, and every seat in the buses must be equipped with seat belts(安全带)by 2013. Over the next four years, there will be more policies(政策) to develop school buses. The school bus will be much safer. The parents don’t have to pick up their children in their own cars every day. As we all know, China is developing fast. But it is terrible to read about the accidents in China because people are so careless when they cross the road, and drivers often drive too fast because they want to make more money. When does music in public places become noise pollution?
You may like at least some kind of music. But the problem is that, in lots of places, you’re made to hear somebody else’s choice in music. Say you’ve just landed at an airport. At the airport, the “background” (背景)music may be played loudly.
When you are on the way to your hotel, there may be another kind of music played by the taxi driver. Then you finally reach your hotel. But when you are taking the elevator(电梯),there is elevator music.
You go out to dinner and end up in a place where the owner of the restaurant thinks music will help make you eat more and spend more. Then a person playing the violin comes around. This is called the “music wallpaper”. It is to make you buy more and eat a lot. ?Even the government thinks this is “noise pollution,” especially when the music is too loud.
Noise pollution may be bad for our hearing. It’s also bad for some of our daily activities, such as sleeping, conversations and so on.
The fact that you can’t see, taste or smell it may help explain why it has not received as much attention as other kinds of pollution, such as air pollution or water pollution. The air around us is always filled with sounds, but most of us would not think we are surrounded(包围) by noise. This can be bad for our health. So many people like soft and quiet music in their house.

Singles Day (光棍节)falls on every November 11th, and as the name suggests, this holiday is one specially for people who are still living the single life. It’s surprising that China is the only country in the world that has set up a special day for singles to celebrate(庆祝) their lives. To find out more about this celebration, read on.
An old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. None of them were married, or had lovers, or did anything exciting. They just sat around all day and played Mahjong(麻将).
One day they played Mahjong from 11 in the morning until 11 at night. During the game, no matter who won, the winning card was always the 'Sitiao' card. And that day happened to be November 11th. In order to remember the day, they called it Singles Day.
For breakfast on Singles Day, singles often eat four youtiao, which means the four "ones" in "11.11". Many singles also choose to say goodbye to their single lives on this day. So they take part in 'blind date' parties , trying to find someone they love and many people choose to marry on this day. Besides the meaning 'single', the four 'ones' of the date can also mean 'only one' as in 'the only one for me.' Some people will use this date and this meaning to tell their special someone that they are the only 'one' in their heart.

A company , Guizhentang , has had to face a lot of criticism(批评)because the company is in the bear bile business . They have bear farms in which bile is taken out and used in traditional Chinese medicine and for other purposes .
Bile is a liquid(液体)that is produced in the liver(肝)and stored in the gall bladder(胆囊). In bears ( and in humans too ) , bile is necessary to help digest(消化)fatty foods . Traditional Chinese medicine uses bear bile to cure(治疗)pain , fever and vision(视力)problems . Bile for traditional Chinese medicine used to be collected by killing bears , but it was discovered that bear bile could be got by keeping the bears alive and just “ milking ” them by putting a rubber tube(橡胶管)into the bodies of bears . Unfortunately , this is a painful process and the bears have to live a life of suffering .
Animal rights groups want this practice to stop . They say it is a cruel way to treat animals . Guizhentang disagrees . They say the practice isn’t harmful and that they are actually helping the bears . There are fewer Chinese black bears , from which the bile is taken , because human activity is taking over the forest the bears live in . The company says bear farms are a way to protect the species . On the one hand , we use many types of animals for food , clothing , medicine and for medical research . On the other hand , we should know that causing animals great pain is wrong .
There are man-made substitutes(替代品)for bear bile that work just as well as the real thing , so bear farms aren’t really necessary . If Guizhentang really wants to protect the black bear , they should perhaps think about getting out of the bear bile business .
62. Guizhentang has been criticized because _______________ .
A. it kills a lot of black bears
B. it makes traditional Chinese medicine
C. it is in the bear bile business
D. it has a lot of farms to keep bears
63. What can we learn about bear bile from the passage ?
A. It is produced in the gall bladder .
B. It helps digest foods having a lot of fat .
C. It can’t cure a person’s eye problems .
D. It’s now got mainly by killing bears
64. According to the passage , which of the following is NOT true ?
A. A tube in the bodies of bears often make them die .
B. Animal rights groups are against getting the bile out of bears .
C. Guizhentang thinks bear farms are a way to protect bears .

In Britain you may often hear “Drop in any time” or “Come to see me soon”, but you can’t really do that. People just say those things to make you feel welcome. It is better to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you receive a written invitation to an event that says “RSVP”, you should reply to let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to go.
You should never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying, “Thank you for inviting me, but I will not be able to come.” If, after accepting, you are unable to go, be sure to tell those who are expecting you as soon as possible that you will not be there. Although it is not necessarily expected that you give a gift to your host, it is considered polite to do so, especially if you have been invited for a meal. Flowers, chocolate, or a small gift are all proper. A thank-you note or telephone call after the visit is also considered polite and is a proper way to express your appreciation for the invitation.

At that time, he was not among the best students at school, and he often got into trouble with either his schoolmates or his teachers. But he was full of new ideas, which few people saw the value of. Things remained the same when he went up to college and he dropped out halfway.
After he left college, Steven Jobs worked as a video game designer at Atari. He worked there for only several months and then he went to India. He hoped that the trip would give him some new ideas and a change for a better life.
Steven Jobs lived on a farm in California for a year after he returned from India. And then, in 1975, he began to make a new type of computer. Along with his friend, Steven Woziak, he designed the Apple Computer in his garage. He chose the name “Apple” just because it reminded him of a happy summer he once spent in an orchard (果园) in Oregon.

Do animals have a culture? What do we mean by “culture?” Lately social scientists have begun to ask if culture is found just in humans, or if some animals have a culture too.
When we speak of culture, we mean a way of life a group of people have in common. Culture includes the beliefs and attitudes we learn. It is the patterns of behavior that help people to live together. It is also the patterns of behavior that make one group of people different from another group.
Our culture lets us make up (弥补) for having lost our strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses. Instead we use tools, work with one another, and communicate with others by using languages. But these parts of human behavior, or “culture,” can also be found in the lives of certain animals. Animals can make tools, for example. We used to think that the ability to use tools was the dividing line between human beings and other animals. Lately, however, we have found that this is not the case. Chimpanzees can not only use tools but actually make tools themselves. Animals can also share knowledge with each other and use their own language to communicate. So it may be important for us to know that the line dividing us from animals is not as clear as we used to think.
62.Choose the statement that best expresses the main idea.
