Most people want to be happy ,but few know how to find happiness.Money and success alone do not bring lasting -happiness.Aristotle,a Greek thinker, said,“happiness depends upon ourselves.” In other words,we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend too much time thinking about the future—for example, getting into college or getting a good job—that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favourite music,or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.
Another secret to living a happy life is to be active. Many people go dancing or play sports. People can forget about their problems and only think about the activities.
Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier,do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies,go shopping to buy food for an elderly person,or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.

Many people go to school for education. School education is very important and useful, but no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows, cannot teach his student everything. His work is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So much more is to be learned outside school by students themselves.
It’s always more important to know how to learn by oneself than to learn some facts or formulas (公式)by heart. It’s quite easy to learn some facts in history or a formula in math, but it’s very difficult to use them. Edison and Einstein didn’t get everything from school, but they were all successful. They invented so many things. The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read many books outside school. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. The most important thing is that they know how to use their brains(大脑)。

Biologists in Alaska are counting walruses (海象) in the Arctic
Ocean. The aim: to decide whether the walrus is an endangered species
(物种).
In 1990, biologists counted 201,039 walruses in the Arctic Ocean.
Now, over 20 years later, it seems there are fewer. After three years of counting, the US Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that there are only 15,164 walruses in the area. But, scientists say, "They've not finished counting. "
"We're still working on the final population estimate," said Suzann. She is a wildlife biologist with the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
Endangered Species?
What's a possible reason for the lower walrus count? Brendan Cummings, a spokesperson for
the Center for Biological Diversity (多样性), thinks many walruses are dying. He believes global
warming is melting the ice in the waters between Alaska and Russia. That's the area where most
walruses live. However, they can't live without ice.
But other scientists aren't so sure that the walruses are dying out. The US Fish and Wildlife
Service biologist Doug Bum said, "We realized we were missing a lot of walrus groups. " So the
walrus count goes on. The counting hasn't been easy. Scientists sometimes have to guess the number
of walruses that are underwater.
US law requires scientists to count the walruses every three years. Then, if the mammals (哺乳动物) turn out to be an endangered species, they will be counted every year.
66. What's the purpose of counting walruses in the Arctic Ocean?.
A. To study the living habits of walruses.
B. To show the bad environment of the earth.
C. To see whether the walruses belong to the endangered animals.
D. To see whether the Arctic Ocean is suitable for people to live in.
67. What does the underlined word "estimates" mean in Chinese?
A.创造 B.估算 C.分析 D.制造
68. According to the US law, scientists will count the walruses every year if they are ___.
A. missing B. endangered
C. sold out D. under the water
69. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The counting of the walrus is easy.
B. Brendan Cummings is a biologist of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
C. In 1990, biologists counted only 15,164 walruses in the Arctic Ocean.
D. Brendan Cummings believes global Warming makes the walruses fewer.

Sometimes people come into your life and you know at once that they were sure to be there. They serve some sort of purpose(出于某种目的), teach you a lesson or help find out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be: your classmate, neighbor, teacher, long-lost friend or even a real stranger. But you know that every moment they will affect your life in some serious way.
Sometimes things happen to you. At the time they may seem terrible, painful (痛苦的) and unfair. But later you realize that without getting over those difficulties you would have never realized your further ability and strength. Everything happens for a reason and nothing happens by chance or with good or bad luck.
The people you meet affect your life, and the successes and failure (失败) you experience, create who you are. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones.
Enjoy every day even every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can, for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people you have never talked to before, and really listen. You should set your sights high, hold your head up, tell yourself you are a great one and believe in yourself.

Now satellites are helping to forecast(预报)the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气), because this is where the weather forms(形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(气象学家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.

People want to know when a earthquake is coming, Then they can get away safely. Right now, there is no sure way to know ahead of time. Maybe the best way is to watch the animals.

Happiness is for everyone. You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money.
When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge (挑战)yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving (旋转) door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.

A. those who have large and beautiful houses B. those who have cars
C. those who have a lot of money D. all people

A. When you get success, your friends will be very proud of you.
B. You can get help from others when you make mistakes.
C. You can still be a happy person even if you have little money.
D. All the above.
39. Why do we say “Happiness is not the same as money”? Because______.
A. money always brings happiness B. money doesn’t always bring happiness
C. everything can be bought with money D. only rich people have happiness
40. Which is the title of the passage?______.
A. Happiness B. Happy and Lucky

Reporters from NHK, the country’s largest TV station, stayed calm in front of cameras during the earthquake, even though some were facing real danger.

Do animals have a culture? What do we mean by “culture?” Lately social scientists have begun to ask if culture is found just in humans, or if some animals have culture too. When we speak of culture, we mean a way of life a group of people have in common. Culture includes the beliefs and attitudes we learn. It is the patterns( 样式 ) of behavior that help people to live together. It is also the patterns of behavior that make one group of people different from another group.
Our culture lets us make up for having lost our strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses. Instead we use tools, cooperate with one another, and communicate ( 交流 ) with language. But these aspects of human behavior, or “culture,” can also be found in the lives of certain animals. Animals can make tools, for example. We used to think that the ability to use tools was the dividing line between human beings and other animals. Lately, however, we have found that this is not the case. Chimpanzees( 黑猩猩 ) can not only use tools but actually make tools themselves. Animals can also share knowledge with each other and use their own language to know that the line dividing(区分 ) us from animals is not as clear as we used to think.

For several years, Americans have enjoyed tele-shopping—watching TV and buying things by phone. Now tele-shopping is starting in Europe(欧洲). In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, jewelry, food, toys, and many other things. Tele-shopping is becoming popular in Sweden, for example. The biggest Swedish company sells different kinds of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made $100 million. In France there are two tele-shopping channels, and the French spend about $20 million a year to buy things through those channels. In Germany, until last year tele-shopping was only possible on one channel for 1 hour every day. Then the government allowed (允许) more tele-shopping. Other channels can open for tele-business, including(包括) the largest American tele-shopping company and a 24-hour tele-shopping company. German businesses are hoping this new tele-shopping will help them sell more things. Some people like tele-shopping because it allows them to do their shopping without leaving their homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason. But at the same time, other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. They call tele-shopping “junk (垃圾)on the air”. Many Europeans usually worry about the quality (质量) of the things for sale on TV. Good quality is important to them, and they believe they cannot be sure about the quality of the things on TV. The need for high quality means that European tele-shopping companies will have to be different from the American companies. They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell. They will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers cannot touch or see in person.
