I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike. It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My grandfather was the one who taught me and he helped me when I got hurt. The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what I was doing, and just about everything went wrong. My grandfather told me to just put my feet on the pedals(脚蹬子) and start cycling. He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn't.
As soon as I started trying to balance myself, he let the bike go. I happened to look back just then. I was scared to death that I was going to fall and hurt myself. When I was scared, my mind went blank from cycling, and I just wanted off. I forgot how to use the brakes(车闸) and fell right off the bike. My grandfather kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally stopped crying, got up and tried again.
As soon as I started riding again, my pants got caught in the chain, and I fell flat on my face and hit my nose. My grandfather decided to call it a day and try again the next morning. The next morning I woke up brightly and early, and was very eager to try to ride my bike. My nose felt better, so I wasn't that afraid of falling anymore.
Despite the fact that I knew there were a range of difficulties on the way to mastering the skills in riding a bike, I believed I could do well with my grandfather's help. After all, riding a bike was indeed what I wanted to do eagerly.

A new course on world heritage and its conservation offers a good opportunity for the young people to learn about the heritage of humanity and gain a sense of responsibility to help protect the planet we live on.
According to a world heritage education programme jointly launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) and China’s Ministry of Education, the course will first be offered at several schools in Beijing before being included as a mandatory course(必修课) for high school students nationwide.

Facebook has developed a kind of AI (人工智能) translating between any pair of 100 languages without depending on first translating to English.
Facebook’s system was trained on a data set of 7.5 billion sentence pairs collected from the web across 100 languages, though not all the languages had an equal number of sentence pairs. “What I was really interested in was cutting out English as a middle man. Globally there are plenty of countries where they speak two languages that aren’t English,” says Angela Fan of Facebook AI, who led the work.
For some language pairs, the new system shows prominent improvements in translation quality. For example, translating from Spanish to Portuguese is extremely strong because Spanish is the second-most spoken first language worldwide, meaning the researchers can get a lot of data. Translation between English and Belarusian (白俄罗斯语) also is improved because the AI can translate Russian into English, which shares similarities with Belarusian.
While the system isn’t in use on the social network site, Facebook plans to put it to work soon to manage the 20 billion translations made every day when people click “Translate” on posts (帖子) written in more than 160 languages. “Future work will be done on other languages,” says Fan, “especially for languages where we don’t have a lot of data, like South-East Asian and African languages.”
The work “breaks away from the English-centric models and tries to build more different models,” says Shelia Castilho of the ADAPT Centre at Dublin City University, Ireland, “That’s pretty new and different. But it’s hard to know if the AI does a right translation work,” says Castilho. “The users may not know the other language, so they cannot judge the correctness of the translation.”
22. What’s Angela Fan’s purpose of doing the research
A. To collect data of all kinds of people.
B. To make learning different languages easier.
C. To achieve her dream of becoming a translator.
D. To avoid using English as a middle man in translation.
23. Why is it easy to translate from Spanish to Portuguese by AI
A. There is much data on Spanish.
B. Portuguese is similar to Spanish.
C. Researchers have a good knowledge of the two languages.
D. Spanish is spoken by the largest number of people.
24. What is Castilho worried about
A. The safety of AI translation. B. The correctness of AI translation.
C. The way of using Facebook. D. The number of posts on the website.
25. What is the best title for the text
A. Facebook AI Can Talk with the Users
B. Facebook Wants to Buy a New System
C. Facebook AI Can Translate Any Pair of 100 Languages
D. Facebook Has Lost Many Users
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to learn a language in superfast time
Being able to use a new tongue is an invaluable skill. It can increase your mental health, working ability and general intelligence. 26
Listen to foreign news reports.
A great way to speed up your learning process is to follow the news in a foreign language. 27 Once you know the story, you can try to read it or listen to it or watch video reports in the target language you are trying to learn.
Make good use of the possibilities of technology.
28 Instead of signing up for a one-hour class and commuting (经常往返) there every day, you can now learn whenever you want.
Technology has also speeded up the learning time of a language. “Because we have so many users, we can find out the most convenient and effective ways to learn a new language in a matter of days, ” says Luis von Ahn, the founder of the popular languge-learning platform Duolingo.
29
By changing your environment, and actually studying in a country or region where the target language is spoken, you will encounter the words and phrases in very natural situations, which will be very helpful.
Adapt to your overall lifestyle.
Make studying your target language part of your daily life. You can put Post-It notes around your house with new vocabulary on them. 30 Then refer to it often throughout the day. While you’re waiting for the bus or for a friend to arrive, you can be studying. It’s amazing how well this method works.
A. Sign up for a language class.
B. It takes efforts to remember these words.
C. Mix with native speakers as often as possible.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Joel stared at the ground. Rather, he stared at what was lying on the ground: a robotic glove(手套). It was made of metal, with black and yellow paint. Joel looked around his backyard. How did a robotic glove end up next to his dad’s vegetable garden
In any case, Joel had found it. And no one else was around.
That meant only one thing: finders keepers. Wasn’t that how finders keepers worked If you found something and couldn’t find the owner, it was yours.
The robotic glove was now Joel’s. Picking up the glove, Joel realized it wasn’t as heavy as he expected it would be. Even though it was much bigger than his own hand, he decided to try it on.
He slipped his hand inside and felt the machine come to life. It beeped(发哔哔声)three times. Joel moved his fingers, and the robot fingers moved too. Joel walked over to a large tree branch that had fallen in his yard and wrapped the robotic fingers around it. He lifted the branch. It should have been heavy, but with the glove it was no heavier than a small branch.
He couldn’t believe it. Maybe it was a kind of antigravity(抵抗重力) machine reported in the newspaper. Now, what was he going to do with it
Joel’s mom was inside rearranging the furniture. He could walk in and say “Do you need a hand with that ” before easily picking up the couch(沙发)and setting it somewhere else.
At the library, he could say “Let me help” and carry in a tall stack of boxes filled with books. At the park, he could say “How about we eat lunch over there ” and carry the picnic table to a shady spot.
Everything would feel as light as a pencil. He’d feel like a superhero. But first, he wanted to show his dad what he’d found. He started running toward the front yard.
That’s when he heard someone call, “Has anyone seen my robotic glove ” Joel stopped. Near the garage, his dad was talking to their new next-door neighbor, Mr. Shore.
“I haven’t seen a robotic glove,” Joel’s dad said.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.续写为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Joel’s eyes widened when he realized the glove belonged to Mr. Shore.

Just then, Joel’s mom called out, “Help me move the couch!”

However, seeing the disappointment on Mr. Shore’s face, he took a deep breath and called out, “I found it!” Mr. Shore’s face lit up with relief. Joel ran over, took off the glove, and gave it to his neighbor. “I found it in the backyard,” Joel said. “I tried it on and I could lift a huge branch. It’s amazing.” (81 words)
Just then, Joel’s mom called out, “Help me move the couch!” He hesitated because without the glove, his dreams of being a superhero faded away. He felt so upset. Everyone looked at each other—and then everyone looked at the glove. Joel felt like a superhero again! (77 words)
