Lise Meitner was born in Vienna, Austria on November 7, 1878.She was the third child of eight children in the family. Her father Philipp, who was a lawyer, hired personal teachers to teach the children, and she learned mathematics very well. Music was important to the family, and all the children learned to play the piano. The Meitner children were taught to listen to their parents, but to think for themselves.
When Lise Meitner finished school at the age of 14, she could not go to college for higher education, as were all girls in Austria. But, inspired by the discovery of Henri Becquerel, she was determined to study radioactivity(放射性).
When she turned 21, women were finally allowed into Austrian universities. Meitner was admitted into the University of Vienna; there she was excellent at math and physics and earned her doctor’s degree in 1906.She wrote to Marie Curie, but there was no room for her in the Paris lab, so Meitner made her way to Berlin. There she worked with Otto Hahn, but as an Austrian Jewish woman, she was excluded from the main labs and allowed to work only in the basement.
In 1912, the pair moved to a new university and Meitner had better lab equipment. Though Meitner was forced to escape Nazi Germany in 1938, they continued to co work. Meitner continued her work in Sweden and later they found the phenomenon “nuclear fission(核裂变)”. The discovery, which finally led to the atomic bomb, won Hahn the Nobel Prize in 1944. Meitner, ignored by the Nobel committee(委员会), refused to return to Germany after the war and continued her atomic research in Stockholm into her80s.

Susan Murabana’s travelling telescope began with a simple revelation(被暴露的真相):We all have access to the sky. We all see the same moon. At the same time, she knew that access wasn't created equal. Telescopes have been around for 400 years, but most children in Kenya had never looked through one. She thought she could change that.
In 2014, she and her partner Mr. Owen bought a telescope and started showing kids around Kenya what the stars looked like up close. Today, their Travelling Telescope program has reached 200,000 kids. It teaches kids about space and rockets online, offering workshops on 3D modeling and astronomy to local schoolchildren. “It's never been about these kids becoming astronomers,” Mrs. Murabana says. “I believe astronomy is an opportunity for kids to spread interest in other fields of science such as engineering and math, and that it is only through science that we can understand the world we live in.”
Growing up in Nairobi, Mrs.Murabana never saw astronomy as a possible career path-or even a potential hobby. “I always loved math and science, but I wasn't exposed to astronomy,” she says. She studied economics in college, and then worked in marketing. But when she volunteered in science outreach programs where she met Owen, she saw the way astronomy seemed to make kids from all walks of life light up. Soon, she began teaching kids about space through programs like Hands-On Universe, and completing a master' s degree in astronomy herself.
At Hillcrest International Schools in Nairobi, preparatory head teacher Surbhi Vashisht says the telescope has hit it big among her students, 170 of whom have participated in Travelling Telescope workshops: looking at the stars, building rockets, and virtually exploring the landscape of Mars. “The children enjoy a lot in the sessions,” she writes in an email.
28. What's the purpose of Mrs. Murabana's Travelling Telescope program
A. To promote the development of astronomy in her country.
B. To make telescopes affordable to most schools in Kenya.
C. To inspire kids to be astronomers in the future.
D. To open the door to science for kids.
29. What contributes to Mrs. Murabana's change of career path
A. Her experience as a volunteer.
B. The unsatisfying education in Africa.
C. The love and support from Mr. Owen.
D. Her completing a master's degree in astronomy.
30. Which of the following can best replace the underlined part “hit it big” in the last paragraph
A. Gained favor. B. Become mysterious.
C. Caused a big concern. D. Been of limited value.
31 What's the text mainly about
A. An effort to create astronomy enthusiasts.
B. A plan to improve the study of astronomy.
C. A way to bring about equality in education.
D. An educational program bringing stars to children. D
Four years ago, more than 700 computer scientists competed in a contest to build an artificial intelligence (Al) that could pass an 8th-grade science exam. They all flunked. Even the most developed system couldn't score higher than 60 points on the test. Al can't match the language and logic (逻辑)skills that students are expected to have when they enter middle school.
Later, a system named Aristo was developed by the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, a lab in the US. It recently passed an 8-grade science exam taken by many US students, the New York Times reported. It correctly answered more than 90% of the questions. Then it was given a 12th-grade exam and it scored more than 80 points.
Aristo was able to pass the exam because it can not only understand language but also use logical thinking to solve difficult problems. For example, it can understand what a forest fire is and how it could affect animals like rabbits. The Aristo system used Bert, a kind of technology developed by Google, to answer the questions. Bert has "tread" thousands of Wikipedia articles and books. If it looks at a sentence with a missing word, it can correctly guess what the word is. With the help of Bert, Aristo has "read" a lot of science questions and answers. Over time, it was able to find logical patterns (模式)on its own.
Aristo's success means that Al systems are getting better at understanding language and even respond to language. However, t4We can't compare this technology to real human students and their logical ability, said Jingjing Liu, a Microsoft researcher, who has been working on similar technologies.
32. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “flunked" in the first paragraph
A. failed B. passed C. missed D. improved
33. Why was Aristo developed
A. To help students do well in exams. B. To improve the logical skills of Al.
C. To help make school tests more scientific. D. To show ATS ability to solve science problems.
34. What is the purpose of the third paragraph
A. To show what else Aristo can do.
B. To tell what Aristo can learn on its own.
C. To explain how Aristo learns to solve problems.
D. To introduce another achievement in technology.
35. What do Jingjing Liu's words show
A. Al is not as developed as it might seem.
B. Humans can't live without Al in the future.
C. Al will soon replace humans in many tasks.
D. Aristo's logical ability still needs improving

It was a Friday afternoon in November. After school, while all other students left the classroom and headed towards home, Mike stayed to go over what he had learned that day. About twenty minutes later, he took out his schoolbag, and decided to return home.
He looked out of the window and found it was going to rain soon. The wind was blowing violently, and the dark clouds were gathering. Luckily, Mike brought an umbrella to school that morning. Carrying his schoolbag and the umbrella, Mike walked out of the classroom in a hurry. His home was more than three kilometers away. Being afraid of the heavy rain, Mike quickened his steps. After Mike had just walked for dozens of meters, it began to thunder and rain lightly. Mike put up his umbrella to prevent himself from getting wet. He didn't want to get sick because of the cold rain. All of the passers-by alongside the road quickened their steps, and the air was filled with people's anxiety. When Mike walked for about eight minutes, he saw a black car that was not far away slowly pulling up beside the road. A middle-aged driver stepped out of the car and appeared anxious. He checked one of the car's tyres (轮胎),finding his car couldn't move on unless the tyre was repaired. He then brought out some tools from the back of his car and bent down to fix the tyre. It began to rain heavily. But the man didn't return to his car. Instead, he continued to fix his car. He was alone, without an umbrella over his head. The drops of the rain coldly hit the trees' leaves, the ground, and also the man. The raindrops soon left big marks on his gray coat. Seeing that, Mike somehow felt quite sorry for the man. He couldn't help thinking, “If my father is trapped in such a situation, how upset he'l1 be! And how strongly he may wish that some kind person could help him!”
Paragraph 1: Thinking of that, Mike ran to the man, without hesitation.

Youth and Me
To begin with, I’d like to offer my warmest congratulations on the 10th anniversary of Youth! I’ve been a big fan of Youth since the day my teacher recommended it to me. Shy and negative, I was unconfident to join any activity during that time and it was Youth that encouraged me to go through the hard time. Even now reading my favorite column—the Success Stories of Youth, still gives me a strong power to strengthen my heart.
Hopefully Youth will record more stories of positive energy and inspire more students in the next 10 years!
Paragraph 1:
Thinking of that, Mike ran to the man, without hesitation. When he approached the man, he moved his umbrella towards him. The man looked up and felt confused. But he soon realized what was happening. He thanked Mike for his kindness and explained what was wrong with his car. During the period, the rain didn't stop. Mike's umbrella was actually not big enough to fully cover both of them. Thus, Mike tried to move his umbrella to the man's side.
Paragraph 2:
Before long, Mike's shoulder got wet due to the ran. Although it made him very uncomfortable, he ignored it. About 10 minutes later, the man finally finished repairing the tyre. When he stood up, he was surprised to find a large part of Mike's coat was wet while his was relatively dry. The man was extremely touched. He then asked to send Mike home and showed his gratitude to both Mike and his parents. Mike felt cold because of his wet coat, but in his heart, he felt warm and was happy about what he had done.
